The new 5.0's are pretty quick, but they're def not fast. All the magazines have tested new 5.0's with the track PAC & 3.73 gears. None of us has tested a new 5.0 base with the 3.31 gears Manu trans until Feb 2013. Our best run with 3.31's in sealevel air was 5.1 0-60 & 13.02@110mph. I know, I work for one of those mags.
I would love to agree with you being a V8 lover myself, but if people can build up 1000 wheel HP civics, they can build up a Cobalt SS to beat a 5.0 as well. The '08 Cobalt SS Turbo ran a 13.9 @ 104 mph in the 1/4 mile bone stock burning rubber most of the way down the strip... Which is the reason for the 13.9 & that was in a magazine which are not the best drivers out there. The Cobalt would need a lot of mods to beat a stock 5.0 though. It's amazing how fast the new 5.0 is bone stock.
Actually it doesn't take more then a: intercooler upgrade, down pipe, CAI, and a really good tune23-27psi of boost vs stock of 16psi. That'll take you from 240-245 whp stock to 330-340fwhp/410wtq. Enough to run even with a very well driven 2011 GS Vett, and beat a stock 20011-2013 5.0 no prob.
Plus turbo SS is 2930lbs vs 3627 for 5.0.... With a simple tune on SS, and a Intercooler upgrade, crank hp goes from 260 to 335. Which is enough to equal a 420hp 2013 GT in weight-to-power ratio... The best way to have a fast 5.0 is an auto trans. The sticks in them are tire spinners which is no traction which ='s slow there's a reason the fastest 1/4 mi cars are autos other then being stronger. Think about it.
My only way to explain the video is the guy in the 5.0 let the Slobalt win for the purpose of the video... or the Slobalt asked the GT to start in 4th gear. A tuned GT can hit 11s.
How do you figure? With those mods, that cobalt could and probably is running as much or more whp/wtq then the mustang and it weighs much less... Don't get me wrong, the 5.0 is awesome, but a big turbo cobalt is a hwy monster.
No tune only GT has run 11's with oem tires, etc... Maybe with 2000' below sealevel DA, possibly... My old SS with the modds listed below ran 12.4@116mph., 5-6mph faster & 1/2 a sec quicker then a stock 5.0... I even beat a tune-only 5.0, he ran 12.56@115.33
