  • The small whips used by Native American mounted warriors often had large, imposing handles that seem to serve no purpose from a horse riding standpoint. They were however used as bludgeons when needed.

I'm native and I can say that these are like the strips on a sargeant's coat, just shows that you are a whipman and we're in charge of some of other warriors in your society.

Seems a lot like it could share the same purpose as the Coup Stick.

My understanding is that this is a multi-tool. The whip is primarily used on horses while riding, and maybe also to discipline fellow soldiers. During a battle the whip would be used to gain extra reach and basically supplementary length for the baton itself which would definitely be used as a truncheon. The mentality was that adding the whip didn’t take away from the club’s effectiveness as a club, and what it added was better than no extra reach at all.
I wonder, if you hit someone with the truncheon hard enough will the whip basically aftershock and also hit them extremely hard, due to the inertia?

I'd say the whip portion would be negligible in that scenario. Whips are poor weapons unless you really optimize the swing to contact right at the crescendo. And that's a long whip. With a really short one like this... and you're not hitting at the perfect 'whip' moment because you're (wisely) more concerned with clubbing. Can't imagine it'd be a real factor.

@@ObjectHistory oh I get you and I agree that I’m a fight it’s virtually nothing but I guess I’m saying sometimes it’s better to have almost nothing than to have nothing, in other words it’s better to be able to reach them with a very light tap than it is to not reach them at all. Maybe you can get in their face and obstruct their view or maybe just cause a tiny bit of pain. The way I see it is like fighting with a towel or maybe just a distraction and even just a nuisance. But I don’t see it being literally nothing. That’s all I’m saying. Negligible damage, but maybe the nuisance itself was actually the desire intent. To essentially harass the enemy!
Hey just a thought. Not meant to say you’re wrong about anything. Love your videos!
Particularly love the one that is thicker with the tacks.

@@davidgeldner2167 Oh yea, I get you. Across the eyes if you can manage it with the whip portion would certainly give you the chance for a serious follow up strike too.

@@ObjectHistory I get what you mean though. If you’re in clubbing range you’re not concerned whatsoever with the whip and whether it’s hitting them or not.

I’d never heard of these; very interesting. Doesn’t seem like it would be very effective as a whip being so short, as the energy that could be generated at the tip would be relative to its length, right? As a baton though I’m sure it would get the job done.

I completely agree about the dynamics, just bizzare. Would assume my book is now the only written source to preserve the knowledge of these as actual martial tools.

Object History I plan to order your book soon; Glad someone is recording this history. It’s super hard to find information about a lot of these archaic weapons. Of course, my friends are getting tired of me interjecting weapon trivia into normal conversation lol. Not sure why the interest isn’t higher really.

@@davidgeldner2167 Yes, them and 'loaded' whips... as quick, related tangents, but they're there.
