I don't know, dude. When you're using the Switch Axe, and you're smashing a downed monster with sword mode, you latch onto its head and ride it while unloading all of your element into it until a final explosion, it's incredibly satisfying and I turn into a prehistoric ape every time it happens.
@@e4ehco21 sword mode simply does more damage. Even with the charged up Axe you don't deal more damage than normal you just stagger the Monster quicker. Spamming wild slash is only half viable against monsters that trip easily.
Personally I just smack in sword mode on the monster until like 1-2 seconds before it gets up, then I Zero Sum Discharge onto it for max amount of damage on a downed monster, because the end of the Discharge will knock you back quite a bit, even if you let go early. Always go for sword mode for damage pretty much, especially on downed monsters.
Glaive player checking in here, and this has always bothered me. Don’t get me wrong-I was drawn towards the weapon by the appeal of the flying dance, just like everyone else. But there’s so much more to the weapon. People want to complain about its aerial attacks not doing enough damage, but it literally had 2 aerial moves in the base game. Glaive has such a complex and interesting grounded combo tree that can actually deal massive amounts of sustained damage, especially given that the weapon’s range and speed allows it to keep up a near endless onslaught, almost always able to reach the target weak point. The vault is useful for so much more than mashing b (or square, or right click). Vault + aerial evade gives a huge amount of mobility and access to a dodging style unlike any other weapon, since you’re able to go over many otherwise deadly and difficult to avoid attacks. The falling spin was buffed in Iceborne-while it used to cap out at 3 hits on most normal-sized monsters in the base game, the added hitboxes in Iceborne allow it to easily go up to 6. That’s 6 hits of mounting damage, any time, anywhere. It’s not the hardest hitter in terms of mount, but just like its grounded dps, it’s all about keeping up a sustained onslaught. People seem to have this black-and-white mindset when looking at glaive, where you have to either play grounded glaive, which is inferior to longsword, or aerial glaive, which is inferior to, uh... skill. It’s so limiting. The weapon’s potential truly unlocks when you’re able to find a balance between utilizing its different styles together. This is further cemented by the new glaive bomb in Iceborne, which I’m personally super happy about. It gives the option for a damaging aerial finisher in an instance where you don’t need to build mount, and goes straight into your heavy damage grounded finishers (triple slash -> tornado slash). It even goes so far as to set up a mark so you can start scattering kinsect dust for free blast, para, poison, etc. It’s not the highest dps weapon. I’m never going to argue that. But the insect glaive has so much damage, mobility, and utility all at once, all wrapped into a unique technical playstyle not quite like any other weapon. TL;DR: Glaive has good damage and reach on the ground, good mobility and utility in the air. You don’t need to choose one or the other. Use them both.
Thank you I use the aerial combat for big monsters that cause ground blights (Val, Teostra) and try to seamlessly go from doing ground attacks to jumping and tying to mount to trying to break a part to applying my Kinect so I can get a blast prock the only thing that ever makes me stop is stamina or my sharpness
Also, this isn't even mentioning the new Kinsect boost mechanic that buffs your exract duration (if your glaive's boost is Spirit & Strength, I think), blunt Kinsects can be used with Slugger or even w/out skills to ko monsters, sever Kinsects can cut tails in a single combo with partbreaker, AND running Flinch Free 3 with triple extract grants earplugs 3, wind res 3, AND tremor res 3! The utility of the Glaive is rivaled only by Sword and Shield
Thank you so much for articulating this so well! The real magic of the insect glaive lies somewhere in between ground and aerial playstyles. I have over 1k hunts with IG and still learn new ways to use it all the time.
That trick is status for aerial, I use blast and only use my ground attacks when the monster is on the ground, I keep up with all my friends and faint less often.
Lance main here: I too was once ignorant of this weapon, very much so, until I saw a stream of a 15 year lance main...that changed everything for me and I've been playing it ever since. Just like HH mains will also tell you, all weapons are meant to be played aggressively, but this is why Lance is godlike...because you're always going to have the best of both worlds. The key to the weapon IMO are the hop attacks, because you can attack then move WHILE GUARDING and reposition in this beautiful dance of both attack and defense. I'm no speedrunner or anything like that, but back when I mastered the weapon I did get a DPS mod to see if the weapon was really that bad at dmg. Not only was I almost always on top of dmg, but I also did a friendly competition with a buddy who was using a bow, against Nergi, and even if he used the bow wall attack spam a lot in the nergi spawn area, at the end I was still ahead in dmg, because while he had to stop attacking to either regain stamina or just...not die...I never stopped the offence. I know that doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things and dmg lists etc, but for me it was more then enough. I agree that they should have given the weapon more love...more flashy moves...but it's still IMO an amazing weapon. P.s. I highly disagree about the GS being good for beginners and the SnS being bad for them. I think Capcom did it right, ranking the GS as a hard to use weapon, but I've rambled enough.
Derrick Hayden I had to learn the lance when I couldn’t get enough MHW and bough Generations for my 3ds, the one without a 2nd joystick... I tried using my main hammer but couldnt turn to hit the monsters lol so I jumped around all the weapons till I reached the Lance and Gunlance and the hopping mechanic was perfect! I wish I could hop like with my hammer, you can really sneak into the best spots, and as you say, it becomes a dance of death!
I've only used the lance since starting mhw and even now in iceborne. I've played several other mh games and the lance has always been my favorite. Always tanking always in the middle of the action and always dealing damage. If you want more damage bring the right Lance and make sure you're taking advantage of every opportunity to poke. The lance might not have the best dps but it can be very damaging because of its ability to keep you on top (or underneath I guess) of the monster, safe and dealing pretty much constant damage. I don't even use guard or guard up and so far the only thing I haven't been able to solo is behemoth. I haven't gotten all the way through iceborn yet but let's face it. Soloing behemoth without having maxed out overkill equipment is pretty rough and it just feels like it's meant to be a full on multi-player battle. I might have to throw together a guard/guard up build to see I'd it even helps me much but seeing as I've never used it and the lances guard has never been an issue for me I think I'll keep my current builds.
@Derrick Hayden I remember when hearing Gaijin Hunter explain about the evade with the Lance and I was like "WHAT? Shouldn't you block?" lol, then showed me how to play aggressively with the Lance like dancing and stabbing around the monster and only blocking if needed, that moment I understood I had no real clue about the game and started to watch streamers like Canta to learn to play
I mean, it even says on the weapon description: It's a weapon that lets you keep on assaulting. Even in MHW Lances were great and kept up with other weapons just because good lancer could just stay in a fight, and poke away relentlessy. Now, with the guard hop having sideways versions and the clutch counter, lance is in such great place. You get to be more flashier while softening up some spots, move in and reposition with ease. Not to mention the defense boost skill rework means if you end up surviving ALL attacks incase you mistime counter or run out of guard. Now, add in super recovery or "life steal" and you might end up using no pots at all and the only pause in poking is when you need to sharpen
Glaive using is art. Dancing and flying around the monster without taking a single scratch. It is not all about damage, it is about doing it while looking majestic
the start of the viedo straight off triggers good MH players... I´d never reccomend the Great Sword to start with, it´ll more likely frustrate new players if they can´t get a single attack going through!
I remember back in freedom 2, a friend of mine recommended great sword to me as a beginner. It nearly made me quit the game, when i tried to kill a velocidrome with it.
@@HexaDecimus yup I also saw a friend of mine play the great sword and tried it a few times, quickly switched back to the long sword again, later on though the GS became by absolute main weopon and it still is in world!
@@HexaDecimus too real ! I start play monster hunter on PS2 saw a cover and HEY A giant sword and a dragon!? that's cool ! I'll try this game > 30 minute in game later I can't hit a small raptor , I can't hit an annoying mosquito , I can't hit A THING!! it's so frustrated it's a fine weapon but for beginner? I will recommend to stick with SnS to learn the game If you have friend to talk/ask then it's fine whatever you want to use
I currently main Insect Glaive and I feel there is alot of utility that people over look. A lot of people don't know the kinsect follows you when you do the aerial dive attack and will pierce through the monster doing multiple hits along the way. Also you can clutch claw while mid air onto the monster which is useful. I'm running a poison build right now with a blunt damage kinsect so its kind of a hybrid build. Damage is a lot less bursty than other weapons but it can keep the pressure on the monster due to its mobility. On the slower monsters I will spam my kinsect at their legs and sometimes I will get them to trip when they are trying to run away.
I do hope we eventually get elemental airborne as a deco since we currently dont have a MR gear set with it. Most multiplayer groups dont bring a brace deco so I stay in the air with my IG mostly so I don't trip my team (I do well getting the mounts and focusing tails since every sever weapon I see goes for the head)
I avoid insect glaive users, the weapon is great but I have no patience for players that only fly around making the monster move like an idiot and none else able to hit it except for rangers and maybe db. It is hard to find good IG users... Even harder than a LS than doesn't interrupts you.
Same with the hammer. With the ham you have to know both the terrain and monsters attack patterns. With ham there's 4 way of using it. The ground level (you perform your basic moves on level ground), cliff/edge tactic where you basically can do the infinite jump attack combo, the off the wall spinning move (some walls and pillars allow for this move) and finally the sliding spinning move when there's slopes. So an effective ham user has to use the terrain accordingly. That's a lot to learn. Plus you can't block moves like the GS can. I'm going to say HH is the hardest from my experience lol.
Agreed, it's very forgiving because you have very little animation comitment, access to both dodge and block, amazing directional mobility mid-combo, and quick sheathing speed.
@@sensaiko the unsheathed item use feature is so unbelievably overrated. And this is coming from someone who barely touches any other weapon. Considering it takes half a second to sheath, its pointless. Considering you cant sprint while using items if youre unsheathed, its detrimental. If something like the lance or hbg had this ability, itd mean something. As it is, it is the least deservedly praised function of the sns. Now, the backhop on the other hand...
Greatsword is too tricky for me to recommend to newcomers, since they always come in with a hack and slash mindset. Its annoying but it should be dual blades. Still, fantastic video !
If Greatsword were the first weapon I picked up it would have been a big turn off honestly. It's too slow for people that don't know what to expect from monsters.
Well, one thing I partially figured out is to the whole "why" CapCom advertises them as a beginner weapon You can get by with just hacking away at the enemy when you don't really know what you are doing. You may not be doing great, but you'll at least get the monster downed sooner or later. You have both blunt and cut damage - sometimes within the same combo even - which gives you a nice middle ground in terms of damage, while getting some utility blocking and quick use of items. Important here - Items: Not just food and potions: Traps, Slinger Ammo (Flash/Screamer/Dung), Bombs and atk/def buffing items, which are commonly used across the board. Some weapons sheath quickly, correct, but in the midst of battle, even quickly sheathing items might not be fast enough, SnS can more or less guarantee your item goes off. For many people, MHW was the first real Monster Hunter game they ever played and I'm fairly certain they are more used to fast paced hack and slasher games and the likes. Remember that the earlier MH games used to be a crawl in both progression and game pacing, when hunts regularly took a while, if only for all the loading screens in between areas :p
@@nikolasbartell2194 that's the cost of reliability. I'd rather have that over fancy charge blade explosions if all you really do is use one move anyway. The lance has great defense and carried me through the late game as a solo hunter. I would die with almost every other weapon. Give it a chance
@@nikolasbartell2194 that is because most of the youtubers guide out there make its looks like this, also, they need a different mind set to play, since most weapon, the mobility comes with you walking normally, and lance, if you want to be mobile, you basically hop and/or run, and don't walk lances are actually one of the most aggressive, mobile, and quick weapons out there, if you know how to use it. (didn't play ice born yet) and you don't really need any guard skill like people like to say, I attack so much, and so quick with it, that sharpness is annoying for me, I normally sharp my weapon 2 times more than I see other players that plays with me (remember that you don't need to sheath your weapon to sharp in world, so I never see why people see sheath speed of lance a problem, only if you do a lot of mistakes with it and need to heal than it start to be a problem) also, block is reactive, you shouldn't be with your shield up all the time, you block, do a counter if possible, and keep poking, different of other weapons, you NEVER get out of the monster hide, you will be always there, poking like a mad man, they try to run? you will be there to poke it to its death
As a Lance main, I kinda took offence to his belittling of the movement of the weapon. It's true we're slow to an extent and our sheathing time is one of the longest, but that's the point - we don't need to sheath ever! Stick long enough with the lance and instead of hops, you'll be guard advancing towards/away from monsters. Throw on a challenger mantle and counter all the attacks a monster throws at you while maintaining dps on the monster, you'll rack up just the same amount of dps as the "mid-tier" weapons. Precision pokes make for more criticals and breaks part easier. Lance is always the first pick I use when going against a new monster just because of it's adaptability.
I fell in love all over again when the clutch counter was a thing. It's so fucking good that I'm doing triple digits with a single poke and the fact that the monster cant knock you off makes it a bonus and easy to shove them to walls.
Ok, I had to react after watching the IG part...A weapon doing less damage doesn't mean it's stricly inferior. It just means it deals less damage, and damage is not the only way to play MHW. There are so many things IG can do that DB and LS cannot do, like mounts (both DB and LS are on the low end regarding mounts), and it deals good elemental damage/ailments like DB but with higher reach like LS. Now, I'll say that I do understand that damage is important, for part breaks, flinches, and yes, killing. But imho, and that is where I strongly disagree with what seems to be TheGameconomist stance, what I've noticed is that you only need to reach certain damage tresholds to be effective, and it also depends on your individual skill level. This is especially true in multiplayer where the number one cause of failure in a quest is reaching the max number of carts, NOT the time limit. I never, ever had any problems with monsters with the standard Wex+Crit Boost+Master's touch+high affinity, and the rest into defensive skills. And yes, I said high affinity, not 100%. 80+% affinity is comfortable enough for most hunts, and finishing the minute of a hunt on blue sharpness has never gotten me killed (if that ever happens). You can argue that higher damage is also CC, and while it is true, in my experience, you still get more CC with a para weapon than a meta weapon, provided you build enough offense. To sum it up, yes, you CC less through sheer damage, but not that much, and you gain more opportunity window through hard CC. And I'm not even touching the psychological aspect of things, where when I land a para, I enabled a "feel good" moment for all my teamates, moreso than if I were doing 20% more damage. Is it more effective, damage-wise? Dunno, it's really too variable, but I've never heard anyone complaining about a mount or a sleep. On the contrary, people tend to be upset when said windows are wasted, like waiking up a sleeping monster or flashing a mount, even if pausing to set up bombs, or for the mount to succeed is a loss of time. Overall, what I find highly questionable is the push towards more balance in TheGameconomist videos. "But more balance is good!" Not always, if all weapons had the same move speed, the same sheathing speed, the same damage, even, then why have 14 of them? "But some weapons are used only by 1% of the players!" Doesn't necessarily mean they suck or need buffs. As long as you have a portion of the playerbase that enjoys the weapon for what it is, then it doesn't need to drastically change. I never encountered a Lance main that said "ho, if only we had innate Guard or Guard Up". No, they're most likely to tell you "ho, I use Guard up for this fight, but not for this fight, because you can Power Guard that move...I also have that awesome evade build, or this counter build for this monster". On the other hand, what I do hear is people like TheGameconomist that are saying "man, I tried Lance, and it really needs Guard Up, if it had it, I'd maybe (but probably not) use it more". Yes, I"m talking about Perfect Imbalance here, and it's all the more relevant to MHW because : 1/ It's a PVE game. It's not about being the best, it's about reaching a certain goal. You can strive to do it in the most efficient way, and I am in awe when watching speedruns, or even a pure dps run, but you can also enjoy some creative freedom and still reach the goal. 2/ Performance floor for ALL the weapons is satisfying. You could argue that some weapons are stricly superior in specific fields, and that all fields are not equally important and you'd be right. Damage IS king in MHW, that's for sure. But CC is queen, and is not that lower behind, and I could also talk about support and resilience, how they have a place in the game, maybe not prevalent, maybe with a lower ceiling than damage, but a place nonetheless. There are successful speedruns with every single weapon, they are ALL loved, they all have depth thanks to years of developpment, and there is no weapon that is considered "the worse" by the community, despite some vocal opinions. Shield weapons are not designed to block everything. IG is not designed to be Airborne all the time. This is just not what they're meant to be, and implementing these changes would make them more effective, but less complex, and imho interesting to play. Ask for more damage, for numerical adjustment if you want. Core changes should be weighted with a little more caution.
Good points. I would like to add that, for me, the value of insect glaive is being able to freely deal damage to monster while perhaps no one else is able. The aerial attacks can sometimes feel like very cheesy damage to certain monster while they are on an enrage in a group hunt. Being able to get a mount while doing that is icing on the cake. Being able to proc a status effect while doing that is great, too. You're not meant to deal the most damage in air, but sometimes being in air on certain monsters if you know them is actually a safe way to deal damage and then also get the mount. Typically if a monster is enranged I will unleash a series of aerial attacks and land the mount. That's to me what it's for, and the art is picking which enrage it's time for a mount because you only get two. Mixing ground with air attacks can also inflict constant damage where most melee weapons may not be able to. To me, it's a DPS support weapon, not a pure DPS weapon.
As an Insect Glaive main I agree, I'd also like to add, with the addition of clutch claw my options opened up SO MUCH. Even disregarding elemental damage, my DPS has skyrocketed as now when I finish with some sort of combo and I know the monster is going to attack, I can roll out and then clutch claw, do damage, fall, then continue doing damage, I feel like new I'm just constantly doing damage which is great for Para but lds because I'm ALWAYS building up that element. Also I feel the dive bomb attack is underappriciated by a LOT. The landing attack does a pretty decent amount of damage, not to mention a really safe way to land the marker for the insect, not to mention it ALSO combos into the last hits of light attack and heavy, or backspin. Overall I feel like the insect glaive is better than base world.... But still not as glorious as my GU IG.... My sweet sweet Gen ultimate IG... Oh the sweet sweet damage you do...
This comment sums up why I don't really watch Gameeconomist's videos. His push for "perfect balance" makes no sense in a game as complex as MH. Especially when considering it's a co-op game. It's not like Destiny or some other fps crap where the Hunting Horn has to be balanced to fight a Great Sword directly. They both fill different roles, and things like HH and Insect Glaive can (as you put perfectly) do so much more than damage, thus making their lower damage output a mute point to anyone who actually knows the weapon. GameEconomist strikes me as the kinda guy who tries a weapon, doesn't like it's playstyle, and then decides that b/c he didn't like playing with it, it needs changes. Instead of just using other weapons like an intelligent player would. I fucking hate HBG. I tried to learn it, but I couldn't manage all the ammo types and didn't like the way reloads work, or how element ammo works... so I decided not to use it. If I was this guy, I would've used it and decided that they need to let me have a permanent element on the gun, and that the gun should let me reload while moving or something. I just don't like how this guy thinks, it promotes a "meta game" mentality where different playstyles and roles matter less than just having every weapon be able to keep up with the DPS of a great sword.
This is all super accurate. I feel like the AT fights pushed out a kind of toxic-lite DPS focused meta. I've never felt pressured to keep up my personal DPS or switch weapons due to feeling like I'm not contributing in another MH game before. It wasn't until a hunting buddy commented on how well I stick to a monster with an IG that it clicked again that it's a weapon that doesn't care about doing big damage as much as it cares about doing damage as constantly as possible, and heavily rewards stylized/varied play with insane mobility while retaining more or less full damage potential. I'd consider it to be the most flowing of the weapons, and lets me stick to a monster no matter where the fight moves across an arena.
Firing pods from behind your shield on LANCE. is SUPER GOOD. Sheath speed is super slow on lance, and you run faster with your charge ability, not having to sheath the lance at all now unless it's to heal or pop items is amazing to maintain the fight. // Lance main.
As a SnS main, I feel as though he didn't give SnS enough 'justice'. For the other weapons, especially bowguns. He gave them far more 'hype' and love. As a SnS main, I can tell you it's all to satisfying to get the perfect rush down on a monster that's either down or stunned. Seeing those HUGE numbers pop up so damn quickly is beautiful and i've able to beat alot of other users in terms of damage when the safi event was up. Such as when he was talking about how using items as SnS isn't as 'good' as it seems since it already has a fast sheathe time. But that's not only the point. You can literally get RIGHT back into the fight with SnS seeing as you don't need to unsheathe. As well as popping seeds or might pills for that extra bit of damage since I know the pills only last a few seconds on a PR (Perfect rush). And honestly, the 'shield bash' method was getting a bit stale. So with the perfect rush added ANOTHER option to the SnS gameplay that I love. Now I either shield slam, Shield bash, or perfect rush for crazy damage depending on the situation. Even the cl And dodge clutch claw grab is beautiful simply because other weapons CAN be too slow in the middle of a fight to weaken a part. Or you may get hit off right before you see the effect actually come through. With the SnS, there's been alot of times where it happened almost INSTANTLY when I even began the animation after the dodge, which is beautiful on it's own since you can get knocked almost right after, and still have that softened weak point. Although he couldn't have said 'all' of this in his short summary. He could've given SnS, as well as other weapons more love. Though, he did say he didn't spend as much time with him as possible, hence why he gave bowgun more love. But, i feel as though people watching this won't really get to truly appreciate the power and flow of the SnS. While they'll be more tailored to lean towards..well..bowguns. So over all, i'd give his review a 8/10~ Still a good review, if not a bit..bias.
All of this. I only started getting *really* into SnS in Generations (only played until I beat low rank cuz I was bumbed about the lack of g rank) but I mained it for the main portion of World and Iceborne. I switched to Bow for world's endgame and I've switched back to an IG main (4U boi) for Iceborne's endgame. But even so I absolutely adore SnS and it's unmatched utility, ESPECIALLY running support. I and many MH veterans will tell you SnS is the best weapon to start because you can use items easily, sheathe and unsheathe are super quick, and it attacks quick and has a block for emergencies. I couldn't tell you how many times that dinky little shield actually saved me from Nerg's divebomb or Namielle's totally awesome lightning steam nova. The more you play SnS the more you realise how many tools you have at your disposal. I currently run with brute tigrex head. tigrex arms and legs, and blackveil chest and waist to get me free meal 3 and speed eating 3 plus wide range 5 charm. *Nobody on my team has a chance to cart* outside of one shots and item usage is so quick it hardly hurts my damage output. I recommend this set to any SnS main and wide range can easily be swapped for anything you might prefer.
@@ArgenteonYT I'm not going to be a dickhead and tell you what to do with your build but.. I'm a SnS main and i have never(and probably ever) build for Wide Range because lifepowders are 100% enough. the new Safi weapon with max DPS build(The usual peak performance, crit boost, crit eye, agitator, atk boost, weakness exploit) the Perfect Rush would reach over 2k while the falling bash combo would deal over 900 damage. Falling Bash combo + Perfect Rush on a downed monster's weak spot could reach over 3k (i have seen it reached 3600). You can build for max DPS while healing the team with lifepowders. If that's your thing. SNS is the "Jack of all trades, Master of all" after all.
but the move that he mention also got buffed, can cancel sooner and can immediately transition into wild swing combo iirc hahaha. so it is not entirely wrong :v
One thing about the Lance Counter Claw attack: when you mount a monster using it, you have a small invulnerability window that you don't get with any other weapon, which means that you can ALWAYS get your soften hits and flinch shots off, as opposed to how it's possible to get knocked off with other weapons. Something to consider when calling the lance changes weak.
Yeah I'm with You. He gave a lot of criticism for lance's changes telling us that this was his first weapon he "learned". The lance gameplay showed in the background proofed otherwise. I'm not a lance player but even I know that the power of lance is to hit weak sports of the monster with high affinity and crit boost - nothing like this was showed in the video. He complain about long sheathing time but instead doing the rush attack/running attack (like I said I'm not playing lance) he either hop to a monster or sheath the weapon to get to it 🤷
21:54 "not more satisfying to use" excuse me what you stick your glowing weapon into a monsters vital organs and let it explode on the inside while a greatsword just goes BONK
Here’s a tip I found out myself in case other gunlancers haven’t figured out yet, the left trigger triangle + circle (idk what it would be for other consoles but it loads the slinger amp into the wyrmstake) spam the traingle+circle again and it will shove the wyrmstake blast forward, if it connects with a monster it will plant the blast on them. I feel it’s much better than doing the full combo for the sake of landing the wyrmstake blast on a monster that moves around way too much
@Barry indeed it is more of a high commitment move and I can understand the inconvenience lol, but it really feels way better to hang onto the slinger ammo and time it right instead of loading it and hoping you connect a full combo on the more mobile monsters like velkhana nargacuga etc. Otherwise failing a full combo results into having to pick up the slinger ammo dropped from the miss and re loading to try and time it again lol. By no means am I saying do it this way, we all learn our own little play style as we play and I just wanted to throw this out there for those that didnt know in case they too found themselves in a similar boat as I do trying to connect a full wyrmstake combo for the purpose of planting the wyrmstake blast
@@somethingelseentirely8948 I like to think of it as a sort of counter where you load it when they attack and hopefully stab the blaster amp in while they recover.
@@ES21007 that's a really good way to think it, that probably is why theres a guard point lol, I just like the avoid full combo to wyrmstake it, then do it when it stands long enough for the animation, but I'll have to try the guard point counter out, knowing capcom that's probably a mechanic they like to push is guard counters
Hunting horn is actually insane, it's so satisfying now, and i woke up realising that I'm playing it for 35 hours straight in Iceborne It's hella stylish and dope Btw, never played HH before
Kendzo Orfeus you will be beloved by your hunting companions. My hunting partner is a horn main, i’m a charge blade main. He and i are an absolute demolition duo.
I've watched a good bit of your videos, but I clicked off as soon as you said the Great Sword is what you recommend for new players. Sure the inputs are simple, but everything else about it is big brain and requires deep understanding of game mechanics and monster behavior to use properly. Otherwise you just miss most of your attacks or get hit while charging.
He probably meant, that the moveset/ the inputs are simple and it focuses on the core game mechanics rather then throwing different ammo types or switching mechanics at you right from the start. It teaches good habits and thus is a good weapon for beginners imo.
@@gerkirschbaum Agreed. Greatsword isn't best for beginners because it's easy to master, it's good because it pays out well for learning and it's simple mechanics are built around the very most core factors in combat in this game. Timing, positioning and such. I tell people that all the time because greatsword was what I learned to play monster hunter with 12 years ago on the first one lol. Now I play everything but lance and hunting horn is probably my favorite.
Great video! Just wanted to mention that, although this is not a moveset change, the greatsword actually has gotten a surprisingly substantial change that you did not mention. The greatsword's true charged slash received a buff/rework which changes the True Charged Slash to True Charged Slash (Power) if you land the first smaller hit on anything before landing the massive final hit. The regular TCS has a motion value of 233 and the TCS(P) has a motion value of 286. This is actually a massive difference in overall damage and landing the first hit of TCS is now extremely important and should be done everytime (except when doing a wake up attack). Anyways, again, great video. Just wanted to clarify.
(PC Lance Main): I really like the new additions to the lance, and here's why... 1) The guard shot stance is actually really strong tactically (but probably not in terms of speedrunning). The guard shot has a much higher knockback resistance, so with guard 5 you are practically immovable. It is one of the few slinger burst shots that you can aim and fire at will. 2) The counter claw is really neat and has some extra properties over the standard clutch claw. The regular counter-thrust can be canceled into the claw counter, so it's available very quickly or can simply extend your counter window. The counter claw latches you onto the *specific part* of the monster that attacked you, has possibly unlimited reach (i.e. fly across the arena to follow a charging monster), and you actually gain resistance to being knocked off the monster, so you can all but guarantee the weapon attack happens to create that weakpoint. 3) The power guard change is just kind of... fluff. If the guard up activated immediately upon dropping into power guard, I would feel better about it. Having said that, most "unblockable" moves in the game have a pretty long windup so... if you react well, you could probably make solid use of it. 43:50 To hear you say they might as well remove the clutch claw counter made me smh a bit lol
I don't think he meant removing the clutch claw counter, i'm pretty sure he was talking about removing the handicap so that you can use it on non physical attacks
What`s great about this game is, that I have clocked in 150h on record and still need to watch tutorial videos like this one, as if I just started the game 2 hours ago.
Incredibly biased video. The new Lance counter is amazing. SnS is absolutely beginner friendly. Just because it isn't mastered in 3 hunts doesn't mean it's not beginner friendly. And IG has low dmg? All of this misleading info is so baffling...
Even then if you can helicopter before bouncing each time its a very easy 100-200 damage while you're invincible. Bouncing while looking for the time to dive is super fun
I rarely sns but I hear it has amazing dps if you are good with it, especially if you know the repeat combos well and can chain them into the monster well
@@xbroxsubzero1564 lol my biggest problem with sns is the reach, I always misjudge it so I miss half my combos, if it weren't for dual blades spinning slide ability to readjust positioning mid combat I probably would have the same problem with them as well so much easier to spin into the monster than to mid step mid combo the general direction for me personally, too used to the LS GS GL reach possibly, been experimenting with bow and horn hammer off and on and made a spread shot hbg when everyone hyped about the zinogre hbg, indeed I liked it, but my thing is i usually find a weapon that makes the fight go smoother for me, I like dual blades against bazel cuz hes so long you can do a lot of damage just spinning above him while avoiding explosions though you need slants or ledges most times lol. Found a liking to LS against the pickle, stands so tall I need the reach. Even the tiny jhos are fricken huge.
Lobosmaster yeah, perfect rush is the absolute savior of sns. They buffed it and it’s doing too much damage. I’m hitting over 400 damage on each hit of perfect rush, and I’m running healer wide range sns.
I spend most of my time in MHW using Insect Glaive, and honestly I really dont want more emphasis on its arial moves. What I really want to see is more forcus on the kinsect. Maybe they can buff the damage, maybe have the kinsect be more involved with certain combos (maybe an upgrade that lets you use a kinsect like a wedge beetle) I often joke that the #1 thing I want to see in worlds is the ability to fire my kinsect out of my slinger. XD To me the Kinsect is the thing that makes the glaive unique, not the vault. If we want to make it feel less like the other grounded weapons we need to shift some of it's focus to the one thing the other weapons won't ever have.
Grayscale Gaming Yes! Something like the hunter arts from generations, the one where you swing your kinsect into the monster and the attack gives you all the extracts at once
Imagine like a move where you grind the back side of the glaive on the monster spreading the kinsect mark on a straight line then the kinsect just shreds damage throughout the mark gathering the extracts available for the marked parts and the kinsect just casually flies back giving you all those extracts
SnS main here, the biggest thing I can recommend it for is if you’re having trouble deciding between weapons, since it does a bit of everything. It can do good raw damage, but it attacks fast so elemental and ailments are also options. It deals both slash damage to sever tails and the like and blunt damage to KO. You can block with your shield if you aren’t confident you can dodge (granted, not quite as well as the Lance and the like). It has some charge attacks. It can mount well. Does it do any of those things as well as more specialized weapons? Not really, but it can do them all, as is the price of versatility. Mounting specifically I think is something a lot of players don’t value enough. Getting a mount should essentially be a guaranteed knockdown in most situations, which your team can translate into loads of damage and is one of those often forgotten utility benefits some weapons bring. Also, while I agree SnS isn’t the easiest thing to use perfectly, I’d say it’s by far the most forgiving weapon for beginners, and especially early on it’s easy to do “good enough” with the weapon. Its fast attacks make its commitment super low, blocking weapons are great if you aren’t confident in your dodging skills, the fast sheath and fast movement while unsheathed means poor positioning is less punished, using items while unsheathed is a nice bonus. Lastly, and I think this is the most important bit about being a good beginner weapon, you can change your attack direction mid-combo. This is huge. Most weapons need to stop attacking entirely to reposition if the monster moves or they overshoot the monster in the middle of a combo, but the SnS lets you adjust on the fly while staying on the offence.
IIRC, the SnS's Perfect Rush is supposed to be especially good with elemental damage, because it receives improved damage for those. Also, I just can't agree with the statement that the lance has limited mobility, nor that it is a defensive weapon. Between all the hops, Guard Dashes and Charge, it has some of the best repositioning in the game. That directly leads into a relentless sort of playstyle where you spend more time attacking the monster than most other melee weapons.
The Gameconomist makes me sad. He's still saying there is only one optimal combo for Insect Glaive. He doesn't understand that weapon, wich is not cool.
@@moosegooseninja4618 that's my point. With IG in Iceborne you've got different combinations depending on different situations. The downward thrust attack changed things up because it's damage is so high. Where you go from it or how you set the thrust up, is up to you.
Hey TGC: The dive attack for the insect glaive, is the strongest attack you can make with it and it's a very complex upgrade for IG mains. It does very high damage when it lands, your Kinsect pierces through the monster and continues to attack = more damage. And it's not only a good way to reposition while dealing damage as you mentioned. I love your content and watch everything you upload, so please don't hate me, but your IG skills are pretty beta and not good enough to just underestimate that weapon based on it's speed run potential. There is more. For me as a viewer it's always nice to cringe when you play IG because it's a more dynamic/appealing to watch gameplay than Hammer or HBG for example. Either way I appreciate your work!
Bic Bello thank you for actually saying this, I’m tired of people that aren’t experienced with the insect glaive explain how it works and how it should be played
Used to be a GS main back in the day, but when Longsword came out, everything changed. Glad they finally get an Iai with different deployment tactics. Growing up on old samurai movies made me so excited for this day lol
I love lance. It’s actually my favorite because it’s such a safe weapon to use. As far as mobility, I think you forgot to mention LS>Y (dash poke) it’s such a nice move to add to a 3x-poke combo and reposition/adjustment
Wow the insect glaive section is just- No you don’t know what you’re talking about man. The amount of utility and mechanics it forces you to master outscales the low damage it deals. The descending thrust is a blunt damage with a Kinsect pierce follow up, so yeah, it actually deals more damage than you would know. The Kinsect is also a great way to deal more damage, don’t underestimate Weakness Exploit on Kinsect, you clearly don’t know how easy it is to break parts with it. The reason it has such low damage is the same as Dual Blades, both have more strikes to deal than other weapons. Timing, moveset reading and stamina play are the core of insect glaive, which are also the core of the game. If you can learn these skills, you can be untouchable simply of how well you know how to move and manipulate your hitbox. So disappointing.
I still think the IG is very different from other ground weapons because when you get flying monsters that troll you in the air you may as well arial attack them then until they either get knocked down, get mounted or naturally come down. You don’t need to stop doing damage is the point. Also arial is just as good for dodging many attacks as it is for attacking itself. When Velkhana’s ice beam is moving slowly across the screen I can just hover over it and towards him into either a mount or ground combos. The vaulting and arial aspect is good for quickly getting to monsters so that you can ground combo them. You’re never going to be able to do very high damage with arial attacks because not every hit is going to hit the monster. It’s just additional DPS and the option to never have to stop dishing DPS. Also I feel the attack high on an IG. You may not be dishing the biggest numbers, but you’re hotting very fast and average numbers dished out quickly can be better than big numbers dished out slower.
That's how I feel too. Sure, IG may not have the biggest numbers, but it can keep the pressure up more than any other melee weapon. If you know hat you're doing with the IG, the only times you stop attacking is when you renew your Kinsect and sharpen your weapon. The rest is all attack uptime. It has utility and unparalleled mobility. It has _flow._ I think a lot of MH youtubers just don't _get_ the IG. They try it, see the low damage numbers and leave, not staying long enough to realise that the numbers _don't stop coming_ if you do it right.
@TheGameconomist Switch Axe is already perfect and capcom does not need to "expand" any idea around ZSD. The weapon has a ridiculous damage. You put on Rocksteady and if you are even mediocre with it the monster is almost dead within minutes. You don't need any guard moves or dodges, Morphing takes care of that already with ridiculously long morph animations that are enough to pull you out of monster's attack range. Weapon in iceborne seen biggest growth in its potential while only receiving 1 new attack and 2 different animations. From a single ZSD spam style of fighting it grew into having 4 different styles of fighting that use the same build so you can switch your switch axe style of fighting on the fly. It takes for about 30 seconds to trip monster down, any monster and if you know what you want to do and where you have to position yourself then you can basically keep the monster on the ground for and entire fight.
trogus i respect you, but you’re missing out on a lot of fun with every weapon. With that said, my hunting partner is a horn main, i’m a charge blade main. He and i work in tandem SO well.
This is me with Insect Glaive. It took 1.5k hunts for me to even consider other weapons, and it wasn't because I was bored of it. Just out of necessity for hunts. GameEconomist always downplays IG. Watching him play the weapon, despite having 4k hours on this game, shows just how much he knows about using the weapon lol
My easy explanation of CB i wrote in a Reddit post Think of the charge blade as a rule of three. You can charge the phials. Then shield, then blade. It takes three inputs of triangle + circle to use the ultimate move and other combos are done in threes for the most part. You gain three skills from charging the sword(minds eye) charging the shield and hitting a guard point (guard 1) anddd your shield thrust(triangle+circle two times) use impact damage (slugger). In conclusion watch a video but this is how i broke it down to my friend when he switched from bow.
The S&S perfect rush doesn't favour raw builds, it's the opposite. Raw builds work great with the falling shield bash since the shield doesn't do elemental damage, with the perfect rush you mostly do sword strikes. It does nearly the same damage if you don't use an element, but out damages the falling shield bash if you use an element the monster is weak to as long as you got the timing right. Small thing on the Iai spirit smash, it does I-frame the enemy move if you time it right, but it doesn't prevent the damage that move does like foresight slash does. You just don't get knocked over. I think it's an important detail to mention as it might cause a lot of frustration when people cart trough it.
SNS is ridiculous in the right hands. Element and ailment are both incredibly strong on it due to its rapid attack nature. The new rush move is easily the new bread and butter for damage. But the thing most people dont realize or really pay attention to is that this thing can do everything unlike other weapons. You can KO a monster, you can mount the monster without a ledge, you can cut tails, you soften monster parts and drop slinger ammo, and have the option of flinch shot. No other weapon has this amount of versatility. It's currently the best mounting weapon in the game as well. Throw on the Riders charm, and either use the sliding attacks are find a wall run up for the most satisfying and effective wall run attack. Most people dont know about it, but the attack is borderline broken imo just due to the raw amount of mounting damage it's capable of.
CB gang where you at? Though I do mix other weapons in for some fun (Safi for example I tend to be the lone person willing to actually TANK and leave others free to attack so I run a GL build with super recovery, health augment, and recovery speed/up)
It saddens me that ig is practically being forced to be on the ground. Like what is the reason with a new aerial or any aerial move in general just to force you to be on the ground. I know it's purpose is for dodging attacks and so on and so forth but still, aerial moves are so fun to use but if i'm barely doing anything with it whats the point.. They should at the very least try to come up with a way that makes ig unique if they are gonna force us to be on the ground.
A perk of the IG is reliability, those attacks in the air are not the most damaging but you are pretty safe flying through the air. Also you mount a lot of them precious knockdowns for your team
i not agree about IG being forced to be on the ground. yep still 70% of the damage still come from ground combo, but with iceborne new aerial move, for me now IG is a aerial weapon. The new aerial thrust does a good amount of damage, and there's many opportunity you can use it and dodge through the air and thrust down the from above monster. Mostly the monster would be flinched or knocked down because the high damage.... and that felt so good hahaha. especially if you dodge in the air using the 'airboost or something[press X or dodge in the air]' and manage to land the aerial thrust. satisfying xD
I have given up on the IG, I used it all throughout the base game but everyone who seems to know what they are doing shits on it. And it just makes no sense why the devs won't let it be an aerial weapon as it is worse than other ground weapons like LS. I also feel like it has lost so much of what has made it unique since it was introduced back in 4 Ultimate, back then it was of the only weapons that could reliably mount a monster easily but now any weapon can do it just as easily basically.
@@MochiMac17 Who cares what other people think. As a main ham I'd welcome playing with any IG players and combined get a lot of mounts. Every weapon is okay to use in my book. Each have pros and cons. I've played over 1200 hours of MHW and I have no problem playing along side with other weapons. I'm actually trying out different weapons myself to keep things interesting.
Guy says he has 4K hours like it means something. When you spend 4K hours playing HBG and LBG 90% of the time, you don't really qualify to talk about the other 12 weapons imo.
he purposely didnt go in depth because this BEGINNER video is already 40 minutes long and isnt supposed to be a guide. it explains what the weapons do so a new player can make a relatively informed choice
@@aaronapitius4775 He doesn't need to go in depth, he needs to KNOW in depth. All he does is give a poor superficial overviews with huge bias and lack of understanding of many weapons' capabilities. This is awful for beginners.
I suspect that the need for a physical attack in order to do a clutch counter is a technical issue, as there may be issues with determining where on the monster you should wind up afterwards upon countering anything that isn't contact with a body part of the monster, but for direct contact with the monster's body they can just use the same rules as the Clutch Claw and the other claw grab moves.
Charge Blade main over here. To be honest it would be really awesome to have a hunting horn main on the team more because normally when you get a good player who is fantastic with hunting horn, the fight doesn't last that long lol.
Tiffany Keyblades I appreciate you Horny mains. I’m a charge blade main and my hunting partner (really close friend in real life) is a hunting horn main and he and i are a demolition duo.
Fade slash on switch axe is not limited to just transforming the switch axe. Fade slash can be used after almost any non-heavy axe attack. You can also fade slash during the wild axe swing combo if you have slinger ammo. Switch axe is now incredibly mobile if you learn to use fade slash often to reposition and avoid monster attacks. Remember to also use your flinch shots to keep the monster from moving too much.
The new Hunting Horn songs are ok. They’re not too exciting. The problem I see in the HH is the list of melodies with preset songs assigned to each HH. Also, I can’t understand why Capcom did not want to add higher grade affinity songs, as well as combining affinity song with Attack or Defense songs.
the lance counter claw makes sense. when the counter activates you are not shooting out the claw, you are latching the claw onto the part as the attack knocks you away so you reel yourself back in. the slinger burst from behind the shield is useful dependent on the ammo type(i.e. using a thorn pod burst on the monsters head and then continuing to poke it will k.o. the monster)
@@Fantajim1984 Thanks for explaining! The only one I can think of is timing dodge to avoid the roar "stun". I guess it's still different from the jumping dive dodge needed for e.g. Teostra flare?
@@Celis.C you can dodge entire attacks not only the roars, but you gotta learn the timings. The superman jump you described is actually the same thing but it has more I-frames than a normal dodge.
@@Celis.C Correct, dodging a roar is using i-frames. Many attacks can be i-framed by a standard dodge roll (including teostra supernova, fireballs, explosions, slams, tail whips, etc) with notable exceptions being monster charges which have large hitboxes. The panic dive works because it has insane i-frame duration (something like 2-3 seconds where a standard dodge is like 0.15 seconds).
Actually you are also invincible to any attacks when you get knocked down as well. Just stay down don't get up right away. You have about 4 seconds of withstanding anything then you basically get up. Very useful tactic once you learn the monsters moves better. It can save your ass many times.
I guess its quite important to mention that the new powered axe mode makes the Switch Axe one of the best weapons to break parts. I really enjoy the weapon and a lot of other ones too (like DB, Bowguns or Gunlance), but everytime i want to break a part to increase my chances of getting a specific material, the „SwAxe“ is my go-to-weapon :)
Fore the most part I agree with what you said about lance, but your point about counter clutch claw made no sense, if lance was able to counter clutch claw ranged attacks, for example if Rathalos was to shoot a fireball at you from across the zone and you counter clutch claw how would the hunter grab onto the monster, it would make no sense and if they did somehow get it to work it would definitely be way to powerful.
The Lance’s counterclaw move can only counter physical moves because how it works it you basically parry the monster’s blow, hooking the monster with the claw as it passes, it’s a melee claw. You can’t hook on a passing monster if said monster is on the other side of the area blasting fire at you. It would be weird if a counterclaw a Kirin’s lighting bolt and just teleport onto it 20 meters away.
They will never understand what monster hunter truly is. The OP hunter always mess up your hunts. Going for tail cut, they kill, Need a horn, they kill, need wings. They kill. I set my invites to manual.
MHW was my first monster hunter game and I picked the charge blade as my first weapon and ended up using it until HR 50. It took a while for me to figure it out, especially since I didn’t watch any guides, heck, I didn’t even know you could charge the sword until after I beat Zorah for the first time. Now that I’ve played more weapons, I can without a doubt say that it is one of the most fun weapons in the game.
As a gunlance main, I never believed this talk... Until I had to teach my friend about the weapon and he had an information overload in the first 2 min.
Infact it's best for raw attacks while as elemental attacks are better for your Triangle/Y button combos. Also while using O/B you can move and press Triangle/Y to move, reposition, and repeat the raw combo although you can also roll instead of using the move attack combo to keep the dps going but it's up to preference I think. Combos are KEY with the SnS!
@@dandandowntown yes mixing the heavy slash combo with the light thrust combo to keep the flow going for trips or flinchs to open of a falling bash combo rotation and throw in some perfect rush and u got a beautiful run.
You did not mention the fact that SA got buffed A TON. Now it gets a Fade Slash in Axe mode that does quite a lot of damage and it's good por repositioning. Also, when the Axe is powered up, it's easier to break parts, flinch and trip the monsters. One more thing, if you manage to charge the Sword just before the power up, you can do an Elemental Discharge into a Latch with the Clutch Claw and follow up with a Zero Sum Discharge WITHOUT losing sharpness and Sword charge. I would recommend watching Jinx Jinx and Tuna's video on it.
It took me no time at all to figure the charge blade out. I don’t know why everyone considers It so confusing. It’s just resource management. I personally consider the long sword and hunting horn to be much more confusing.
Honestly in iceborne you have more resource management with insect glave between the buffs and the kinsect nourishment. Switch axe is more complex with limited mobility and some gage management.
I always found hammer difficult, funnily enough, and with swax being my first ever weapon (mh3u 😳), it comes naturally. I guess it just depends on the person!
I love what they did with the hammer. Still at the start of the mainquest (pc here) and the average fight consists of about 3 mounts, 3 stuns, 1 knockdown by making the monster run into a wall and about 10 short knockdowns. Admittedly I barely use the big bang anymore. Not enough time unless the monster properly stunned and it also doesn't refresh the vulnerability from the grapple attack. Mostly go brutal big bang into grapple.
When i was new I remember that I didnt get enough chances to land a hit with longsword or even keep my guage at red because I was struggled with monster's movement. My friends who play other weapons very well but they still said to me ''I dont want to bother about predict every single movement so I pass the LS''. I mean LS is surely simple to learn but it maybe not that easy to maximize or utilize its dmg output.
Asking to remove Lance counter attack because it can't react to non-physical attacks is a bit ridiculous, there is nothing wrong with it being tailored to counter physical attacks specifically, and as a matter of fact the counter-clutch claw of the Lance is the most powerful clutching attack in the entire game since the monster can't shake you off, this makes it quite balanced, it literally has Rocksteady mantle effect built into it. You do in fact (as expected from anything resembling Rocksteady) take a bit of damage in the process but that's almost always negligible in return for getting a guaranteed tenderizing attack, or even guaranteed flinch attack if the monster isn't enraged and you quickly move to the monster's head immediately after the clutch counter. Also aerial Insect Glaive is almost always more effective overall versus large slow monsters, Deviljho, Kulve Taroth, Xeno'jiiva, Safi'jiiva and almost all Elder Dragons (many of which have very large wings with weak points in them like Lunastra), for example you can literally avoid 90% of Velkhana's attacks and keep her wings tendered for the whole fight if you use arieal IG + aerial clutch claw consistently. Meanwhile areial IG is far less effective aganist small or fast monsters like Odogaron, Kirin and Rajang.
@@craigfunk3453 But even then how would that work!?, most counters in the game maybe with the exception of Guard Points SAED counter can only counter close range attack effectively, if a monster shoots a fireball at you from 20 meters away how is the Lance counter supposed to work then!? I think it makes sense for it to only counter melee attacks because that guarantees the monster is close enough for the clutch to latch on to it, and it all balances out with the fact that the counter lance clutch claw has Rocksteady built-in.
@@AscendantStoic I'm not saying go insane and allow the counter to work at long range. But if something like Teostra does his blast powder explosion right next to his body you could counter that as it's right next to the target you want to counter. Sure. Most non physical attacks from monster are ranged (and usually outside the clutch claw's reach) but I'm just saying those that are kept close to the monster and thus inside the claw's reach of a monster could be countered
@@craigfunk3453 Fair enough, but that would make it a bit OP since it already has a couple of advantages compared to other counters:- 1-If the counter doesn't trigger it's still a block. 2-It has built-in Rocksteady. 3-Its timing window is very forgiving compared to other counters. 4-When triggered guarantees a tenderizing or a flinch attack if monster isn't enraged.
H7nting horn is mega fun, its hammer with buffs. Its absolutely just a fun time to use, sometimes ill use other weapons if needed but damn the hunting horn is just a good time, very wasy to use to, i would say hh is the best starter weapon.
Bit late but the Claw Block with Lance only works on body attacks because: If you block a tail swipe you hook on the tail. If you block a head attack you hook on the head. Your immune to knockbacks for a short time too. Elemental attacks have nothing to hook on you know.
Fun fact, amping the hammer makes you flinch free while charging. Also they can't hit the head if you spend the entire hunt knocking them into the air.
To those that said use flinch free and stop whining. You are telling me to use a T2 gem that is being used for something else just because you dont know how to space out on the monster. I'm a swag ax user. I know my job is that THICC juicy tail. Hammer/Horn is for the head.
Geez I am good I havent died once since starting iceborne and I just got to new bageljuice mission. I'm just saying swords and db should stick to the tail first and using flinch free is a waste of a skill slot
Achyut Dwivedi Jinx had gone over this. SA with axe mode has the highest potential dps. Even more so in multi with the “swing through ally explosion dmg buff”. DBs win if using true crit and weakness to monster. This all also depends on monster match up and familirity with movesets. SNS is probably one of the easiest to use hard to master weapons with pretty easy to get to high dps but I would rank it 2nd behind dbs and 3rd if SA user is good. Just my opinion though.
@@Azsnas Jinx did that analysis before the SnS buff though. Again, even if SA has high sustainable damage potential, it's not realistic at all. Realistically SnS and DBs are far above SA in speedrun times, with SnS catching up to DBs times even when there aren't many SnS speedrunners. I still believe SnS is the best melee weapon right now without going through the complexity of weapons like CB, GS or LS.

I don't know, dude. When you're using the Switch Axe, and you're smashing a downed monster with sword mode, you latch onto its head and ride it while unloading all of your element into it until a final explosion, it's incredibly satisfying and I turn into a prehistoric ape every time it happens.
If the monster is down use wild slashes in axe mode bc it racks up a huge amount of damage by hitting frequently
Me smaash
@@e4ehco21 sword mode simply does more damage. Even with the charged up Axe you don't deal more damage than normal you just stagger the Monster quicker. Spamming wild slash is only half viable against monsters that trip easily.
@@Smeik2901 I know but wild slash is more fun
Could't agree more, its a fun weapon once u figure out the Kinsect moves and how to get around with it and looks cool to booth :)
Silence, you fool!

As a Lance Main i appreciate this comment
@@maximilianbratschke458 seriously, that's why I'm here
I currently main Insect Glaive and I feel there is alot of utility that people over look.

Close to 2000 hrs. Still love these vids.
Almost 500 hrs
hundreds of thousands? I only have 400 lmao
Great sword is the LAST blademaster weapon I would suggest for new players.
i wouldnt go so far i learned it after db and cb and that was fine. a good moment to pick it up is when you get used to reading monsters
In first 2004 monster hunter game, great sword is the best weapon for new player
Yup you need to know attacks and have patients something new players lack
I would say hbg for starter because it has an sheild
Sword and shield isn't hard to use, it's hard to use well. It's absolutely beginner friendly.
Agreed, it's very forgiving because you have very little animation comitment, access to both dodge and block, amazing directional mobility mid-combo, and quick sheathing speed.
@@myhr2320 not to mentiom being able to use iten unsheated
yeah i think sns and gs as well are beginner friendly in terms of "easy to learn, hard to master"
@@TheDustyMuffinsss we are talking about being beginner friendly, mastermind
Greatsword is too tricky for me to recommend to newcomers, since they always come in with a hack and slash mindset. Its annoying but it should be dual blades.
Still, fantastic video !
Gabriel Mauger and you kinda need some monster knowledge or it can be very frustrating at the start
Yeah, you have to know the monsters moveset, its openings, etc. Great Sword isn't beginner friendly, it's a High Risk High Reward weapon.
If Greatsword were the first weapon I picked up it would have been a big turn off honestly. It's too slow for people that don't know what to expect from monsters.
Yeah my first time playing great sword instantly turned off by the slowness until i learn the bread and butter moves and it is my fav weapon now
Agree. I started out with a GS, hated it for a VERY long time but now I'm a GS main. Literally can't play anything else.
"There isnt a meta for elemental," Laughs in Alatreon...
Laughs in ranged weapon
Really had to force that "joke"
Well, one thing I partially figured out is to the whole "why" CapCom advertises them as a beginner weapon
You can get by with just hacking away at the enemy when you don't really know what you are doing.
*Charge Blade is the manual transmission of the monster hunter weapons.*
This is honestly the most accurate description
Hahahaha yeah pretty much😂
Can confirm. Manual driver and CB main.
Thats too real people cant drive stick shifts
This is the best way I’ve ever seen it described. 👏
Out of all the weapons, the lance is still my comfort weapon for any hunt.
I dont mean no disrespect to your weapon but it looks boringly slow and unpleasant to use
@@nikolasbartell2194 that's the cost of reliability. I'd rather have that over fancy charge blade explosions if all you really do is use one move anyway. The lance has great defense and carried me through the late game as a solo hunter. I would die with almost every other weapon. Give it a chance
Lance main here. (with the guard up) Being able to block everything if timed right gives me a sense of security while poking the bear with my stick.
@@Kromeleon1 ya i can see why some people might use it i just couldn't it after playing with the LS and duel blades I'm used to the super fast attacks
@@nikolasbartell2194 that is because most of the youtubers guide out there make its looks like this, also, they need a different mind set to play, since most weapon, the mobility comes with you walking normally, and lance, if you want to be mobile, you basically hop and/or run, and don't walk
lances are actually one of the most aggressive, mobile, and quick weapons out there, if you know how to use it. (didn't play ice born yet) and you don't really need any guard skill like people like to say, I attack so much, and so quick with it, that sharpness is annoying for me, I normally sharp my weapon 2 times more than I see other players that plays with me (remember that you don't need to sheath your weapon to sharp in world, so I never see why people see sheath speed of lance a problem, only if you do a lot of mistakes with it and need to heal than it start to be a problem)
also, block is reactive, you shouldn't be with your shield up all the time, you block, do a counter if possible, and keep poking, different of other weapons, you NEVER get out of the monster hide, you will be always there, poking like a mad man, they try to run? you will be there to poke it to its death
As a lance main I totally agree that the weapon should get some more love, but I'll still be poking my way through iceborne on pc.
Rain Barrel lance life forever 👌🏻
Rain Barrel u shouldn’t need to build for guard or guard up.....
IppyD as a lance main this is true, we fast af boi
Yes, I"m talking about Perfect Imbalance here, and it's all the more relevant to MHW because :
1/ It's a PVE game.
Insect Glaive - ABA: Always Be Attacking. Thats where the damage comes from. Air dodge stuff and keep going while everyone else is running back in
Firing pods from behind your shield on LANCE. is SUPER GOOD.
Sheath speed is super slow on lance, and you run faster with your charge ability, not having to sheath the lance at all now unless it's to heal or pop items is amazing to maintain the fight.
// Lance main.
The Dual Blades does the best elemental damage together with the bow, It's the fastest to correct position and the damage goes from 900 in 8secs
Even the cl
And dodge clutch claw grab is beautiful simply because other weapons CAN be too slow in the middle of a fight to weaken a part.
He said from the start that it was his least played weapon
Agreed, and it's funny how many people still didn't know how crazy the perfect rush can be. I have seen it reached over 2700 total.

@@somethingelseentirely8948
At least the slinger load is a guard point so you're not completely vulnerable.
ES21007 I forgot that all together lol I did notice that but it slipped my mind to mention it
@@somethingelseentirely8948
I like to think of it as a sort of counter where you load it when they attack and hopefully stab the blaster amp in while they recover.

Never ever any lance love. Such a great weapon
What the Heavy Bowgun lacks in mobility, it makes up for in Dakka. This post brought to you by the Ork Gang.
Mhgen player here, aerial gs is godly
Especially in Iceborne. Monsters move so much more and are too aggressive for inexperienced GS users
@@jiggaman198 you underestimate mega dash juice
Yeah, especially if you team up with your kinsect and let it attack wounded weakspots. The glaive is incredible strong in iceborne.
Even then if you can helicopter before bouncing each time its a very easy 100-200 damage while you're invincible. Bouncing while looking for the time to dive is super fun
One other thing to note for the lance is that while in slinger guard you are practically immovable when blocking incoming attacks
The Perfect rush of sword and shield is very powerful. The damage is insane if you are doing it right. Sns is now a top tier weapon.
SnS is and always will be the God Weapon!

@stoneedragon sorry to be the one to say this but yes, you need iceborne to use it
I spend most of my time in MHW using Insect Glaive, and honestly I really dont want more emphasis on its arial moves. XD
To me the Kinsect is the thing that makes the glaive unique, not the vault.
@@fahimrahman7675 Ooooh! Yeah! I forgot about those! The hunter arts would be awesome!
Atleast the Nosedive sends it out now
Imagine like a move where you grind the back side of the glaive on the monster spreading the kinsect mark on a straight line then the kinsect just shreds damage throughout the mark gathering the extracts available for the marked parts and the kinsect just casually flies back giving you all those extracts
Gunlance player here...I can agree that gunlance IS a complicated weapon...but when you get the hang of it it is very useful in taking down monsters
Dual blades repositioning:
The Gameconomist makes me sad. He's still saying there is only one optimal combo for Insect Glaive. He doesn't understand that weapon, wich is not cool.
What do you mean? What other good combo is there?
@@moosegooseninja4618 that's my point. With IG in Iceborne you've got different combinations depending on different situations. The downward thrust attack changed things up because it's damage is so high. Where you go from it or how you set the thrust up, is up to you.
@Michael Woodthorpe Damage efficency

It has _flow._
I think a lot of MH youtubers just don't _get_ the IG. They try it, see the low damage numbers and leave, not staying long enough to realise that the numbers _don't stop coming_ if you do it right.
I made in IG build specifically to fight Velkhana (massive ice res+Fire Kinsect that procs blast) and never carted against it. I love it.

GameEconomist always downplays IG. Watching him play the weapon, despite having 4k hours on this game, shows just how much he knows about using the weapon lol
My easy explanation of CB i wrote in a Reddit post
Think of the charge blade as a rule of three.
I remember that i really got into switchaxe because in your stream, you were beating the ever loving F out of a Leshen and i just really enjoyed that.
Can't wait to play Iceborne!! I think I'll stick to Gunlance since I obsessed with it when I picked up World. Hadn't even touched it before.

Also, I can’t understand why Capcom did not want to add higher grade affinity songs, as well as combining affinity song with Attack or Defense songs.
the lance counter claw makes sense. when the counter activates you are not shooting out the claw, you are latching the claw onto the part as the attack knocks you away so you reel yourself back in. the slinger burst from behind the shield is useful dependent on the ammo type(i.e. using a thorn pod burst on the monsters head and then continuing to poke it will k.o. the monster)
insect glaive may not be the best but its so damn fun to use still :D
Just found your channel, great guide, wish you tube suggested your guide sooner cause this is one of best showcase for all weapons I've found so far.
Genuine question: what are eye-frames, or i-frames?
invincibility frames, quite common in video games. It's basically a short time span where you are complete immune to attacks when you dodge normally.
Power axe mode also increases axe mode's tripping ability. Stack partbreaker and watch monster fall over repeatedly as you chain part breaks and trips
Clutch counter wouldn't be used anyway, because you would simply cart from the damage you take while latched onto the monster.
This guy just worships the meta, doesn’t he?

SnS tip-do not push directional when pushing O or B.
The slash attack is better than the 3 hit bash.
I love my Great sword its a bit underated but not as much as the hunting horn. Im a wildcard but i love the 2 i mentioned.

For the lance counter I think he meant the limitation of it only working in physical attacks. Not remove the counter entirely
@@craigfunk3453 Fair enough, but that would make it a bit OP since it already has a couple of advantages compared to other counters:-
1-If the counter doesn't trigger it's still a block.
2-It has built-in Rocksteady.
3-Its timing window is very forgiving compared to other counters.
4-When triggered guarantees a tenderizing or a flinch attack if monster isn't enraged.
H7nting horn is mega fun, its hammer with buffs. Its absolutely just a fun time to use, sometimes ill use other weapons if needed but damn the hunting horn is just a good time, very wasy to use to, i would say hh is the best starter weapon.
imagine not being able to bonk all your foes on their head and KO everything in sight.

imagine not being able to obliterate your foes on their head and KO everything from a DISTANCE.

Bit late but the Claw Block with Lance only works on body attacks because: If you block a tail swipe you hook on the tail. If you block a head attack you hook on the head. Your immune to knockbacks for a short time too. Elemental attacks have nothing to hook on you know.
I really wished the added the tonfas's from frontier
I wish the west got frontier
I think he doesn’t likes IG
30:48 instead of dash juice, why not focus on physique gem lvl 5?
"If you are a hammer you should aim at the head"
Me: crying from constant trips from duel blade and longsword at the head
Play solo or kick LS and DB users
then use fucking flinch free and stop whining or go cry in a corner
Yes! Thank you! I was waiting for this, I was really struggling to find a good video or guide about this topic.
With the buffs to SnS it's quite powerful now, maybe the melee weapon with most DPS in the game.
The range is what kills it, miss alot hits.
Achyut Dwivedi top tier and high sustain but dbs and sa win over sns for sustained dps. Burst is cb and gs.
@@Azsnas DBs are debatable but how is SA even close?
