I go to the same high school that Ben Folds went to. A couple months ago he returned for a “book reading” which was the first time he’s been back in the auditorium since he graduated. At the end he played this song and said “I finally got to tell you guys this in person” because so many of his previous classmates were in the crowds. Iconic
Robert Sledge does not get ANYWHERE NEAR THE RECOGNITION that he deserves as a fucking MONSTER on the bass. I mean everyone just pretty much remembers Ben Folds 5 for the piano and vocals - that bass though was the key component in making the band sound HUGE despite just being 3 guys.
It's because Sledge spends so much time synergizing with the piano's lower register. He's elevating the piano, and their combined sound is greater than the sum of its parts, but they're so intertwined that it's easy to forget the bass isn't just part of the piano.
My gosh! He is THE master pianist of my world!!! And the lyrics! The vocals! I love Ben Folds!!! Hot Damn!!!! *I seem to be saying that in every comment regarding Ben Folds demonstration of his mastery of the piano!*. He performs with so much PASSION! The piano is like an extension of his body instead of an instrument! I can't believe that the mild-mannered, super serious judge from The Sing-Off is such a force of nature on stage!!!
actually i think his voice is perfect. its not like a perfect choir voice but he sings what he means and he really shows his emotion through the tone of his voice
I made a video to this song once with a camera I borrowed from my boss. At some point, I rolled a dolly by the camera, and now every time I hear this song I just think about that dolly. Good lord.
This should be a major clue to all psychologists, guidance counsellors, bullies and so-called experts who study behaviour, wondering how to stop highschool shootings......introduce them to the power and cathartic release of creative musical composition. You think I'm joking but this song is a revenge and "I told you so" to the folks who tormented poor Ben and he did it through art and commerce. People will misinterpret this and maybe accuse me of oversimplification......but ya'll know I'm onto something here.
This song (and whole album) was the start of my lifelong obsession with Piano (not playing it mind you, I have no actually skills at anything). This song was our generations Billy Joel/Elton John.
I'll always love how in pretty much any instance where Ben is expected to pretend to play piano along to a track, he'll do the most intentionally shitty job of it leaving the video editor to cobble together something that makes it still look somewhat like he's actually playing the song

Only one million views for the one of the greatest if not the greatest piano players of our time ... and then there is my bro who should get his break.
jesus this song is like my whole fucking childhood wrapped up in the fist 2 lines of this song, and now you can see me any sunday on tv playiing golf and laughing all the way to the bank. life is cruel but it all evens out , i know one day my day will come but untill the KISS MY ASS
@SlicedNToasted Rejoice bro! They may have never cracked the top 40 but they are known the world over. Hell, a few months ago Ben Folds himself played a show in Ireland.....IRELAND. Forget the charts man, these guys have a worldwise fanbase.
+Anaryl That is a great idea. Before Game of Thrones I'd thought it would have been a great video if Ben Stiller sang (or lip synced) it, it seemed to fit his younger self.
cumon guys. the whole upside down thing is symbolic of how he turned eveyones world upside from high school. They were all popular, now their nobodies. He was a nobody, now hes the f@#*ing man. Ben Folds kudos to you. way to be a genuis.
The main piano riff of this song sounds very similar to an old 50's piano song called "The Old Piano Roll Blues". (I remember having to learn it when I took piano lessons as a kid). Not saying he "ripped it off" -- musicians borrow chords, riffs and melody ideas from each other all the time and make something completely new. Just wonder if he was consciously making an interpolation of it or if he had never heard it before?
you know, even vids like this that seem simple are extremely hard to create. on a side note, my bro loves this band.that is how i found out about them.
I go to the same high school that Ben Folds went to. A couple months ago he returned for a “book reading” which was the first time he’s been back in the auditorium since he graduated. I was always thought this song was a joke but that’s kinda sad if to true
Wow! He lived the dream! Petty but kind of satisfying too.
He spoke out for his pride, if ya'll think that's weak ya'll must feel like shit and not do anything about it. Sucks for you.
@@aperson245 best way to get revenge on all the bullies
Would be more impressive if they were any good, only here reminging people hiw much they sucked
3am on MTV in 1997... I woke up half asleep with my TV on. Saw this. Fan for life.
Ditto.
So right
It's around 3am and I'm discovering this band! 🤘 2020
When MTV was MUSIC TV. I miss that era...
3 years late but I think I saw that same video😆 same result...2020 and I'm still coming back!

It figures people would remember Ben Folds Five for, well, Ben Folds.
That's a bit harsh on the Five

SLEDGENDARY
Damn! Ben plays that piano like it owes him money!
stfu
Somehow I don't really FEEL the "McLovin"
One of my fav bands still!
And sings like....
Brilliant comment! Made my day lol
Ben Folds Five is one of the best bands ever. It's a delight to see this music video, I didn't even know a video for this existed.
It is my delight today! :)
Ben karate chopping the piano at 2:23 is the best.
Weezer, Beck, Cake and these guys. I forgot how great the 90s were.
The Presidents of The United States of America
One Angry Man and a Piano.
no, just no
My gosh! He is THE master pianist of my world!!! And the lyrics! The vocals! I love Ben Folds!!! Hot Damn!!!! *I seem to be saying that in every comment regarding Ben Folds demonstration of his mastery of the piano!*. He performs with so much PASSION! This was the first song I heard of his. Still one of my favorites. Catchy and creative.
love that piano jam in the middle lol
I still remember how great they were live. Sounds amazing.
The 'Jimi Hendrix' of the Piano.
I completely love this track. It reminds me of 1997.
This is one of the best album openers ever.
OMG I've never seen this video before! LOVE this song....
actually i think his voice is perfect. its not like a perfect choir voice but he sings what he means and he really shows his emotion through the tone of his voice
ben folds make rivers cuomo look like one angry dwarf
about 15 years ago, this was my first blast of BF5; being a bullied kid, I LOVED IT! (and Whatever and Ever amen still kicks ass!)
no one cares about your petty story m8
+McLovin You and no one cares about your piss poor attempt to troll, douche bag.
Also, maybe look up the definition for "petty" followed by "irony" and "hypocrite"
I care
probably one of my fave songs ever this slaps so hard
I made a video to this song once with a camera I borrowed from my boss. At some point, I rolled a dolly by the camera, and now every time I hear this song I just think about that dolly. Good lord.
What a great song. I'm a piano player and this music rocks on the piano :D
+Filipe Patrocínio most of his stuff does!
thanks for the insight filipe
All of his stuff does
Simply the most underrated, misunderstood band ever!
❤
My 5 year old got bullied....makes me think of this song...I forgot how good he/they are. Havent listened to him in a while.
Loved this CD back in 2001 when I was in middle school and its still amazing !!
oh man, I still love this whole album :)
Great songwriter, amazing pianist (who is also a multi-instrumentalist in playing bass and drums), Ben Folds is a total package of talent.
My nephew is 16 and he was playing this group on Instagram ,different song.. Im proud of his music tastes ..
Oh my God! This song rocks so hard, haven't heard it since high school...
My favorite Ben Folds song.
This should be a major clue to all psychologists, guidance counsellors, bullies and so-called experts who study behaviour, wondering how to stop highschool shootings......introduce them to the power and cathartic release of creative musical composition. Hadn't played this in years and just put three on my iphone (after loosing the cassette so many years ago) Man, memories indeed.

Ben Folds is a true gem! 😍
Hell of musician... Ben's from my home town Winston Salem
Never has the gap between a song I love so much and visuals I hate so much been so wide!
I'll always love how in pretty much any instance where Ben is expected to pretend to play piano along to a track, he'll do the most intentionally shitty job of it leaving the video editor to cobble together something that makes it still look somewhat like he's actually playing the song
Keith Moon used to do the same with his drums. 😆
Still Watching this in 2015? Yeah!
+Chloe the great 2016 :) and going!
Marce Sol 2017!
2019!
2020!
Cough... 2021
Total genius love you shirt Ben
I'm tempted to start giving 1/5 stars for every video that has an advert. regardless of how much I like it
If you could see it now
Man, love this song.
Happy birthday Ben Folds!
just saw him last night in Charleston, wv. great show even without the band. worked the crowd all night. great time had by all
BEN FOLDS FIVE IS BACKKKKKKK. Helllzzzz yeah. Loving "Do it Anyway".
I wouldn't doubt that Ben could play piano with his elbows. He's a god at piano. lol
Interesting note: There is no guitar in Ben Folds Five - just piano, bass and drums
Interesting note: There is no five in Ben Folds Five - just three
Just one instrument above Keane, who have a drummer, a keyborad player and a singer that doesn't play a single thing.
Interesting Note: Ben Folds is actually his name, not just the name of the band.
Saw him live in Adelaide a few weeks ago, Such a great show with not a single dull point; Gotta love his signature stance at the piano!
If you can say nothing else, the man just destroys a piano.

A bad ass mother G.I. Joe
For your little minds to blow

Look who's tellin' who what to do
Kiss my ass good-bye
Don't give me that bullshit

This song slams so hard, there's nothing quite like it.
This is one of the greatest "fuck you" songs ever!
Those piano chords are next level
Only one million views for the one of the greatest if not the greatest piano players of our time ... and then there is my bro who should get his break.

This album is ESSENTIAL!
the title of this song sums up my life pretty well
Saw Benny play a few months ago, I so badly wanted to hear this song live but alas he kept to more of his solo work.
Best Ben Folds Song By Far!!!
"Is THAT an OSTRICHE or an EMU" ?
- St. HMAJW.
I LOOOOOOOOVE THIS BAND!!!!!!!!!
Such an underrated song!
I love how the band in the music video is playing Underground, like their other song
Piano never sounded so rock & roll. DAYUM!!
Ben folds is one of the coolest men alive
Ben Folds. So awesome, he defies gravity.
"September 75, I was 47 inches high."
I LOVE this song so much. It makes me laugh so hard.
This song always rocks my socks! ! ! !!!! !! !! !! ! !!! !
!
Fan for life is the long and short of it.
Even the most interesting man in the world holds the door for Ben Folds.
@SlicedNToasted Rejoice bro! They may have never cracked the top 40 but they are known the world over. Hell, a few months ago Ben Folds himself played a show in Ireland.....IRELAND.
Forget the charts man, these guys have a worldwise fanbase.
YES! for all the shorties that got out of small town nowhere and made something of themselves!
is a sentiment taken from an interpretation of lyrics, perhaps colored by a listener's own experiences, that serious for you?
I loved living this it still reminds me.... don’t sweat the little people lmao
if only i could play jazz piano and drums like Ben Folds and Darren Jessee
just brilliant piano playing ... they say it all and i wish they would sill keep playing.....
Great song!
!
Siempre ame esta canción y nunca daba con ella no recordaba más que el vídeo 💚💚💚💚
so good
What a pianist
Love it....love it love it love it
This song makes me think of Tyrion.
I was just thinking that! It pretty much fits him in King's Landing.
+Anaryl That is a great idea. Before Game of Thrones I'd thought it would have been a great video if Ben Stiller sang (or lip synced) it, it seemed to fit his younger self.
Hah! I think that exact thought crossed through my mind when I first heard it. This is like his theme song.
素人考えだけど、初めてこの曲を聴いた時衝撃を受けました。ジャズの要素とドラム・ボーカルの兼ね合いも良く、他にはないオリジナルな楽曲だと思いました。
aww man i remember the first time i hear this song from project dck good times
this album is SO GREAT that I had 2 have the hands tattooed on me...
cumon guys. the whole upside down thing is symbolic of how he turned eveyones world upside from high school. They were all popular, now their nobodies. He was a nobody, now hes the f@#*ing man. Ben Folds kudos to you. way to be a genuis.
