It taking a long time for the big battle to start is such a post modern, today zero attention span comment. This was the 50s where people could wait through hours of stuff: basically liking to watch exotic things and costume drama, usually as in this case subtropical or tropical or some kindof exotic locale and costume, for long periods of time. Nor, is really any minute of the movie wasted. The movie starts with hercules becoming aware the seven against thebes is occuring: eteocles is feuding with polyneices for the theban crown, which just so happens to be hercules' city. promising oedipus their father that he will try to broker a treaty, hercules drinks the waters of forgetfulness, and then is captured by omphale, in a sequence which admittedly has flaws such as why does she happen to have this fountain in the middle of bitoitia near thebes and no one notices, and etc, though asking these questions of myths and fantasy worlds, is somewhat stupid. He's kidnapped by her, only to realise later he has been, espcapes with the help of his friends from the previous adventure, and then goes to fight int he war of the 7 against thebes. the insanity of both brothers is delt with in that they kill eachother in a duel. When the argives decide to attack anyway, hercules leads his people cleansed of their evil king and now nominally under creon, a good guy counsellor dude here, to victory, which is a route of the argivian forces. Also, the middle part with Omphale does seem like a different plot or movie, however, it is not. It is an episode which is like the Amazons kidnapping and drugging them in the first movie and provides an evil queen, although in the real myth, the Iole episode occurs I believe after Hercules leaves the argo in search of Hylas. These were written for people who have some interest in the source material or some interest in this genre of exotic adventure film, like Tarzan or King Solomon's Mines. Like in Haggard's She, the evil queen is a definite staple of these adventures, very often having a relationship with the main usually male protagonist. Understanding the genre and the stories it is based on will help appreciate this and other movies like it.
I wanna forget this movie existed is almost the same as "this is the movie of forgetfulness" which is at the end of the mst3k episode.
Have they "seen" that movie, I'll have to check that out, thanks for the tip!
