I tried naltrexone. I would wait the hour and then I drank through it. I don't think I was very motivated at that time. The biggest thing that helped me was when I was craving alcohol I would eat first. I tried for carbs and protein. I would then have a sweet treat. Rarely did I start to drink once my tummy was full. I really focused on food. Which was the opposite of what I was doing, drinking on an empty stomach so I could get that buzz going. I also used CBD from time to time. I've been 3 years alcohol free as of yesterday. I can't ever imagine going back to that dark and ugly place.

Naltrexone, my psychiatrist put me on it, even if i drink i can't feel the effect, feel full and no desire to keep drinking. I was reluctant to take it because it needs liver monitoring, and I'm a degenerate alcoholic who thinks i can control my drinking. 3 weeks and I'm doing great, going to meetings, (group therapy) taking it seriously this time, i don't want to end up in the hospital again or the detox facility. FFFFF THAT. Cheer up mates, it has to get better.

Everything we say to our doctor actually isn't private. With EMR (electronic medical record) ALL of our medical information is shared with Every medical provider we see. So nothing is actually confidential. This is disturbing to me.
Even Before EMR, my primary care doctor referred me to a dermatologist. Imagine my shock, horror and utter humiliation upon glancing at my chart on the door... At the top of the list was Alcoholic/Alcoholism. Hadn't yet met this new Dr... but she immediately sure had an opinion of me.

If you substitute “pizza” and “waffle fries” with “a bottle” that is exactly the way my mind worked! So many applicable concepts in your videos LD! Being sober helps with the resolve for sure. You mention wine being like a gateway to the next bad decision. That’s what beer was for me. Also, I lost my brother in law to opioids. Addiction has impacts far outside of the individual. My family is still healing 2 years later. Thanks for what you do brutha! You have truly been a gift.

i took antabuse for 3 years. honestly this medicine was super helpful as it makes you sick if you drink. even if you stop taking it there is time where it is still in your system and still effective. so that was enough for me bc it stopped the impulsiveness and made it have to be a more planned thing, which was enough of a deterrent. then i switched to naltrexone for a bunch more years. it actually took away the dopamine rush i used to get from music. i was stable and chose to stop taking it - in part bc of the music, but mostly bc i wanted to get off of one of the many meds i was taking (for mental illness). so it was legitimately an appropriate time for me overseen by a psychiatrist and therapist. i have been sober for 9 and a half years.

Thanks for the info, LD! I've heard the name Naltrexone, but I didn't know anything about it or that it could be used to treat AUD! I know there are medications such as Acamprosate (Campral) to help with cravings, and Disulfuram (Antabuse) that makes you sick if you drink on it. I've taken both and neither one really worked for me. Of course, I foolishly kept drinking while taking Antabuse and it made me feel like absolute crap! I had mentioned this in the past, here on your channel. Just one drink while on Antabuse will give you the worse headache, dizziness, flushed skin, and horrible nausea! It basically acts as a deterrent by making you feel super drunk after a tiny amount of alcohol. Not surprisingly, Antabuse is not a very popular medication based on what I've heard from other people. I think it's kind of draconian, actually! It may work for some people though, so more power to them!

Took me years to quit, and still not even sure if I’m done. I started taking the Naltrexone pills, but soon learned that I could just not take the pill in the morning if I wanted to drink. Then I did a total of 20 monthly injections over 3 years. I actually drank on it for the first many months. This last time I took it every 3 weeks instead of every 4 weeks for about 7 months and that seemed to make a difference. It’s all about persistence. I hated taking the shot but the alternative is worse.

  • @raymondlin8728

I quit 2 memorial weekends ago. Almost 19 months ago. If I didn't stop I'd still be drinking 1 box wine and a case of beer a week. That's a lot of liquor and definitely a lot of damage to my liver.
But, 19 months. No alcohol. Just water, coffee, tea, sometimes diet soda if I need fizz in my drink
    19 x 4 = 76 week, or
76 wine box didn't enter my mouth, my liver, my blood,
    76 pack of beer too.

I see your point but Alcohol is the only substance we add an -ic to the end of as a ways of identifying a person. Someone addicted to cigarettes aren’t a “cigarette-ic” or someone addicted to coffee isn’t a “coffee-ic.” AUD is the only disease in which someone identifies themselves with.

It’s not new, it’s been around for a decade or longer.
