I have a theory that Niftski is actually a machine sent back in time to protect John Conner. But now that that’s done, he needed a new purpose and took up speed running. For a while, he avoided matching the tas, as to not garner too much suspicion, but lately he’s been getting a little careless. Laugh all you want but that’s still a better story than the last 4 Terminator movies.
My friends and I "invented" speed runs in the mid 80's out of sheer boredom at the local Putt-Putt game room. Of course they were no where the caliber of the modern era. Once completing the game was a cinch, trying to complete levels as fast as possible was the next logical progression. I am sure hundreds of people all over had the same idea about the same time. This was in the arcade version and not the home or even Play-Choice version.
I find it funny that the part I find most surprising about this is that the warp zone Piranha Plants have hitboxes! The way they show up for such a short time and then disappear made me think they were just for show, which I guess might be part of the reason they make you run over the whole area first before reaching the pipes if you don't glitch into the area.
I used to think they were just for show too, but nope, they're fully functional Piranha Plant entities. IIRC, SMB1 and Lost Levels are hardcoded to spawn Pirahna Plants in every pipe (this way the level data doesn't have to include plant locations). SMB1 special-cases 1-1 to avoid them spawning, but otherwise every single pipe has a plant, so they have to intentionally despawn them when a warp zone is triggered.
Best (visual) explanation of subpixels I've seen yet... Never occurred to me the subpixels trying to "be hit" weren't at the very first or last possibilities of that one visual frame.
quick explanation of how the bouncing off enemies works. it's basically a combination of are they rising level or falling, is mario rising or falling and front or back of the enemy you jump on
title is complete click bait!!!11! I clicked on this expecting a video about mario speedrunning and instead I got a video about luigi speedrunning, I expect a full apology video for your crimes
I'm so old I first saw that game on a Famicom cartridge plugged to a NES cartridge through a converter adapter that someone had bring in his pockets on the plane from Japan. People used to call it Mario game with wind.
As a casual player, I found it much easier to beat this game with Luigi. Many of the jumps seemed designed for his distance and height--playing with Mario felt like a very challenging handicap. And since I wasn't speedrunning, Luigi's slipperiness really didn't bother me. Thanks for the great video!
Yeah Luigi definitely feels more even with Mario in a more casual standard playthrough. It's similar to SMB2(USA) in that regard, because in speedruns, Mario is used in one level, Peach in 1, Luigi in 5, and Toad for all of the others because of his faster speed.
You videos keep getting better. I think especially because you get better at them. The voice use, tone of voice and mixture between technical and storytelling is all done so well.
Glad to hear some Luigi love from you Kosmic. I feel it too. A lot of times the slipperiness is important because other wise Luigi would just be OP af with his jumps.
I always notice the music choices for the background. I hear that superstar saga music. God I love that game, always replay it every few years. Probably going to here soon.
I love to play as Luigi his gameplay is more difficult than Mario's with the slipperiness and higher jumps. I love how you broke down the Luigi and Mario differences in speedrunning. I'm going to practice Luigi's flagpole glitch.
Scalpel being the only one in the same Solar System as Niftski says so much about both playing as Luigi and the level at which they play. Niftski can just tap into Ultra Instinct, seemingly at will. I can't help but wonder if he'll ever run out of things to do in SMB1 and 2 because he's capable of straight-up perfection. (Also, nice to see a brief KingBoo97 cameo in here.)
Love it! Good for Niftski. Great video, Kosmic. You’re up there with Summoning Salt for world record speedrun explanations and history. Keep up the good work.
Excellent video all around. Super engaging commentary, easy to understand explanations and great taste in music, like M&L Superstar Saga and Paper Mario TTYD.
7:05 YEAH STANLEY CHAPEL!!! I DIDN'T KNOW YOU DID SPEEDRUNNING TOO BUT THAT'S AWESOME!!! Btw for any of you who don't know Stanley Chapel / Scalpel, he is literally the fastest Rubik's Cube solver in the world. Not even joking. This is overall in all 17 events combined.
I have never speedrun any game in my life, in fact I’m not even good at time trials. But i love seeing random updates on the Mario speedrunning status every few months or however long between increments in progress. I’ve never even finished the game 😂
My very first warpless run in this game, in All-Stars, was with Luigi. I thought his high jump came in handy so much that it was easier overall. Now I know that probably wasn't the case, but I still have my World 9 Challenge patch from Nintendo Power 30+ years later. They should've made a Luigi version!
I was always confused as to how the community accepted time, especially in games where single frames are of importance like SMB NES, when there could be so much human error involved lol
Near the end I talk about how we can tell how fast the run is based on the hammers bowser throws at the end. It's really nice since it removes any errors in recording, etc. and definitively tells you how fast you arrived at Bowser from power-on. We also factor in lag frames and if you lose any frames on the jump to the axe.

Once completing the game was a cinch, trying to complete levels as fast as possible was the next logical progression. I am sure hundreds of people all over had the same idea about the same time. This was in the arcade version and not the home or even Play-Choice version.
There's also the sub category of low%, where being fastest is secondary to completing less.
@@fatcerberusi never thought about the reason they appear at all in the warp zone, you're completely right
Wow, over half an hour of kosmic, this’ll be good
It’s always so interesting to see what really goes into these runs.
Who also first thought that huge PAL speedrun in SMB happened? I really thought so from title and thumbnail.
2:24 "I got waffles, but I ate them too fast I couldn't get any footage. Oops."
This right here is peak relatability
6:50 lmao of course its niftski jfc what a legend 😂😂😂
I didn't know I'd like smb speedruns until i found this channel. The editing is great as well.
Best (visual) explanation of subpixels I've seen yet... Never occurred to me the subpixels trying to "be hit" weren't at the very first or last possibilities of that one visual frame.
Crazy how the world record for Super Mario was just beaten, only a month after this video was uploaded. Great job!
the fact that luigi's acceleration is also bad in cutscenes is wild
21:15 Luigi does catch at least *one* break in life
A luigi video???? Now I'm hooked
The explanation of why Luigi is worse than Mario in 2J with that music Ceave gaming used in his videos was great
7:17
Oh, I have to play SMB2J immediately.
quick explanation of how the bouncing off enemies works. it's basically a combination of are they rising level or falling, is mario rising or falling and front or back of the enemy you jump on
SPL? Holy how precise that is. Sub-pixels are the parts of a pixel, the RGB parts. Wow.
I don't think subpixels even get drawn as the individual colors on a pixel. They're completely invisible, which makes the whole thing even crazier
I've been told from several sources that Hello Fresh isn't really all that fresh
I love the dive into the ram values
title is complete click bait!!!11! I clicked on this expecting a video about mario speedrunning and instead I got a video about luigi speedrunning, I expect a full apology video for your crimes

I mean his name is Luigi Mario
So it's still a Mario speedrun

Oh man! The nostalgia hit from that Duck Tales music!
I played it on GameBoy, such a difficult game but that music is ingrained into my brain.
I’ve stopped saying “that’s real nifty” and started saying “that’s real Niftsky”
Solid choice on the music. Love the Moon Theme from Ducktales! Awesome video and thanks for the info.
Glad to hear some Luigi love from you Kosmic. I feel it too. A lot of times the slipperiness is important because other wise Luigi would just be OP af with his jumps.
I've met Scalpel in person at speedsolving competitions and seeing him in a Kosmic video is so weird lol
I wonder how would the community react if Nifkti’s runs were discovered to be fake.
4:47 I've never even considered that control scheme for an emulator... I'll have to give it a try some time!
0:59 when it said “Quincy” I immediately thought Bleach 😂
I always notice the music choices for the background. I hear that superstar saga music. God I love that game, always replay it every few years. Probably going to here soon.
I love to play as Luigi his gameplay is more difficult than Mario's with the slipperiness and higher jumps. I love how you broke down the Luigi and Mario differences in speedrunning. I'm going to practice Luigi's flagpole glitch.
I love the elevator music during the video. or a 1990's corporate welcome video. can't decide which one this more closely resembles
Who here missed Mario 35 a lot still?
Love seeing Jhay on the vid. Been watching his Galaxy runs for about two years.
26:00 I first thought you were bringing up the standard bus framerule since 8-4 in SMB1 is talked about as having "no framerule"
You explained everything really well I’ve watched summon salt videos but I never knew the specifics this is so cool!
Love these explanations of the top end of speedrunning. Always need communicators like yourself!
Never knew that the pipe in world 5 could take you back to the start of the level, great video on all the pixel perfect precision to pull this off.
When you see that keyboard in the top left you know some kind of Mario history is about to be made…
Great video as always. I particularly laughed at the bus clearing the bowser bridge animation. Keep up the good work!
Amazing vod Kosmic! Love the detailed explanations😊
Always appreciate you on the cutting edge of the Mario world. Hope things keep going well
those speedrunners are a diffrent kind of breed. i love this content
knowing about stanley chapel from being a cuber makes it really funny to hear you him called scalpel
I WAS IN THE ROOM NEXT DOOR WHEN SCAPEL SET 5X5 BLIND WORLD RECORD!!!!
I really love your explanation here. And the overall history of past records.
Btw... keyboards instead of a controller. Such a mad man. Huge respect
7:02 Very cool that a speedrunner's skills are this ranged
Mario speedrunners are a different breed, I could never pull any of this off.
I have never speedrun any game in my life, in fact I’m not even good at time trials. But i love seeing random updates on the Mario speedrunning status every few months or however long between increments in progress. I’ve never even finished the game 😂
Niftski the goat and nobody is particularly close
Niftski is to speedrunning what flash is to starcraft broodwar
And he used a keyboard. Which is cheating.
You are literally the only person who thinks that.@@TheAaronRodgersTao
Luigi has no friction because his soul is pure
I heard a song in this video before, it was in a super mario maker 2 review from before it released
Hooray for Luigi speedruns! Always glad to see my favorite SMB character in the spotlight.
Great introduction and explanation!! I love your step by step guide to Mario (Luigi, in this case) speedruns
It's so fascinating to see. All this precision... And he plays with a keyboard. Unbelievable.
Keyboard is actually more precise than controller.
Niftski is maybe also one of the loudest speedrunners
I was always confused as to how the community accepted time, especially in games where single frames are of importance like SMB NES, when there could be so much human error involved lol
Near the end I talk about how we can tell how fast the run is based on the hammers bowser throws at the end. It's really nice since it removes any errors in recording, etc. and definitively tells you how fast you arrived at Bowser from power-on. We also factor in lag frames and if you lose any frames on the jump to the axe.
Don't they have to submit the video? Website can time it.
FanTASTIC video, as always. LOVE this content you've been putting out. Applying your expertise like this is *chef's kiss*
