The big difference is Mysterium works with 3 players. Deception is minimum 4 (since you can’t have a Cop, and 2 others accusing each other of the murder) and works best with 6-8. Since you need lots of potential confusion for the case to not become obvious.
So if you often play with big groups, get Deception. If not, get Mysterium.

Even though I love social deduction games I've never found Deception that fun. It just feels like there's too many weapons and other info, whereas Mysterium breaks things up by the Person, Location and Weapon which gives a nice sense of progression.
I've never found the voting tokens a problem as it keeps the discussion interesting by showing how strongly people think about each others choices.

Awesome episode. I really liked mysterium when I played it. I loved trying to work out what the ghost meant with their clues. I also quite enjoyed the vote tokens. Deception looks fun with the opportunity to accuse other people/ lie through my teeth about murdering someone.

Played loads of deception murder in hong kong. One thing I have found that its at its best with 5 players plus, preferably 7 with additional roles ie witness, accomplice. However there are two issues if tiles aren't corresponding at all with what murderer have chosen the game is hard for investigator and its frustrating on the group, also if you are playing with people who have some issues between each other ie family members, couples this game will bomb as they will won't look at the clues and will always point the fingers at each other. That's hilarious but kills the game at the same time.

I remember playing as the ghost in Mysterium and all through the game one of the players kept going on about hats So when I eventually got a clue that related to a hat I thought 'Great, he'll get this one easy!', but did he? No. No, he did not. He didn't even think about hats.

I still play Mysterium as it was originally played, without the voting tokens ,as I find the tokens to be a distracting addition to the game and makes it a bit more clunky.

In my opinion you're missing a really great and fun part of the game. My group has tremendous fun to speculate whether someone elses pick is right or wrong. If someone confidently picks a card and everyone is just like "nope! never!" it bursts great energy! Also it helps mitigate the loss feeling when your card is wrong. Sometimes players just say like "yeah, go for this. And if it is wrong, at least it helps us in the endgame". One way or the other something good comes out. I really recommend this and it is way worth the additional token.
But obviously this is group dependent and doesn't fit everyones bill ;-)

They're pretty much the same game. It's all in a matter of taste and thematic flair. And I've not seen Mysterium take longer than 45 minutes. The set up is easy if you have the cards organized

Yeap. Deception is the better game. More engaging for all players.

I'm a boxing fan (odd way to start a comment, I know), and as such I find some matches far more compelling to watch than others. This "Which is Greater?" was like a first-rate fight between two top-level fighters (for me, at least). I also think it finished with both 'fighters' acquitting themselves well -- and I agree with the judges' (narrow) decision. Good show!

i too love mysterium, but i love it,cuz, you can joke about things, like i think the ghost eat some bad food and is having a fever dream, which explains the picture card i got :P. sometimes the ghost even says i am sorry i redraw the cards, they are still bad. oh look my clue is a bunch of witchs flying through the sky, a rundown out side pool and an evil shadow about the attack a bed, how this tells me if the murder took place in the kitchen? i dont know :P its so bad its great. :)

I go with the axe and the plant. As we all know the gardener is always the murderer. xD

I prefer Mysterium’s phases with distinct guesses, compare to Deception where you can start off with 1-2 main suspects and just narrow it down without new challenges.
Mysterium is thematically weird though, giving out multiple possible murderers. Sometimes everything leading up to the finale just feels like BS.
But at least the phases restarts the challenge.
In Deception the first phase is often so revealing that the rest feel underwhelming.
It’s too easy to ignore weak clues in Deception. ”Time of day = noon. Who cares? We already know it’s poisoning!”
Unlike Mysterium where every new clue is thrilling since it could throw off the guess entirely.
From a practical standpoint- playing Deception with many people (as intended) means the cards are too small to read across a large table. This often leads to people targeting whoever is closest (or jumping on bandwagons) cause they can’t see all the cards.

  • @BenRangel

Many Deception games have disappointed me by being too easy, since some weapons are obvious. If the method is ”poison” then you immediately have 1-2 primary suspects and it’s not much fun watching them hoplessly trying to argue ”an umbrella could also be poisoned...”.
The game is praised for having every player ”play the same game”, but I disagree. Some people are safe, some are prime suspects - it’s too easy to just rule someone out entirely.
The hard evidence can make it impossible to get away. Unlike games such as Werewolf, where you can bluff your way out of things.

Mysterium is by far the better game. I found Deception cumbersome and clunky and rather boring compared to Mysterium, which has always been a hit with my game group. Deception is basically Resistance meets Concept, but it doesn't work thematically. It's not enough to just know who the killer is but for some reason the police don't know what killed the victim? And once you use your badge token to make your guess and are wrong, you're pretty much out of the game. This was a complaint made about Mysterium but like Deception, you can assist your fellow players.

    • @CreakingShelves

I find it a very tongue in cheek theme of the police never being able to understand the technical reports from the forensic scientist :p And you can't arrest someone successfully without evidence! In Mysterium it still seems weird that the ghost wastes all that time telling you about everyone who could have killed them instead of just focusing on the one who did. But that's games I guess. It is interesting how much better Deception has gone over with the groups I played these games with. Indeed, I remember enjoying the original Tajemnicze Domostwo significantly more than my recent plays of Mysterium. I'm not sure if that is time, the rules tweaks, or the different groups I played with that changed things.

Two great games but Mysterium is the summer of the golden grater for me. Too many times deception ends within 10 minutes.

@Adam Majewski I appreciate Deception's speed but it's never good if a game ends too abruptly!

I’ve played Mysterium several times and I like the game mechanics, however the story is a bit weird: The ghost communicates to every player a separate set of potential culprit, weapon and place and in the end all but one of them turn about to be just figments of the ghost’s confused mind? Oh, come on, that’s not a good explanation but a very poor way to try to give some meaning to the game mechanic.
Aside from that, Mysterium always was great fun for the reasons you mention.

    • @CreakingShelves
      @CreakingShelves  5 років тому

Indeed lol! Both of these games demand some serious suspension of disbelief. Just talk to the forensic scientist for goodness sake! :P

    • @markusbauer9452
      @markusbauer9452 5 років тому +1

well, imagination is not everyones strength. 🙄
The ghost already communicates in very obscure ways, why is it so hard to imagine that the solution to the crime is also a bit obscure?
Also, our interpretation goes far more into the possibility that all identified culprits have something to do with the murder. Maybe they are accomplices, maybe witnesses, maybe involved in other ways!
