    The first Sia one just had the backing track of the chorus way louder than her actual voice, so she was basically just "singing" (more like speaking) the low end.

      HoodAlien no that’s not right , her vice was croaky from the morning (GMA) and she even said on LIVE GMA that she cried backstage and she knows it’s going to be bad, she attempted the high notes and her voice was cracking and she was pushing so hard to reach the notes and her head voice notes weren’t coming out , so then she just gave up and went down and octave

      She has vocal nodules since childhood. One of the reasons why Mariah doesn't tour as much for an artist of her caliber. Also her mom is a classically trained singer and has trained her mostof her life, and she also share the same coach with Celine Dion.

    I love watching your reactions to singers! I've had several different vocal teachers in the past, but you always have slightly different ways of putting things that make more sense to me (especially with the mixing thing which makes so much sense but ive never heard of before) and I wish I had discovered you and your website sooner! I hope you don't get too overwhelmed by all the Kpop fans asking for reactions and just continue reacting to things that make you happy or allow you to give insight to other's voices.
    Also the way you give criticism is so non-aggressive and helpful and I can tell that you're a great teacher that I would have loved to take from. I hope you meet lots of success!

    I felt for Katy in that first bit. She probably couldn't hear herself, and was jumping up and down for show. So of course when she was standing and chilled and could hear it was better. I've had the experience (far fewer witnesses though! hehe) where I could NOT hear myself in the monitor, and hot damn if I didn't push all the feeling out of my vocals. so annoying! Boo... that's a failure of tech first. oh well, live and learn, and do soundcheck! Full band musical sound check!

    • @albertjacobosantana6985
      @albertjacobosantana6985 6 років тому +1

      She should still to the acoustic feel she has down before, when she stands and isn't moving around she is much better but she won't do that because she loves to put on a performance?

    • @melissakateproductions8193
      @melissakateproductions8193 5 років тому +3

      @@albertjacobosantana6985 It would be awesome if you could, but if you've ever tried to speak to a friend in a club that is playing music loudly, and you find yourself talking extra loud because you can't hear yourself? That's what singers do, too. If you can't hear yourself in your own head, because the music around you is very loud, you don't have a magical note box inside your throat that tells you when you hit the right notes. (I remind instrumental musicians all the time that even if you can't hear, you can pretty much tell if your fingering is wrong. Singers don't have that second back-up sense to use.) You have to be able to hear yourself... and if the sound guys get it wrong, or the mix isn't right for the singer, the tendency is to push the voice. Also, when you're hyped up on a live show, sometimes you forget to calm down and focus on the singing... because you DO want to put on the performance,... or you jump around because you know you can't hear, and you might as well distract the audience from the fact that your singing isn't going to be its best. It's amazing all the techniques and the tricks and things you have to do. The older, more experienced singers generally have figured out how to overcome these difficulties... the younger ones still have to learn it. And Katy is still, all things considered, quite young.

    With the 'worst' Adele performance... I think that was at the Grammys and there was a major technical issue? Something about the mics in the piano hitting the strings and making it sound out of tune, so she was thrown off. The performance wasn't that bad imo... I think she just got frustrated towards the end.

      It looks exactly like a video I have of her in LA in concert. Same dress, lighting, everything. She was sick as hell. Drinking tea w/honey all night. When she would talk to the crowd or tell stories about life, songs, etc. you could hear she wasn't healthy. But, she still put on a GREAT show. She had one or two moments like that and even joked about them. She wasn't speaking in between shows because she didn't want to cancel the tour. It wasn't long after she came back. Either way, if it was from that tour or with the monitor malfunction, still better than most. She really is great in concert. And funny.

    Mariah... oh god. I’m a recently converted lamb, and there are about 1,000 things that kind of went wrong with her at some point. Her mom, a respected opera singer and vocal coach, helped her with technique stuff when she was younger, but to my knowledge, Mariah hasn’t been near a voice teacher in years. And while she absolutely had good instincts, and still does now to some extent, you should always have a coach or something be able to pop in and go “this is good, but remember to focus on this” and so on and so forth. She’s also been touring, performing, and recording for about straight 15 years (and doing almost nothing else). Not only is this not great for people to sing this much on its own, this also means that she has never gotten as much sleep and rest as she needs (I’m pretty sure insombia is also a symptom of Bipolar II Disorder, which she has been diagnosed with. That can’t help anything). And then there are the nodes. Mariah has been open about how she has had nodules since she was very young and that she learned how to sing around them. I know very little about how that would practically work (I’ve been lucky enough to avoid nodes), but eventually it seems that they’re finally hurting her (especially now that her mom isn’t coaching her anymore). In short, Mariah Carey for a new voice teacher, sleep, and vocal rest, 2020.

    I'm no expert by any means but the more I delve into the world of voice control/singing, it seems to me that one of the most common things that messes up a performance is just tension. Vocalists pushing and straining when they don't need to. Everything just becomes harsher, brittle, can start to waver and crack or just not have that smooth, rich tone you sometimes want; lacks control. I guess there's something to the old adage, "They make it look easy." Making it look easy means you're performing whatever it is well enough so as to appear effortless.

    A lot of times I feel like some of these comparison videos people make has a lot to do with where it’s being recording and what kind of mic is being used. Like, the audio and acoustics of what’s being recording. So for Adele and KP for examples are both very different recording sessions and the acoustic ones are the “best” ones.

    So I don't understand 90% of what you're saying because I don't sing. What I take away from this is that people who shit on singers who don't play an instrument should shut up. Based what you've shared there are just as many things to learn when training your voice as there are when learning an instrument. The voice IS an instrument.

    • @katherinemorelle7115
      @katherinemorelle7115 6 років тому +20

      Jenn Feeley it absolutely is an instrument- and it can be a lot more finicky than other instruments. Even just what you eat or drink can change your sound- I used to take a shot of port before performing, if I didn’t have enough warm up time 😁
      But because it’s biology, it changes from hour to hour. Half of the talent of being a singer (imo) is learning how to work with whatever your voice is doing on that particular day. Some days my voice is huskier than others, and it’s better to lean in to a little more vibrato (those are the best days for singing the blues). Other days, my voice can be quite clear- and I’ll usually go in for some classical or traditional Gàidhlig folk. Obviously, I can change up what I sing because I’m no professional, but it just goes to show just how much your voice can change from day to day.
      I don’t know of any other instrument that’s as variable as the voice- wood or metal might change a little over time, but they don’t have those big day to day changes, because they aren’t biological. It’s why I think singing is the hardest instrument to play.

    • @darb6808
      @darb6808 5 років тому

      People who play and instrument and sing are worth more than people who just sing as musicians probably 7 times out of ten. If you are a singer who doesn't play an instrument, doesn't know any music theory, and/or cannot write more than a simple melody, then it's not much to brag about, because SO MANY MUSICIANS are WAY more impressive than that, that is, if they are more than just a singer. I agree that one shouldn't crap on just singers, but just singers are a menace to the musical scene. It's really hard to deal with a front man, especially if they think they are more important or impressive than they think they are. Because while I was taking time off of whatever I was doing to learn music and an instrument, they were singing every time they showered, and then BOOM! . . . Another singer . . . Just like the last one . . . To a band a singer is only worth more than a bass player, because singing is just less impressive than the guitar, or the keyboard, or the drums, and so many people do it.

      I think he contains how bad some moments are well so that he is still show casing his ability as a teacher. Would you want a teacher to be disgusted with your mistakes or just say, "That's really not bad." and then he helps you down a path of improvement.

    do a video for John Legend. He's one of these singers I sometimes can't tell if he's good or not. I feels he's kinda OK, but most people seems to think he's really great; need an unbiased professional opinion.

      Atoh I think a lot of the difference in some of these was the mics as well. They’re comparing headset mics to handheld. Bad recordings aren’t necessarily bad performances.

      Also comparing full concerts where the singer might have done a whole set already with dancing and singing and everything, they're probably exhausted and dehydrated and everything, compared to an acoustic, radio or small session where they're relaxing and probably are only singing a few songs at once and don't have to sing over a crowd.

  • @Tara-yu4qd

    Okay but the “worst” video for Adele was the video where she was getting emotional because of the crowd, if I’m not mistaken?

    I think Harry Styles has a good higher-register voice, but his natural range is clearly so much lower than what he was singing with One Direction. I wasn’t super into him until after he released his solo album, and he’s so much better live when his music matches his style and his range.

    • @silkeHoekstra
      @silkeHoekstra 5 років тому

      Clearly.. I was a massive one direction fan and am now a massive harry styles solo fan. One direction was obviously very commercial, unlike harry as a solo artist. People tend to favour high notes over lower notes which is why I reckon in the one direction days they opted for the higher ones. Hence why people usually tend to think zayn is the best singer of the five. they falsely associate high notes with a better technique
