I always tell people that if you’re a tire-spinner or “throttle jockey”, a gummy tire won’t work for you. However if you’re smooth, and you use the clutch to “feel” for traction, then a gummy will work wonders for you.
The colorado desert is not the place for a gummy. However, a gummy is nearly a necessity in other places. Gummy tires can also effectively limit trail damage, since you can get traction instead of simply chainsawing your way up stuff. One other thing, a good quality gummy will have better traction longer, nearly regardless of the tread wear. I run mitas tires and routinely go 50 hrs on a rear tire, so it’s cheaper in the long run to buy a good quality tire, as long as the terrain is appropriate and you have the riding skills to fully exploit the tire you have.
I have smooth inputs and can get close to 30hrs on a JX8, just turn them around at about 15hrs and keep going. I ride with guys (who are slower than me) who will destroy a gummy in 5 hrs while relocating half the dirt in the forest.
My go to tire has been the Tusk Recon since it came out. The thing lasts forever and has great hookup with a plushie nitro mouse on 4 stroke or 2 stroke. Just installed the front recon in a wide and I'm really liking it too, we'll see how it holds up compared to the V35 front I normally run.
I’ll bet you could run that thing another 10 hours and it’d still climb rocks with 1/5th of the knobs left. I was blown away how much traction I had on a rounded off worn out 525
@@highlandcycles Interesting. I ran the VE33S and really liked it. The knobs hade cracks at the base but never lost one riding in Nor Cal. I put a ton of hrs on it at 5-7 psi. We just did a big trip up to Oregon so I thought I would spoon on a new tire for the trip. Yes the JX8. I really didn't notice any area where it worked better and one area that I thought the VE33S felt more predictable ( gravel roads). I was also surprised how much wear I had in 6 days of riding. That said, I am not a fast rider and usually not to hard on tires. Bike is a 21 TE 300i. DT
@@dtrides it is all sooooo dependent on the rider. Fast or not. It’s the way we ride. I know super fast dudes that never wear tires and other ones that Use a new tire every week. Same with slow guys. It’s all about finding the right setup for you.
For hard enduro training I use Tubliss and half of mousse over it. Tried tubes, mousses, Tubliss only, Traxy, but this is the best. Also pros use it. I just cut a bit less than half of inner ring of used mousse away and I make a deep groove in it where the Tubliss can sit in when I set the pressure really low (like 0.2 bar). Had zero flats since (mousse also cushions the hits) and I ride mostly around 0.3 bar. In case of flat, you can ride on on half of the mousse until you fix it with injection. Max grip, adjustable pressure, low cost (Tubliss after 300 hrs like new). Would you try it?
@@highlandcycles Once you have Tubliss installed and mousse cut, I just change tires and switch half mousse from old to new tire. It is much easier than changing tires with any other system i think.
@@DoerOfTheThinkers but then you have tubliss on there. I like running 2 rim locks and mousse balls now. Not sure I’ll mess with that. Currently my equipment isn’t what’s holding me up. Maybe if I ever get good enough to slow wheelie and pivot turn with my feet on the pegs.
@@highlandcycles I just cut with knife a bit less than half of inner ring of used mousse away and I make a deep groove in it where the Tubliss can sit in when I set the pressure really low (like 0.2 bar). It is not hard to do, there are also videos on youtube.
Looking forward to the Talon comparison. My early review got a lot of attention courtesy of thumpertalk, people seem to like the Talon a lot. The JX8 looks like it held up better. However, I'm still running the Tusk after 20 hours and I roast the crap out of it in the desert.
If you were to pick a single tire ( rear ) for best all around tire for CO ( fire roads/OHV trails, light/hard enduro, single track, western slope etc - what tire would you pick? what front tire would you pick with the same question
It would be cool to hear your opinion of the JX8 vs the new Tusk Talon, its a J×8 copy slightly firmer compound, I have run them both, 5 hrs on the Tusk , so far its 90% as good as the JX8, JX8 is better in wet rocks..the wear might be better ....well see
Will you remind me what mousse you run mainly in the JX8 ? Sorry if I missed it in the video. I remember from previous videos that you mainly run the platinum. I'm wondering if you ran it or the soft in the JX8.
I tried one last summer, I really liked the tire except, as you mentioned the wear is a bit rapid for the price tag. I'll probably switch to it for playing wannabe hard Enduro rider over the winter on my 300.
You like riding faster speeds. Gummies are not for you but a hybrid is. VE33 would be the perfect compromise. If you are staying in 1/2 gear mostly JX8 is the choice.
still waiting for you to try a mitas terra force EH, a maxis 7314 or a Michelin stream or even a medium140/80 much better tire for hard enduro. I gave a try to that jx8 and I like the 140s more
i run this tire on my te 300 pro 2024 and i can tell you for now i aint going to run any other tire also running a 120 michelin mousse with 20 1.25 inch holes in it
Ok that makes sense. That's the tire I'm running and I freaking love it. But my soil is much different than your riding. I'll have to check out the JX8 when I'm needing a new tire. Keep the videos coming.
Great video, Rich Larson is a great instructor, I've tried gummies in the past (not IRC) and their next to useless on anything loose and off camber because of the weak carcass. My beast tire so far is the Dunlop MX 53 Mid, wet, or dry on intermediate tracks its awesome. But I'm only a muppet anyway

If you’re in 3rd and without a doubt in 4th, you’re likely killing your gummy.

The VE33 s for me, I use Irc all the time now

You should seriously consider trying a irc ve33 gummy, think you'll like it. Also what happened to make you hate tubless so much????
X2 on the 33, m59 up front ve33 rear 👌
