Is this your interview? Phil Collins thinks he's 1 of 3 artists successful as solo acts after leaving the band? Stevie Nicks? Dave Grohl? Beyonce? Sheryl Crow? Gimme a break.
@@AliensAnonymous yes it’s my interview. Currently, McCartney, Jackson and Collins are the only three artists to have secured 100 million record sales in a collaborative project and in their solo work.
@@JOHNEDGINTONDOCUMENTARIES And you're sure about Beyonce with those numbers? -- And I liked PC until Su Su Sudio. -- Good work. Cheers
@@AliensAnonymous...Sometimes it’s actually good to listen before jumping in with both feet..👍
@@WolfeTone66 Thanks, , mommy.... He's wrong about Beyonce numbers. Sometimes it's good to be quiet when you don't know what ur talking about.
phil is SO beloved amongst musicans. but haters do hate loudly. NYC has a phil collins day. relax phil. you did it as drummer AND epic front man.
you taught me how to sing with true felling. much thanks and love always.
but the last era of genesis is not a gold star lol. we DID get oversaturated for a decade if you hear too much radio from that era. the pop side esp.
I didn't.
@@davidryan7386 oversaturated? Who forced you to listen to it?
Phil Collins is simply one of the greatest rock musicians and songwriters of all time. An absolute legend.
I am a fan of his work and Genesis but sorry I don’t agree with any of your 3 statements. I would reserve those labels to the likes of Jimmy Page and Paul McCartney and using them for Phil is simply devaluing them.
He really is, the guy is a absolute living legend, stood the test of musical time.
This is sussudio. A great song
@@iansmith9125 sususudio in the hot garbage that put me off PC. I could take his cheesy ballads
@@tonyjedioftheforest1364Seventy nine people do, but don't worry were all sorry for not agreeing with you.
Phil's music continues to age like fine wine and resonates true!
Thank you for providing this interview... Phil has broght up so much good music for decades ! In solidarity with the fighters for peace, love, freedom, justice and truth, we express our feelings with music on our channel. Greetings from Germany, CLUB OF THE UNCENSORED POETS
I grew up during the time when Phil Collins was only known as the drummer and backing vocalist in my favourite band. When Peter Gabriel left Genesis, and Phil stepped up as lead singer my friends and I were all rooting for him, (and the band), to continue with what I still think of as ground-breaking work. How anyone could take offence at one of the best drummers, singers, brilliant arranger/contributor, talented song writer and all-round good guy, is beyond me.
Phil, ozzy osbourne just called to say he loves you!
I can't thank you enough for your incredible positivity injection into the world of music.
I loved it when you worked with john martyn and so many of my other heros.
The body of work you've achived through the years is absolutely incredible!
Thank you for the fantastic vocal range you brought us after the departure of peter!
Phil wrote and performed the sound track to my life. I owe him everything.
I never heard anyone hating on Phil...This guy is beloved to millions of people. and his ballads were masterpieces of romance, emotion, self reflection and human experience.
Don't worry, Phil! What some people say about you shouldn't Matter to you., because you are still one of the best drummers, Composers and singers of the Last 50 years.🎶👍🎉🖖
Great drummer great singer/songwriter I love his music with genesis and as a solo artist
I've always loved Phil Collins, Man!
Incredible drummer
Mr Collins, I m a 59 year old American and have always enjoyed your music!!🎶 you are a super star that I have never heard anything bad about 😊 God bless and thanks for the music 🎵 mt.
For me Phil's music is the soundtrack of my life, love it, love him, especially his incredible singing and drumming with Genesis!
Love this guy and can not imagine anyone would dislike him. He is an icon ❤
Millions of fans love you Phil. Yes. Be proud of everything you've done. You are a true artist and a beautiful man. You have nothing to apologize for. Thanks John.
I'm literally floored by this interview, who could possibly dislike Phil Collins??? The man is an absolute icon and legend! ...we LOVE ❤️ you Phil, screw the stupid haters!!
I am from Zimbabwe. Loved this but was shocked to hear that there are people who have attacked Phil. Me, my brothers and friends loved and still love Phil Collins. We lived on his music. The high light was the album “ But Seriously”… We love you Phil!
Phil, you are great! And theres nothing more to say.
im always listening to Phil... for me his music is timeless. people just don't make music like Phil anymore!
How can anyone hate or even dislike this man? He was the co-writer of ”Supper’s ready”, played drums like nobody else, was the singer of Genesis from 1975 etc etc….For God’s sake!😂🩷
I think it might stem from the fact that much of his 80s work is the epitome of 'dad rock' or 'accountant rock'. It's not particularly cool. Having said that, I think Phil is great and I can't understand any hate.
@@pascalecnto68 I believe the word you were looking for waselevator music or waiting room music, but your point is taken.
Ya but then he went to 'Jesus he loves me' and no more Brand X, no more genius playing..it's not a cause to hate him, but he was a real musical genius. Where did that go? Lost in chasing money, is what most of us old guys think.
I, sure as hell don’t hate him. I fucking love him.
My dad hated him because he moved abroad to pay less tax
Social media has a habit of hate spreading.
It doesn’t really reflect actual life.
I think you’re more beloved and respected than you think.
I have always been a fan of and will always be a fan of Phil Collins... I believe Phil is a genuinely a good person and that shines through everything else..
Seems like a nice guy to me and Against All Odds is a great pop song. Wish I could write something that good.
No one I've ever met even mildly dislikes Phil Collins, nothing but love and admiration
I can't stand his singing, but it's something about growing up hearing him on the radio growing up.
But hate? Never heard of anyone having an actual issue with him. Seems like a great guy
Say what you want, Mr. Collins has put a hell of alot of smiles on peoples faces throughout the years with his music. And I say, bravo good sir.
Might be that for a while he was absolutely everywhere and therefore became an easy target. I can see that opinions about him and his music are much more positive now than in 1992. He was always a great singer and a great drummer. During a few years (76-84 I would say his peak) he was truly awesome, one of a kind. I hope he comes here once in a while and read how much people love him.
Which is essentially what he said. Too many soppy ballads released as singles dominating the airways.
Stray strong Phil. You created so much, and are such a nice guy.
I love the original Genesis music.
And I love the Genesis with Phil Collins as a vocalist.
And I love this great musician's music as a soloist.
Phil Collins has been in my life since I was a ten or so, he inspired me to play the drums (my dad recorded a live show of Clapton and him on drums from tv, and I just wore that tape out). Then when I did my first live shows with a blues band at 16, the guitar player played me Moroccan Roll from Brand X and that was all she wrote... I wish someone could tell Phil that there are probably countless guys and gals like me out there, for whom Phil will always rank among the greats.
I don't know a single person who dislikes Phil. My parents were fans, and I've been a fan for years.
As a drummer and as someone who grew up in the Metro Detroit area I completely respect his musicianship and his love of Motown music!
What city are you from?
Amazing drummer, writer and vocalist. Great musician in general. I'm a death metal, power pop and progressive rock fan. I'm not some casual music fan. People who pretend to hate him do so to be cool, pretty embarrassing.
I love your music, the world has gone mad!
Phil Collin’s music made me happy, and I consider myself a “music lover” unlike the music snobs out there who think they’re music lovers, but really simply dislike anything that is popular. I guarantee that several of Collin’s songs will stand the test of time.
An amazingly talented man. Why would anybody hate him?
"Against all odds" is one of the greatest songs ever written and wonderfully performed.
Phil has been a musical hero of mine for most of my life. The scope of his work and talent is astonishing, balanced by his sincerity and genuine joy in performing and collaborating with others. I always appreciated how he often identifies himself as a drummer first (even in this clip here). I was blown away by the power of his drumming with Brand X; projects like that and his big band work were fascinating - he accomplished so much more as a creative force than the box he was placed in by the success of his mainstream work.
John - as always, these clips are enjoyable and informative. Thank you for sharing them!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and appreciation
@@JOHNEDGINTONDOCUMENTARIESPhillip Collins equals Genesis equals Brand.X equals perfectionism . ENOUGH SAID!❤
Which " big band work?" I'd love to hear that, sounds fun!
@@asciishallreceive3871 It's great! In the late 90s, Phil played big band arrangements of solo and Genesis songs. He doesn't read music and had to memorize the complex parts! Check out Phil's fiery drumming on this version of Los Endos (with Latin breakdown!): ua-cam.com/video/JT5UslpgPUA/v-deo.html
There's also a live album ("A Hot Night In Paris") and a documentary about the project on UA-cam.
@@asciishallreceive3871 Look up Phil Collins Big Band, it was an amazing labor of love instrumental project he did in the late 90s, rearranging his songs and some Genesis classics. It was inspiring to see him take on a musical challenge - he doesn't read music and had to memorize the drum parts to lead the band!
Phil filled a unique niche that no one else can touch. I wish he would produce those songs he has tossed aside and be true to himself and his niche. Haters will hate/trollers will troll. Fans of his music will always be fans. Live for those who love.
Mr.Collins will always be one of the greatest musicians to grace our lives, so glad I was able to see him alone and with Genesis, either way a great human and humbled performer of our times.👍😎
That man sold a "couple of records" due to his immense talent and soul. He ruled the radio in the 80's and pleased millions of people around the world. Amazing singer, songwriter, musician and living legend. God bless Phil Collins and family.
Man, Phil is a freaking legend. One of the best drummers, songwriters, and performers of all time. As for those "soppy ballads", he made the best that have ever been made! Try to listen to Against All Odds without tearing up!
We never hated Phil Collins! He's a legend!
For the drumming with Genesis 1971 to 1977. For the drumming with Brand X, with Dave Greenslade, Robin Lumley's Marscape, this is more than enough for a lifetime and a place in heaven. I dont care for the singing, but that doesn't detract from so much absurdly great drum work. Bless you for that Phil.
Agreed, also his work with Peter Gabriel, Robert Fripp, Brian Eno, Tears for Fears, Howard Jones, and more I’m sure. Pretty impressive really.
I LOVE the music of Phil Collins!!! He was gifted and talented. . . .his music should be played everywhere. Don't care what others say - - YOU DESERVE every bit of praise you received!!!
I worked ;in a record store in Ottawa Onrtario Canada and we could not keep his albums in the store..... he is amazing and i dont know how anyone could hate him
Absolutely love Phil Collins. Love Genesis. Love Peter Gabriel. Each brilliant and beautiful on their own terms. What a waste of energy "hating".
i was a radio announcer for 30 yrs.. and when we were playing GENESIS, and PHIL COLLINS every other hr... i was like GEEEZ.... but, im still thankful, and still listen to anything from ABACAB to ONE MORE NIGHT, etc
I've always liked Phil Collins and Genesis. No Jacket Required is my favorite album.
Phil Collins came up with maybe the most iconic drum fill of all time on "In the Air Tonight". He can definitely be proud of that, especially since he's first and foremost a drummer.
I love Phil Collins...He is a large part of my childhood. I love 95% of his songs. This is the soundtrack of my life!!
No Om Phil you are cool ,people who hate you only don't know how excellent you are as a musician and a person ❤
This guy deserves much more credit. His songs are still great today 😎❤️👍🏻
Phil, you're a true damn talent, and an absolute true artist. you were king for a reason. you're one of my top drummers of all time, in one of my top bands of all time. Saw you guys on your last tour, shed a tear. WE LOVE YOU!!
Phil was everywhere for at least 2 decades. The media knocked him down. Phil was ALWAYS loved by the public, the media should apologize but we know that won’t happen. BIG LOVE to Phil who had more talent in his little finger than most of us x
How could anyone have ANY sort of negative opinion about Phil Collins? How is it that he has to freaking defend ANYTHING??? Hey Phil, I LOVE YOU, BROTHER. You inspired me more than you’ll ever know.
My opinion is that his finest hour was A Trick of the Tail, a great album 👍
One of the greatest musical minds of this century. Period.
I love Phil I'm a drummer and people always say I look like him and that's awesome. I love Take Me Home.... Dude's a legend. And he's got the most famous drum fill (Phill) of all time... when anyone heres it they know who it is...!!!
He is a great writer, percussionist, singer and I imagine many other things! I love the genesis songs!
You will always be loved. Your music... your lyrics... spoke the words I could not speak myself.
He has nothing to apologize for. A great talent
Yeah, that's what is sounds like, he is apologizing for his success. Anyone who knows his work is aware he is much more than those songs. Love his stuff with Genesis, tioo.
Phil is one of the greatest legends musician lyricist drummer singer in Rock history. He doesn't have to prove anything to anyone.
How can anyone hate Phil Collins, the guy is a master of music.
“Take me Home”, one of the coolest video things you ever wrote! 🎉
ah, love him, always (since 1981 anyway) and hoping he is well and able to continue to play music. His music was the back ground to most of my life.
I adore Phil Collins. I get so much joy from his work every day. How can anyone find a problem with musical perfection?
Phil Collins is one of the greatest pop/rock artists of all times, an absolute phenomenal talent.
Phil Collins is awesome. I wish we heard more from him. The 80's and 90's wouldn't have been the same without him.
Always liked phil brilliant drummer, some stand out albums and a good down to earth bloke!
Ive seen this wonderful man 6 times in concert, not recently, I have to admit. What a great guy and an amazing talent. Jealous people can be vicious and Phil has lots that are jealous of his incredible talents and successes.
Never heard any of this!! Phil is one of the greatest drummer/singer/songwriter musicians that has EVER walked this planet!! Are you kidding me??
Phil Collins is the greatest singer, songwriter for me ever. He has provided the soundtrack to my life. He’s one of the few who are super successful who actually is worth the hype.
Unlike KISS and Pearl Jam who absolutely SUCK.
@@1970borntorun absolutely mate. Couldn’t agree with you more. KISS are so overrated. Their songs are basic and boring. Not saying they are terrible but way overrated. Pearl jam are just really dated now and overrated too.
Good stuff, John. Phil is one of the all-time greats.
I love Phil Collins...I can’t imagine why anyone would hate him! All his songs are brilliant!❤
Phil Collins a musical hero. He has invented the gated reverb snare sound that was the foundation of countless tracks in the 80s and definitely is my favourite snare and tom sound of all time.
Plus, he has created THAT drumfill. That alone makes him a legend. Plus, he has a truly unique voice and is a fantastic singer.
The gated snare drum was Hugh Padgam I think.
Always liked Phil Collins. Monster talent and a guy that never took himself too seriously, but took his music seriously. Nice to hear him open up where many others in his industry hide! His sensitivity is admirable!
why would anyone hate someone that's brought so much joy to the people of this world. insanity.
Phil Collins has always been an amazing incredible talent. I still love to hear anything he does.
Legendary in my opinion
He’s one of my favorite singers and songwriters! I’ve never heard anyone say anything negative about him.
Listen to me phil ...whether you went in to acting music or whatever.......... you would always have been a success.....don't put yourself down....you are multi talented I wish I was half the man you are..God bless you
I had no idea people hated Phil Collins. He is awesome, incredible songs and seems like a nice bloke, shame if he is affected by it.
You have absolutely NO reason to defend or justify anything Phil Collins…because you’re PHIL COLLINS!!! Love all your music ❤️
More talent in his little finger than most musicians have in their whole body-fabulous drummer(across a range of genres),good singer, wonderful songwriter, great performer. What a legacy-people just can't stand success & hardwork. And his work with John Martyn on a couple of albums is seldom acknowledged.
Nobody hate you,relax😊
My Phill Collins favourite songs:
-Agains all odds
-in the air tonight
-dont hurry love
Cant hurry love !! Do you remember, is a great song as well.
I always liked his songs. And his voice.I remember when I was a kid in 1991- in a postcomunistic Czechoslovakia - I loved the Genesis single "Jesus he knows me" ( only fo the tune, I didn´understand the lyrics) and others older singles.Actually few years ago I was listening to his late album Testify. And it was very good.
The guy is a fking true legend. His music is food for the soul.
@WiilyDerbbinphlatteNo one cares
Phill we love You like we don’t love any one else you are one of the best singers ever-I can tell you you have a great emotive delivery,,, you are legendary
You're hated because your an extremely talented songwriter and musician..........it's called jealousy. There are many of us who love you and thank you for your contribution to music. 👍👍👍👍👍
His wrote some great songs, and they helped many of us through some tough times.
Your body of work is timeless and will stand the test of time. I think the backlash you've received is a result of the overexposure you had, when you dominated the radio airwaves, TV (Miami Vice) and movie soundtracks. I'm glad the tide is turning for you, you are a legend.
Thanks John
I can feel it in the air tonight. Fucking brilliant writer and artist.
Patrick Bateman:
Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your a**hole. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.
That quote has gotten to be so annoying.
Very nice. Now let’s see Paul Allen’s post
It's just another day in paradise for Phil 😄😄😄
He brought Genesis into the light of day as lead singer from 1977 - 1996. Raising Genesis to the penicle of the bands sales career to the tune of 150 million albums sold (Phil as lead singer) ...His Solo albums sold 100 million (numbers by Song Writers Hall of Fame) Extremely popular in the 80's into the early 90's he was (and is still) loved by millions..So either lots of fans have died...or the World is full of hypocrites..or Love is not as pushy and obnoxious as hate..Lots of Love to ya Phil..You can count me still as 1 big fan, "Buster"! ❤
I love you Phil, always will. You don't have to justify yourself, you are one of the greatest artists in the history of contemporary pop and rock music.
I met Phil in 2013 in an Armani store in NY. We spoke music for about 40 minutes. Here was a delight
Phil has a musical legacy to be proud of. I wouldn't have admitted it, 40 years ago, but even the soppy ballads were pretty damn good.
