I've seen this video so many times and every time it is hard to get through. To come out of that bunker knowing he was dying or going to die and still fighting to save the men that came to rescue him is just bravery of the highest order.
Everytime I watch this footage I cry. From one vet to another, I thank you for your service and your ultimate sacrifice to save the lives of many. God bless you.
We got so many here at home that have turned thier backs on these sacrifices. We've had it so good for so long our kids are losing site of what it takes to maintain this life.

Two Medal of Honor bestowed upon a son, father, husband, brother (his fellow soldiers) and friend. Truly a man of integrity and love. Only 19 have this and of those only 5 have received the Medal of Honor twice in one engagement. My respect and prayers go out to the soldiers and families that sacrifice so much for our chance to live and learn without worry.
He initially received the Air Force Cross. After one of the Seals that was at that battle had his Navy Cross upgraded to the Medal of Honor. The Air Force them to take another look at John Chapman's case for the Medal of Honor. That's when this footage was unearthed, and his Air Force was upgraded to the Medal of Honor. As of 1919, no one can receive more than one Medal of Honor. So whomever did the commentary on the video was wrong in making the assumption of a 2nd Medal of Honor. He received the 1, for the entirety of the battle.
Many may not realize that the view of the unreleased video has much better resolution, thus how they can narrative what we only see as blurred images. Blurred to keep secret just how much they can see, amazing technology. God Bless Sgt John Chapman and the others that died that day. I choke up every time I see this, but can't stop revisiting every so often.
This reminds me of a quote from the show Red vs Blue: "There are so many stories where some brave hero decides to give their life to save the day, and because of their sacrifice, the good guys win, the survivors all cheer, and everybody lives happily ever after. But the hero... never gets to see that ending. They'll never know if their sacrifice actually made a difference. They'll never know if the day was really saved. In the end, they just have to have faith. Ain't that a bitch."

Naval Special Warfare Command tried to block Chapman's Medal of Honor, as it would result in an admission that they left Chapman behind. A complete BS move. What this leaves out is it took years to get him the MoH he so greatly earned. From this action he also received the Purple Heart; Bronze and Silver Stars our nations 2nd & 3rd hugest honors
Look into roy benavidez he was a green barret that survived gernade blasts airstrikes that were dropped very close to him while being shot multiple of times wall the while resuing 8 of his comrades in vietnam with nothing but bowie knife and med kits.
The Green Beret who went on a 1 man rampage to save his comrades. Indeed a badass. Not to mention, he suffered a serious injury that would have led to him being discharged from the Army prior to his MOH action.
Previous to the actions that earned him his MoH, he was paralyzed and told he would never walk again. He taught himself to walk, hiding from the nurses, at night while he was in the hospital.

I lost two of my brothers in Afghanistan and Iraq....It hurts beyond comprehension, but I'm so proud of them for serving in my place since I was medically unable to serve with them.
This was part of Operation Anaconda, which was our largest battle in Afghanistan at that time. The entire operation was fubar from the start, well before Neil Roberts fell out of the helicopter and required rescuing. We lost 5 men on that mountain and at least a dozen were injured because TF 11 commanders ignored intelligence and the operation rules by landing not one, not two, but three helicopters in the same spot and all were downed. It was a bloody couple of weeks. Oh, and I believe New Zealand SAS was involved in this operation. There are a few really great books about this, including a biography of John Chapman called Alone At Dawn.

You can't forget about the French who basically did all the work to get your independents...
@@Lauren-p5x What do you think ALL OTHERS means ? The coalition included at least 30 different countries. One of those being FRANCE. However, I was addressing the Aussies and Kiwis whom share much when it comes to the U.K. They have little to do with the French. FYI, don't forget to leave out the French were paid mercenaries during the U.S. revolutionary war.
@@Lauren-p5x I think he was referring to the help in WWII. But it is also true that we often forget about the help from the French in the American fight for independence, *severely* criticizing them when they do not agree with us on some contemporary issue.
@@sonsofthunder915 The upper class leaders were risking their social positions and, in the French revolution, risking the guillotine. although the guillotine was not a feared presence until after our constitution of 1789.
The French only joined the war, when it looked like their was a higher possibility of winning. The Americans had to do the initial lifting.
Your kids are so smart and interested in all of these things. I just love them.
"I wonder if he had a family?" That just broke me. Dang.
Wife, two kids
I think there is an old saying that goes something like, "You serve in the military for love of your country, but you fight and die for the people standing beside and around you."
No matter how many times I see or hear his story I'm brought to tears. I'm glad there is footage of a modern day Gladiator. RIP Sir.
Absolutely appreciate your respect for the soldiers. Always love watching your reactions. Husband was a marine who served in Iraq after 9/11, father was Army and served in Vietnam. I have tons of uncles, cousins, nephews who have been in service so when I see how respectful people are towards the military it warms my heart and I appreciate it so much! Much love from my family here in Alabama to yours, God Bless!

I truly believe when they said he was mortally wounded the first time in the torso he died and went before God Almighty and he sent him back to protect his fellow soldiers before he finally was shot thru the heart!! A true hero in my eyes and may you RIP.. 😢
Seals are too stubborn to accept the gates he had work to do and just said nope.... hit the snooze button one more time and got back to it..... he wasn't going to let God take anymore if he could do something about it .... and he did .... he couldn't stop God but he could slow down the traffic at the gates
@@chrishinkley5743 To be technical, this was an Air Force Combat Controller. SEALs are amazing and dedicated but thhe Air Force has a few that deserve as much respect. Combat Controllers and Pararescue are just as important and just as much on the razor's edge as anyone. Check the Pararescue motto. "These Things We Do, That Others May Live." I showed that video to my father, a Vietnam War veteran. He watched it in complete silence, and broke into tears at the very end.
He's not the kind of man that cries. But he cried.
Thank you for reacting to this video
❤🤍💙🇺🇲 Much love to our active U.S. military and veterans. We thank you!
I've seen this video so many times and every time it is hard to get through. To come out of that bunker knowing he was dying or going to die and still fighting to save the men that came to rescue him is just bravery of the highest order.
You lot do NZ so proud. We appreciate the love. Thank you.
Army Infantry vet here. Chapman was all courage from head to toe. Awesome family you've got there. Great to see you walk through stuff like this with your kids.
Currently serving in the U.S Army on active duty, glad to see your support and much love watching you guys being away from my own family!
It's extremely flattering and almost makes me choking up seeing our NZ friebds not only take time to watch this, but to also include your children.
Fills me up with pride and admiration. Terrific family, bless you guys.
Its wonderful to see how you teach your kids about all of life's realities, both good and sad. We can see how well your babies are learning! Great job mom & dad! ❤ from America!
That's the most amazing hero I have ever heard of!! Superman who? Just, WOW! This is hy first time viewing this!
MNZF, you are amazing people that I would love to have in my country!👍🤗
As vetran I appreciate you making thiss video
This reminds me of a quote from the show Red vs Blue: "There are so many stories where some brave hero decides to give their life to save the day, and because of their sacrifice, the good guys win, the survivors all cheer, and everybody lives happily ever after. But the hero... never gets to see that ending. They'll never know if their sacrifice actually made a difference. They'll never know if the day was really saved. In the end, they just have to have faith. Ain't that a bitch."

The public will never know or understand what we go or have gone through both during combat and back home stateside. But you and your family seem to respect and appreciate and even understand to a point what me and my fellow soldiers have had to endure. And for that, I thank you and your family. From the bottom of my heart, Thank You❤. Reactions like this make many years of sustained combat worth it. You folks will always have someone here in America that has your Six. I’ve seen this video about 5 or 6 times. Each time it has brought me to tears. I keep thinking about the courage of this man and his comrades. I don’t know if I could do what they did. May Sgt. Chapman and all the men who died here rest in peace.
Thank you all. I met John, he was a good guy. I was in the Army at the time serving overseas next door to him and John was a funny and friendly guy and great soldier.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE how you guys are teaching your children what it's like to fight for freedom, to sacrifice everything for something you believe in and teaching them to recognize the bravery within.

Thanks for always remembering our fallen heroes. God bless you. And remember the USA will always have New Zealand's back.
I did not know this story and I usually watch documentaries about our brave soldiers. There is a movie, old, about Sgt. York, starring Gary Cooper. This is a true story and probably too long to view on your channel, but well worth the viewing. Your family is one of the greatest examples of what good parenting is about. God Bless our Military men and women.
Sgt. York in WWI, Sgt. Audie Murphy in WWII.
Audie Murphy starred as himself in "To Hell And Back". It was based on his autobiography as the most decorated soldier in the war.

Respect for showing and teaching your kids about soldiers sacrificing there lives so others can have there freedom and justice.
Our navy seals are some of the most highly trained in the world but that type of courage is somthing mental to have the shear will to do what he did is really amazing and inspiring
I agree. Chapman was an Air Force Combat Controller. Those guys have incredibly challenging jobs as well.
Naval Special Warfare Command tried to block Chapman's Medal of Honor, as it would result in an admission that they left Chapman behind.
A complete BS move.
When it became apparent that it could not be blocked, it was further alleged that the Navy put the commander of the operation, Britt K. Slabinski, up for the Medal of Honor.
I come from a Navy family, my Dad, Mother, and first cousin were all Navy. If they had lived to see the Navy pull this crap they would have gone ballistic.
@@douglascampbell9809 Not surprising. Higher command blocks awards all the time. This is what happens when high level chair polishers decide to butt into things.

@@douglascampbell9809 sadly that's true. NSWC tried to block it. As a #USAF #Veteran, thank you for sharing part of our story with your children. It brings me to tears.
Never give up - life’s greatest lesson.
Even when you fail, you succeed. “The Greatest Comeback that Never Was,” by Bleacher Report is something you should share with your kids. It’s a sports story that explains how you will be remembered if you aren’t in the military and never give up. The story is a #Texas LEGEND.
I watched this video several years ago. It is a heart wrenching look at the horrors of war. As a USNavy veteran, these stories hit hard and are very emotional. Thank you for learning about our country, and honoring our military members. Be Safe and Be Blessed.
My Mother told me this story over and over as a child. I never forgot the phrase "freedom isn't free".
The Green Beret who went on a 1 man rampage to save his comrades. Indeed a badass. Not to mention, he suffered a serious injury that would have led to him being discharged from the Army prior to his MOH action.
Yes that man was a hero!
Previous to the actions that earned him his MoH, he was paralyzed and told he would never walk again. He taught himself to walk, hiding from the nurses, at night while he was in the hospital.
Roy Benavidez is a bonafide fucking badass.
Once again, as a citizen of the USA, I thank the NZ family for educating me about my country.
"Greater love hath no man........" RIP John Chapman.
A different level of courage with out a damn doubt. Thank you JOHN.
Just for clarification, by "recorded" it means "filmed"
Also not the first to be awarded the MOH many a soldiers and special forces were awarded before chapman
@@davidsalinas676 The distinction is that prior awards relied on multiple first person testimonies. This was the first time that drone surveillance of the action in progress was submitted. Other times, the drone would have shown after action conditions.
@@CaptainFrost32 I get where you are saying maybe its how the title to me is misleading it could have been worded better like first MOH event caught on drone film. Idk

As a Vietnam war veteran I love how your family shows much respect for our military. I can also say that I had the honor and privilege of training in Australia and New Zealand. I would love to go back for a visit but I'm not getting any younger. Much respect for your entire family. Stay Safe.
Thank you for your service, sir! One of the reasons I enjoy their channel is for the same reason. Such great parents and wonderful children. Australia & New Zealand have always been on my bucket list but I'm not getting any younger either. Now, I do all my traveling on You-Tube. I've taken drone tours of most states, seen most of the National Parks & Monuments, Arlington National Cemetary, Mount Rushmore. Route 66, Hwy 101 in CA, the 8 Ancient Wonders of the World & the new ones too, so many countries I can't count. The list goes on & on. So, I will not get to them physically, but I will experience them the way I can. And, the world never ceases to amaze me. I had never seen this footage. Thank your for your service Sgt. Chapman, you're a hero to many.
I read the book not long ago. Apparently he was not only a physical ace, but a genuinely great guy. He was probably as close to Captain America as you can find in real life.
They found this footage in 2018. His wife accepted the Medal Of Honor for him. They are in the process of making a movie at this time. Jake Gyllenhaal, an American actor that you may know is set to portray John Chapman. They have had to delay it a few times because of the pandemic but, have resumed the filming of the movie this year. This was the very first Medal of Honor to be captured on video by a drone. He was survived by his wife and daughters. His wife was devastated but, she said she was not surprised by his courage and honor. Thank You for showing this video.

Robert's Ridge and Not a Good Day to Die were also about Operation Anaconda. It was a rough couple of weeks.
