I’m a 55 yr old Navy vet. That song gets me every time, especially when the Dad writes him. I got letters from Mom and girlfriend all the time, but I never cried until I got one from my Dad a week before bootcamp graduation. My Dad being a 12 yr Marine, I finally felt that he was proud of me. That letter hit harder than any letter I ever recieved. Sorry this was so long, THANKS

Back in December 2005 while on my second deployment to Iraq,I still remember a letter sent to the Army Times by a woman who said something like this;'I am a single mother of 2 children and every night I put them to sleep,we pray for you,our American service members who, thru you own sacrifices, allow us to sleep tonight..I can only hope and wish, that you and your friends, along with your own families, have a very merry Christmas".

The year this song came out my best friend’s older brother was KIA. John Michael Montgomery was scheduled to perform at a local fair and when he got to this song he dedicated it to his family who was there. I attended with them and after the show he invited us backstage to meet him and he gave his condolences.

My family dropped me off at a hotel that I was staying at til I went to basic training and we said our good byes and about 20 min later dad was at the door knocking. He grabbed me in a huge huge and told me how proud he was of me. Mom and my gf said dad cried the whole way home. One of the best moments of my life. Always wanted him to be proud of me. I will never hear this song and not think about that moment.

The greatest thing I ever got while at war was a letter from my dad saying he was proud.

I was deployed in 2013 and we lost a lot and used to sing this with an ol guitar I found in Afghanistan from a soldier leaving country. It really helped us make it through that deployment. And I will tell you that those letters mean everything to us.

I wrote my brother all the time during his 3 tours with the USMC. It broke my heart to hear how many guys didnt get mail - I cleared out the local Target of all those stupid kids boxes of valentines and wrote them all out so they'd all have something, and sent boxes of chocolate and deodorant and the other random things guys in the desert needed. I think about all the servicefolk who don't get mail and my heart hurts for them.

I can't even get past thr first verse without being made a victim of onion chopping ninjas. As someone who has received no shortage of letters from home during OIF2, (2004-2005) IT TRULY HELPED us remember who and what we were fighting for. 😊

Talked with a lot of servicemen, they always say that those letters are a Godsend. Just a little something from home can do wonders for their psyche

Nothing better was getting a care package from the folks while overseas. Cookies and other baked goods to share with the boys from ma was always the best. Old man would send us magazines and books.

When I was in Afghanistan my parents would send me letters and care packages all the time. My dad even sent me a chess board marked with letters and numbers to correspond with the moves so we could play a long distance game of chess. Never found out who won. The guy in the bunk above me climbed out of bed and flipped the board over one morning on accident. This song always makes me cry remembering those times.

It's crazy to think of the different world we are in now, I used to write my mom letters every week and make packages till I joined. She's out now but I call her every chance I get and it's like I was writing those letters. I tell her everything and she just understands, and sometimes we don't talk. Sometimes we just sit there and cry. God bless all y'all who are also overseas or stationed far from home. It may not be the same as the last generation but it's twice the time for half the trauma. We may not have it hard in a danger sense but we all understand not seeing those close to us like we used to.

People who have not had loved ones in the military, especially those who served during an active campaign, will never understand what it feels like to wander day and at night if you are loved one is alive or dead. It’s a kind of torment that you have to experience to understand.

My youngest brother is an Army Ranger, and it's terrifying. But we do send him tons of care packages, I always include face masks and he laughs but then he send me pictures of him and his buddies doing them. LOL But it's super hard because we know when he's deployed, but we never know where he is, or how long he's going to be gone... they give them a tentative return date, but it's often well past that before he gets back stateside.

This song has always sorta gotten to me and im not really sure why... My brother was in the army but it was a time when cell phones were becoming more relevant so it was easier to hear from him, and he wasnt really out in any battle areas....
However, i think this is the first time ive heard this since my dad passed a year ago and i completely lost it that last verse/bridge.... I wish i could hear my dad tell me hes proud of me one more time........

It sucks walking past a tv with the big news channels and they talk about convoys running over an IED and shit and not knowing if you family or friends are ok. My best friend is a Marine and he did two tours in Afghan in 2013-14 thank god he made it threw it

I remember my wife telling me about yelling at a couple officers walking around our apartment complex in class A’s, looking lost. She knew approximately where I was, and she’d seen the news. They asked her for directions to someone’s apartment.
I hadn’t been able to talk to her in a few days because we were informing someone else’s family they had died.
The stress that has to put on you I can only imagine and I don’t want to hear what she said, but I can imagine. They were just going to a party or something, but that had to rock her for days, “my husband is dead” just running in her brain when they knocked our door. He hasn’t called, he hasn’t emailed, and they said on the news that someone is dead where he might be.
    That’s a uniquely cr*p version of stress.

Your wife's story reminds me of the death letter I received by accident from my husband of 20 yrs at that point who was at a FOS in Afghanistan. They were at a top secret base, but I had a pretty good idea where. Anyway Myself and my kids received the letters that soldiers write before a mission to their family just in case, and ours had been stuck in the regular mail. Took 4 days to find out everything was ok and it was a mistake. PTSD to this day when I think back even though we are now divorced

Glad to hear it turned out ok in the end. I hate those letters, they’re kind of necessary because that does happen, but what magical thing can you say?
My wife was in the guard and also had a TS/SCI so I felt comfortable getting pretty specific about where I was. And our FRG was something else. I cheated on her with a captain I barely knew… news to me.
War is a delightful experience that doesn’t mess with you at all in ways that you can’t explain. And it won’t effect your family.
