Educationally informative, to the point, a no BS approach to a very complicated aspect of car modifying. While there are a ton of websites that have info, its always a good idea to go to a proven company. The info is all the same on all these websites, but some present it in a less confusing manner. As for how complicated wheel shopping can be... you have backspacing, offset, centerline, hubcentric and bolt pattern. I strongly suggest, as Jason did in the video, DO YOUR RESEARCH! Don't copycat, learn, educate yourself, then make a purchase! Sometimes you can go from a stock wheel to a much larger and wider version and be the same weight as stock! Oh yeah, weight is VERY important! Rotational mass effects driveability so keep that in mind when shopping. Adding 30 feet to stopping distance can be deadly!
Thanks for sharing what you have learned. There are a lot of variables when it comes to wheels/tires etc. It can get confusing for sure especially when you are going outside OEM spec's.
I thought about lowering my GTI but I have the Dynamic Chassis Control, not sure if yours does. Anyways, the only set of coil overs that I know works with this system is the Bilstein B16, and the kit itself will set you back around $2800. I’m not doing airbags, not unless I’m driving an old beetle or something less driver oriented.
Mechanic of 25 years here over tightening the lug nuts or lug bolts will not work a rotor what it will do is stripped threads brakes studs or lug bolts stretch them to the point where it damages them to the point where they could Shear off and the rim also refers to the outside perimeter of the rim it’s almost like rim is slang for wheels most people will understand if you say I put a new set of rims on my car they wouldn’t expect that you cut off the old perimeter of each rim and replaced it also on performance based vehicles I would suggest 5 to 10 pounds more of torque on the torque wrench it’s not going to hurt anything and some people like to use anti-seize on the lug threads as well it certainly will help prevent rust and also ensure you get proper torque Auto I know I’m just a mechanic of 25 years
Rims, spokes, and hub are standard terms for bicyclist building up their 'wheels'. Same concept on cars but most just consider them wheels unless they do what you did. Hope the lowering process does not cause issues with that positive offset!
Nice choice! Have the same but went with 9.5 et 35-225/40/18, had to hav that concave look. Next time i will go with a lightweight rim for "GO not SHOW"..keep a ✔on those center caps, they tend to loosen over time & disappear 😭
Got the same set for my mk5 R32 but 19" +45, If you go lower def gonna need to roll your fenders and camber up. The offset you chose is aggressive fitment meaning you need to modify the car to fit without rubbing.
Excellent choice for wheels and tires! I'm a little bias as I have the same wheel and tire combo, but in 20x10 et25. I don't look forward to ceramic coating them! Good luck with your build.
Thank you, this was so helpful! I am looking for new tires and I know nothing about wheel fitment so this was perfect! I learned a lot. I have a 2018 GTI Autobahn. I hate the factory wheels.
I recently installed new wheels on my Mk4 GTI which at the time had the original suspension. All was fine, the wheels were much wider than the stock wheels but they didn't rub. It was when i lowered the car using coilovers i started encountering problems. The front tires would rub against the coilovers when driving, so i wanted to use 5mm spacers to eliminate that problem, it did stop the tires from rubbing, but since 5mm spacers are not hubcentric my wheels weren't properly centered anymore, and i would get a really violent vibration in my steering wheel when driving. Upgraded to 10mm spacers with hubcentric and lunger lug bolts, the wheels are now properly balanced, but i'm afraid the previous spacers (with the vibrations) damaged my ball joints, because i still have a slight vibration when going over 120km/h.
They look fabulous, Jason! And once you drop it they'll be sick. 245! I just ordered tires for my GTI and they said I'd never be able to squeeze bigger than a 235 in there. No rubbing for you? Kudos for doing your own research!
Great video. Very educational and well put together. Your wheels remind me of BBS wheels Golfs use have back in the day. So, yes, they look 👌🏾. Michelins are pricey tho.
Few questions. Why did you decide to go with a tire size that had a smaller diameter than your factory size? Also, do you notice any vibration as a result of not buying a hub centric wheel? Did you take weight into consideration in your search? Comments. Summer tires are fantastic in rain as well. Price of the tire does not always designate the safety of the tire. Tire compound would effect traction more than an additional 10mm of width. Thanks for sharing!
I have euro spec 7.5 gti and I just love the stock wheels (Milton Keynes), but they're 4 years old now and starting to see early signs of corrosion, hoping a simple refurb will fix the issue
Nice choice, the Rotiforms are awesome wheels! But there is a bit of misinformation or just left out for editing. There are plenty of Performance All Season tires that will handle very well, and not all Summer tires will grip well in wet conditions.
Here's what I learned..... Lightweight wheels cause MORE wheel hop at the drah strip than the stock Austins. Im actually slower at the drag strip with my light wheels. Fyi, I don't wheel hop on the street.... i think this is because the strip is so sticky.
3 years late to comment, but the info about the weight of the wheel being on the concentric ring is false. The ring is only to center the wheel on the hub. The weight of the wheel is held onto the hub by the friction force between the wheel and the hub after you've bolted the wheel to the hub (ie, the weight is not on the ring or the bolts once bolted down)
Couple questions - What is the width of the wheel you purchased? Also have you lowered the car yet and are you experiencing any rub with a stock setup? Would love to know before I make the jump to something similar.
I'm subbed over at Fi and Custom Offsets and love their videos. You and Shawn should do some collabs, two great youtube personalities. Alex too! Hell all of them...
