I went to college with Ben Folds in 1986. He stayed one year and wrote the music column in the student paper. No one paid any attention to him at the time.
Now he's big and important One angry dwarf And 200 solemn faces Are you If you want to see him Check your papers and your T.V. Look who's tellin' who what to do Kiss his ass good-bye
Ben has spectacular variety. Pounding stuff that rocks. Ballads. Anthems. Quirky unclassifiable stuff. Storytelling. Love songs. Wiseass songs. Angry breakup songs. What a songwriter, what a musician!!
rftulie there's a newer band called the Mountain Goats that remind me a lot of the kind of diversity and POV you mention here from BF5. May be worth checking out if you're not already familiar.
And a great pianist. What he can do on piano....he's a monster. I majored in piano performance and got a degree in it so I can say about this: even if he didn't major in piano performance in college, I am in awe of his skills. I'm most in awe of how percussive he can make his fingers on the piano.
He was always sort of too irreverent to be a pop star. And his emotional tunes weren't mainstream enough. Perfect that way anyways! Love that he never got TOO popular.
I'm in agreement with the comment that says it's his irreverence. Although that never stopped Prince from becoming commercial and in his earlier career he was way more filthy than Ben. So who knows? 🤷🏼♀️
I fell asleep driving on the way home from my girlfriend’s house listening to this garbage. Wrecked my truck into a tree,Mother’s Day 1998,no joke. I don’t think I’ve heard it since, until today. It’s still crappy enough to fall asleep to.
I had this on in the car one day with my 4 year old daughter (I know...) and she listened very carefully to the chorus, and said "I think the witch should give him his money back".
I was at karaoke last night. Got up in front of everyone and said "This song goes out to a very special girl. She's not here tonight, but I'd like to think wherever she is, she knows I'm singing her this song..." This is the song I sang.
Saw him live at the house of blues. He saw a guy in the crowd with a Beatles t-shirt and got half the crowd to song get back and the other half to sing song for the dumped. It was crazy.
Also highly recommended 'Woman's Blues' (1968) by the Bronx genius Laura Nyro. The eroticism of the first few slow lines will make you blush, then its goes into a sensational groove with brilliant lyrics. Nyro was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 2012. She is the best and most influential female singer/songwriter of the last 50 years years. The Guardian online featured an article about Nyro April 2017. Also see youtube Nyro raves by Elton John, Todd Rundgren, Alice Cooper. Joni Mitchell described Nyro as 'holy wine in the bloodstream'.
I new about this song for almost 2 decades now and there's a whole new meaning after having my first breakup. Also I didn't know that Ben sang a part of this in Japanese.
this song is the epitome of what it feels like the instant you know that your soul has been smashed b y someone for whom you would of given the world to, and as you get more angry and time goes by you realize how petty it really is and you lash out at anything that reminds you of love becouse love is the only emotion strong enough to write a song like this
Personally, I love this song because you see the title, think, Hey, this is going to be the perfect song to listen to while I'm moping around, and then turn it on and hear the most hilariously wonderful thing ever.
I bought Whatever and Ever Amen in '97, when a friend turned me onto it, and my whole friend group and I at the time, played it out (for at least a year straight). Then in 2006 I had an argument with a toxic boyfriend who strung me along for far too long, and I knew he was gonna dump me that day (i wouldn't park in a handicap space when I drove him to deposit a check at the bank, and he had to walk - no exaggeration - 6 parking spaces from the door to my car - he didn't have a car ...and he's not handicapped - ). When I got back to his place, before I left I said "I need to get something.", and ran inside. I remembered this song, and I'd be GOD DAMNED if I was gonna leave my black T-shirt behind!!! (This is a true story) :$
My male roommate in the late 90's played this in repeat. I appreciated the music, at the time. A few years later, my husband dumped me, and I was totally singing this song. 😂
I have loved this song for so many years now and I’m just now seeing the video and didn’t know the second verse was in Japanese or whatever. Still a great song though.
Just had a breakup after dating for 3 years, I chose to pursue a PhD and she said the distance is too much for her to handle since she doesn't want to move from the island once she's done studying. She asked for time and went silent for a month before telling me that distance was too much. Man what a great song right now :^)
I seen these guys front row and Ben was ARROGANT! The other guys were cool. Train opened up for them and that singer was chill and cool. Still love the music but damn, let some air out your head
I had a girlfriend for about two months and then she dumped me for someone else. Then it turned out that person was just an excuse to dump me, and by the time I found THAT out she was with my best friend, although that didn't last long either. I never loved her, although she was the best looking girl in the school. I just kinda shrugged it off and sang a little bit of this song to him and he smiled.
2022: Girlfriend (and her new lover) cleaned my apartment out and abducted my dog. Called the cops. "Sorry, we can't do anything." Listening to this song as I sit in my empty apartment.

Lucky bastard

christschool liar.
Matt Davis how would you know?
Even though this is probably just one of those things white people without friends say on twitter im curious, do you have any proof?
Ben has spectacular variety. Pounding stuff that rocks. Ballads. Anthems. Quirky unclassifiable stuff. Storytelling. Love songs. Wiseass songs. Angry breakup songs. What a songwriter, what a musician!!

Not the cookie cutter crap
Was a great band
Oh, you summed that up SO perfectly!
And a great pianist. What he can do on piano....he's a monster. I majored in piano performance and got a degree in it so I can say about this: even if he didn't major in piano performance in college, I am in awe of his skills. I'm most in awe of how percussive he can make his fingers on the piano.
Why hasn't he been more famous? A real talent, intelligent, a true musician. Genuine quality rarely appeals to the masses, unfortunately.
He was always sort of too irreverent to be a pop star. And his emotional tunes weren't mainstream enough. Perfect that way anyways! Love that he never got TOO popular.
It happens to nerd rock
I'm in agreement with the comment that says it's his irreverence.
Although that never stopped Prince from becoming commercial and in his earlier career he was way more filthy than Ben. So who knows? 🤷🏼♀️
I would say the radically punk music style and the vicious profanity in every song probably held him back, also made him awesome so go figure.
I mean, Ben Folds is pretty famous. Like, he was a household name in the 1990's...
This song never gets old.
I fell asleep driving on the way home from my girlfriend’s house listening to this garbage. Wrecked my truck into a tree,Mother’s Day 1998,no joke. I don’t think I’ve heard it since, until today. It’s still crappy enough to fall asleep to.
This real f’ing music.Ben jamming to this since the 1990’s
LOVE the japanese portion, it totally threw me for a loop and I LOVED it!
I had this on in the car one day with my 4 year old daughter (I know...) and she listened very carefully to the chorus, and said "I think the witch should give him his money back".
That's hilarious.
you know your kid did not say that💀
And everyone's clapped. You don't even have kids, stop lying on the internet, if you lie here you lie in actual life.
So when did she figure out it was bitch?
@@wapo5236I believe it. Four year Olds say some funny shit.
Some songs never get old.
I love the banter between them, Robert pushing against Ben when he says "Have some space", then Ben unplugging Robert's bass XD
i've been (very slowly) learning this song on piano and holy crap is it difficult. Ben Folds is one talented musician.
So have you learned the entire song?
@@Vitorio582 I have! I can't do parts of the solo at full speed but I've pretty much got it down. Such a hard song!
You would try one angry dwarf I can’t even play the first measure
@@YaronGuez You are a legend for responding ~10 years later
@@ezrac704 lol well the question was 10 years later as well
Man I listened to this album over and over when it came out. It was a musician’s album.
I just remembered this song and tried to find it... glad I did. I swear it was on the radio twice back in the day. Wonderful composition!🤟
I feel like Ben Folds Five was my therapy growing up. All the shit I was going through, they sung about it.
For the record, I turned out alright.
_You lost your left arm??_
I was at karaoke last night. Got up in front of everyone and said "This song goes out to a very special girl. She's not here tonight, but I'd like to think wherever she is, she knows I'm singing her this song..."
This is the song I sang.
I love the piano sound in this one.
They are all so good at their instruments its crazy!
Every man that walks this planet can relate to this song!!!
Punk rock piano!
I think this song is actually saving my life real time
My father presented me to Ben Folds 20 years ago. I thank him every day.
I LOVE THIS SONG it is for anyone who has had their heart broken and can relate!!!
And never got their black t shirt back.
I believe music is the greatest of all art forms.
CANNOT get enough of this song....great tune plus it's SO much truth!
Saw him live at the house of blues. He saw a guy in the crowd with a Beatles t-shirt and got half the crowd to song get back and the other half to sing song for the dumped. It was crazy.
My favorite breakup song ever. Love the pettiness!
I remember getting dumped in college and this song got me throught it all. Thanks Ben Folds Five.

This song is just perfect.

Ben is a musical genius, in my opinion!! ❤
My male roommate in the late 90's played this in repeat. I appreciated the music, at the time. A few years later, my husband dumped me, and I was totally singing this song. 😂
Honesty.
I learned this by ear and performed it when they were still unknown.
Still great, and all my exes deserve these words.
That's awesome man, i don't think people realize how much effect music has on the human brain.
Somehow, I’ve randomly sung this to myself for most of my life but only thought to play it now. Don’t know how I know it.
All those guys are just amazing musicians. Such a great record.
Where are the other two members? LOL
OMG THIS SONG IS MAGICALLY GREAT

This is a great visualization of the instrumentals!
Hadn't heard this song since '97, and didn't remember anything about it except "gimme my money back you bitch".
Typed that into Google, and here I am!
Aaron Costello I just saw my old Facebook status was "I want my money back you bitch" and came here to look up why I said that LOL

These songs take me so far back...happy they are releasing a new album in September!
Loved discovering Ben Folds Five through Alfa Rock "Ciento Seis" in PR. Recorded this song on a casette, F-Bomb and all.
Love this track
I have loved this song for so many years now and I’m just now seeing the video and didn’t know the second verse was in Japanese or whatever. Still a great song though.
