As a former KSK officer i can tell that the video material seen here is really just a small picture (the kindergarten stuff) of the whole procedure. But for some good reasons they aren’t allowed to film the hard stuff. It’s not fun at all not even fun to watch. Edit: And don’t underestimate the mental tests I’m definitely not a stupid person but i almost failed at them. I guess it’s unnecessary to say but when you’ve survived the hell week you aren’t a KSK it’s just means the training to become a KSK begins you can still fail at any time and can be classified as unqualified.
That question "Are you physically and mentally ready for that selection" is something they do that nobody can complain while that selection. It's a question before a lot of tests in the german army.
Maybe you missed it, but the guy saying "I imangined it beeing harder." was the one that nearly didn't make the log carrying in the end and lagged behind. That is why they were so harsh on him.
Hello Sir :) I have been in the KSK for 8 years. The points that you mention are totally right especially with motivation during the stress tests. You basically see people that did the same in front of you that are your instructors. They dont need yelling they dont need anything to motivate you. They look at you. You know they did it and then you know you can do it. To be fair there are certain parts that they did not show in this documentary for the public to see. And it is not always quiet. You know what I mean. Love your professional point of view. And Thank you for your service. When we needed you in Afgahnistan you were always there. Especially with your Helicopters. I remember a few close calls that we would not have gotten out of with way more casualties. Awesome partners in combat.
That general at the end was shocked because it was just the entry test. 2 years of training ahead of that recruit so he was right to call the recruit out on his big mouth.
In Finland at Uusimaa brigade (Uudenmaan prikaati) we have this thing called the beret march, it is about 80km split in 2 days, and there are several tasks to do, for example to cross a body of water, a running march of about 6-7 km, cbrn threats etc. If one completes this he/she gets to carry Uusimaa brigade`s green beret if all the other requirements are met. The green beret for us is the symbol of coastal jaegers.
@Eff dees nee da musste mal ABC Alarm rufen. Hat n Kumpel während seiner Grundausbildung gemacht. Der Oberfeldwebel fand es so richtig zum schreien „Masken auf und Marsch Marsch!“
Our professors ask us before every exam if we are physically and mentally prepared and we just have to sit at a table for 2 hours and write stuff on paper, so that question alone doesn't really seem menacing to me xD
Good point! Yes, I´ve been asked that before every major exam (and I didn´t even join the army, ever), so on the one hand, you know "Ok, now we´re getting serious, if I say "yes" now, I am comitted, and its all up to me". On the other hand: We in germany are so used to this legally required question before any official exams, that it´s probably no longer working as a mindgame on us, or even be menacing, more like a "ok, here we go"-signal. It´s the signal that this situation from now on has official significance and legal ramifications, and you just waved all your excuses good bye.
Especially now in the pandemic we also need to sign a paper that states that we don't suffer from any respiratory symptoms and we have to give contact information like address email and phone number. In addition to the regular formalities.
The question is necessary because you can argue that you weren't of sound mind and body when you took the test, and could have the results invalidated along with a doctor's note.
in Austria, long time ago, we had something similar just for sub officer training, 120km within 2 days and 3 days of combat exercise before that. it was called internally the psycho march. it is gone now for decades, but this was similar, not in every aspect, but in a lot of them. no sleep, task, marching with heavy equipment, etc. a few things your learned during this time: in a team you can walk and sleep at the same time, your body can take more than you have imagine, discipline, willpower and even in the worsed case, teamplay to the end. even i had to undergo this training 3 times, one time i failed because of sickness, one time because of injury and at the 3rd time, we all gave us a promise, all or none. That promise kept us going, from long training nights, over many different task, river crossing and marching back into the military installation with a song. well after this trip, i slept nearly 2 days without a break ;)
Then the KSK guys end in prison for braking the the law and constitution of Germany. There where in the past violations done by the BW in preparation and education curses for foreign country missions, mainly POW and torture. The BW will not show this, but from the reports there where very sadistic measure taken to inflict extreme pain to the participants. Maybe good preparation and hardening of the troops but for a nation of the 1st world threatening its own citizens, even if your a uniform you are still a citizen of said country, its unacceptable. The BW is doing what it has to do and thankfully unlike the US they are not required to tell everything to the media.

The question "are you mentally and physically capable and ready to do xyz" is actually pretty common in the Bundeswehr. I think there's a rule stating that you have to ask that before any major exercise. Not everybody does it that formal but you hear it every now and then.
@@Cedrikkkk I heard it now and then, but not always, in my time with the bundeswehr and throughout my university years. I always perceived it as some sort of common and polite reassurance that the soldiers and students feel well to do a certain task rather than a mandatory question. As far as i know it's just a subtle way to give everyone a last chance to solve minor issues or (in the worst case) withdraw without too much hassle before heading into the tasks ahead.
I think you are wrong about the comment to „mental games“ at 3:50. In my opinion it is more a legal thing as we also ask the exactly same questions to people for their final exam after their apprenticeship - just to make they cant take legal steps if they fail. If they don’t feel in the position to go for this, it does not count as a fail, but you will not participate this time of course.
Not necessarily wrong i would say as you can be sure that each apprentice had to sign written consent before. A verbal consent like that sure does not imply any legal binding
this was worthwhile to watch. Thank you for your honest and respectful commentary on our german elites. Take my sub and keep up the good work. And to all the attendants out there: hang on!!
The title is misleading and "clickbait"... The video shows the Bundeswehr Wellness-Week to relax and regenerate after the Hell-Week! ☝😑 KSK fun and play time!!! 😄😄
Like you said, you play a mental war with yourself in these situations but you can get through almost anything if you have enough determination. That's one of the most important things I learned in the military
I was really surprised when they said "Back to the barracks in Calw". That's actually my hometown. I know someone there who's been through all this and all of this is very accurate. There were some practices they didn't show in there which are even more demanding than what was shown. Really intense.
We also got that asked in every different typ of School. And because i forgot how to translate those probably imma just say Hauptschule, Realschule und Gymnasium.
13:57 for me it´s the opposite. When there are many people giving up, it gives me extra motivation because I feel like I can be even prouder when succeeding
one thing what inspired me all the time back in my army days is, that our dudes wich commands us, went trough the same shit like us. Testing your mental health was a key everytime when you did a an "education" military wise. Mental health was and is still the most important thing. I had some dude in our company which wasnt strong enough, he flipped out after he got a weapon with ammunition... thats one thing i hoefully will never see again
As an ex soldier of 17 years, and also one who did the British Commando training, I can absolutely confirm that 80% of this is mind over matter, as long as you‘re fit from the get go 💪
I, an old German Oma, was just asking myself why I am reading the comments on such a "guy" video. I needed a new joke, and you gave it to me. Danke.. (I used to teach English and German)
"what a mustache" ... brigadier general Ammon, former commander of the KSK... loads of respect to the KSK, I do live about 20min outside their base. However, they did never invite me for a cup of coffee, or even a beer.... semper paratus
It's actually quite common in Germany to ask about the candidate feeling physically and mentally able (for any kind of exam). It's more or less to make sure no one can say he/she was unfairly treated. So this probably is no mindgame.
It was interesting to see/hear your comments. You seem to be a smart and professional person. Thanks for this interesting video. Greets from Bavaria, Germany
Man reminds me of when i was in the Kings Royal guard in Sweden Got extremly sick just a few days before our own hell week final test so i was disqualified, but was still a very interesting time
Can confirm that asking „Are you physically and mentally prepared for this?“ is very common here in Germany. I got asked this on my wedding from the Priest.
They don't say any details on 'prisoner' bit, but I'm pretty sure the interrogations will involve waterboarding, at the least. 18:35 The guy says before his 'capture' it's wasn't too bad, BUT he hadn't counted on the 'prisoner' (last) phase. Great content again!
@@prekatori I think even Germany will waterboard/humiliate/psychologically torture their special forces.... It's perfectly legal to do if the participants are willing. And guess what! If your not willing, your not special forces material and you're out anyway. Hell even journalists have been waterboarded to show what it's like. Not nice, but that's kinda the point.
I'm German and it felt so funny to hear them ask whether the applicants feel mentally and physically ready for the challenge with the very same words that we were always asked right before exams at uni. ^^ you can pass uni without being emotionally ready, but this... Not so much :)
Als ich noch bei den fallschirmjägern war habe ich auch mit leuten die , die ksk aufnahmeprüfung absolvieren wollten trainiert , verdammt harte hunde sind das.
What was left out in this video is the moments of soldiers collapsing. This is not just about your strength of will. This is about weeding out the soldiers with inadequate genes. You have to have the will AND the right combination of physical attributes to make it through this kind of training. Plenty of them injure themselves, breaking bones, spraining ankles, necks, walking until they literally drop unconscious. Not everyBODY has the capacity to do this, literally. They want to see who has the racecar body. Your average Honda Civic hasn't got a prayer.
The „physically and mentally prepared“ question is just a legal thing. I think you only have one try for this hell week. So this question makes sure you cannot come up with excuses when you fail to get a second try. Germans get this asked all the time. Driving test, final exams etc.
The question for the healthy constitution is pretty normal before tests in germany. Im a german student and were asks literaly the same question before my exam yesterday ^^
I was a supporter from the KSK in Calw near stuttgart. And i saw this Training a lot of times where Big as a mountain gave up. There is 1-20 / 100 who survives the First week there. And then the Training Starts. In the End there are 1-3 soldiers That can call himselves „Commando“
Funny thing is this is like 3 villages away from me and I have seen some men running up the hill with this wooden thing already so and I know the path were theyre walking and stuff like that lol
Nice Video! Greetings from Austria, we have the Jagdkommando here as our specialforces, and they also have something like a hell week if I'm not wrong!
The question wether u feel mentally and physically able to complete this is asked before every test in germany🤣 not just in the military that’s just a law here.
@@donar7724 Of course the question holds another weight if you get asked that from a guy with a balaclava wearing uniform while you're having a 25kg backpacks on than you're math teacher for one of the three exams you have to take per semester. :D Would be weird if you think the question is equally important both times.
Echt? Ich werde das nie gefragt nur manchmal so ,,bereit?” aber vielleicht ist das in Bayern bisschen anders (Rlly? I’m never asked that but maybe it’s different in Bavaria)
Nice to hear people are still playing "Kim's Game" - a highly recommendable training exercise for both observation and memory, named after Rudyard Kipling's novel "Kim" which features the exercise. Also a highly recommendable read.
This question if you are healthy and mentally ready is just complete standard. Every exam in university has this question. I think it is more about avoiding legal discussions than about building pressure.

Ex German soldier here. The question at the beginning of the hell week about the physical and mental stability of the soldiers is not a psycho trick. It's cause every soldier has to agree that he is mental and physical fit before a hard training so the army cannot be sued from a soldier in case that he was forced to do hard things in a bad health condition.
The same question will be asked before every shooting training too.

As a former KSK officer i can tell that the video material seen here is really just a small picture (the kindergarten stuff) of the whole procedure.
But for some good reasons they aren’t allowed to film the hard stuff.
It’s not fun at all not even fun to watch.
Edit:
And don’t underestimate the mental tests I’m definitely not a stupid person but i almost failed at them.
I guess it’s unnecessary to say but when you’ve survived the hell week you aren’t a KSK it’s just means the training to become a KSK begins you can still fail at any time and can be classified as unqualified.
So if i can do the hell week but fail the mental test am i gone pass through or am i gone fail ?
Can you give an idea of what those mental tests are about? Just math?

Yep, actually had to sign a form confirming that before every exam
In Finland at Uusimaa brigade (Uudenmaan prikaati) we have this thing called the beret march, it is about 80km split in 2 days, and there are several tasks to do, for example to cross a body of water, a running march of about 6-7 km, cbrn threats etc. If one completes this he/she gets to carry Uusimaa brigade`s green beret if all the other requirements are met. The green beret for us is the symbol of coastal jaegers.

Our professors ask us before every exam if we are physically and mentally prepared and we just have to sit at a table for 2 hours and write stuff on paper, so that question alone doesn't really seem menacing to me xD
Really?
I've never been asked that during my entire bachelor program.
Interesting. At our University (Bavaria) they ask us this question Everytime, so no one can complain about being sick and so on during the exam.
The question is necessary because you can argue that you weren't of sound mind and body when you took the test, and could have the results invalidated along with a doctor's note.
highest level of respect to people who get through stuff like this
i am just a regular IT guy and only could imagine how hard it would be
in Austria, long time ago, we had something similar just for sub officer training, 120km within 2 days and 3 days of combat exercise before that. it was called internally the psycho march. it is gone now for decades, but this was similar, not in every aspect, but in a lot of them. no sleep, task, marching with heavy equipment, etc.
a few things your learned during this time: in a team you can walk and sleep at the same time, your body can take more than you have imagine, discipline, willpower and even in the worsed case, teamplay to the end. even i had to undergo this training 3 times, one time i failed because of sickness, one time because of injury and at the 3rd time, we all gave us a promise, all or none. That promise kept us going, from long training nights, over many different task, river crossing and marching back into the military installation with a song.
well after this trip, i slept nearly 2 days without a break ;)
Too bad they weren't allowed to film the hardest and most interesting part.

Since I hear this before all of my exams in university it has to be some sort of law here in Germany.
It also prevents people to claim some kind of medical problem afterwards if they fail.
@@Cedrikkkk I heard it now and then, but not always, in my time with the bundeswehr and throughout my university years. I always perceived it as some sort of common and polite reassurance that the soldiers and students feel well to do a certain task rather than a mandatory question.
As far as i know it's just a subtle way to give everyone a last chance to solve minor issues or (in the worst case) withdraw without too much hassle before heading into the tasks ahead.
luckys1evin Okay then it seems to be something special for our university, I never had an exam where this question hasn’t come up :D
Former german airforce instructor here, yep, we have to ask this.
Exactly that! In germany you get that asked even when you're about to do your driving license.
Not necessarily wrong i would say as you can be sure that each apprentice had to sign written consent before. A verbal consent like that sure does not imply any legal binding
I was even asked in exams during my apprenticeship, if we were at good health and felt able to take that exam.
As a swede ( with 3 years in service, 1 year abroad) working alot in Germany this was great!

3:04 the teachers un germany ask you that same exact question when you're about to write finals as well, just sayin.
I think that this question is a legal disclaimer, so no participant can later claim to not have been fit and having failed because of that.
So true :-D But I think the teachers of the new generation dont do it anymore. Just the older older ones with that special charme.
Bei Gandalfs Bart they do Till this day
Like you said, you play a mental war with yourself in these situations but you can get through almost anything if you have enough determination. That's one of the most important things I learned in the military
I was really surprised when they said "Back to the barracks in Calw". That's actually my hometown. I know someone there who's been through all this and all of this is very accurate. There were some practices they didn't show in there which are even more demanding than what was shown. Really intense.
The question if you feel mentally and physically good enough to take part, is also asked before every test a german university.
Must depend on the uni.
On my UAS they dont ask that
We got asked that at the last exam of Highschool in Germany lol
We also got that asked in every different typ of School. And because i forgot how to translate those probably imma just say Hauptschule, Realschule und Gymnasium.

The Bundeswehr has a cool playlist called "SURVIVAL - 7 Offiziere. Eine Mission.". It is very interesting.
