“The Star Fox Team is back! But this time, their mission is to fight for their very existence! The Mario Bros. have decided that the Star Fox franchise no longer has a place within the grand Nintendo universe, and has set out to destroy the Lylat System forever, with the help of characters from more successful Nintendo IPs! They have also posed as Andross in order to hire the infamous Star Wolf team, a rival band of mercenaries led by Wolf O’Donnell, to distract Star Fox while they pull off their plans! Can Fox and his team put aside their former friendship with the Nintendo All-Stars to save both the Lylat System and everything associated with their franchise?”

This is one heck of a rom hack.
Why didn't you change the bosses at the end of Corneria & Kazaru instead of recycling them? At least in the original, the Corneria & Venom bosses on Level 3 were different than the ones on the other 2 levels.
Also, why is there no Level 4? The original had 3 routes & you added 3 more (Level 5, 6 & 7). No level 4? And why is level 6 longer than level 7? None of that makes any sense!
@@Animebryan2 Level 4 is on map 1 (hit R to get to it on the map) and is a boss rush course.
Why didn't I change the bosses?
idk, I did give star wolf a different model in each course as well as an additional routine in course 7.
Mario and luigi were going to originally have different textures/models for course 7 but that didn't happen.
As for why course 6 was longer, idk either.
Honestly didn't plan any of this ahead of time, it was always just phoned in from the very start. Its just a showcase.

Is it possible to mod in avatars of different characters?
Because the base game had some of the avatars in an uncompressed state, making them easily moddable.
@@LuigianoMariano Yes, we have added so many avatars that I had to make a second file for them and a second whole new routine!

How do people even make hacks like this? There are tools online but they only get you so far, do people just write their own ASM code?
@@s1nistr433 We had the full source code of Starfox from the Gigaleak, so I spent the first year of this project just learning the code, working backwards, absorbing the ASM...the next year was all using that knowledge to make some killer levels and effects! It's a lot easier to learn when something already works. Sadly every change I made I had to compile to test lmao, no gui here!
Can't heap enough praise on them. It's such a special gift for the people that loved the original.

This hack's very impressive. The new enemy designs look cool. I wonder how they managed to create new 3D models for this. And the music's awesome too!
We were able to make models in blender and through a few conversion processes we got them in-game! Some also came from Starfox 2 and the Gigaleak in plaintext format.
@@kandowontu5896 Nice! And thank you for answering. I mainly wondered since I know, at least in the Super Mario World community, they use Lunar Magic, as well as other programs for 2D pixel art. But Starfox, I'm like "woah wait, this is a Super FX 3D! How was THIS done?". Awesome to know Blender was used. I come from a 2D art background, but I'm slowly learning Blender to make my own 3D models and rig them.

Do you have a link to those tools? (I'm a CG Artist.) Although I can imagine how limited the polycounts are. It would be interesting to create an environment to fly through that isn't completely vacant.
I can see why Nintendo wanted to utilize the N64. It allowed them to work with far more complex environments. Creating canyon walls or tunnel passages severely restricted the strained enemy count. So it was "do you want lots of enemies, or environmental obstacles?"

The original Starfox, and this game alike have some environment levels too. But you couldn't have scenes like Cornaria with greater then one or two enemies in that space. (if any at that point) Some creativity can skirt this restriction, but it's definingly there.

Why do I feel like this mod is a Nintendo hate letter in disguise? I mean, why the heck would the Mario Bros. want Star Fox dead?!
Quite simply, Nintendo sends cease and desist and dmca notices to immediately shut down anyone who attempts to produce fan works - ESPECIALLY FAN GAMES - of their franchises. Nintendo, however, did not send cease and desist letters to this fan game. I theorize the only reason why Nintendo did not charge up the lawyer lasers again was precisely because this fan game so ostensibly directly called them out, by making various protagonist of their intellectual properties the enemies of the game itself.
And Nintendo would probably want it this way if they were to ever tolerate fan games of their intellectual properties. Specifically, Nintendo would strongly desire their strong hatred of fan games to be featured at the forefront and center in any fan game.
This fan game merely granted Nintendo their own wishes to have Nintendo's disapproval of the fan game as the fan game's main feature.
@@ferretsage8928 There's also two things or criteria Nintendo follows in terms of fan games:
1- The fan game is about a product they're gaining benefits from and they're interested in
2- The fangame is behind a paywall from which the creator is generating profit
If those two are met then you're 100% guaranteed to say goodbye to the fangame/fan project
But Star Fox EX is a free fan project made by modifying a 1993 game from which they no longer gain profits therefore this fan game is immune to Nintendo's ban hammer
My theory is that this romhack is heavy on making other Nintendo's properties the villains as a way of expressing their disgust towards Nintendo's neglect of the Star Fox saga

I scrolled and didn’t see anyone else comment (still may have missed it), but I’m 99% sure that title music is from “X”, a Gameboy game that i believe was not released in the US, but featured two major Nintendo composers, Hirokazu “Chip” Tanaka and Kazumi Totaka. Good stuff.
Avoiding the Twin Blasters power ups was making my teeth itch
Absolute legend for beating the boss @ 1:03:02 without taking any damage. Just attempted this magnificent romhack today and found "Craig" to be a monumental pain in the fucking ass to beat. The bootleg-VMU took me nearly 15 attempts thanks to those damn hovercars that fly off screen and barrage you with ridiculously-fast plasma beams that have such a small window to deflect! Never struggled so hard with a Star Fox boss before.
Anyway, this romhack is great so far and I'm glad to see it getting played! Thanks for uploading!
EDIT : God Mode was used against Craig. Can't blame ya, though. He's a bastard. You still a legend for uploading footage of this game. 👍
Wow! You really weren't paying any attention, were you? He never took ANY damage on that entire last route, because he enabled God Mode, which not only makes him immune from taking any damage, but also gave him unlimited bombs.
You can even see him turn it on at 46:12
@@Animebryan2 Incorrect. I came here specifically for footage on how to beat him, so I skipped ahead after a few levels to that fight after the first few levels to see how that boss was dealt with. But thank you for pointing that out!

Man I love seeing the OG star fox getting some content. I'm not sure how I feel about all the meme bosses and other Nintendo crossovers though. I dunno, maybe I just hate fun

The dev recommended to turn snes9x cpu overclock to Max and SuperFX overclock to 400% so you can enable 60fps mode on page 2 of the options menu.
Doesn't CPU overclock add a boatload of vblank time to give the ROM sufficient time to copy the SuperFX frame to the PPU RAM?

Check the description, the plot says that Mario and the rest of Nintendo wants to get rid of Star Fox and the Lylat system, and Team Star Fox had to fight them all to survive.

Shoehorning run-and-gun and using SF to test hardware gimmicks (Command, Zero) did more damage to the franchise than Krystal's inclusion, even if in hindsight Dinosaur Planet needed a ton of more work before it could be made part of the Star Fox mythos.

Can't help but wonder what the SNES games would have been like if the SuperFX Mode 7 chip was integrated onboard as intended. Developers being able to program for it without an increased cost for their cartridge, might have come out with some interesting things.
whoa where did u heard that info?? thats new to me. i thought sfx chip was soley designed for starfox in mind. since the snes was not worthy to
run it by itself... why most of the other super fx games that did come out after it kinda sucked. lol. but stunt race was cool.

The SuperFX chip wasn't related to Mode 7, it's what allowed for untextured 3d modeling at (what was then) a decent frame rate, as without it, the SNES could only draw 3d images at a few Frames Per Second.
Also the Super FX chip was developed by Argonaut, a British company and wasn't related to Nintendo or the design process of the SNES and it was developed several years after the SNES first hit the shelves.
Still, I think what he was getting at would be cool to think about ; What would have a SNES with a integrated Super FX chip look like in terms of the types of games we might have had?
It's True they only made a few games with the SuperFX/SuperFX2 chips but that's basically because of costs plus what was potentially coming down the road in terms of hardware.
Had it been part of the system we'd have ended up with very different games.

Tie fighter pilot I got lock on this strang ship and it does a somersault and takes out the tie fighter, I bet none of the star wars ships can somersault and deflect lasers.

This is a cool mod and all, but it seems all the bosses just spam lasers at you while you spam them back.

I dunno if I did something wrong patching the game but the controls are a little nuts. At one point, the camera was turning when I'd try to turn the Arwing, and another time, the Arwing kept going up and I couldn't make it come back down.
