  • Ray tells a 2 minute story about three of his major musical influences followed by a great song. i don't know if it has been released on any of the albums.
    * * * * *
all my heroes have gone to heaven
where all them saints where flaming shoes
    the junkies and the whores
    all behind them pearly doors
i guess i'm going to go to heaven too
now all my heroes have gone to heaven
where all them righteous joes take to shoveling coal
    the killers and the cons
    the pushers and the johns
with halos, wings and just'a hovering over paths of gold
    so mama don't you cry
    when i'm dead and gone
    'cause jesus loves his sinners
and heaven is a honky tonk
now all my heroes've gone to heaven
the liars and the gamblers and the fools
    the drunkards and the thieves
all wearing silk upon their sleeves
and every gal is like a silver pearl in bloom
    so mama don't you cry
    when i'm dead and gone
    'cause jesus loves his sinners
yes and heaven is a honky tonk
    so mama don't you cry
    when i'm dead and gone
'cause jesus, he loves his sinners
yes and heaven, heaven is a honky tonk...

Jesus loves his sinners, and Ray loves his 7th chords.

So glad to find this again, Thank you! I heard this live on Austin City Limits years ago and it bowled me over...I could not find it listed on any of Ray's albums, which surprised me 'cause it's so unique and amazing. Ray's soft voice teases with emotion...so good!

Damn! been listening to Ray since I heard that guy sing Trouble on American idol from like season 2 or 3. Yet somehow, I never heard this song. God this man is good at what he does

I've got the other version, it's raucous, bluesy & definitely earlier. I could upload it I guess. I love this version though, so delicate & who knew he could talk so well on TV?
