We knit every day. Here we talk about what we have finished, what we are working on currently, what yarns and tools we use and other knitting related things. We find a lot of joy in knitting (really!) and want to share that joy with you. We also seek to bring you encouragement in your knitting journey. Posts can be sporadic, so subscribe and click on the notifications to know when a new video goes up. May you be encouraged by what you see.

Tutorial: Hack for flat stranded knitting: the Portuguese Purl
Thanks for this! I watched and watched Arne and Carlos, but the knitting is so fast, that it’s hard to catch. Are you doing a left lifted increase on both sides, when it’s time to increase? This is sooo much easier than FLK or shadow wraps… and I think it looks just as good as the standard German Short Row, but without the tugging at the stitches. ❤
Yes, a left lifted increase on both sides. Glad this was helpful for you.
This is the BEST hint to come out so far! I have started the Butterfly shawl MANY times but stopped bc of that carried yarn.. Time to try again! Thank you! 💕
Oh good, I hope this helps with your shawl. Would like to hear how it turns out!
Fun to see your acquisitions! I can’t wait to see what you make with the multiple skein yarns! Sorry that I didn’t run into you at Rhinebeck. We were only there on Saturday and it was a mob scene. Btw, the button vendor is Dusty’s Vintage Buttons. I also bought there!
It was very crowded on Saturday! Thanks for the info on the name of the button place. Great to hear from you.
Hi Ladies, Happy Birthday Janet.
Hi Jackie! Janet says thank you for the birthday wish.
Thanks for the company again ladies, some beautiful pieces as always 😊. Those Kimberley Perkins yarns are stunning! 😮😊
Thank you for joining us! And yes, those yarns are amazing.
Very good! Great! To me, it's all about the finishing details!
Thank you very much!
Thanks for the shoutout, ladies!
Any time! Great to see you at the festival.
I think those stitch holders are that Scottish cow. I don’t remember what it’s called.
It’s a Highland Coo
Interesting. Never heard of it before, or seen one, I don't think.

Hi Joy and Janet! Thanks for the visit 💝 Happy Birthday 🎂 Janet! 🥳 LOVE LOVE all the beautiful knits and yarns! I'm working on the Sunday Morning Shawl by Espace Tricot I'm on the one endless row of bobbles 😅 I'm karnesee on ravelry
Thanks! Hope you make it through the endless bobbles with your sanity intact. Looking forward to seeing your photos.
Janet also says, "Thank you".
You slip knitwise, is that right?
Yes, slip knitwise for this stitch.
Some beautiful knits there ladies 😊, thankyou for some great company whilst I’m sat knitting my own socks for Christmas 😊
@@Julie-ix7wv thanks! Enjoy your sock knitting 🧶
Best explanation and demonstration I’ve seen thanks!
You are welcome. I'm glad it was clear for you.
My condolences on your mother’s passing. I know it’s never easy, but, may she rest in peace. As far as fiber festivals go, in early September I enjoyed the Scottish Yarn Festival. A few days after I came back, I went to the New Jersey festival on Sunday. And, since my 1st grandchild decided to come early, I am now able to go to Rhinebeck. We will have to arrange a meet up! You both showed so many projects! My favorite has to be that scarf. Really special!
I would like to hear about the Scottish yarn festival! Janet & I will look for you at Rhinebeck. Jackie is also going, but with a different group. Congratulations on the first grandchild!
P,S, 1. Thanks for the fun tip about the sock cuff club. Even at almost $20 CAD it's a good deal -- and I've struggled to knit colourwork socks that fit, so this might help; 2. Out here we have Fibre Festivals in the spring and the fall. I went to one in Camrose, Alberta in May (The Rose City Fibre Festival) and to another (the Prairie Fibre Festival) in mid-September. There was also one farther south in...August, I think. There are wonderful dyers in Alberta and B.C., and shepherds for sheep and alpaca all around the province.
Thank you for filling us in about fiber fests in your part of Canada. It's always fun to hear about them.
First, Joy, my condolences on the passing of your mother. Yes, a good, long life -- and a loving one, from what you said -- but I'm sure you miss her, and will hear her voice from time to time. My mother died 20 years ago a few months shy of 88...and that's certainly true for me! RE: your beautiful scarf that has off-white angora as the background: Angora comes from goats as well as rabbits...so I expect each source has a different feel to it. Is your angora from rabbits? Or goats? RE: Sock ribbing: I confess I'm a 2:2 fan -- k2/p2. It's a stretchier rib than 1:1, which is why I like it. Abd how does the BFL wear? I'm not a fan of ultra-soft yarn (e.g., merino, especially high grade, or even BFL) for socks -- unless they're bed socks and don't get much wear. I prefer a sturdier wool (with or without nylon). I don't know about you, but my feet don't care about softness; I reserve fhat for my neck, arms, or torso (as in sweaters). Just a thought. Just something to think about! Good to see you two together again; watching as I knit...
I tend to avoid merino for the same reason, however BFL calls to me and is difficult to find, usually. I do have another scarf made from BFL that is pilling. As far as I know, all angora fiber comes from rabbits. There is an angora goat, however the fiber from it is mohair. And I did learn from this article that people do shear rabbits! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angora_wool
I am so sorry to hear about your mother's passing Joy but I'm glad to hear that she had a good life. I found knitting so helpful after my mother died and that is when I started watching podcasts. It really helped fill the void. Your Columella turned out so well. I love all the jewel tones. You must get comments when you wear it to go out. Such a unique pieces. Your Christmas socking is just lovely. For not knitting this summer you sure caught up fast! Best wishes.
Thanks. I finally found time to watch your latest podcast and am heading right over there to comment!
I want to one last March in Dixon, Tennessee and plan to go to one in February in Mississippi. I live in Alabama.
Oh! I've never been to that part of the country. I hope Hurricane Helene wasn't too bad in your area.
Thank you! I am about to knit another pair of socks and have tried so many methods for the toe and heel and felt they were, for me, too fiddly or too many stitch markers but this one looks like the one I will use from now. Your explanation is so good, not too fast.
I'm glad the tutorial was helpful for you.
@@QuailsKnittingNest Thanks. Yes, I have knitted the toe of my sock and this method is perfect. I am using a yarn with colour changes but this method would look even better with solid colour yarn as yours does. I have never considered contrast yarn for the heels and toes but I will do that on my next pair!
This is by far my favorite heel. I tried learning from Arne's tutorial ( I love them both), yours was much easier to follow and learn. Thank you!
You are welcome. It is my favorite shortrow heel, and I always use it for that.
It’s like magic thank you so much for the tutorial
@@cottagekeeper1044 you are welcome!
First time watching. You are both beautiful knitters. I vote dark blue.
Welcome! Thank you for the feedback, we appreciate it.
Joy, your stranded knitting is absolutely flawless, I was in awe of that beautiful hat!. Jackie is lovely isn’t she?, I would go for the dark blue myself, great episode ladies 😊
Thank you for your comments and feedback!
Wonderful to see Jackie again! I vote for the dark blue to edge the squares. (You can always count on me to put my 2 cents in!) You both had so many beautiful finished projects and so many lovely new yarns to show. Stunning new sweater design, Jackie, and I love the baby sweater, Joy. Hope to see you both soon!
Thanks for your 2 cents, we appreciate it!
I'd like to try this stitch for a different design but that would involve increases - would that be possible and if so how? Thanks!
@@spiggyholz8824 Yes, you can do that. I would swatch different increases to see which one looks best. Probably you would need to work a double increase to keep the pattern in line
@@QuailsKnittingNest Thank you so much - I'll have a fiddle around and see what I come up with
I like the dark color for your squares.
@@patsycoats4061 Thanks for your input
What a great episode. So glad Jackie could join again. Your Persian Dream blanket will be an heirloom when you are done. Loved your baby sweater. I am looking for good baby patterns. No grandchildren yet but there is talk about it in the near future. Take Care!
@@mywonderfulknittinglife Oh, that is exciting that you may have grandkids in the future. Here's to fun baby knits.

@@wordforger great!
Finally finished watching while knitting baby hats!
@@EileenKampf Here's to baby hats! I hope you are enjoying retirement.
Loved the tiny cats, Joy! The Farm & Fiber Knits magazine sounds very interesting. I hadn’t heard about it before. It’s exciting to see the designers who are participating - especially Alice Starmore! Her daughter Jade also designs knitwear but the garments tend to be theatrical costumes rather than wearable every day items. The article from Meg Swansen sounds familiar to me. Didn’t she write on that topic in Interweave or Vogue Knitting? Btw, I have the book Twisted-Stitch Knitting by Maria Erlbacher if you ever want to borrow it. The patterns are quite beautiful. Finally, I’m so happy that everyone seemed to enjoy our Knitting to Flatter class! It was a wonderful day!
Oh yes, the knits from Alice Starmore in this issue are quite theatrical! But there are some wearable mitts, scarves & hats. I don't remember if Meg wrote another article about the Twisted Knitting, but I had the book for awhile and then got rid of it because I decided I would never use it.
Hi again! I'm watching as I knit on the first piece (the back) of a cotton summer tee top (Vincas from Berroco, with Estelle Young Touch Cotton DK -- discontinued -- deep stash!). I love your wee kitties (I have 3 cats -- 1 elder and two that are siblings, 1 year old) but haven't the patience to do the fiddly knitted kitties you've done,, Joy! As for the chicken -- I'm happy to admire from afar. NOT happening here! LOL! Again, the "fiddly factor" that I associate with ALL knitted toys has kicked in. Knitting is in itself my emotional support! RE: the 10-stitch hat. Hmmmm....I'm inclined to trust your review before I take the plunge and add it to my repertoire (mostly made from stash for charity). It seems to me there are other, better options for hats that I want to knit to give away! I was interested in your comments about Fiber Knits "magazine" as I have received information urging me to sign up. I'm Canadian so must consider that the cost in CAD is 30% higher. A $65 USD publication (or offering) would cost me $100 CAD -- and to receive only one REAL copy of it...and have the rest "dribbled out" (my perception) by e-mail?! Not happening at my end. Happy July 4 to you. Canada Day is July 1...so this is a very special week!
Hi Margaret. That Vincas top is a really cute design! I'm sure you will enjoy it. I don't normally go for fiddly things, but the mini cats grabbed me, lol, and they actually were not too fiddly to make. Have fun on Canada Day. :)
After watching some other tutorials, this one is a real blessing! So much clearer to follow and looks beautiful! Thank you!
You are welcome!
Thanks! I was just getting ready to frog a striped shawl b/c I didn't like the way I was carrying the yarn up the side.
You are welcome!
L9ve this 😂
Thanks
Can i use this for toe up with gusset ?
Not sure exactly what you are asking. You can use the short row for the toe (I have another video demonstrating this). I would not use this short row combined with a gusset for the heel, as this short row method completes the heel turning with no gusset needed.
That’s brilliant, I’m looking forward to trying that out. It looks very neat 😊
Thanks. Hope it works well for you
Lovely makes as usual, ladies! Loved the buttons for Janet’s Felix! I’m working on a lightweight sweater called Chinkapin Pullover with the softest yarn ever. Next up will be a summer top called Iris by Yumiko Alexander that should be lots of fun.
Both of those tops are in my favorites! I'm looking forward to seeing your versions.
I’m behind on watching your last 2 episodes! I wanted to comment on your double knitting issue with rowing out, Joy. I’ve had the same issue. It’s worse if using cotton yarn, of course. Better if I reduce needle size. Interestingly, I saw a friend yesterday who was working on her 1st double knit hat from a class she had just taken. It looked perfect. When I commented on how nice the stitches appeared, she said the instructor said to go back and tighten up the purl stitches after working 3 or 4 of them. I imagine that this could be very slow and tedious, but might be worth exploring? Let me know if you try it!
Interesting that you had the same issue. And Jackie told me she had problems with it, too. The interesting thing to me is that a few years ago when I did some more double knitting, it did not plague me at all. That fix of manually tightening up the stitches does sound tedious; I'm not likely to try it, but thanks for the suggestion!
Thanks Joy! Great tutorial👏I wondered if I was doing it correctly...I've only tried it once before...I will try again with confidence 😀
You are welcome. Knit on with confidence. :)
I think you found this bind off from me, Joy. I used it in a recent project which you commented on. I had never heard of it before either. The one thing that I found which made it a bit easier on my wrists was to use a short dpn for the right needle. It made me feel like I had less distance (and no cable!) to twist around. See if it makes a difference for you!
Yes, I definitely got it from you! I did not have any issues with the needle I was using, but will keep your tip in mind.
That silly chicken brought me back to knitting after a six-year hiatus a couple weeks ago after I randomly saw it on social media somewhere 😂 since finishing it I've knit 4.5 hats and a shawl! Very grateful to be back in the yarn :) I loved your cardigans, blankets & anecdotes! This is the first video I've seen of yours and I love it, looking forward to more!! 💟
Lol, here's to the chicken! Glad you enjoyed the video; welcome to the podcast.

Quite clever. Been knitting almost 60 years and still finding new things to learn.
I think it's amazing that there is almost always something new to learn.
Beautiful knits ladies! Thanks for the visit 😀 people are starting to call me the chicken lady...I finished my 16th chicken yesterday May 25th...careful they are addicting and everyone wants one! 🐔🐔🐔❤ I'm Karnesee on ravelry
Wow, that's a lot of chickens! I'm glad you are having fun making them.
I’ve got a Tolsta Tee in HolstGarn Tides on the needles, and I’m knitting a Tegna in Knit Picks Lindy Chain for my daughter’s birthday in early June. :) Fun podcast, Ladies!
Are you adding any flair to your Tolsta Tee, or knitting it straight up?
Joy, you surely are able to make lemonade out of a lemon! Your ability to “fix” your Felix is amazing!!! Janet, your Felix is lovely!! I’m not a summer knitwear wearer…I knit sweaters all summer so I have new ones to wear in the fall. And, knitting for the grands happens in the summer!
I think I would be too hot to knit winter sweaters for myself in the summer! But small knits for grandkids is great. I look forward to seeing what you make this year.
LOL! So you've fallen for that chicken too, eh? I confess that a) I don't like finicky projects -- including toys -- and I don't enjoy making short rows -- so I'm just being entertained by all the chicken-makers out there, happy to watch from the sidelines. As for a summer top -- I made one last year, and had great intentions (patterns and stash yarns at the ready) but...my daughter approved the "Presto Vesto" from Amy Gunderson for Xmas 2024/Birthday -- January 2025 -- and it's *quite* the knit. That's my focus -- along with some socks and cross stitch and gardening -- for this year. It's still chilly here -- in the fifties and low sixties Fahrenheit (rough translation from 10 -14 Celsius) so I'm still enjoying wool socks and sweaters!
The Presto Vesto looks like a fun cable knit. Will you be adding a zipper? I have never done that with any of my knits.
