Usually it’s not the capacitors, it’s more or likely the RSX (the GPU). They were known for their insane power consumption and heat output. The 90 nm variants (the ones found in the launch models) had the most issues. When they started decreasing the size, this decreased power consumption and made them a lot cooler temperature wise. This is why the later Phats, Slims, and Super Slims are the more desirable models, even though they lose PS2 backwards compatibility

I have one of my 10 YLOD PS3 (yeah, I know, its a lot and I bought it in 2020, so, I got no much time to fix these guys) and I can play other games normally, but It shutdowns with Burnout. In this moment it is oppened in a basement waiting for me to fix this issue, I guess I will do like you did...
How did you know just to replace the Nec Tokin caps to get it to work again? Did you think to use syscon to read the errors? Is the condole still working? Cheers
Ohne viel Worte aber trotzdem gut verständlich!.Mich würde aber noch interessieren welchen Controller benutzt du denn da am Ende.Das sah aus wie der XBox Controller.
Nice video but the nec tokens are not the problem. Its gpu failure. To anyone with a ylod ps3, don't replace the tokens unless you know for certan they're the issue. The only real way to make these guys reliable is a 40nm Frankenstein
I think it would be helpful if you added a text description of what was happening in the video. Alot of the time I was confused about what product you were using or what parts you were disassembling and for what reason.
I’m thankful that people put in the time and effort to make these videos but yeah when you’re doing a repair you should narrate it. What’s with this mime stuff? Just tell everyone what’s going on.
Fun fact: your info is incorrect, YLOD is a general hardware failure and he should have diagnosed it properly by soldering wires on the syscon RXD and TXD pins and using a UART, if the error code produced by said chip ends with "1002", it indeed is the power going to the RSX not being correct which means the NEC Tokin tantalum caps are the culprit, if the error produced is anything else, like a 3034 which indicates a dead RSX chip, then yes, it isn't the culprit. If the issue is a 3034 then your only solution basically is to get a new chip.
Good afternoon EG restoration, I really liked your work, commitment and dedication, essential for this role, I was just in doubt about the new capacitors, they are new NEC/TOKIN models, with the serial number 0E128 - 1200uF according to what came in the box. board, or, are they tantalum capacitors having the same capacitance? Thank you and a big hug.
Hey love to watch your videos super satisfying. I have a PS2 that won't start should I open it up and try to fix it or send it to get it repaired. I live in florida. Don't know much old console repair shops.
It’s rather easy it may just need a ribbon that runs for $7 and easy to install, or it needs a power supply. Perhaps just dirty. Mine did the same took 20 minutes to fix good luck 🤞
No issues with your work, but would have liked either explaining why you did the replacement soldering.. Not an expert as a viewer so would have liked to known the reason to do that
If you want a full breakdown of how PS3 consoles fail, and the various fixes available, you should look up "Rip Felix". He has a handful of videos explaining what he learned while trying to fix multiple PS3 consoles. Very educational.
He did his job not that good actually. Ripping the capacitors of with a screwdriver is a no go, also normally you check alot of different things like the "syscon" before replacing the nectokens. Also doesn't it look like a xbox controller at the end?? You can't connect a xbox controller with a ps3??
Por que no grabaste cuando enciendes la consola posterior a su reparación? por que un mando de xbox? la verdad me gusto el video pero lamentablemente se daño todo por ese detalle desde mi punto de vista.
It was no ylod, but a rlod and ripping off the nec tokin capacitors was a detrimental error. You dont get replacements for them, there are none and you normally read out errors via the syscon. You inadvertently totalled that backwardscompatible console for the future, because the alternative capacitors are the new problem over short or long time. Consolemurderer!
Were the tokens actually damaged/dfective or was the replacement just part of a general overhaul? (because the Nec Token caps are usually really really good and have generally not much to do with YLOD in the long run, at least not just by themselves)
Lol, those NEC/Tokin caps on the PS3s almost never go bad, so replacing them with zero actual diagnostics to "fix" YLOD is a total fad if you follow the latest developments in the PS3 repair community. This "repair" will not last. In the vast majority of cases YLOD is caused by a dead GPU and the only real way to fix it is by replacing the GPU (now there are ways to use the newer versions, but it is far from trivial).
Look at the likes and dislikes on this video and you will see.. Luckily people understand nowadays, that the easy fixes are not the problem, often. Just remember the times everyone was using a hairdryer for ps3s and the oven for graphixcards fixes. People are finally learning.
Without deliding of the IHS from the RSX and the Cell chip this console won't last very long. It's an early model PS3 from 2006. Just imagine how the thermal paste looks like beneath those IHSs after 17 years. It's usual harder than Chocolate if there's left any at all.
What chocolate are you thinking about? Most chocolate in the US is cut with enough milk and sugar that it melts if you hold it for a minute, or just look at it with an angry face.

I had no idea the OG fat ps3 had sd card slots under that hood. I just tried to pop the front off my PS fat v2 thinking there would be something there and there wasnt LMFAO
I had a fat model PS3 starting in 2009 and around maybe 2014 or 2015 is when I experienced the yellow light of death. I don't have it anymore because I sent it to Playstation Support for a trade in and they sent me a Super Slim model PS3 which I still have to this day.
you can ask an immodest question. How is the chip dump related to the replacement of the processor power harness? After all, it is known for certain that the screen of death on the console is associated with the video chip dump due to overheating. and how did you find out that it was the power harness that was faulty if you did not perform any diagnostics using an oscilloscope or a tester?
Why did you go straight to changing the NEC token capacitors? You should use the correct tools and check the syscon error log for the exact cause. What you did here is most likely only temporary.
I wonder if the heat you applied to the board when replacing the capacitors was enough to reflow to get it to turn on and it seemed like it was the capacitors that fixed the issue. Also, why not delid the CPU/GPU chips and replace the dried up thermal paste underneath? Seems like you went through a lot of trouble to skip the most important step in restoring these?
No annoying sound, no annoying music, it's perfect. Thank you for the great video
Glad you liked it!

That was amazing! Also are you playing a ps3 with Xbox 360 controller lmao
It is not an Xbox 360 controller it is a Rapoo V600 Ergonomic Vibration Shock Controller Gamepad for PC, PS3, and XBOX360, thanks for the visit
What is the exact name of these capacitors and how many watts? As usual, good job 🤩
Tantalum Capacitors "330/470uF - 2.5V/6.3V - Rated, Glad you liked it!
excellent repair. I wanted to ask you if 470uf 2.5v is suitable for this repair?

Como siempre un placer ver estos videos
How did you know just to replace the Nec Tokin caps to get it to work again? Did you think to use syscon to read the errors? Is the condole still working? Cheers
Superb, i always amaze how u fix the broken console 😍
I would love to have my PlayStation3 repaired as well.
It has the same symptoms as the video.
Check out R.I.P. Felix. Get some real information and answers.
Very nice and clean job! What kind of capacitors did you use? Thanks in advance
Turn on sub-titles or read his description.
First, i have to confirm my ps3 vers
I think it would be helpful if you added a text description of what was happening in the video. Alot of the time I was confused about what product you were using or what parts you were disassembling and for what reason.
Not sure if they were on already, but the subtitles add some informative information during the repair.
I’m thankful that people put in the time and effort to make these videos but yeah when you’re doing a repair you should narrate it. What’s with this mime stuff? Just tell everyone what’s going on.
Fun Fact: The NEC/TOKINs aren't the culprit of the issue, and it gets fixed by the heat applied near the chipset
Thank you very much!
*Great Job Dear Restoration EG... Awesome Repair of PlayStation 3 Fat Version... Thanks for Sharing this Great Content!!!* ✌😎

Très belle vidéo 👍vous effectuez les réparations par envoi de la PS3 ylod ?
Bonne journée
That's 110% an Xbox controller
Fun Fact: The PS3's wording uses the same Mata font that was used for Sam Rami's Spider-Man trilogy.
I'm surprised the XDR memory of PS3 is still replaceable to this day even though it's been almost 10 years since PS3 was discontinued
Those changed are capacitors, not the memory banks.
I did not expect him to pull a flathead screwdriver out and start chomping away at the motherboard
Were the tokens actually damaged/dfective or was the replacement just part of a general overhaul? (because the Nec Token caps are usually really really good and have generally not much to do with YLOD in the long run, at least not just by themselves)
actually the oposide. Nec tokins even on old laptops they faill.
Not true. Go do some more research @@NetYarozeGR
Looks like a dk oldies refurbished console
Nice work! Was it necessary also to replace a new cmos 3.3v battery?
По хорошему нужно было ещё скальпировать процессоры и заменить термо интерфейс под их крышками!
New title: I threw 2 ps3 in the desert then clean them.
@@zhurnivuurg i meant unmelted, untouched rock solid black chocolate, which is hard to break and even harder to chew.
good restore👍👍
Thanks 👍for the kind words! Thanks, buddy! Have a great day.
Which capacitors did you replace the NEC ones with?
Thank you for the tutorial!
Im watching this as i am in the process of buying a YLOD ps3 to teach myself how to solder

I seen someone say it plays PS2 games. It also plays PS1 as well. Those are still very much wanted PS3's.
Also the yellow things/orange things you used to replace what exactly is that?
I am actually getting into working on systems and any information helps. Thanks

Oh God that's not the correct way to apply thermal paste 😢 16:58
I had a fat model PS3 starting in 2009 and around maybe 2014 or 2015 is when I experienced the yellow light of death. I don't have it anymore because I sent it to Playstation Support for a trade in and they sent me a Super Slim model PS3 which I still have to this day.
10:09 How many degrees did you use the heat gun?
I think enough to accidentaly "reflow" cell and rsx solderballs by doing this. So in that short time he did that it probably was 450-600'c...
you can ask an immodest question.
Why didn't you remove the factory thermal paste, using a new one from the MasterGel Maker cooler?
I wonder if the heat you applied to the board when replacing the capacitors was enough to reflow to get it to turn on and it seemed like it was the capacitors that fixed the issue. Also, why not delid the CPU/GPU chips and replace the dried up thermal paste underneath? Seems like you went through a lot of trouble to skip the most important step in restoring these?
Do you own i business or something because I’ve been sitting on my ps3 for about 3yrs and would love to be able to play it again.
Gran trabajo como siempre, podrías poner link donde comprar los capacitor es? Gracias
