  • Although the minivan’s star is waning in both attention and sales, the fact remains that pound for pound and inch for inch, the minivan is the most practical of family vehicles. We wanted to take a day to recognize minivans' capability and to pit the best of the breed against each other and see who comes out on top.
Having spent time in all of the remaining minivans, we both felt that the Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Pacifica were standouts, with relatively fresh platforms, the most advanced safety and convenience features and looks that many find attractive. Both the Odyssey and Pacifica we are testing are Touring trims, but they occupy very different spots in their respective model lineups. Touring is the very top trim in the Odyssey lineup, with all the available features bundled into its $52,390 MSRP plus $1,815 freight & PDI. The Pacifica Touring is just a couple steps up from the base L, starting at $43,495 on our price sticker, with over $3,000 in options plus $1,895 in freight & PDI (though it should be noted that the Pacifica Touring is currently discounted to $37,795 on Chrysler.ca at the time of writing, so consider FCA's discounting and incentives when cross-shopping these vans).
While there is some disparity in feature content in these two different trims, both models tested represent the evolution of the minivan in 2020: front-wheel drive, V6 power, dual power sliding doors, stowable third row, and massive cargo capacity on top of seating for seven or eight.

The beauty of being a person who could care less what others think, or what is or is not in style, is that I can buy and drive a minivan and completely enjoy it. Currently, I do not own one, but I have had one, and it was fantastic. The room inside and the ride are superb. In the future, when I can do without a tow vehicle, I will be looking at a minivan.

Comparing apple with Orange.... i just picked a 2020 odyssey which is the 3rd Minivan in my Family. Started with 1996 Mercury Villager ( cheaper version of Nissan Quest ), 07 Nissan Quest which I drove for 12 years now the 2020 Odyssey. You can't compare American with Japanese. They are totally different. Honda doesnt give his vehicle to fleet while chrysler and Dodge are more fleet car. As soon I look at chrysler and Dodge first thing in my mind is Rogers / Bell technician Vehicle and that right there is a turn off. A minivan is not for look it is more for convenience. So saying my point I want you to take a 2016 odyssey and compare it with 2016 pacifica... compare cost of repair, durability, market price. This will make more sense instead of comparing 2 brand new.

The stow away 2nd row is a huge win that no Japanese made van offers and great for turning the minivan into mini RV. Oddysseys 2nd row setup is ridiculous and Toyotas second row con the new 2021 can't even be removed.

If one wants the best economy, if the 2020 Odyssey is like the 2014 Odyssey with the VCM Eco mode, the Odyssey can get 35 miles per gallon, which is over 65 kilometers per U.S. gallon. That is driving 65 miles per hour, or 104 kilometers an hour.

So jealous of your job! I didn't get to drive honda odesey and just picked pacifica that was available at the time I need. I trade in my Honda accord and now have a 2018 pacifica mini van, i did not have the stow and go at second row, but I have a hybrid. So you can imagine every space you can think available is for battery. I see some other pacifica even have a Vacuum, I was shocked. As a mom, having stow a way, hybrid, and vacuum all in one would be such a great... Dream 🤣 maybe one day all will happen.
Oh did you notice in Pacifica the display is tilted to driver side? My car has the DVD entertainment for second rows but I cannot have regular music CDs in the car.

Just so you know they share same ZF 9-speed transmission lol (and just recently Honda started offering their own 10 speed as default transmission). Besides Pentastar engine in Pacifica is more reliable than that infamous Honda one - look up cylinder deactivation issues and gasket oil leaks in Honda Odyssey. In sum: you wanted to put "Japanese" powertrain in Pacifica that is clearly better otherwise with its unbeatable stow-n-go - to make a perfect blend of a minivan. I get it. However, not knowing so you chose a worst engine - Honda one - to go with lol. If you really want to make a best blend minivan - then you need to take Pacifica, leave its Pentastar as probably most reliable engine among minivans and put inside a Toyota Aisin transmission instead of ZF 9 speed one. Now that would be a best of best minivan.

Do yourself a favor and buy the Honda. We traded our 2018 Pacifica in today for the Honda after the Pacifica started to get rust bubbles on the hood in several places and the transmission is absolute garbage. These issues are very common issues too, it wasn’t just bad luck on our behalf.

I live in the Uk and was so disappointed when the Town and Country (grand Voyager )ceased to be marketed here. I have owned these since the 90’s and whenever I visited the US always took these as my rental car and latterly the Pacifica which I love to drive. Sadly the Pacifica too is not being marketed here since no right hand drive is available. They are available in mainland Europe but of course that’s left hand drive and with no dealerships here guess it would not be practical to own one so I have to keep my 2012 Grand Voyager Limited going although living near London the emissions charge.(London has a charge as well as the congestion charge for these vehicles known as ULEZ -Ultra low emissions zone-) This will make driving within the M25 on a daily basis prohibitive from next September . Whether the Pacifica would be exempt from this charge I don’t know. My Voyager with its 2.8 litre diesel unit certainly isn’t. Thank you for your articles- very interesting. ASH Uk

I love vans for what they are and what they offer. The problem isn't the vans themselves, whether they're not stylish or infashion, the problem is very few people have a need for one. The average size of a family in Canada is 2.5. Canada's fertility rate is 1.66 children per women. Think about that for 1 minute...2 adults and half a child is the average size of a Canadian family. Unfortunately, 99% of the population have no need for a minivan. And most of the population doesn't actually need an SUV either.

Typically Honda ranks pretty well for reliability (they are midpack) and Chrysler very poorly (often one of the worst brands), but these two models are not that far apart in either JD Power dependability surveys or Consumer Reports ratings for predicted reliability, so it's not as big a differentiator as you might think. However, the surveys are never a guarantee when it comes down to the individual vehicle you buy, and a lot will depend on your maintenance and care for your vehicle, and if you're buying used you have to pay extra attention to maintenance history and condition.
