The one suggestion I have is if you decide to keep it, no matter the cost, let the professionals do the restoration. If the rust removal isn’t done correctly it will reappear and all your very hard work will be for nought!! Cause believe me it is a very difficult process when you don’t have the correct equipment to do the job right! Just my thoughts

Sand blasting will remove a thin layer of the entire surface including the rust and leave it smooth as well when done professionally

I agree with having a professional at least restore it. If you want to paint it that you can do yourself on the outside. There was a time when I was a kid we had a clawfoot tub in my mom painted it. It lasted a long time. My grandparents had a regular tub that was old and they had that resurfaced white. You can do that it turns out amazing and it lasted many many years. That tub is is deeper than my tub and our tub 38 years old. Going to be fun to see what you end up doing with it and what it looks like. I currently have a friend that has a clawfoot tub and they love it. How I know those are deeper than a lot of regular tubs is I tried to give a little one in the bathroom one and you reach down pretty deep

@Serenity Sealed I like this suggestion! It would give it an elegant feeling. I just can't wrap my brain around all that black. I'd have to put some type of mural or design on it, to lighten it up a bit. Even a gold long-stem rose, or a geo line running around it.

My husband worked at Kohler Company for 45 years making cast iron sinks and bathtubs. When you showed the bottom my husband said your right, it appears to be from 1919. The number 2 could be the shift it was made on and the series of number might be the pattern number. Our granddaughter works for Kohler in the office I’ll have her look in the archives and see what she finds. Considering the cost of new cast iron tubs it would be worth it to refurbish. There are company’s that re-glaze bathtubs. What an awesome find! Kohler still makes claw foot cast iron bathtubs.

That tub is an amazing find! You can sand blast it and refinish the whole thing... re-enamel the interior and paint the exterior.
A brand new tub like that is about $8000 and to refinish an old tub is about $600

This tub reminds me of the the claw foot tub my grandmother had. I would spend hours sitting in her tub whether taking a bath or just sitting it. I loved how comfortable and roomy it was. It was my get away place. Hers was solid white. Oh my gosh though it was so heavy! It felt like it weighed a ton! Maybe someday before Jesus calls me home I will have a chance to have one in a home God has for me.

I had 4 tubs. One 7', two 5', and a 4' children's tub. I used rust remover on the outside, metal primed them, and painted them. I took them to all the different houses I owned. I loved them. Will never use anything else. I got brass fittings, drain and handles. Painted the feet brass, and then coated the feet a clear finish so it appeared to be a polished brass.. Mine dated 1939, 1920, 1928.

I've been bitten 3 different times by a fiddle back. Each time I did what my Grandma told me. Take tobacco & moisten it. Press it tight over the bite using a bandaid. Leave it, to draw out the poison. If the bite looks grayish. Do it again, until skin color looks normal. This works, no skin rot. There is something to be said for the old lost ways. Nice find! 😉

There's no discussion to be had. Regardless of the cost difference in restoring the tub and buying a new one, it's well worth it to keep the old tub and put it in your bathroom. They're cool. They're nice and deep. And with the way they recline, they're very comfy to sit and chill and read a book.

Excellent choice of black outside and claw feet. I believe you would be very happy having the tub completely refinished for your bathroom. I have taken a bath in these when younger they actually have more room than you think. Better than an old #2 metal tub in front of a fireplace or the oven of a cook stove. Great video really enjoyed.

Traditionally they are all white , but i have seen red and black bottoms. I am so excited for you guys. If its not a old tub than its a good replica, mine was from the late 1800's .

CLR cleaner will take a lot of the rust stains out of the inside, but you can buy the diy product to re enamel it. You Can also build them in to a cabinet like fixture or or leave it as is (after sandblasting and painting. Great find. But, you need to be a little more careful with some of the other stuff in the bus. Not to sound rude, but if you didn't know what you had in a claw foot tub, your not going to know what small items you are just tossing around. Keep your eyes open may be old coins in there also. Best of luck!

Boy if I lived close by y'all I would for sure take that RV or bus off your hands and completely clean it up and make it something beautiful. I agree 100% with you! Why trash something that could literally change someone's life?
I was homeless with my 4 children during covid and it was one of the hardest times of my life. I couldn't find a new place bc of the many obstacles.
Wanna know what ultimately happened? I pretty much begged a man that has a trailer to rent it to me. The entire house was trashed and abandoned for years by the past tenants. I went in there and cleaned ..repaired floors and walls .I'm having to pay rent here but me and my kids have a home and its a lovely place now .
I would definitely buy either one just to save money by not paying rent. I'm not afraid of a little hard work.
The claw foot tub was definitely a treasure and 1919 has got to be the year. Congrats guy's!

We have had one that size and they are the most comfortable tub to soak in. My husband is 6'6" and he loved it. Once you have one you want another.
I noticed the shower ring in the bus, those can be expensive, you might want to grab that too.
Definitely have it sand blasted. After it is clean they are ready to paint. Enamel paint works really well and last a very long time. Touch-ups are easy of it does happen to get chipped.
The enamel can be cleaned easily with a non abrasive cleaner, Bon Ami or Vinegar and baking soda are my favorite. Comet and other cleansers with chlorine can erode the enamel.
Once you use one you will know why we who have used them love them. The modern ones just are not the same.

I googled the cost to refurbish a cast iron tub and found it runs from $300 to $600. We had one in our first house and my husband removed and I truly regretted it because it was an awesome tub! I had a tray that went across for my book and wine so I could soak in bubbles to relax. Best part was the cast iron held the warmth from the water. Well worth refurbishing it, but that's only if you like it. In our area they run for about $300 to $500 in the condition your tub is in right now, then people pay to have them refurbished.

I grew up bathing in one of this type tub. Generally, the claw-feet are of different color, I have mostly seen silver and gold feet on them. Setting it in and plumbing it up, can be a pain. The top two holes were for hot and cold water. Inside the tub was a separate handle for each, the mixed on the inside. The hole below the faucet holes was a over flow, and the of course the drain in the bottom. You really don't have to have it sand blasted, you can just get a knotted wire cup brush for your grinder and go to town! II have seen them recessed in floors(But, you don't have a basement or crawl space) I have seen them with a surround, all boxed in not being able to see the plumbing or anything outside of the white of the inside. About anyway you wanna make it. Around here, it's common to see them out i a pasture as a watering trough for livestock. I will say, the design gives you a very relaxing soak as you can lay back and just relax and soak.I remember falling asleep, knees relax and bend and wake up to me blowing bubbles! LOL

You could choose to have it painted in one color, white or a color inside and black on the outside. It definitely is an old tub, I had one but mine had lion claw feet. You can buy the vintage looking faucet handles with a handheld shower. That's what I had with mine along with a suspended shower bar shaped like the tub. Those are very hard to find anymore people think they are junk and want more modern now.

Yeah nice tub, definitely be able to refurbish it. There are companies that do that. Here in Australia it's big business doing these. If your worried about poisonous spiders get some spider bombs just make sure you close the door to keep them from getting out, they work a treat.

So glad to hear you decide to salvaged that tub. They can be recoated you know? I've seen them look like brand new. Maybe you could Google for info. Use those #'s from the tub....a new one is over $1000. @ HD. I'd hate to see it out in the pasture for animals. Although, those piggies of yours might love it.

I'm 72 and when I was growing up we always had a tub like that. It takes me back. Those tubs are collector items today. You can buy the feet on eBay. If the white enamel is damaged you can get it repaired. And of course you can get the cast iron exterior repaired as well. Those tubs were built to last multiple lifetimes. 😳

Whoever would sand blast and paint the outside can try to clean the inside with an acid to get close to new looking. I think it will really need repainted due to the little bit of rust. To touch up it would probably be noticeable. I always wanted one. I know the faucets aren't cheap for that kind of tub. See 8f you can salvage the faucet too and the circle rod for a shower curtain. You can use just as a tub since you'll have a shower stall. It will look great.

Excellent find!!!

My daddy installed our claw foot tub in about 1960. It was really old when we got it but, hey, it was an upgrade from the galvanized washtubs that we were using. I was 5 and I loved to slide down the slanted back end and watch the splash. The tub was so deep it rarely messed up the floor. When I was a teenager we painted the underside dark royal blue and painted the legs metallic gold. We just hand sanded it and it still sits in my mother’s house to this day. (We finally got an indoor toilet in 1970. We thought we were in high cotton. That old outhouse would blow over any time there was high winds so it was great to never worry about losing the toilet again) I grew up on a cotton farm just South of Ft Worth. Hope you have fun with this “find”.

I was looking at a cast iron claw foot tub for my house several years ago and they started at around $1200 and up back then. I think it was Lowes I looked at. So it may be cheaper to restore yours. Can't wait till you decide and if you restore it what it will look like.

I grew up in a house with a claw footed tub! Loved using it because I'd put the water as far as I could, then hold my breath and submerge. The hot water was relaxing for soaking! Our tub was probably a Kohler brand tub as we lived about 20 miles from Kohler. Our house was built in 1900. When my parents finally put a shower in and replaced the tub, they needed a forklift..for two reasons. #1. It was 400 lbs and it was upstairs! Enjoy the tub!

That tub is a treasure and definitely deserves to be refurbished. My son-in-law did one and had the claw feet chromed and it was just beautiful. We had a tub just like it when I was a kid. Of course, I'm old! Lol as for the soaker tub aspect, those tubs are expensive to fill with hot water and people end up not using them because of that. This tub is plenty deep enough to soak in and won't cost an arm and a leg to use. Hugs to everybody and all the critters.

OMG, I grew up on a "gentleman's farm," and we had one in the paddock. I think they took it out of the house when they re-did the bathroom OR it could have been on the bathing porch. The house was 250-300 years old. As kids, we used to fill it with water and swim in it in the summer. That tub brings back memories.
Your claw feet are in better shape than ours were.
Paint it black and the claws silver or antique brass, AND ENJOY IT WHEREVER YOU PUT IT! 🌻👍🌻 What a treasure.
