  • Spike Milligan Grave he was a member of The Good Show.
Spike Milligan KBE comedian, writer, musician, poet, playwright and actor.
Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe, and Michael Bentine joined forces in a relatively radical comedy project, The Goon Show. During its first season the BBC titled the show as Crazy People, or in full, The Junior Crazy Gang featuring those Crazy People, the Goons, an attempt to make the program palatable to BBC officials, by connecting it with the popular group of theatre comedians known as The Crazy Gang.

The story about the Gaelic inscription is that Spike wanted to have, "I told you I was ill" engraved on his headstone. The church authorities refused, so he had it written in Gaelic instead. That is so typical of Spike!

Thanks for this but I have remarked before how sad it is to see so many famous people's graves, apparently, not visited or maintained by their family. I see Spike had 4 kids, for example. All these children of the famous can't all live far away.
My Mum died in 1996 and her gravestone and surrounding area look better now than ever.

I agree but you never know what the relationship was within the family, what is normal for some may not be for others

    • @Isleofskye
      @Isleofskye 7 місяців тому

@@Emjay_____71 Yes, of course, but this is becoming a regular theme in that, after, say 3 or more years, there is little activity around the grave, which is sad, I think.
It's,almost, like "out of sight, out of mind".

Thank you for this most informative and delightful video. Spike has had quite the influence on me ever since as a youngster I listened to the Goon show on the BBC. The wonderful mind pictures the zany antics of the goons created in my young mind are still with me and reinforced with occasional replaying of them, the family tradition of playing "The international Christmas pudding" (yes I did subject my children to the Goon show. I believe it should be mandatory for all first year postsecondary education) on a serious note Spikes candid writing about his mental health issues did help me see the approaching symptoms of serious depression in my partner of some fifty nine years now, which we navigated with help. To this day we still make each other laugh and when I'm out and about I will try to make a stranger laugh. Which I think Spike would agree with. I've rambled on to much to quote a famous person " Don't take life too seriously you'll never get out alive" .

Well that's a wonderful story Paul. I'm so pleased that you got so much pleasure from spikes books and from his humour. He looked at life in such detail. He could see the ridiculousness of certain aspects and that's what made this humour so funny! That is quite an often trade of a comedian there often very intelligent. I wish you all the best with your challenge with your partner. I hope you both get as much pleasure as possible from life. Thank you for your wonderful comment Alan

Thanks for that! I know part of the Gaelic reads 'I told you I was ill', but I see there are two parts in Gaelic, so I assume the shorter one is a message from Shelagh? Btw her name is pronounced Sheila, it is the Irish spelling of Sheila. GH is silent in Gaelic, I know that much. ;)

I lost a dear dear friend who also was manic depressive, apparently it's genetic. His identical twin sister took my friends son back with her to South Africa to break circle. Both my friends father and grandfather on the paternal side did the same at the same age 40. I had to attend the inquest and give testimony as I was the last person to see him alive. He also had several "life" partners, in relatively quick succession, something I find very very odd, as I lost my wife far too early in life but could never and will never love another as I loved her. It makes me feel that people marry but their love is not deeply real, as they get over a loss so quickly. Another lovely respectful video Alan, keep up the good work, not only entertaining but I learn something every time about famous people life and times, respect and compassion.

I've just seen your "Spike Milligan" pop up on screen.. Thank you so much! I'm a bit too young and missed out on his legendary radio shows with Michael Bentine etc. But, as a passionate historian of the car world, I became aware through his writing of his skill as a "wheelman". In those glorious days - the 60's - before political correctness, or speed cameras, he would drive his tuned Mini (Downton or Radford I belive) absolutely flat out everywhere! His driving ability was even comented on by racing drivers.. and I'm sure he put "the fear of God" into more than one passenger!! Can't wait for your "chat" to start as always teach us all.. Thank you!

Another one near me, I can go and visit him when I next go there in the summer.
He was in The Life of Brian because he happened to be in the area, this is taken from Wiki....
""Spike Milligan plays a prophet, ignored because his acolytes are chasing after Brian. By coincidence Milligan was visiting his old World War II battlefields in Tunisia where the film was being made. The Pythons were alerted to this and he was included in the scene being filmed that morning. He left in the afternoon before he could be included in any of the close-up or publicity shots for the film.""

I'm shaking in my boots here (I'm terrified) because I'm going to be so politically incorrect. One of Spike's funniest sketches was the 'Pakistani Dalek' which was hilarious in my opinion.
Whenever Pakistanis, Indians and all other walks of life refer to themselves as British just because they were born here in the UK, I always reply by saying say that 'Spike Milligan and Cliff Richard were born and raised in India but do you believe that they are considered Indian'?
