  • Galactic Civilizations IV: Supernova has finally had the upgrade I've been waiting for: a drastically improved combat system that gives the player a lot more agency when it comes to ship and fleet composition, and a better combat UI to see it all play out too.
In this series, I play a large map as the Baratak Grove. We're trying to find a solution to pollution while fending off some of the worst neighbours a plant based race could possibly have in GalCiv.

This playthrough is very interesting. 🙂I hope you plan on continuing it. I am interested to see how the new capturing of ships & starbases works in v2.5 Warlords. If you have capital ships with the Assault Shuttles module, do they first have to take down the enemy ship / starbases defenses's before boarding?

27:00 For your Destroyer class I would instead assign doctrine Assault for the -50% cooldown of all weapons against all ship types for a total of -60%. Doctrine Hunter only provides bonuses against Frigates and Corvettes plus your beam weapons already have good accuracy and attack strength. Your Frigate Killer ship design has three shield generators but no missile defense; you might want to replace one of the shield generators with a point defense to provide more balanced defense.

The combat system works differently to GalCiv3, it's not a rock-paper-scissors thing anymore, where you need to cover all three weapon types. Instead the shields, armour and evasion all work to mitigate damage regardless of its source. I'll talk about this when we get some substantial fleet actions.

@@battlemode So then you would not use Chaff, ECM, Point Defense, etc. to defend against Missiles. That explains why there are only two branches under Defenses for Shields and Armor.

25:30 Given the penalties, 10% pollution isn't that low. And I think more housing would be a good idea.
Well it's nice that your defensive war against the aggressive Contaminate that just declared war against you out of nowhere and destroyed your helpless colony ships and took over your colonies is starting to draw to a close. :P
It's very interesting to see you in games that have a bigger diplomacy system. I am usually pretty peaceful in those, so the difference in your an my playstyle is pretty stark.
I think I never really noticed before because peace is not really an option in either CoE or Dominions.

I love playing diplo-based games, it's the main reason I play Dominions in MP, but I tend to play aggressively in both SP and MP games.

Actually he started the defensive war against the Cosmic Contaminates because they were spreading their pollution to his nearby worlds that he wanted to colonize. He was the one destroying their defenseless colony ships because he did not want more polluted worlds inside his territory.

I know. I was being sarcastic.
How dare those other races be faster than Battlemode in colonizing the planets that he wanted to colonize. That's definitely an aggressive act worthy of total war! /sarcasm

18:00 You traded with the Navigators for Interstellar Cabinet. That made available to you very powerful combat ships that you can pickup by assigning ship commanders. One of those ships is a huge hull dreadnought carrier with fighters that respawn! That will give you a huge boost to your military which is currently ranked at only 14th! When you're in the expanding fase with the Baratak first colonize all the planets you can get. After that you use your spores.
You can try to play a bit slower (not as slow as Das ;) ) to make less mistakes. Think the Baratak are about feeders and astroids.
Really like your PT's. So stop making them so I have time to play myself.
Almost forgot but the lower expections only apply to citizens with the collectivism trait.

A good spot on that last point, thank you! I read that and instantly forgot it, as occasionally happens to me
