I blasted this song on repeat on the way to my high school graduation. My friends and I were screaming the lyrics out the car window and waving our caps in the air. It's one of my favorite memories! This song is the perfect soundtrack for taking on the world!!
One of my favorite songs of all time. Musically it's damn near flawless. The drums, the bass, the horns and of course a master class in pop piano from the worlds foremost expert. Don't even get me started on the lyrics. How Ben Folds never achieved super star status mystifies me.
@@fullblowngaming You and I both know how genius this man is. Sadly, most of the world does not. "Those that know" is nice, but we also both know he doesn't get the recognition he deserves.
the autotune on his vocals is a bit much tho, makes me like the live versions a bit more - but then you usually miss those horns and the crowd saying "ba ba ba ba" never comes close...
Yeah! It's so melancholy and depressing, but at the same time so absurd. The little details like Chick-Fil-A and growing a mullet see to that - it's total first-world problems, but of course when you're living them you don't have that advantage of ironic detachment. Wasting $15,000 of your parents' money is a huge thing. Getting kicked out of a band that is the only thing you have going is practically insurmountable. I love the way he digs in and makes you relate to this misery, no matter how mundane and specific it is.
I listened to this when it first came out. I can't tell you how excited I was a new Ben Folds Five CD came out. We stalked the CD shops....oh ..the days gone by!
Man this song hit home back when it dropped. I was 18 and had nothing going. I thought about the Army too and unlike Ben Folds, I have zero musical talent, and I ended up signing up and going. Such a great band!!!
ThAnk you for your service! And yours is a dynamic real story. I could not have done such but i could just (eventually) play some. i had mostly missed this music era except that "The Luckiest" was requested a few times at Weddings. Yep, gReat song and all the elements in the presentation.
It's 2024 and this is still the best pop song there's been. I'd listen to the horns and the fuzz bass for 10 minutes straight, but it only works because each "movement" passes so quickly. Pop. Perfection. Thanks, Ben.
A uni and college dropout, I can only listen to it every 20 odd years, in very specific circumstances (alone, unseen and slightly inebriated). That is how hard after all this time those lines still hit home.
Oh, Ben. Even in 1999, you were years ahead of your time. Things you sung about 15+ years ago, may it have been serious or as a spoof on nu-metal bands, the words are now more relevant today than ever.
This is hands down the best song about coming to grips with who you are and whete you want to go.basically this is lifes confusing journey in 2plus minutes.good job ben.
One of the best singalong songs of the past 25 years - best enjoyed live with plenty of audience participation ! Superb ! Quite why Ben Folds isn't one of the biggest stars in the world is beyond me - every bit as good as Billy Joel and Elton John IMO.
Sometimes I forget about the brilliance of Robert Sledge and then I revisit Ben Folds Five (I never forget Ben's brilliance) and am giddily reminded of how fucking great (and subsequently underrated) that guy is.
My dad sat me down when I was 19 at a Dennys and gave me a speech about how I should join the airforce. He was in and wanted to do 20 but got out and married. I had stupidly married at 19 and thought I knew everything and brushed it all off. As I got older I wanted to go the Marines route later in life but was blocked everytime with convenient promotions and now here I am in a career in banking years later. I wish I had taken my dads advice. This song just kills me.

I dropped out of highschool and moved to south Florida framing houses for a couple years then moved to Wyoming and spent a few years in the Tetons. When I decided it was time to do something with my life I briefly considered the military, but decided to come back home to Memphis and try my hand at playing on Beale St. for a living. Best decision I ever made.
lol I've been seeing a ton of your reddit narrations and I just randomly came across this, what the fuck. I was thinking the same thing, it's in the title of the show ffs.
I can spell it... I just used to not be able to pronounce it. One time I couldn't pronounce my R's and L's... I swear my first language shouldn't have been English because I speak it horribly! My fam says we have a bit of Irish and maybe even British in our family origin, I mean... I believe it because I'm the only one who has a strong accent, the accent sounds British too... but I was listening to british and Irish accents and they say words like garden and garage differently like me when I hear other people say it... it just feels right to say garage as (gare-idge)
Ben Folds is incredibly talented! I kind of look at him as the nineties reincarnation of Todd Rundgren. He writes and performs music so brilliantly! Happy Fifty-Third Birthday Ben! ~Dutch
I was in middle school and late elementary when I found Ben Folds Five and BF was easily one the most influential bands for me. Also, I was a piano player so seeing a Piano player rock out and have fun was great. Nobody else was really doing that at the time.
I've loved this song for a long time (love the bass). Also haven't listened to it in a while. I've recently been thinking about joining the military (Navy specifically, but I'm almost too old, so also Army), and just re-listened to this song. My mind is melted.
When I was learning to drive the album this song is on was the only one we had. So whenever I'm listening to it it reminds me of long driving trips with my dad. That makes me happy. Thanks Benny.
