  • The Shell Dip Stitch is great for some assigned pooling yarns. I demonstrate how to work it.
The stitch pattern can be found in A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns by Barbara G. Walker.

Your scarf is so beautiful with this stitch! Thank you for the tutorial. Several years ago I made a blanket from a pattern that had this stitch, but i could find no example, or how to do it, and i ended up using a crochet hook and it was very awkward. This looks a bit fiddly on the wrong side, but I'd like to try it!

Thanks. I'm interested that you have worked this stitch before. I can't say that I had ever seen it used before. Recently I saw someone else using it for an assigned pooling project and decided to try it for myself. I'm so happy with how it turned out.

It looks as if you embroidered the star bursts on the gray yarn

What happens if you come across your color change on the “backside” of the scarf? Do you do the dip stitch the same way, do hey look the same on the front and back of the work?

On the backside you work it in reverse, ie purl the dips instead of knitting them. I hope that makes sense. They do not look the same front and back; there is definitely a Wrong Side.
