- Over the last 3-4 months I've been trying out a new way of trying to get thicker hair without resorting to surgery. @sonnywebsterGB put me on to Dr Jonathan Hopkirk at levelsofyou.com/
Big thanks to Peter Attia for letting me use your video without permission. I met you in Austin last year so please don't copywrite strike me haha. Full video is below.

The sentiment behind the video is appreciated and I didn’t expect this to cover all possible bases about the subject, but it does sit oddly when compared to similar videos covering products which promise to be revolutionary and are scrutinised more stringently (eg Athletic Greens, Prime, etc) as it leaves some clear questions which aren’t touched on.
For example, what are the ingredients to this serum - is it just topical Finasteride and Minoxidil? Even if not, what is the evidence put forward to say the ingredients are both safe and effective in addressing the underlying cause of male pattern baldness
Similarly on the efficacy of derma-rolling
Hair loss is a litmus test because I've spent a lot of time researching it, and this video definitely didn't live up to even the scientific consensus. I like James but it does add some question marks to his videos from now on
I’ve been using a mixture of Ylang ylang, rosemary, cedarwood, thyme, lemon, peppermint, hinoki oil, with a jojoba oil base. All via doterra oils or similar, and I would use this mixture for hair and beard growth alike. I use it every 2 days, and every now and then I’ll use a small amount of 0.5% retinol serum prior to applying the oil mixture, retinol has evidence to show that it helps remove an enzyme called sebum, that is often associated with male pattern baldness. Also, there a studies that found that rosemary oil is almost just as effective as minoxidil for improving hair thickness. I’ve been using it for a year, and my barber has noticed significant differences in my scalp tightness (reduced), hair thickness, health and coverage. If anything, I feel it has significantly halted any sort of male pattern baldness from progressing. During this process, I’ve also grown my hair out, with frequent (3-4 weeks) trims to stimulate hair growth and promote blood flow to the scalp.
I’ve been doing this for about a year, it’s relatively low cost compared to some other solutions out there. The most expensive thing is purchasing all the oils, but once you have them, it’s only a a few drops of each to make up the mixture, which lasts around a month or more. Supplementing biotin and collagen is also handy.
Super cocktail ingredients is probably minoxidil which also comes with SIDE EFECTS just like Finasteride.
Wouldn't be surprised if finasteride is also there, which also goes systemic. Minoxidil alone may improve density but won't prevent hairs falling out over time, that's why it is used in combination with finasteride. I mean isn't this ironic - gaining audience by debunking nonsense stuff other people post to then make a video fear mongering a drug that is effective for many many people and recommend "Super cocktail ingredients" instead.. smh
Bryan Johnson gives out this “super cocktail” for free on blueprint. Just visit the website to see if there’s any updates to ingredients as he adjusts supplement and protocols according to data
Neither of these two are in there - regards
@@DrJonathanHopkirk why won't you tell us what's in there then? Surely if it's effective there were trials to demonstrate it's effectiveness, so it can't be a secret. And why James thinks that they are in there? lol this doesn't look good no matter how you look at it
@@rasputintouring9014 Because you could do procedure yourself for a fraction of a cost :) You can do only micro needling without any cock tail and it also help quite a bit and use derma pen or derma stamp not roller
You probably should of included in the video that instead of using the pill versions of Finasteride and Minoxidil, you were just using topical instead which can incur the exact same side effects just with a lesser chance. You also need to included the fact that stopping these treatments means your hair will fall out again and revert to its natural state, sometimes even worse than before. This is a life long commitment if you start.
Also the guy that sold you those treatments for £1500 is a hack. Topical Finasteride and Minoxidil can be purchased easily in the same liquid state from companies online for as little as $200 - $300 AUD for 3 months of treatment. You basically paid 1500 quid for him to roll a $2 dermaroller on you and apply the treatment himself. Any other ingredients in the mixture are probably also snake oil as well as they would have been commercialized in the same way fin / min have. There are entire communities online dedicated to this kinda thing so having a look at them would have been a good idea.
I'm not saying it was a bad video but there was a lot of information and lack of research missing imo
No finasteride or minoxidil were prescribed by me in this protocol just FYI
Agreed with the comment except for the part that you will fall back worse than before. You will simply return to baseline as if you never used it at all.
I'm all for raising awareness of the side effects of finasteride, but to then not even mention the ingredients of this "super cocktail"?
This comes from a place of love as I've been following James since the early days, and i bought his book so he can take some stick. I love how James is becoming the person he used to ridicule 7 years ago. That doctor is exactly the type of person who would be taking about "Ahh yea mate, can you feel that stretch in your oblongata". James now has boxes of needles laying about the place from injecting peptides - i just love it, we all grow and our values change.
Finasteride and Minoxidil isn't for everyone, but it works for most people. Those "nasty side effects" are very rare. Especially if you use topical.
Yeah that’s pretty much the entire point of the video. Not everyone knows they can go topical.
@@JamesSmithPT yeah and it would be topical finasteride which still goes systemic, does have lower chance of side effects, but also is less effective
Finasteride side effects are very rare even with pills. The amount of fearmongering about this drug has become a true sport, mostly by frustrated and fearful balding guys, who never even touched it.
Spot on, everyone needs to watch haircafe. He's a bit mental but his understanding of the hairloss literature puts huberman and attia to shame. Huberman cited an Indian study funded by ALPECIN of all people to say caffiene is equal to minoxidil in efficacy. The methodology of the study was pure BS. I lost a lot of hair because of that man😂
Ill take the drs advice thx tho
Fair play James. You’ll help a lot of folk with this one. Even if they can’t afford this treatment it’s good to hear someone talk about it all.
well il will say this i respected you like many others alot and i know it can be a year or 10 years adds will come so from the bottom of my heart thank you for ignoring doing adds as long as you have , good effort as they say much love you have helped me alot sir James
These are the videos I like, thank you mate
Hairs looking great mate!!
Nice work James!
Have you thought about microneedling and rolling with thousands of microscopic incisions on your scalp? Recipe for a brutal infection?
Buzzed mine off a month ago because it was occupying way to much mental time thinking/worrying about it. I feel like meds/transplants/treatments would just prolong that worry (and i didn't want the possible side effects). Wind and rain bother me much less now IYKYK 🤣
Yeah I’m at the same place, I don’t know why I’m still kidding myself 😂 Thought about a transplant, using drugs and so on, but the more I think about it, I just can’t be bothered/ see the benefit of going through all that, especially all the money I’d waste.
Comments like these make me realise to get over myself and just accept the fate of baldness. Gotta look at the pros. Save time money effort every month for a barbers trip!
Fin and minox cost less that a pound a day and take literally seconds. You spend more time and money showering that you'd need to to keep your hair, but fair play if your happy with it
Once you just say fuck it and shave it off you’ll feel so relieved and wish u did ages ago. As an upshot you will definitely look better no matter what u think
why unlisted
I got scared about the side effects of the med and decided to just microneedle by itself. It might not work but it's not too much of a hassle and maybe it will do something
Yall try red light therapy! I was using it on my face and noticed my hair had gotten way thicker in the front. My last visit to the salon my stylist said my hair was breaking around the edges she can see across the whole front a clear line of breakage (I wear tight ponytails 1/3 of the time). I showed her pics because I noticed the same and it was all new growth. She looked again and throughout my hair and she noticed that I actually had new growth throughout the front and my hairline is comparably more forward and full. It was a wake up call on my fave style (ponytails) pulling my hair out and I have pretty much stopped wearing them.
Thank-you for your public discussion of this.. I have suffered from those side effects as a result of the tablets, so I'm using topical finoxidil now as compromise but it's only slowed my hair loss.. From this video I'll check out the needling as you suggest.
Yeah tablets was a no for me. But rolling was something I was willing to try. Systemic vs local (i think the term is)
Thanks
Hair is like a muscle..! I love James, the "Bants" especially... And feel if this was some other "non-influencer" then they might be getting some stick, but saying that, if it makes ya feel better, more confident as well as brining in a wage then "s'all good cobba..!"
Dutasteride, derma rolling, ketokozazle shampoo and minoxidil over here!! Bosh!!!!!
You'll be set forever with that combination
@@R.W-ju1tg 10 years and still going strong
Why dutasteride over finasteride? Might have to give it a try since fin gave me sides
@@dii3sel007if you got sides from fin you’ll get worse sides from dutasteride. Finasteride suppresses 70% of circling DHT whereas Dutasteride is closer to 90%.
If finasteride is a missile, Dutasteride is a nuke
(This is coming from someone who uses dutasteride)
Can u describe Dutasteride & ketokozazle shampoo?
What the hell is that?
Ive been using minoxidil and a derma roller to grow a beard. I first saw progress after a month and although its been slow, it definately is working. You dont need to buy a fancy overpriced beard growth kit, I bought the derma roller for about £3 and a 6 pack of Kirkland Minoxidil for about £45. I use the derma roller every 3 days and apply 1ml of minoxidil twice a day. I have noticed that sometimes my skin goes red-ish or dry so i always moisturise it after the minoxidil has dried.
What size derma roller do you use? 0.25? 0.5?
I’ve seen others say the vertical stamp, which is more expensive but leaves less chance of a scar is better.
I’ve done 1.5mm for two years. Every 1.5 weeks. No scarring.
Dermastap is definitely more safe. A roller can cause some real wrecking as you're basically digging in your skin.
Tbf I don’t ever think you had a bad head of hair. But understand you may feel self conscious. More power to you 💪🏻
I love you and your hair.

Posting here before it's in the TOP TRENDING section
While this is great, I think most people don't look into finasteride risk mitigation enough. For instance, I too am not willing to accept the risks of oral finasteride, however you can get topical lotion (which I use) that has very little impact on overall DHT levels. I use that in addition to minoxidil and micro needling (I shelled out for the pen so I don't need to do the annoying rolling) and both my head and heard are happy (I don't use finasteride on my beard though). There's an amazing channel called Perfect Hair Health that cuts through a lot of the BS.
I take oral minoxidil and finasteride. I have been taking it in a single compounded tablet for 3-4 yrs now. No noticeable side effects at all and it's super easy. Would recommend, as it's much easier and less time consuming than topical treatments. It also actually works better, but as it goes systemically (throughout the body as opposed to a targeted area), there is a higher chance of side effects. Still relatively uncommon and for me, it has been worth it
You paid $3150 for about $80 to $100 AUD worth of product... you can literally crush up 1mg finasteride and put it with your topical minoxidil in solution provided it's fine enough. Point being, this is a fantastic waste of money. The better recommendation would be to get both from your local chemist with your finasteride prescription and do it yourself. Then adjust the dosing down per your own individual side effects.
Great. I hope youre still developing your vitamin etc formula to help reverse hairloss too.
Most people are fine on finasteride. You probably got monoxidil which are great but will wear off if you don't use finasteride.
What was the cocktail?
Is this exclusive to Aussie for now, or are there places like this in the UK?
I cannot believe that after watching this video, the next UA-cam video is preceded by a hair loss video. Good video
PRP, PRF and EGF is the best option. PRF and PRP use your own blood and EGF use External Growth Factor (IF YOU DONT WANT NEEDLES). Had my hair growing and thinning. After using the PRP method, my existing hair got thicker and healthier and my thinned out areas grew baby hair. Its not instant or a miracle, so start early with this and thennnn do one session after 3 months to give your hair that boost. After my hair got healthier I just went from long hair to medium hair and now its more full. (Medium Hair coz Long Hair causes breakage)
Seriously pick an option and attend a consult session. You can save your hair.
I do take finasteride. I’ve used both the spray and continue to use the pill form for a couple of years now. Luckily I’ve not had one single symptom.
Probably because your not worrying about it and spending hours on hairloss forums, and your testosterone healthy enough that reducing dht doesn't have sexual side effects
I’d have thought with hair transplants you’d need to wait until a significant amount of hair follicles have shrunk? Otherwise, it means if you get treatment too soon for a small section on the head you’d need multiple treatments for the other regions in the future.
Yeah this subject really hits home. I’ve been taking dutasteride for a full year 0.5 mg x2 a week and 1mg oral minoxidil 7x a week. My hair’s regrown back to baseline and at 23 my hair looks like it did when I was 17. Absolutely 0 side effects and me and my girl are going at it 7x a week. Ignore the fear mongering, take the pill every day and move on with your life.
Probably would effect you when you testosterone starts dropping off naturally from 35yrs onwards.
@@jumhed994 you can maintain a lot of your test by naturally continuing to work out
finasteride is the best imo, if you are scared of the potential side effects, think of it like this, you are already experiencing side effects from your dht levels your hair is literally falling off so what do you really risk from lowering your dht levels
microneedling at the same time with minox(which im assuming is in this cocktail) is terrible because it goes systemic.
If you're going to use minox with microneedling, you should wait 24 hours before applying minox.
Openly admits to being a "party boy" and doing loads of recreational drugs. But doesn't want to take something that "might" have an effect on his well being! LOOL still an absolute lad imo
Love the vid editing is great, new editor?
im 34 myself been taken finasteride for a year, id a serious patch at the crown and its probably filled in by 70% it has slowed down but its definitely a great option personally i havent noticed any side affects in saying that im borderline bi polar anyway 😂
Sorry to be that guys but anything peer reviewed on this?
So I watched the whole video and didn't get what he did
I used fin/minox for like 20 years. It eventually seemed to stop being effective though. Now I’m in my 40s I buzz it. I think the meds just postponed it. I’d rather have hair but buzzing is fine
I use that derma roller for my face not my hair lol. Suppose to help with wrinkles, smoothing out face.
I've had the exact same treatment in the UK. Totally would recommend it! Though it's fair to mention that please use a professional!
Minoxidil and finasteride don't need a professional to apply it.
For anyone scared about taking finasteride, ive been using it for over two years with NO side effects. Or if there are side effects I’ve not even noticed. I know I can only speak for myself but most of the fear mongering about finasteride is insane.
Finasteride "side effects" are close to 0 if you take 1mg/3x a week instead of everyday, it keeps up to 90% of effectiveness while dropping the chance to side effects by 50%. I started balding at 18 so I had to learn a lot about treatments to get where I am today. Highly recommend watching "The hairloss Show" on UA-cam underated channel for people who fear finasteride or looking for ways to improve and save hair.
Are you talkin about spray or pills?
@@AnasDar7 pills.
One of the side effects of finasteride is penile fibrosis. You might not notice it until it has manifested, but not sure if it would revert to how it was before after stopping.
Even if you have the worst side effects, they are not permanent.
mate, I legit thought you had a hair transplant, when I saw improvements in your hair video over video.
Did you ever look into Smp?
I got a microneedle but im worried about infection. it says to soak the needles in alcohol but that seems like a fucking bad idea since theyre meant to be jammed into my head?
No need to worry like that. Just pour some alcohol on it whilst rolling it AFTER you've used it and store it properly. Been using mine for months with no issues
The alcohol will dry and dissipate
Bruv, it means alcohol for disinfecting. You’re not pouring a can of JD on the roller
I did a hair transplant and it was the best thing I’ve ever done, don’t listen to these people that make up the same old medication and treatments rebranded in a different packaging tell you that hair transplants are not good
Are you on medications after your transplant?
@@Adam-M1 yes bro you still need to do micro-needling, finasteride , monoxidle to help the transplanted hair grow and to save your native hairs and that will give you optimal results. It’s like anything the more you do the more better the results but yeah a hair transplant in Turkey will change your life bro it’s the best thing ever

The thing that sucks about losing your hair is how much older you seem. Even when you are still in good shape.
FUE is the only answer lads!
And here I've just assumed James cut his own hair. With a pair of scissors that aren't quite sharp enough.
Aight 5:30, I have to apologize to that other geezer in the last video. James said it himself, his ears are getting more battered with BJJ these days, not just from rugby at high school. My bad.
My dilemma is that i have really healthy full hair, i just have a shit frontal region hair line where it basically just the center with no hair on the sides.
Unsure what to do as im not balding in anyway its just a weird hairline.
Transplant and finasteride brutha
You are balding anyway, just in a different pattern.
Comprehensive video on the topic James, well done. Great mix of science plus your personal story. Stay strong my fellow aging men 💪
Ye its rare to keep your hair as a man, im the only one of my friends who still has full head of hair everyone else has lost a little bit or almost to the point they have to shave. But when that is said i also know a few girls that suffer to, they just lose it overall and not in patterne, they might have lost a 1 cen at the templates, but its mostly hair loss everywhere on the head
also James, topical finasteride does go systemic, so those nasty sides you're trying to avoid...you're still subject to it.
You should celebrate a full head of hair by shaving it off. Not because you have to, but you can without it being permanent.
Snake oil, literally
Embrace the bald! It's liberating
thanks James, really appreciate this. just want to add, not just men who affected by this. (& bald men - *SEXY* ) - as a woman, went to treat myself to a haircut for my birthday a few years back (no, actually 2018, more than a few) & the woman said "has anyone talked to you about your baldness" - NO - 🥺😳😱😳🥺(& couldn't afford expensive shampoo & conditioner, doubting make a difference - just walked out) (such much for a little confidence boost & treat). other bigger concerns in my life, yet... - bald men *are SEXY* - bald/ing women 😭😱😭
More options than going to Turley?? YOU MEAN LIKE THE REST OF THE WORLD FOR A HAIR TRANSPLANT MAYBE??
Don't take hair advice from a gymbro channel. Look at hair channels like Matt Dominance, The Hair Transplant Channel or Locklab
Mate, your hair is fine…..mine isn’t ha 😢
With your hair colour, your hair looked fine before
I didn’t know the Diary Of A CEO cut your hair. 🤣
If this treatment means I'd have to look like a FisherPrice man with a mullet..... I'm out.
If drugs fail, just remember old classic solution to mid life crisis when you have money. Buy Porsche.
I’ve been taking propecia for years (finasteride) and had no side effects at all. Apart from hair stopped falling out. All medication has risks of side effects. There is a risk of not waking up from a general anaesthetic. However, we only really consider the side effects here as it is cosmetic or rather a choice to take it. However, there is alot of scare mongering. I say to anyone considering it, try it and stop if you notice any negative changes. I actually watch less and less YT because of all these lifestyle gurus/doctors/influencers spouting all sorts of claims from ‘studies’. What most of these people want more than anything is news and followers.
James is different though. You just get it straight up and then you decide. All the best to you all.
TLDR: You promote snake oil trader that invented "super cocktail" (which is topical minoxidil and finasteride, but he wont tell you that) charges you for 3k and you keep sharing his site ? You are promoting scammer basically.
People should now that they can buy spray with exact same formula and do not need to spend thousand of dollars on it. Cmon James, he has your photo on site as promo even ...
Turkish Hairlines…bravo
Probly wont use it, but thanks. All you can do is share. For those that dont like ir, dont use it.
That episode Attia did about the hoax that is post finasteride syndrome is genuinely shameful. There's absolutely nothing in the extensive hair loss literature to support it's existence. The reason it's peddled by guys like attia and huberman is because they're well aware they've cultivated an audience that would rather hear someone tell them to sun thier arse than give the pharmaceutical industry any credit.
Haven't even watched but gunna guess red light therapy
Not bold but if I was I wouldn't care
bro you are handsome even if you would be black and bald
Why black tho 😅

My mate just pins me with his special sword every night that does the trick 👍
The buzz cut looks good on you. Just sayin’.
All this hair stuff has made me wanna shave it again 😂😂
If you hadn't posted this video i would've never noticed.
I think men need to just own the balding.
Listening to this "doctor" has me skeptic. His office is quack. His speech is quack. Really not trustworthy.
It’s literally the same before and after 😂
I love how you are trying to save your hair, but have a god awful haircut.
Your hair looks the same mate
Just get a hair system. Cheap as chips, you get the hair you want and nobody will care
The mullet needs to go though, leave that for the youngsters. You look to manly and grown for that
Baby comes....Hair goes. Just shave your head and be done with it. You will not regret it. Trust me.
Im hanging on for as long as possible but the moment I have a big forehead its goes
lol Turkish hAirlines
You made me lost respect. As a guy who is 27 years old, let me tell you finasteride and monoxide is only a temporary solution with nasty side effects, althought rare, but who wants to risk that. I used these medicine for almost a decade in pill forms, however, i stopped using it when i also started to experience side effects like losing libdo, sperm count loss and cyst in your breast. Thankfully, all of it went away when i stopped using, however, so did my hairfall started again and even worse than before.
just rub your head very hard twice a day
Sorry but why aren’t you telling us what’s in this ‘cocktail’.. I expected better
He's pinned it now
A man shouldn't care if he's losing his hair, unless it's a medical condition.
This is not living in reality
Stupid take
If someone got literally smooth skin on some parts of the head then...
YOU'RE FOCKED!
