Your horses will need as much hay as they can eat during the colder nights. They eat to make body heat so feeding them as much as you can give them will help them a lot. Also, if you have access to beet pulp in bags at your local farm store, you can take that and put some in a buck and add warm water to it and soak it. Give it to them in the middle of the night when the freezing temps are at their worst. Your horses will love you for it and it will prevent them from not drinking along with keeping their stomachs safe due to the extreme cold.

Great advice above. Don't skimp on the hay in their stable, they need it to eat to keep warm. Before we put up fences they would roam, find shelter and grasses to eat.

My grandfather kept beagles outside, in dog houses. He bedded them down with deep straw on the floor, maybe hay? They naturally pushed up against the door opening, and they stayed snug and warm. You work hard to take good car e of your animals.

If you put straw (not hay) on the ground of the horse shelter it will make it easier to scoop manure & pee with a hay fork. Also will make a warmer place to lay if they decide to & will prevent hoof problems by keeping them from standing in their waste when you clean it once or twice a day. Also could use shavings instead of straw. They won't eat either.

Put a 2x4 around the bottom of the stall and use pine shavings for the horses. They will not eat it and it's easier to clean the manure out.

You can try straw in the horse shelter. If you use hay they will eat it for sure. As another person commented horses do eat to stay warm. Our horses eat off a round bale in the winter. I would definitely feed them more. They should have 1.5 pounds of hay per 100lbs of body weight per day each.
The one thing I’ve learned having horses is…..they eat a ton. I call them hay burners. They are expensive pets that’s for sure but fun!

Straw from things like wheat and bean stalks. Hay is the more scratchy stuff from grass, alfalfa, and the like. Straw more for bedding though some will also eat it. Hay more for food.
Maybe more convenient to move the animal shelters closer to fence, gate, where you feed in cold weather.
We fed and watered in the barn mostly, especially in winter when grazing not available.

Hint….wire the hay bunk to the fence post. The horses will pull it around the pen and eventually destroy it……Pearl says”when I sit…….. you give me my treat or I’ll take it from you.” 😂😂😂🐽🐽🐽when pearl has her babies would they be SEED Pearls or Keshia Pearls?……add a flap made from the trampoline to the top of the pig hut, to block some of the wind……….I would have some sort of wind break near to but not attached to loafing shed……..Horses NEED bedding. Things to remember ……..some types of wood products are harmful or toxic (maple)to horses….when purchasing chips or shavings you can never be sure what is in it. Saw dust is just that DUSTY and can cause lung problems. To bad you didn’t save the by products from your mill. Then you could be sure what was in it. The two main purposes of bedding is warmth and protection from moisture and ammonia. Careful when choosing straw….watch for mold…..again lung problems. Love your site.❤️❤️❤️

When you break up ice on the water buckets, please remove as much ice as you can from the buckets. The ice in the water makes it too cold to drink, it burns their mouths.

what we do is put 2" layer of large flake pine bedding then put a thick layer of straw over the top in the lean to sheds. As to the pawing, get a rubber stall mat and put that down under where they each stand, will prevent them from digging huge holes in the ground. They are easy to clean too, just spray them down (you want the stall mats that are solid, not the ones with drainage holes).

Dutch look I think this is interesting for you .Roughage is the basis for the feeding of every equine - regardless of whether it is a horse or a pony. Your pony needs the technical fibers for numerous important functions as well as for a healthy, functioning body flora. Normally a pony needs about 1.5 kg of hay per 100 kg calves of ideal body weight. For a pony weighing 300 kg, this corresponds to approx. 4.5 kg of hay per day. In addition, it is very important for your pony's gastrointestinal health not to take premature breaks from eating. This is transmitted to the stomach acid, which is constantly being produced. If this is not "buffered" by roughage, it can attack the stomach wall. Serious diseases such as stomach ulcers can be the result.Recreational ponies generally have a low feed requirement. However, this does not mean that their need for vitamins and minerals is also low. In addition to roughage, always feed a high-quality mineral feed to maintain health if you feed little or no concentrate. In general: If you feed your pony less than 0.75 kg of mineralized concentrate per day, the addition of mineral feed is necessary to cover its need for vitamins and minerals.

LOL ......To listen to pigs, they are always Starving. Try a bigger feed trough for Eddie away from the fence, he is still skittish and may feel boxed in (too close for comfort) is why he Paws at the ground while eating.
