Bought the CD/Blu-ray and both Bright-Side and Dark-Side vinyl versions which all came yesterday from Amazon. Had not heard a single note from the album until I played the (CD) Bright-Side Mix today from front to back today one time. Superb and impressive album on my first hearing. Had not noticed the track order differences from the CD and vinyl versions until you mentioned it. I liked the opening one-two punch of Panopticom into The Court. Playing for Time in the 3 spot seemed to be a very natural spot for a slower ballad and then i/o in the 4 spot seems like a very good choice to me.

Agree with you about Olive Tree having a Phil sound about it. But completely disagree about Playing For Time - which I think is the standout song on the album, and up there among the very finest things he has ever written! Really enjoyed hearing your take though.

Agreed…the horn section totally reminds me of a Phil song
The whole album is a masterpiece

After 3 weeks I stand by PFT as my least favorite song. Great tune indeed, but just a bit too big for the album, and doesn't have the same dark grooves as the rest of the record. IMO. Either way, fantastic album!

Peter did most if not all of this album on his recent tour which I was privileged to witness in October. It was a great concert and my first live concert with Peter Gabriel. You are giving me an incentive to buy the album. Peter is mindful. It is the whole Genesis ethos of which he was obviously a strong part. Your crit of his clever promotion is spot on. Genius to stay in focus for a year.
I agree about 'Stuff'. It struck me as gross, but I just thought that this is Peter. He loves wordplay, no? We are all stuff. LOL (bringing back the '90s is OK with me) 'Love Can Heal' was nice LIVE.

It makes sense that Road To Joy sounds the most 90s to you, because it actually started in 90s. First bits of Road To Joy were done during OVO sessions

Great review! Loved hearing your opinion.
Some of these songs never caught on for me, but my favorites were Panopticom, Olive Tree, and And Still(love that the song was dedicated/about his mother). A few others I liked(such as Love Can Heal, Praying For Time, I/O, and Road To Joy). But the 3 songs I listed first are my favorite.
This is definitely his best album since Us/Secret Worlds Live.

The drop was a cool concept. I admit, I heard 2 songs and thought this was really good but I wanted to wait for the album to come out and I'm so glad I did. I'm not a huge Gabriel fan compared to Phil but I'm so impressed with i/o, he sounds great and I can't believe he didn't release a new album sooner. This was well put together. I have both mixes. I found a lot of the songs were remnants of his styles from previous albums, almost like a culmination of his musical journey over the years. If this is his last album, he has nailed a final opus of achievement. Furthermore, his lyrics are deep and so meaningful, overall this album is solid.

I loved the way songs were slowly dripped. I understand why they did this, the way the music industry works today is that they release singles instead of albums, so I think he wanted to emulate that but at the same time give them a different twist. Each song had their time in the spotlight and gave them a chance to prove how strong they were for us to let them play during the whole month. My favorites were probably I/O and This is Home. Those were the ones that I kept playing and playing. I really love Olive Tree, it has the kind of energy I needed during those days. Overall I'll give i 4 1/2 stars out of 5. I felt there were waaay too many slow songs, would've loved more higher tempo songs.

I'm not really a Peter Gabriel fan , but I stumbled across this album and I am so glad I did.
One of the very best albums to come along in many a year.
Utter brilliance and the musicality is incredible.
He is head and shoulders above many artists of this era.

Some of the songs sound like they're from the 90s because Peter started writing them in the 90s. Also, when "Up" came out he was promising us that "i/o" was only a year away and he had most of the songs written, so I'm not putting a lot of stock in that.

    • @chairthrower
      @chairthrower 8 місяців тому +1

And I think the album is outstanding, but it's hard to compare it to his earlier albums when he was literally one of the first musicians to put certain sounds in songs (gated reverb, Fairlight CMI). But that's a high bar.

I have been a massive PG fan since i was about 8 years old. While most kids in the late 70's were listening to Looney Tunes or Chipmunks Christmas, I was enamoured with Lamb Lies Down and his first two solo albums (then, his third was phenominal). Fast forward 45 years, and it has been a lifelong lesson in patience, certainly - with his sparse schedule, to say the least, and yet he has never wavered from my number 1 spot.. I have always been absolutely relentless with his catalogue, at release. Those songs that i really like, I will never tire of, and I always go about learning it, forwards and backward, inside out. Lyrics, composition, instrumental parts.. at any rate, that was an excellent reaction, or exploration, on your part. As for his choice of a release scheme for I/O, I quite enjoyed it. The entire year, uncovering what he had done. It was a unique twist on most modern singles' prereleases, as you mentioned. I am a rhythmist, and as such, I really gravitate to the songs with a solid rhythm and groove, rather than his somber or vocal balladic pieces. To be honest, (while I am still working it out) I believe that Four Kinds of Horses could be nudging its way into my overall top spot, as in - his entire catalogue! .. possibly. As i said, I'm not quite sure yet. I am of the notion that it is a bit of an enigma, within his catalogue. From the subject matter of the duality and interplay between violence and religion, to its exquisite soundbed, with what he called his 'electric worms', those dancing, bright synths, from the start. And i also like the darker, more somber groove in certain pieces, I always have. I completely agree with you about the accassability of I/O, in general. It sounds as grounded and solid as an album since So. Us was as experimental as he has ever been, aside from maybe the exclusively gated drums on Melt from 1980. Up was a bit of a transition. Darkness was arguably his best album opener since Intruder. My three favorites on I/O are, in order - Four Kinds of Horses, Olive Tree and Road to Joy. Panopticom is a very close fourth. This is Home, I/O, Live and Let Live and The Court are also on my daily playlists. The Court, while being (like Darkness on Up) the one song that has the Genesis era PG storytelling prog composition going on.. is probably my least favorite of these eight. The remaining four, while I respect them, and do listen, occasionally, I can take or leave, generally. Anyway, now that I've written a book.. as a footnote, regarding your footnote. I am smacking my lips in the hopes that he may have another release, in relatively short order. If we can be doing the same thing in '26 or '27 that we did in 2023, I would be completely fine with that.

I think US is far more accessible than I/O, which would make sense given it was the follow up to SO. There are catchy tunes on here, but nothing like Kiss That Frog, Secret World, Digging in the Dirt, or even The Barry Williams Show. The subject matter in I/O is far more serious (as to be expected from a musician who's 73), yet he manages to take the themes of, death, aging, loss, and make them relatable. Having said all that, I loved this album. I loved all things Phil, but I've always loved PG just a smidge more, because I think he takes far more chances, and does what he wants regardless of what others may say. I also have found myself humming Panopticom, but the whole album is on constant replay when I'm out and about, and it makes the perfect background music when I'm writing. As for the year long build up, I don't think anyone could have gotten away with it other than PG. It was a stroke of genius, and I didn't mind it as it gave me something to look forward to. Easily the best album of the year for me.

dropping of the singles bored me and I was not enthusiastic for the album at all. After it's release I listened to it every day, and now I find this album pretty amazing. I'm fond of
So and Us, Up not so much. This one for me is on par with So and Us. I listened to the bright side mix most of the time. After a while when I'm familiar with the album I'm going to compare.
    Great review.

To me, it's not as accessible as Us, given that it gave us Steam, Digging in the Dirt, Secret World, Kiss that Frog and Come Talk to Me. These are all excellent and accessible songs. While I need to listen to the new album some more, so far I don't think any come close to the level of those songs.

Ok, here is how I personally handled the release situation: I listened to the first three songs when they came out. And then I stopped because I wanted some surprises when I saw Peter live in June. After the concert I listened to some of the songs but not all of them. And now I'm just waiting for the full physical album to be laying under my Christmas tree 😊
