Mountain Wild Camping in extreme weather. First real test for Hilleberg Allak 2 - Gale force winds!

  • Afternoon all!
    Back again after a massive break from most socials. I've been spending most of this summer doing up my house so UA-cam has been a little neglected.
    I got myself a new tent to take into the mountains, Hilleberg Allak 2
    I wasn't expecting bad weather but I was delt a pretty rough hand. The first night was fairly windy and I got very little sleep due to the flapping of the tent, strong easterly winds forced me to pitch on the west side of a rocky outcrop, then around 2am of my second night the wind direction changed directions and gales battered me full on making this one of my worst but most memorable camps ever!
    Hope you all enjoy seeing me suffer.
    Have a good weekend guys, and hopefully I won't leave it so ling until my next video

      🤣 it sure didn’t! Bloody mental. When you went ‘f+ck me!’ the wind replied ‘OK THEN!’ I was howling, oh I felt so sorry for you, at the 6am mark, I’d be crying by that bit 😂 🌬️ ⛺️ 💨 I love watching WildBeare so now I’m following your channel too. Hi from Switzerland.
    Nice hike but nice strong wind too.
    I have the Allak 3. I had in the past few situations like you with strong winds, hard strong snow storm etc.
    The tent had hold it presta good.
    Something that i can recommend you is buy 3 more poles for the tent.
    I did it and was very good solution to hold the reallly bad weather.
    Another tip is if possible try don't set up the tent close the midium or top the hills.
    At dusk the air thermal currents change abruptly.
    The cold air descends faster, cooling the rest of the hot air, creating the typical wind tunnel between mountains or hills.
    If you add a storm, you have the perfect combination of having to dismantle everything and look for a new location as quickly as possible, and if you have to do it at night, you increase the risk of an accident.
    Cheers 👍

    Me and my mate got lost coming off the sugar loaf mountain and I think we ended up on the cambrian way, some beautiful ancient trees but after 40mins up the mountain, 4hrs back to the carpark was a bit much (we were kipping in my car not even setting up a tent!), I survived the trip munching on foraged blackberries and hawberries. I dunno how u do it chap, so good to see someone reflecting reality rather than just the ideal.

    Nice to catch up with you again Ash and sorry to see you had a tiring tough time there.
    Myself and my son in law were camped not too far from your second night when we were on our Cambrian way journey which we have now completed and I was pleased to see you still hold those ambitions. It’s definitely the best trail I have done, we did it in 2 short and 2 long sections. I know you wanted tho do it north to south but I do feel south to north could be better.
    Anyway great to see you out and All the best to you.

    I wild camped once in the Rhinogs, was supposed to do the traverse from Talsarnau to Barmouth. Day 1, can't remember the storm but my poor banshee was blowing down and slapping my face, I was laying in a puddle by sunrise and went home, haven't been back since 😂 I now use it a memory to help my resolve when things get bad camping, what doesn't kill us.......

    Hi Ash.
    You probabaly know this, but a MUST HAVE item that it looks like you haven’t got is a set of Delta Ground Anchor tent pegs. The way they are made the more you pull on them, the more they dig n drive down into the ground.
    They’re chunky, but very very lightweight as made out of a polycarbonate.
    Get enough for the guylines, 6 in your case? And two extra. Have a gander at them in UA-cam. Truly game changers. Means you can relax with confidence your legs ain’t coming out.

    Typical UK summer sunshine followed by typhoon conditions then back to heatwave in the space of 24hrs.. @AshOutdoorsUK I thought the rocks may had chaffed the guys, but appart from slightly bent poles, lack of sleep then a long drive home. I'm glad you posted this video to highlight how much the weather can change these days up in the mountains .

    and when its windy and raining wet runs UP under the hat thingy AND IN THROUGH THE VENTS ! Also bent a pole in a bad gust of wind .
    Got a 2 man Nallo now , much much superior door design zipps top and bottom , and both sides perfic . Vents at ground level and vestibule only not above inner . Also better in wind double or triple guyed withe bungee loops . The allak is now never uesed .

    Good to see you out in the mountains with the Allak 2 bud. This is also my main tent and would trust nothing less in and around the peaks. I also double pole my allak if I’m expecting some harsh weather, plus after getting caught out in similar weather on the summit of Pen Y Fan, I now always take four long sand/snow stakes which really hold well in softer ground, plus the Easton 9” pegs.. Look forward to Seeing you enjoy the Allak in better weather.. Take care...Cheers Mark 👍

    • @AshOutdoorsUK
      @AshOutdoorsUK  10 місяців тому +1

      Hi mark! Someone else mentioned the double pole thing… how does this work? Do you just put them into the sleeves and wrap the guy line around both sets of poles to keep them in place? Because obviously the clips will only go on one set of poles?
      And yea, I’ll definitely be taking my delta pegs next time 😅

    • @thewiltshirewomble
      @thewiltshirewomble 10 місяців тому +1

      @@AshOutdoorsUK hi Ash. The allak sleeves has been designed to take 2 poles. And you just clip alternately across the tent. I also keep half a dozen of those velcro cable ties and just velco the 2 poles together once clipped up. Probaly overkill, but they weigh nothing and i keep them in pocket inside the tent, so i always have them with me. As you’ll know the standard poles are 9mm and you can buy an upgraded 10mm set, but i went for double poling with an extra set of standard 9mm poles. That way i have full redundancy should a pole fail… which wouldn’t be the case if you only have a 10mm set up in the hills. And you can choose to take the extra set or not… hope this helps bud… cheers Mark

I was on my back for a few hours at one point with legs in the air acting as a structure inside the tent. Wasn't forecast either. Eventually the tent collapsed and I had to bail at 3am in the dark in high winds and heavy rain. It was a scary situation, but I knew I could make it down and made sure I packed up in advance. I had to tie the tent around my legs so it didn't fly away. These days I don't even bother if winds are forecast for 15+.

    This is the one problem I have with Hilleberg's tents, they're not freestanding. Which means this: If you don't do an expert job staking the tent out, guy lines etc (sometimes even if you do!)...... walls collapse. Wind blown rain gets through the vents. Bad things happen. For over $1,000 for this 2 person tent!? It should have been bomb proof, as advertised. They do have the strongest fabric (by FAR) and every tent is hand stitched but...... I just wish they offered more free-standing tent designs. I'd feel a lot better in high, high winds....

      Hello mate. Yes, you’re right. As I left the tent and took my bag out all the paged out guys flew out and the tent took off. The only thing saving me was the rocks on the remaining guys. What I was getting at was that I think most other tents I own would have broken in the winds. This is only a red label, the black labels poles are thicker. I should have brought my delta ground pegs, and I’ve learned from someone in the comments that you can actually double pole these tents. That’s what I was trying to do until the peg came out and blew the side in! 😅 I couldn’t sleep after that, I’m such a light sleeper as it is, I’ve learned through the comments that you can double pole these tents so I’ll be doing that next time out in these conditions 😅 and I’ll remember my delta pegs
      Thanks for watching mate

    You will remember that camp as one of your best. And come on Mate, you had a top rated very expensive tent so nothing bad was going to happen. Try it in a 20 quid Lidl special next time and guess what? You will be fine.

      I sure will lol! Yep, hated it at the time, definitely my most memorable now. Yeah I knew I’d be fine, was just so tired after the night before and then a 200 mile drive home 😫

    Close the vents?

    • @AshOutdoorsUK
      @AshOutdoorsUK  9 місяців тому

      They were closed. The hood of the tent covers them but the wind was so strong it was blowing the rain under it and saturated the venting areas and water breached them
      Pretty rough for it to be able to do that 😅

      So basically you’re saying you’ve watched 23 minutes of a 38 minute video and you think I’ve used old footage? 🤔 Why would I do that and not use the footage that you think is from previos trip in a separate video?? Oh yes, because it’s the first time I’ve used this tent, so there is no previous footage 😂🤣👏🏼 thanks for the watch and the comment, all helps the channel 👌🏼
