Abandoned Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon has a MAJOR issue...

- So as it turns out, this car needs a bit more than expected. I gave the buyer the option to back out and he did. I would have done the same to be honest.
Come with me as we discover the mess that was missed in the field!
Inquiries can go to info@deanofmachines.com

I am considering selling the parts from this car. but would prefer to sell it whole to someone who needs all the parts for a turbo swap.
Thanks!
Wonder if you could drop the engine/gearbox into an Amazon 🤔
Yes you can!
@@DeanofMachines well.....just a thought 😉
@@itsmephil2255 There are a lot of possibilities here. Time is the one thing that escapes me currently.
@@DeanofMachines right...we all need to head to yours to give you a hand 👍
@@itsmephil2255 The thought is appreciated!
There are new floor pans to buy. A couple of evenings with the weld and the angle grinder and they're done. You save it from the forest, now you have to make sure to save it from the scrapyard too. Come on, it's going to be fun 😁
I didnt know you could get 740 floor metal anywhere
In sweden someone would have fixed this car.
jode, dedär är inte världens grej direkt
I believe it. For me its a great parts car.
Some 17 year old in Sweden would’ve turned this car into a drift missile
I thought itd be a fun missle.
Pah! That’s minor surface rust here in England 🏴! 🤣
A little spray foam, itll be fine
The Water from the inside could not escape and slowly eats through the floor. At least the frame is solid. With some new floor metal the car is still a good one. But I can image how disappointed you are.
Greetings from Germany and thx for the awesome videos
Its the sad reality behind these cars. Window and sunroof seals just leak like crazy.
Hey Dean! Thanks for the video. Hope someone will save it or use for parts. It's still in better shape than most 740 in Europe😂
Its incredible isnt it? It seems soo good!
Bummer Dean ! Hopefully some one else can fix it ! Or use it as a parts car! 👍🏻👍🏻🆙 like always!
If anything its a turbo motor!
And the wheels, I like the mesh.
They are the best wheels
That sucks!
Mine was exactly the same when I got it. Off the road and sitting for years, the sunroof started leaking and filled the rear footwell with water which rusted the floor out. Trouble is on these cars they have thick carpet with thick sponge underlay so by the time you can see the water the underlay’s absolutely soaked and full of water. The sponge underlay just holds the wet against the floor and rots it away.
I made a new floor section for mine and welded it in. Had to rebuild the bottom edges of the seat mount too. It’s more time consuming than difficult.
I like my car though so it was worth doing in my eyes!
Keep up the good work!👍
Thanks Dan!
I've mothballed it for now though it is listed for sale. I'm still pulling cars from the ladies place, if one ends up being a candidate for sheet metal donor, it might get fixed!
I appreciate your honesty and character here. Too many others would try to pass the car off as normal than tell the disgruntled buyer tough 💩! Sorry Dean.
No reason to mislead someone! Ive been on the receiving end too many times.
That's a damn shame. Lots of clean body panels and a turbo powertrain I'm sure will live on though.
Its savable but i dont have the time for it.
If you did a RHD swap then you'd have drivers floors again.
I love it! Ill get right to it.
That is not a big problem. A day welding and done
Around here where rust free cars are easy to come by, this is quite the problem.
Well that does suck! Usually these cars are exceptionally rust resistant but in the 80s that was a big problem for these cars.
Yeah it seems to be a constant problem.
As someone with a plasma cutter and a welder, I would blast it out of a donor car and paste it back in. Turbo wagons are hard to find these days. Most of these bricks are a labor of love.
Have donor car available and welder/plasma cutter but I do not have the interest in putting the time into this car. 242 turbo needs as much work if not more!
@@DeanofMachines Good point. The 242 needs to be the track weapon already.
Ah come on Dean. Weld a few bits of fresh steel, it will be as good as new, even better. It's only the floor and those turbo 740's were loved. Don't give up on the old girl yet.
They may be loved, but I have too many other more pressing projects currently.
Yeah, so do I. I hope you find a good home for the turbo.@@DeanofMachines
@@mayflowerlash11 If things change, maybe it'll get a floor!
A couple road signs, license plates and a box of self tappers and it'd be gooder than new! 😂 Such a shame it's rotten underneath... it looks so good on the outside. 😢
Good as new!
Hi Dean. Fred Flintstone would be proud of that 740.
Hes more than welcome to come buy it lol
We had much worse cars when I was young. Bought a 240 with chipboard as a floor, it turned out when we jacked up the car 😂
Thats a really exciting way to find out!
Looks like how my 245Ti was. That makes me think that the rack has been leaking for some time. Since the frame rails are decent, and the rest of the floor's good, I bet it's been rusting from the inside out. Remember Ken's (RIP) term for roof racks... "Rust From Above".
I was thinking the same thing. That reminds me, I have a video to make about Ken
@@DeanofMachines Yeah, three of the 245s we've owned had racks on them. Two had some rust in the driver's floor area. The third, not sure why it remained rust-free, but I suspect that the NM weather for the first three years of its life, plus being garaged/carported most of the time it was up here helped. Cool. Will be looking out for it.
Most disappointing revelation Dean, you cant save them all unfortunately!
Very true. This one could be saved if someone had the funding
Aw bummer. Fixing it would make for good content but I wouldn't even know where to start. I could use some of the parts if you decide to part it out.
I could do the work but have other cars with needs. Would also need to buy a parts car
Been there done that. Had an 740 -85 that was rust free exept right there, it a common place but mostly on car the cars with double fuel pumps and i would guess that has that because i saw the blue/green injectors and that usually means the higher HP model. The wet carpet is a killer on all volvos, they are only galvanised on the outside and only up half the door until later -88 models
Thats a very interesting observation. It is a dual pump car. I wonder if theres any truth to that being part of the cause.
@@DeanofMachines I'm not sure but a lot of the 740s I own had double pumps and started to rust around there. I have owned over 20 of them. Mostly I think it's the lack of rust protection on the inside that kills them and with some extra bolts sticking through the floor it doesn't seems to far off
@@timwikblad6119 To me it looks like it started at the rear seam of the front seat mount.
@@DeanofMachines okey that's sad to see the damage it had no matter where it started.
Its worth saving. Fix The floor piece
Just need time and money!
Argh dang it man! Thats a real shame, the arches, sills and even the door bottoms look mint, its like a window was left open....or a feckkin sunroof!
Maybe someones got the time to save it or it'll help others live on...or someone will buy it just for the grill! 😆
Cheers buddy, hope you're doing ok 🤘
I think the sunroof and the windshield seal are equally responsible. If I didn’t have a 9-5 to worry about I could probably make it happen.
@@DeanofMachines man I hate sunroofs, the stupid reason my 940 has no carpet in the driver's foot well and a nice little paddling pool for my feet! 🤣
Well hopefully one day buddy fixing old Volvo's and filming it could be your 9-5!
Thanks as always for the stellar brick content ❤️🤘
If you can weld, no problem!
I could fix it, time is the issue with this one.
I had a 86 740tic that I had to change the driver side floor on and rear fenders. Find a part car and cut it. Makes the job so much easier and will look good.
We have parts cars available. But time is the concern
I just welded some new floor boards into an Amazon. It was something I enjoyed, and suspect someone could do the same for this sad Volvo. Stupid of the prior owner to let water sit in the car like that, but I guess you could blame it on dementia. Bummer it's not what you thought it was when you bought it.
I think this car had water issues before the gent even ended up with it. Sitting longer didnt help im sure.
A Volvo car... you can say that until 2005, these cars have terrible waterproofing problems, even in the 940, rain would get into the trunk. Part of the vehicle's base is also 100% iron. Without a mixture of metals like today. That's why rust is everywhere.
Its amazing how badly they can rust from the inside. Its the major downfall
Weld in some new floor pans. It’s a cool car.
If the car were in better all around shape I might consider it.
I've seen worse than that. Recovering it would be a nice welding tutorial. Just an idea :)
I agree. It might be a good video but I would need to source the metal for it and do the work. I have other projects to concentrate on currently
If i was a 740 series guy and had more money id absolutely fix that, some time with a welder and some flat stock is nothin!
All you need is time!
When do we get some Amazon wagon videos? I have one and love every time we see it in the background!
Soon as I stop trying to fix rusty silver 740s!
@@DeanofMachines you know the wagon deserves the love!
I changed the whole floor once in a 745 86 I hade many years ago😂 they can get really bad.
How long did it take you? Its a massive project!
@@DeanofMachines cant remember, did it in the winter without heat in my garage, so the paint would not dry😁but maybe 1 week, it was a Daily driver, 745 86 carburettor. But with leather and ac, not so common here in sweden, should have kept it.
you dont need a floor or a engine now, flintstones that thing !🤣
They would love it!
Wow if we could find this in the uk we would be happy. Wish I could come get the old girl… have you seen the 244 on my channel now that’s rough 🤣 also this must be the first video where I haven’t heard the lawn mower in the background 🤣
I filmed it quickly lol. I have seen the rusty 244. If these car were worth more here there would be folks all over it!
@@DeanofMachines yea fully agree sometimes the value isn’t there. It just takes someone mad to do these things 🤣
Perhaps David Bello might have some suggestions for this car!
He might want to weld some floors in it!
Where I live, its easy to find rust free cars for cheap. If this 740 was running and driving it MIGHT sell for $3000 usd
weld a new piece and keep the car going, alternatevely take all of the good panels off like the doors, hood, rocker panel
I have to store it all somewhere.
I appreciate it’s a massive task, but could you build a rotisserie and take your time in building it section by section?
You are right. It could be done but I have other cars that are ahead of the line unfortunately.
@@DeanofMachines of course, thank you for your reply. I just wish I had such a pragmatic approach to the three projects in my back yard. Thank you for the excellent content.
@@rearwingnoire27 Thanks for for love and support! I will say this, the car is now in storage but listed for sale if someone really wanted to save it. I have more cars coming out of the lady's property(if you saw the 14 Volvos video) so you never know! One of the 740/940 she has might have the same sheet metal and we can cut a floor pan out to save the car.
I am facing a similar situation on the passenger side of my 164. Hoping I can burn in some sections of 240 floor. Starting to feel the regret😂
It would be cool to save this one. The rest of the car is incredibly solid
The floor is in a bad way
This car was sold to someone for the turbo bits!
Nice and interesting video as always !!! 700 series are not in my opinion, desireable model... This one obviously is gone way to far for worth repairing... Maybe good for parts but who wants 740 series parts....zat iz ze question...
Im with you. We currently own 9 or 10 240s in various condition. A rusty 740 is not high on my list of priorities.
They're the overhead cam version of the 140 series. The 140s became donor cars for the Amazon/PV series owners. 700 series cars are typically donors for the 200 series cars. Case in point, the engine in my 242 is a B23FT from an '84 760.
That one has less rust than my 740tic i have. 😂 But i will make it a drag car so i dont care. But keep up the good work with more volvo content for us 👌
Let me know if you want parts!
Such a shame it really is a beautiful volvo.
It really is. The car could be saved if someone tried.
I blame the sunroof.
That or windshield seal
Or the rack. Seals and well nuts dry out, which start leaking. Most roof rack 245s will have the same kind of rust after a few years.
@@john242ti That's true. I'm unfamiliar with the 740 of this era. It looks like the rack is the same as 240s.
@@DeanofMachines It's basically the same as the 1993 240 rack. A little shorter than the 1983-92 240 rack. There is an '86-'88 745GLE on CL in California that has a 240 rack on it. Front legs are just behind the sunroof panel. Both rack setups use the same mounting hardware, so the ACE hardware plugs and grommets work fine for plugging up the holes. You just need eight, instead of twelve of each.
Those headlights are already worth 1000€
Why so much?
@@DeanofMachines because in sweden and finland everybody wants them and there is not alot of those USA style headlight available for 740, 1000€ is normal prize for them here finland
Bummer
Its stuffed in storage now. Maybe itll get saved another day.
Oh no you dont scrap it, ship it to me in Sweden and I will fix it.
Its just as easy as sending money and setting up shipping!
I think it's totally fixable. I repaired worse than this in the past.
Anything is fixable with time and money!
Cruise control parts is something I’m interested in if you can ship to Sweden
Or from a 940 turbo works too
I will keep that in mind if I part the car.
Well shit...
Thats exactly what I said.
ouch💀
Rip 745 turbo
Personally i would have fixed that, not hard to fix and will get a great car
Still have it. Its in storage now while other projects happen
I feel like you can still use the whole Buffalo. The powertrain looks like a candidate for rehoming into something older.
This is a great lesson in going the extra mile and checking all the things.
It’ll be great parts for someone. Its just a matter of putting it somewhere while I work on the other projects.
Let me get that grill and the headlights bro
Make an offer!
@@DeanofMachineswhere can I contact you to further discuss
Not that bad, an hour in the garage
I dont know that I could fix this nicely in just one hour. I dont want to rush fix it.
What?? Just weld it up.. 3 ours...tops.
The prep work would take longer than that, finding a donor, cutting the floor, fitting new. It might be 3 hours of welding if you only count the welding.
Thats not that bad, its just floor,, on 2 spots, my old 86' 744 had rust issues every year, even though i dipped the damn thing in coating each time LOL
It couldve been worse thats for sure!!
Make a trailer out of it
Itd be a sick trailer!
Oof.
Offf da may!
