    - Generally, SC is safe for use for 3 years.
    - If SC is kept in stores for a long time before purchase, then check it after 2 years of use
    - Write the opened date
    - You can put SC in the fridge for cooling purpose but it won't prolong the expiration date but just kind of slow the oxidation down a little bit
    - Dr. Andrea personally doesn't keep any skincare products in the bathroom bc it's pretty humid there in the shower. Humidity is also a factor related to stability (contamination mold) aside from sunlight
    - When in doubt, throw it out
    - Don't keep your SCs beyond 3 years bc there's no way you would know how much it has degraded. Use them constantly and use them up
    - This is not an issue, don't collect skin care products that you're not gonna use

      Hello please help, I found my moms Vaseline kept in the fridge god knows how long she had it in there but it’s not used at all and I can’t seem to find the expiry date either, so I just want to know is it safe to still use it if it is expired? Good points, don't collect sunscreen and skincare and toss products once they are expired! If we are using sunscreen per the protocols, we'll use it up before the expiration date.
    What helps me is I place a sticky note on the bottom of the product stating the expiration date and the date when I first started using it (especially important for eye shadows, eyeliner, and mascara). New products are in the back of a cool/dark cabinet and older products are moved forward. I toss/weed any expired products every few months.

    If you are on the fence about throwing something out you might be able to check batch or lot numbers on products from manufacturers. They are usually pressed into the tube seal or printed on the label. If you can successfully look up the manufacturer date you'll be able to determine if the ingredients have really gone bad or not.

    Dr. Dray, thank you for addressing this issue. Very often sunscreens do not have expiration dates at all. Instead they have "lot numbers." The most distressing was Coppertone Water Babies (pure & simple mineral based) lotion. The product had a phone number so I called it and they attempted to find an expiration date based on the lot# and were unable to , but was "strongly reassured" that it would "never" be on the chain pharmacy shelves had it been expired. I was sent a coupon for a new bottle. Bottom line I returned it to Wal-Mart and was given a refund.
    I suppose the best is to purchase small sizes, with ample expiration dates. For me personally all Cerave products work perfectly. I opt for coupons as opposed to bulk sales.

    That is so odd, because a Belgian newspaper a few years ago published that sunscreen is good to a year after its date. It doesn't "immediately" expire, apparently. Maybe it depends on the type of sunscreen. And about cosmetic products in general, it's not that they have an internal clock that says, oh, it's 1 minute over midnight, I'm gonna go bad now.

    • @DrDrayzday
      @DrDrayzday  4 роки тому

      to be honest, it is not something that anyone puts much time in to verifying...the newspaper could be right, but the recommendation is to not use beyond expiration date....if we did not do that then someone would develop a rash two days after an expiration date and sue

    Same for hair care products also. Your scalp is skin.
    Check your product life dates on packaging. Many are 12 months. But some can be 18 or 24 months use of life.
    Enough irritation can cause you hair to fall out at the root. There is some controversy right now about DevaCurl products causing hair fall for many who use them. Speculation runs to the company changing hands and possibly switching to less expensive ingredients and improper storage facilities creating heat damage that didn't exist on prior batches and had not caused scalp problems.

    I keep my Vitamin C serum and my eye cream in my mini fridge. The first, because I thought it would slow down its degradation and the second, because the cold eye cream feels good and I figure it might help de-puff a little bit.
    I can understand temperature affecting skin care products but if they're in tightly-closed containers, how can they be affected by humidity?

    Do you feel that all board-certified dermatologists inherently know how to have an efficient skincare routine. There are dermatologist skincare routine videos on youtube which don't work and are not effective going by what i've learned from you. Some use humectants with no follow-up moisturizer/occlusives. Others use expensive antioxidant creams for their neck, and recommend an eye-cream, or hair vitamins.

      me too!

    • @prita2586
      @prita2586 4 роки тому +3

      I believe, as tretanoin is a prescription drug, it will have the expire date on its package, label, stamped on the crimp of a tube, etc, and a proper pharmacy would not even be allowed to dispense something out of date (that’s why an online pharmacy could be risky). For the dating, you may have to look closely at the package for it. If Tretinoin is expired, I’d be scared to use it, maybe something in it might get **more** irritating! I look at it like, I wouldn’t give an expired drug to my child. So, if I’m going to spend money to “baby” my skin, then I’m not taking the chance. Of course, Dr. Dray is the expert here, but that’s kinda my rule of thumb.

    Just a comment, most companies stop testing after a certain length of time such as the 3 year length you site for sunscreens. The idea being it is too costly to continue testing for long periods of times. When drug samples used to be given to patients there was a few months leeway after the expiration date as people would often save them as realize they had just outdated and would still take them. I do believe in watching out dating as it’s smart to stay safe.

    You should review Biologique Reserche! I work with he line directly and I'm interested with what you might say about the serums. They have a plethora of "specific" active serums used to treat specific concerns. Very minimal ingredients for the most part. I also would love to hear what you say about the P50 1970 "toner" (exfoliator) it contains phenol which is controversially outlawed in Europe.

    Dr Dray. I wonder if you can help. I recently discovered that my Colourscience brush on sunscreen has expired after a years use. I contacted CS and was told by the CS team that the Brush-On Shield SPF 50 has just recently completed FDA 3-year stability testing and was found extremely stable, so there is no longer an expiration date on the product. This means that my product will still provide the necessary protection. How credible is this claim. Just wondering why it had an expired date in the first place?

    This year I saw a video of Dr. Dray finishing about 15 sunscreens in a 3 month period. I don’t think it’s bad to have a large skincare collection as long as you actually use it and don’t let it expire.
    But just saying “don’t collect skincare, not a good hobby” sounds offensive for people who have educated themselves about ingredients and enjoy trying new products. I think having variety in your skincare is fantastic and it can improve the quality of your life in many ways.
    Asian sunscreens come with a long expiration date, so as long as you use them before that you should be ok.

    Hey Dr. Dray how do you approach facial care after heavily sweating from an activity, such as going to the gym? I typically wash my face twice a day (morning and night) but I almost go to the gym every afternoon and come back home sweaty. Of course I jump in the shower but im wondering if I should just rinse off my face with water or do I actually use a cleanser and cleanse my face as normal? I have oily/acne prone skin, and wondering how should I approach this.

    Dr Dray! Could you do a video on this topic: skincare in the gym/healtspa/sauna. Is the sauna (dry or wet) good for your skin? Seems like the hot and dry sauna is very drying on the skin? How to treat your skin before and after? Does is enlarge pores? Or avoid? Is sweating good for your skin? How about the swimming pool? Moisturize before or after?? A lot of people visit spa's for their health and beauty but what is the real truth behind this healthy habit? I have a gym with a sauna and I love going in there but I always worry about my skin. I'd like to know as well. As an ultra pale person I buy a lot of sunscreen, but as an unemployed person I don't leave the house much [lol], so I end up with a lot of expired sunscreen. @@Panya.V You can recycle the bottle but you have to make sure the bottle or jar is completely empty and clean of product prior to recycling it. You can’t recycle the formula but the container can. Squeeze out excess product into a plastic bag, tie it, and toss it in the garbage. Also, cut the bottle and clean out the product on the inside of the bottle. I know Nordstrom and bare minerals recycles beauty, skin, and hair care packaging from any brand. There’s a recycling bin in their beauty department.

    Random question: Does mineral suncreen (one in a silicone base) degrade if exposed to air/light? Is it a bad idea to cut open the tube to get th last few squirts out and use it over a few days? I don't leave it open though. I slide the two cut pieces into one another.
