- Dr. Ajaz Anwar, a 72 year old painter, educator and social activist talks about how his art form became an act of conservation of a city's heritage becoming lost, and consequently how the art transformed into a protest against the destruction of heritage sites and culture of Lahore. Ajaz deems his life's work as a preservation of his childhood. Dr. Ajaz Anwar is a well-known artist known for his vibrant, dreamy water colour paintings that feature Lahore’s pre-partition buildings and heritage sites, amidst the hubbub of city life. A recipient of the President’s Pride of Performance Award in Painting, Dr. Ajaz Anwar’s pieces have been showcased at eminent galleries and exhibitions across the globe over the years.
Having retired as the Director of the Gallery at the National College of Arts (NCA), he currently leads the Lahore Conservation Society where he has laboured and lobbied to preserve Lahore’s cultural identity and heritage, which has become a personal crusade for him This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Bloch sb, let me ask you this. How much do you know about (this old man) Dr. Ajaz Anwar? Allow me to add to your knowledge. Dr. Ajaz Anwar has a Ph. D in Muslim Art and Architecture from Instanbul Technical University. He was sent to Rome by UN for further study in preservation of historical architectural monuments after his Doctorate. He decided to move back to Pakistan because he loves Pakistan. He concentrated on The City of Lahore because he is from that city. He is well traveled all over the world. He was awarded Pride of Performance by President Farooq Lughari. His paintings of old Lahore (in water color) are located all over the world. His paintings gets sold even before they are finished. Few years back, Interpol contacted him because a counterfeit painting of his (Dr, Ajaz Anwar) was intercepted, which was offered for sale for a large amount of money. He is an author of numerous books, including a book on the great Sadequin. He actively writes for news papers (read his editorials in The News every other week) and participate in radio and tv shows. He is a professor (retired from NCA Lahore). He also teach at Punjab University and Engineering University. List goes on and on and on...............................
