- Deckhand Chad Jones must climb the radar mast onboard the Luxury Super Yacht AWOL. Before he goes up there we undergo a full risk assessment and permit to work. Later in the video we go though all the water toys that we carry in the garage.

We want to see "the Bullet" throwing a heaving line!! :D
Back around 1980 I had a friend that was washing down a tuna tower on a sport fishing yacht. I guess they're about 20 feet or a little more off of the deck. He slipped and fell off and the fall killed him. RIP "Charlie Tuna".
We always used to lock the breakers with padlocks on radars and radios and the person working aloft would keep possession of those keys until they finished working...that way there could be no accidental switch on...the main hazard of course being RF....
Just like us having to have confined space entry permits, and hot work permits. We have flight crew check lists, pre flight check lists, post flight check lists, and check lists for check lists lol!
Dangerous duties: -
- Sneaking the owner's girlfriend aboard when the wife is also aboard!
- Disposing of owner's drug stash as customs are approaching AND he's ashore with mistress - and unable to buy any more!
- Going ashore to retrieve crew member from dubious establishment in very dodgy are of town - in South American port!
- Hearing about crew member's chronic alcohol problem when docking in Saudi or similar state!
If anybody thinks your job is just enjoying yourself in the Med, then they should think again.
You are a very clever, talented and hard working person, Tristan, along with your crew.
You earn every bit of your pay. Big respect to you. Glen in England.
Living The Dream!!! Awesome 😎! Stay Safe Out There! Thnx! CJ
I think it's interesting to see how other countries other than the US do things. Here in the US I could send somebody up to clean the radar and only use a clothesline for safety. We definitely do not have to fill out paperwork for things like this.
I think it's great that the government is looking out for the safety of all people.
When our boys were younger we used to send them up on the hardtop to wipe everything down twice a year. They actually would argue with one another on whose turn it was. Sometimes we just let them both go up there. Now that's both for them are grown men and now are both United States Marines. I have to pay someone to go up there and clean the top. Normally twice a year I have the outside professionally detailed. I have too much boat to do it myself. Our current boat is 30 m and the last time I tried to do it myself after 5 days I was not even done one side. I am known for being very cheap and do not like to pay for something that I could do. After spending 5 days I had no problem at all getting professionals to finish up what I started.
Now that I am and my wife are getting older we are now talking about bringing a crew aboard so we can just enjoy our travels. I just don't see people that are professionals like yourselves. A lot of our friends who do have crew aboard just have horror stories of what they had gone through to find the right people. I loved when you showed yourself in your evening uniform. You look very professional. For myself it does not matter what time of day it is or if we are just docking I'm always wearing a t-shirt and shorts with my boat shoes. Even when we are home during the winter months, I walk around with no socks and my boat shoes.
I also have to say I really love your garage. Our next boat I want a garage just like yours. Normally every two years we trade our boat in but this year with the virus we really did not get to use it like normal. We are still going to hit the last shows of the year as long as they have them.
I really do enjoy watching your videos. After watching your adventures over in Europe we are seriously considering sending our boat over there unless we get one with bigger fuel tanks and then I would just cross the Atlantic. We have a few friends that make the crossing every year but most of them are sailboats.
Looking forward to seeing your next video.
Tristan, have you ever had guests on board who were fans of your channel before they booked a trip on AWOL?
Yeah, lots have seen the channel before they book with us. Cheers, James @SYC
Just curious when you turn off breakers and horn while Chad works... do you have lockouts on the breakers?
I see all the stuff in the garage strapped to a minivan going to the beach
You should have a working at height rescue plan. If the person at height falls/becomes unconscious you must be able bring them safely to ground to administer first aid if needed.
Good views of your sporting goods area.
Once again, helpful and informative.
Yet again very good video especially the sound of the water...
Good point about accessing caves.
Radio question. In busy harbors how do you avoid being on the same radio channel as other yachts ? Seems to me even with 100 channels you would have conflicts.
Dang Capt T, you lookin’ all dapper in this one. Only thing missing is a parrot on your shoulder. Ok, also, the tri corner hat, an eyepatch, and a Jolly Roger name patch. I got a brilliant idea, practice your boarding techniques by using the chase boat for practice. GoPro, get ready!
More reasons to engage a captain and crew!
All of the sailors who have been on a 100ft+ mast trying to fix something in the dark, in the stormy seas are now shaking they’re heads.
“He’s happy as Larry”. Never heard that one before.
Tristan short question. Normaly the tender is in the garage. But your garage is full of toys :) Where is the tender onboard. Cant find a video of that.
Uniform is looking very smart well done guys you have passed inspection
Does the hot tub need to be emptied before you get underway? Or does it seal the water in somehow for heavy seas?
Do you have a permit to walk the Plank? or permit to keel haul a scurvy knave?? Seems these would make your job more fun.
I wouldn’t call that task a dangerous duty but an everyday routine duty of a deck hand, I do agree that a safety harness is required and a competent worker but, certainly not a big deal. I been sailing for over 30 years and have done some very sketchy tasks but sooging a radar arch isn’t one of them lol
Dangerous jobs... Out on the funnel yardarm fixing the HF Main Roof Arial on one of Her Majesties Ships, which was alongside in Djibouti when the engineers decide to flash up the engines.
Captain trawling is towing nets , trolling is towing lures bit picky I know . Enjoy your channel
The regulations you discussed are very interesting. In construction of buildings in nyc we have a very similar check list and all gear has to be inspected. When your craft travels the world what dictates the regulations you follow on your craft? For example if you are docked in nyc,Miami, Puerto Rico or cayman island etc. Do you adhere to that state or countries regulations or is it the owner of the boats regulation or possibly the insurance companies regulations. Thx for the great videos. Very informative
Do all big vessels have permit things like that or do it differ between like county’s or company’s or type of boat ?
My wife works for Lloyds Shipping of London and is involved with the SERS (Ship Emergency Response Service) team and has been for a number of years, is AWOL signed up to this service or something similar? This is not a casual underhand sell by the way but I'd be curious to know if private charter yachts subscribe to such schemes?
Love your videos, especially the everyday types (like this one). You might want to get a mic pretty bad auto when you turn away from the camera.
The toys I saw missing is scuba gear.
Very informative 👍
thanks for sharing! good video!
yea, It sounds like a similar "drill" for mast monkeys on the DDGM. 1) Secure & lock out the sweep radar then the high intensity guidance beam, verify the former with 1 lb package of Oscar Meyer weiners. 2) outfit & secure harnesses to safety guideline. It really does not look that high from the fore or aft deck but at 200+ feet looking down it commands respect. All tools carried aloft were separately lanyard secured; a 9 inch crescent wrench falling from 150 feet can ricochet off many things & it leaves a mark.
I always wondered about the pool, that makes so much sense!
I really like those
Turning off the breakers - do you have any lock out available ? Mandatory on Industrial equipment . Really looking forward to Croatia !
got to loto
Great video as always. Just to say that the sponsor’s link in the description is not hyperlinked.
Wow, all those toys, how much fun can a person have! Is Chad still up the mast?
Makes you wonder how early seafarers managed to discover the world. What a load of bureaucratic nonsense.
Early Seafarers didn't live in a Litigation society.
Thankyou to all the Ambulance chasers etc (Ummm please note my sarcasm) who have added to the cost of running a business. Not only third party Liability insurance but also Work Cover insurance.
Just man up an die trying to earn a living for yourself and saving your employer money on safety nonsense, like a real man, am i rite?
Hey Tristan. Hope you can chat a little about your crew contact with guests. Do they ever ask you as captain to have dinner with them. Does Harry join guests swimming and water play especially with kids.
The link for the raffle is not working trying it out at 12;24 PM Central Daylight Time 05/16/2020
What no jet skis! And you need more see bobs. Good to see a protective pool for the kids. What on earth you have bycycles for I don't know,!
Think an investment needs to be made in the toys dept.
Scuba diving kit?
Oh well I'll have to settle for a chillax time on board. We'll done Capt.
Hi,
Just a quick question, will the raffle only truly close when 40000 tickets have been bought? Keep doing what you're doing love you videos.
Why does "the bullet" display Captain (four rings) rank insignia? Only the Captain should reflect the highest rank onboard.
Chief Engineer ?
If you note, Bullet has a prop and four bars, Captain there has an anchor and four bars. Bullet is highest rank in the engineering section, Captain is highest rank on the vessel (the anchor).
Love the sound track!!!
ive got a blue cave video, it was ok at best. nice falls though.
Heaving line master class pls skipper. Bet it's nice to be back
Love the vids
How comes the Chief Engineer is wearing four stripes as well? Just curious....
"Bullet" has a prop and four bars, Captain there has an anchor and four bars. Bullet is highest rank in the engineering section, Captain is highest rank on the vessel
Missing those jet surfboards!
When do we see Chad doing a 2-1/2 inside tuck into the AWOL pool from his position aloft?
Hi Tristan. Loving the channel!!!! Who decides the itineraries for the charters? Is it the charter agency or yourself?
Tristan, love the video as always. With regard to the swimming pool, is is onerous to clean the jellyfish safely from the nets/screen safely when you bring it back on board?
If you want to go up the mast, do you need permission from yourself? Also... would like to see a video on precautions to enter a void... atmosphere, all that. Tx...
#1 avoid voids unless ventilated or send it the ship's 3rd mate with a canary to test the void
I really get a kick out of all of your videos. Great production quality! I tried to click the link to enter your raffle but the link doesn't work. Any suggestions? Thanks for all the hard work.
3:36 Sure glad he's wearing the safety helmet, a bird might poop on his head!
& if the mast was a lot taller, Tristan would probably need one too, for a "similar" reason!! ;-)
👏great video 👍
Do you need a Fishing License for non-commercial fishing like it we do in the states?
I’m betting (hoping... praying!) to wing the vacation onboard AWOL!
How about promoting the Raffle more (so tickets sell out)! Love the videos. Thanks.
Not to be pedantic but captain is the title of a person in charge of one boat, since your in charge of Awol, and the chase boat, and sometimes a support boat, doesn't that make you a Super Yacht Commodore?
The chase boat has its own captain, this year it is Harry.
@@CuriousFocker right, and the guy in charge of managing both boats is the Commodore, so you would have one captain of the chase boat, and one Commodore in charge of the entire fleet.
Robert Parker I like that! Commodore!
Does AWOL have a strap in fishing chair for deep sea fishing?
So ad for the inflatable toys, raffle tickets, and the normal UA-cam ads. There’s more ads than there was content.
Bought a Raffle Ticket yesterday! Fingers crossed!
The raffle link is not working...
What licenses do you need to be a captain if a ya team that size?👍
Watching your video today while having lunch
I jumped back and thought to myself
All these yachts are cruising all over the world my islands etc
A few years ago paul allens mega yacht found the wwII submarine.. i dont believe for a second they were looking for that.. they were looking for sunken treasure ships
So all these millionares or yacht charter companies should buy the submarine magnetometer and drag ot along their island trips.. document lat long and send a diving team back to the area
It took mel fisher 17 years to find the 700 million dollar treasure from the ATOCHA
but here is the thing guys he would go into the ocean on april 1st for a few months
He did not search for 17 years straight
The season will be over the time its ready 🤣
No waverunners?
I just bought my ticket. yipeee
Hi Tristan Slaven and Chad. Another great video. You look smart in the black dress code normally reserved for when the owner onboard. Hows the 10k votes for the weekend on an Axopar? And the silent yacht catamaran? 😎🛥👨✈️
Mind doing a video on starting off as a deckhand and qualifications
Hi Tristan,
what is the current situation concerning Corona in Croatia / Montenegro etc.?
You may want to check the contest link, send you to an error page
What a load of shit lol, I know you have to do it by the books for legal reasons...but they act as if he's on a mine sweeping mission
Hey Tristan first really enjoy your videos only been subscriber for just over a week and been playing catch up.
On this one your are talking about your safety requirements. Have point out that you failed as you should have been wearing hard hat when someone is working above you and risk to you is of something falling.
Thanks and going watch rest video now.😎😎
Seems like the only tool being used was a polishing towel, it wouldn't hurt your head very much.
Can You have a boat tour
Tristan - I don't recall if I have seen the ladder up to the mast in place before or if it's removable (which I'm hoping) - if it doesn't remove, how on earth do you INSURE some dumb, smart-arse child doesn't decide he wants to climb it when no one is isn't looking.
Please tell me its not permanent - even tho I can't tell if it is just hooked onto something.
11:51 There it is: folded and stored.
I’ve seen Awol anonced 4 sale is it true??
Åge Steiro It’s true. It is up for sale. They do not have a buyer yet, so they are going to keep using it till then.
What do you have for all these checklists when you have a sailing yacht? The freaking captain also needs a helmet when standing under a worker aloft, and he should be wearing a harness if spotting for someone aloft in the event he would need assistance.
ArtVanAuggie: Exactly what I thought regarding the harness. Didn‘t even think about the helmet when standing under workers.
How are you gonna help if you have to run for your own safety equipment first in an emergency?
And there must be a rescue plan in place should something happen to the worker overhead ! .... how would you get him down if he loses consciousness etc... ?? not just a rescue plan if working over water .......
No Jet skis?
what's a jetty fish?😁
Hi Tristan videos are always good. I notice you have 4 x e scooters, obviously in the uk their illegal unless on private land. you need to reg with DVLA, insurance, motor bike license/ moped, number plate etc blah blah
So when your in none uk, do the guests have to have the same as the uk laws?
Blah blah, so when abroad on other countries roads dose your guests have to be covered with an insurance of some kind and any road laws in force ?
Fill out the paper work.
Fill out the paper work.
And fill out the paperwork.
What no jet skies ?
No Jet ski's???
Hey skis are on a deck or on the support yacht. Have you seen the support yacht for AWOL?
@@aaronschwartz5250 I don't think they are on the chase boat lol
Bad link for the raffle
To the safety harness:
1. how long is the life line?
2. when he passed out, due to any reason, you have only 15-30 minutes to free him, otherwise he can die due to suspension trauma. It’s a good idea to think about how to do it in advanced.
Who's tacx neo surely you can't get Zwift on board
All that paperwork just to do a bit of dusting.
Should you be stood directly under where he’s working.....just saying.
Did I miss the electric hydrofoil bikes?
Do you everer have securety gards on the boat during charter. Not privat securety gards thet the gest bring but thet gards thet owener has sent to be whit you.
I'm surprised you don't have jetskis
Ben 247 They do have jet skis or sea doos. They are getting serviced right now; they will pick them up later at another location. He also mentioned they keep the water skis on the chase boat.
The video come out for four minutes Ago
You guys are missing a jetski.
ANDRE AWOL has two of them. They are away, being serviced right now. They will pick them up later at another location. That’s what he was referring to, when he asked if anybody could tell what was missing from the toys.
Hi, the link appears to be broken. Get an error message for the raffle. Great videos by the way!
