@@nothing00164 If your general marries a princess agent, and she has any traits in the 'UnchasteWoman' trait line, he will gain this trait with a 100% chance. There is a 3% chance if he ends a turn outside a settlement, and his wife was a princess agent and does not have at least level 2 in 'wifeisnoble' trait line. A 4% chance at end of turn if he has any levels in the trait line 'arse'. So in short, this is very hard to practically prevent.
I find it incredible that a game that came out in 2006 still has such a high number of players so that youtubers are still making video's to explain mechanics
@@thephil5725I too recently found the game again through the Android port. There is also Rome total war out on Android and Empires, set during the colonial period, is coming out soon.
As stated, some retinues are transferrable and some not. By modding you can change it so ALL retinues and ancillaries are transferrable. I did this - much more fun and you can transfer artifacts like the Crown of Thorns, keeping it your whole game.
This in depth information in conjunction with little to no filler is why I subscribe to this channel. Another video idea would be to expand on the corruption system. Late game, I have issues with bad, lazy, and evil generals that have low loyalty. Would be great to see something on how this system works and how I can avoid these.
Generals often get reduced loyalty if they are too far away from your faction leader on the campaign map, and generals don't like being second in command under another general in the same army. They also dislike inactivity, they like winning actual battles. Avoid sitting a general in any settlement with brothels, sitting around gains the lazy traits, being in a city with the brothel line of buildings picks up a whole host of bad traits that have a low chance of happening every single turn, and being far from your faction leader also does it. So if your faction leader is off being glorious and you decide to put some general in a city on the opposite end of your empire with nothing to do and no battles to fight and no way of gaining honor and glory, and is surrounded by criminals, prostitutes, and foreign girls, he's going to pick up TERRIBLE traits. If you park one general in a stack under another, the general with the highest command stat is in charge (I think sometimes the faction leader or heir overrules that but I can't remember if that's true) and whoever is the general that is not in command of his own separate stack has a chance of losing loyalty. If your general thinks your king doesn't trust him, doesn't care about him, just wants him to be some glorified babysitter of a backwater settlement and do nothing, that general would be more likely to be made a prince of some opposing empire by marrying a princess. That seems realistic, and it plays out that way in the actual game, too. Loyalty in general is also based on proximity to the faction leader when it comes to bribery and seduction by princess. The cost or odds are lower/better depending on how low the loyalty of the general in question is, and how far from the leader he is. Disloyalty also breeds disloyalty, so never promote a captain that is already disloyal. It won't get better. You can cover it up by having that general marry your own princess, but... the underlying disloyalty is still there. You gain loyalty rating but the general still has the disloyal traits, he's just slightly more difficult to bribe and immune to seduction by a foreign princess now. It's not good to marry disloyal people into your family, because they're always a risk. But if the other traits are really good maybe it's worth the gamble. I also find that chivalrous behavior helps you avoid picking up disloyalty traits but if someone is already disloyal then the chivalry line is not a cure all.
I'm always finding new traits. Like..."Hates Bandits". Sent a family member out to clear a rebel stack of 2 crossbow militia, autoresolved it, and he lost. Got the trait. "This man never stops talking about how awful bandits are. No positive or negative effects." To the best of my memory. Also, I usually try to marry off my princesses early, but recently used some high charm ladies for diplomacy until they were almost old maids. One high charm Portuguese lady picked up a nasty one, something like "obsessed suitor", ie a stalker. Minus to charm and chances of marriage I believe... But all ended well when she found herself a dysfunctional English boy half her age, who became king of Portugal eventually, as his cougar wife was quite the lady and offset his nuttiness so as to make him not the worst faction leader after all. They had 4 children too, who took after their mom, thank goodness, lol...
Great video!! We need more of these guides for Medieval 2! Like campaign tips, how to start and advance, what to build etc. Manual was lacking information on many things (like for example sack, occupy or exterminate? etc.) What an amazing game it was!
I can tell you from multiple campaigns that characters who gain a special named title like The Crusader can be replaced with a newer title when they gain the max tier of a different trait. It was very common for my Generals who were on Crusade and gained the title Crusader and I would often preform noble actions with them like not killing civilians or building religious buildings would often gain them the titles like Honorable or Chivalrous.
Conquer all settlement (but save 1 settlement) of the faction that you want to be a vassal. Then surround that remaining settlement with your army, probably 2 or 3 armies. Don't siege. Send your Diplomat, then search for the option to make the faction a vassal. Make sure the diplomat you send is an experienced one to increase the odds of success.
What bothers me about retinue in M2TW is at a glance you don't know which one is transferable to other character or not. At least give a sign in the retinue detail...
I know you are only covering the base game, but the epithets became absolutely hilarious in the old Lord Of The Rings mod. Gandalf the Bloody. Aragorn the Profane. Grishnakh the Saint. Also I love how the tavern traits are a Father Ted tribute, being Drink, Girls, Arse, Feck.
Man......I've played this since it came out and had no idea retinue can be transferred! Also, I swear certain factions get the short end of the stick for good traits. The Byzantines I swear are cursed with a high chance of bad traits but maybe it's their buildings. Whereas Italian factions IMO get super traits but again fancy buildings...
I think there is a bit of difference between some of the factions - islamic generals don't get alcoholic traits for instance, so it wouldn't suprise me if it's weighted a bit in other ways.
Most factions have there own unique chances of gaining different traits. Like mentioned Islamic generals can’t be alcoholic. Scottish generals are more likely to pick up traits around swearing and hating the english while English generals are more likely to be ugly and hate the Scottish and French. There’s many more than that, but that’s all I can remember off the top of my head.
I'm wanting to mod my game to have both towns and castles both build the same troop buildings, ... barracks, archery range and stables. Can anyone think of any scripts or triggers that might be affected by me removing the 'city' barracks from the game? (i'm going to use the castle barracks for both castles and cities ... five tiers is just fine, i really don't need seven).
Here are timestamps, as I cannot add chapters yet:

If you write the time stamps first, then write the title, that is adding chapters automatically.

Interesting and useful information.
I really like this feature, brings life to your agents. however some of them have such specific needs, especially the americas dlc ones. good video.

My favorite Retinue is the Ark of the Covenant, which you can just acquire while on crusade.
Moving your character every turn to 100% of his movement points, has high chance of giving him Energetic trait, increasing his movement speed.
