  • Will it start, run and drive home? We attempt to rescue a 1992 Volvo 940 B230FT auto turbo brick from the side of a Berlin street where it has been sitting for 1 year after overheating.
    At the moment Involvo'd is funded by ad revenue, some very generous Patrons and a dishwashing job. If you want to support the channel (and get some perks, ie early access to videos, behind the scenes pictures etc, here's a link;

A proper service , but you can have a head gasket issue, with a genuine clean up inside, water, oil etc. The automatic is no problem, new oil and filter it would run ok again. Be sure that you get the right thermostate that opens up at the right degree. Cant wait for next episode. Thumbs up and to Mrs Volvo to hehe

Yes, plenty of sympathy for the stress of trying to drive a car overheating, etc in traffic! traffic is a killer! these cars need to retire in the countryside! • @jfv65
    @jfv65 2 роки тому +18

    A thermostat is relatively cheap. So just for peace of mind i'd toss in a new one.
    Nice score, it is a true turbo (155hp) (not a 940lpt, those are 135hp) the 940's have a lot more galvanised body parts so there should be way less rust compared to the 740. As for not finding D. That might be caused by a low ATF level. When the gbox warms up the ATF expands to the point where D might work fine. It could also just be caused by lack of use ( same for the brakes.)
    You also changed the battery. This means that the LH2.4 ECU has to relearn it's fine calibrations ( short term fuel trim) so the engine should run better and better as it relearns.

    • @Involvod
      @Involvod  2 роки тому +6

      Definitely! It's the 2.3 too, so 165! Really lucky on this one. I can't believe how little rust there is, so so nice after the recent cars.. well you've seen them 😅
      Thanks for the tips, I didn't consider that with the battery, I might switch batteries around less often now 😄

    • @Bassalicious
      @Bassalicious 2 роки тому +4

      I didn't know the LH2.4 had learning algorithms, that's really good to know, thanks.

    • @jfv65
      @jfv65 2 роки тому +3

      @@Bassalicious yes, the lh2.4 system has
      A. a base fuel mapping which is hard coded into an EPROM (electronic programmable read only memory),
      B. a long term fuel trim which is 'learned' based on lambda sensor input, air mass meter input and engine temp sensor input which is also written in a memory but which gets lost when you disconnect battery voltage. (Hence the relearning thing after the battery has been disconnected)
      C. a short term fuel trim which is derived from closed loop running. The realtime lambda, engine temp, AMM sensor signals provide the input for that.
      A. B. and C. ensure that the engine runs good regardless of fuel quality, elevation changes, ambient temperatures.
      On top of this LH2.4 system the car also has a EZK module that provides the dynamic(!) ignition timing.
      It uses the crank position sensor and a knock-out sensor as input. It works like a feedback loop. It tries to continually advance the ignition timing until the knock sensor senses knock. Then the EZK pulls out a few (3?) degrees of advance until there is no more knocking after which the loop starts again trying to advance. But the EZK also uses a hardcoded ignition base map in an EPROM
      Some EZK'S can also be re-mapped for tuning purposes.

    • @Bassalicious
      @Bassalicious 2 роки тому +3

      @@jfv65 That's some really good info, thanks a lot!
      I knew about the EZK - pins 18 and 19 even give you an opportunity to offset the base map by -3° to +6° I believe it was.
      Thinking about it it does makes sense they used volatile memory but I definitely wouldn't have thought to dis- and reconnect the battery after troubleshooting the fuel injection system.

    • @Involvod
      @Involvod  2 роки тому

    12:02. When I'd first gotten (three-plus years ago now) my 1970 142S it did not have a working gas gauge, and it was a few weeks until I'd received all of the parts to effect a repair. I knew approximately how much fuel I had by my trip odometer.
    One Friday, sitting at a traffic light with cars on all sides (It is a large one, 3 lanes each way of a four-way intersection) Then one SU carb went dry, followed by its twin moments later. I was fully socked in and the light changes.

    Nice job getting it home. Oh I know exactly how you feel about driving a flaky car with nowhere to stop!!! I had the exact same silver 940 turbo wagon for a few years before my 240. My turbo coolant line wore out which caused the car to over heat and I had to get a new head gasket and have the head machined. Also, the cabin heat diverter valve is known to fail, so watch that. Is this another Volvo with a outside temperature gauge? Is this a common option over there?

    Having driven a manual 740 Turbo and now owning an automatic 740 Turbo, I feel the auto is better suited to the turbo set-up / driving dynamics of the car. The manuals are great on the N/A cars when you need to get as much out of the engine as possible.

And the heater will blow really hot (that's why people would use them) According to the manual for my 740, it isn't considered to be overheating until "consistently in the red" but I'd still run a cooler thermostat lol

    The thermostat may be bent, I get that a lot in the V70s, but with all the other stuff like leaking waterpump and pure water in the tank it'll probably be a combination. From here it looks like the car is worth going through the whole system.

    Beautiful new project! This video was a fun surprise. I’m anxious to see the following videos for this one, especially since my first and so far only Volvo is a 940 Turbo Estate. 😃
    Since the overheating seemed to straighten out as soon as you took out the thermostat I’d say it’s not working right. The stumbling and dying could possibly be the MAP sensor…..? I’ve had a few cars with that exact same behavior that turned out to be dirty or bad MAP sensors. 😉
    Best of luck with her!

    The answer to your question is: if you don't know when the thermostat was changed, then it's time to change it.
    The issue with the transmission not going into D may be due to worn shifter linkage bushings. I think there's 3 of them? Or, the shifter linkage may require adjustment for proper engagement.

  • @lordracula2461
    @lordracula2461 2 роки тому +2

    Awesome buy!!! I had the opposite problem with my thermostat when i got my v40 estate, it was stuck wide open and the previous owners just kept driving it ice cold anyway, the engine developed some serious sludge and it took a lot of engine flushes and filter changes before it ran reliably.
    Your thermostat there must've been stuck shut causing the coolant to not circulate properly

    • @Involvod
      @Involvod  2 роки тому

      Thanks! Yours must have been driven cold for a long time, the thermostat was stuck open on Lili the 240 for a long time I think, especially judging by the extreme piston slap, but still a clean engine luckily

    Haha yes I know that episode that Derek did 🤣 he is soooo chilled. Love love love the 940 - this is a really nice one!! She needed rescuing. Sad to think someone has just given up like that on this old girl. The thermostat doesn’t look happy and if the car was staying cool while driving then it’s definitely the culprit.

      Yes, I saw that video where Derek got into trouble in the automatic car wash. I had a Derek moment myself 5 years ago when my '90 740 GL wouldn't restart in the automatic car wash. I had to get out and push it by hand through the blower/dryer at the end. I could barely move it against the high speed wind that was coming out of that darn thing! I had no choice but to push it out right away because there was a truck coming up behind me! As I was trying to push it I looked up and saw that it was all being captured by their camera surveillance system. Ouch! Lol

    Great SCORE! Don't know what you paid but that is a really nice example of the last of the redblocks. As you know, there's only a few things that cause overheating - thermostat, water pump, clogged radiator, or malfunctioning temperature compensation board (that was my issue in my 92). Hi, Canada here. My favourite Volvo wagon (estate). I'd replace the thermostat after a coolant flush and also treat the automatic to new ATF. I was fortunate to order a 1986 745 Turbo, manual with overdrive and rear limited slip diff. A set of Hakkapeliitta tires and it was pretty much unstoppable in winter. If Volvo could bring back one (1) car that would be my choice. Always envious of the European headlights.

    Добро пожаловать в секту турбокирпичей товарищ вольводрайвер!) Судя по двухместному дивану и электронастройке часов(было только с 88 года((760 рестайлинг)) по 91й) у тебя 945 91 года производства, но 92 модельный, на моей 945 92 года осени уже часы механические и кожаный трехместный диван. Очень странно что на раннем 230FT стоит турбинка митцубиши с 95 года от более поздних версий турбомоторов 230FK и 230GK, вместо заводских турбин Гаретт Эирсерч. Так же странно что автомат у тебя японский AW-71 Aisin ведь на европу шли немецкие ZF, на моем американце 92 года точно такой же автомат, но он шел не на европейский рынок, возможно турбина и автомат стоят с более поздней версии.
    По термостату, возможно помпа с нарушенной(может на воде ездили и общий простой машины) циркуляцией или где то забит патрубок или канал в гбц, может стоит промыть основной радиатор - перегревы красному блоку не так страшны как алюминиевым моторам но все же 4й цилиндр ты пожешь перегреть с ухудшенной циркуляцией.

I’d chuck in a new thermostat and do a coolant system flush and add the proper stuff. Wont cost a fortune and while it may not solve all the problems, it’ll give you a sound basis to troubleshoot further. (Disclaimer: I’m just a garage tinkerer. This does not constitute proper mechanical advice!) I just hope the auto box isn’t terminal.
