San Francisco's (Almost) Forgotten All-Girl Band: The Ace of Cups 🎵 | KQED Arts

- Amidst the cultural revolution of late-'60s San Francisco, five women reimagined the “girl band” in drastic fashion - which might be why you haven't heard of them. With original songs that reflected their circumstances, the Ace of Cups played with groups like The Band, Jefferson Airplane, and even Jimi Hendrix, an avowed fan.
The Haight-Ashbury of 1967 was a place of endless possibility: new ways of living, an influx of ideas, and political and cultural revolution were in the air. And yet amidst this “anything goes” scene, one band still stuck out as an anomaly.
The Ace of Cups didn’t set out to be an all-girl band. The group's original five members - Mary Gannon, Marla Hunt, Denise Kaufman, Mary Ellen Simpson and Diane Vitalich - came together guided by the communal spirit that blanketed Summer of Love-era San Francisco. Up to that point, most all-female bands had worn matching outfits and played cover songs.
Despite their impact in San Francisco, in the intervening years the Ace of Cups were relegated to footnote status, all but written out of history books. But now, having kept in touch, four of the five original band members are about to enter a new chapter.

Wow.. how on earth did I miss these women? Fantastic then and Now!
@@AliciaSongbird Aren't they just the best kept secret from the hippy times! Too busy having babies while the guys made fame... such a shame!
Hi this is mary Gannon’s granddaughter and I’m really proud of her!!!!
💞 And so you should! Such great examples of being groovy women in their seventies. Old hippies never die! ☺
I'm loving Ace of Cups, I missed you back then but I'm enjoying your music now at 68. Thank you
The past offers hidden diamonds to those who are willing to dig.
So well said.
I loved this phrase!! ❤
OMG.....Just discovered these ladies
Blown Away!!!!!!!!!
I am in love with them
That’s insane how good they sounded back then. And sound as good if not better now, in their 70”s!
Being in Michigan, I never heard of them. I just ordered their CD.
I’m in love! These ladies have yet another new(old) fan!
They're absolutely amazing! I adore their music, their energy, their style. All brilliant. I'm so glad they've released an album!!!
So sad I wasn’t alive yet to go to one of their shows back in the day. Their music truly speaks to my soul.
For this girl who grew up on the Runaways, I’m so glad that these ladies are being celebrated.
Music is eternal
pretty inspiring. says a lot about SF and the spirit that was alive then.
They are great, really cool .I love them since now.
Still have angelic voices.
I remember them; saw them a couple of times, and I think I have one or two old posters showing they played with other top name bands. Ah, the old days.
They did a few seconds of backing vocals on the first Quicksilver LP cut 'The Fool'. Devastating and angelic ..
that drummer be drumming!! Hoo Doggie!! lol
For those of you that don't know,
BIG BEAT label has released their
music on CD entitled:
*It's bad for you but buy it*
A living,breathing testimony to
the spirit that they brought to
the Haight Ashbury music scene
and beyond, that will indeed
live forever. Peace
It is simply criminal that these werent signed back in the day, they were and still are utterly fantastic. Beautiful tight harmonies delivered with a pure energy.
If the boys would have stayed home with the babies, the Ace would have been able to record an album. Or if the women wouldn't have felt obliged to have babies, as women were socialized at the time...etc. etc.
@@scorpina69 Yeah back in the bad old daze societal constraints very much treated and expected women to be a kind of domesticated pet, it makes this group all the more exceptional.
These ladies are amazing!
Cool! Would live to see you live with Fanny and Birtha!!
Love this.
Love!
An article about all-woman bands introduced me to Ace of Cups. I had only known bands like the Runaways before.
A huge book could be written about all of these great artists!
Keep it up girls! Love your music and drive!
The children of the Sixties have a special timeless spirit that will never be seen again in another generation. They believed anything was possible and went out an tried to achieve it.
They opened the door to a radically new perception...

This band should have been huge in terms of people hearing their message. I love them to bits.

I love that girls 😍
Fanny, an all female band from LA (1969), has gotten back together. Maybe it's time for a festival of all female bands from that era? :) June Millington runs the Institute for Musical Arts with her partner in Goshen, MA.
Member Patti Quarto was sister to Suzi
awesome
WELL KEPT SECRET! They are SOOOO good! I just missed them! Got to SF 1971....Too bad! Where can I get their 2003 album? High Moon records? I saw only 6 albums at that web sight and nothing about Ace of Cups.
What a beautiful story. Probably the only band of that era with all members still alive, looking great, and doing well.
Thanks for watching, David!
Great band
I hitchhiked out there from kentucky, stood on the corner of haight asbury , we need more of this

Just one word...YEAH...¡¡¡
ACE OF CUPS!!!
Wow they are just great, exactly what I'm into, but what happened? Why am I barely hearing about them now? I feel like theres cool stories behind the band
It's a shame they never got signed.
We agree, but it's wonderful to see so much of their music get produced in the last few years: www.aceofcups.com
I always found it amusing how Sleeter Kinney seemed to take themselves more seriously than all-women bands that predated them by decades
grandi!
The Ace of Cups is awright. But Fanny rules.
Im on board...where do we go from here?
Jimi liked them that says a lot
omg can they play with Phish. that would be an awesome night.
The Summer of Love's Bikini Kill? I'm being serious though - it was ten years before The Slits, and 25+ years before Riot Grrl. I know it had a happier vibe, but it still had all the attitude...
I remember that beer can i think it was Shaffer
Where can I buy their music??
Hi Nina, You can buy their new albums here: www.aceofcups.com/order
Nice article in the LA Times 11/27/2018

Any info on how the name came about? Just curious...
I believe they are on the bill to play Kate Wolf this year 2019!
name of the song of minute 2:00???

They weren't signed cause they were women. It's disgraceful.
The reason anything all woman isnt successful, is because they'e women ???...hahahahahahahahaaaa,,,, Sorry, but I call it bullshit.!!! It could be any amount of factors... Its all about $$ and returns music scouts, labels, audience, trends.... their polictical stance may have made them a no go for reps... anything..., looking back, and watching this package, its a shame they weren't signed, they really are good... but I don't buy it as them being women. ALOT of bands never got signed back then that were amazing, and their music that they recorded themselves is starting to appear on Nuggets etc....and you wonder WHY no one signed em. Also, in the hippie movement, from my understanding...women were loved as equal. So you have to look at it in its correct time period and not in your hashtag generation time frame
The good thing is , theyve been put into rock n roll history where they belong. The first all female band is just a subtitle, as a band theyre great, all woman or not, makes no diff. Theyre great.!! The guitarist on a song not shown here had some great chops. The real thing is its sad they werent signed and developed by a record label... they wouldve been really interesting to watch grow and evolve.
it may had been one factor. I would say more like, well being on that "side" of things, obviously politically and otherwise, the honchos of the record companies didn't know how to market them. "Girl Groups" were supposed to be all vocalists guided by someone like Phil Spector, but the big Rock bands were all dudes- So the marketers may had been not sure what to do with them. But Grace and Janis were huge so it's hard to say, probably a combination of factors is my point. They must've never stopped singing because they sound really great here, and the drums and other instruments sounded well too.
A lot of discraceful things happened then, and still happened today. The world hasn't changed much because people haven't changed much.
that's not true...a lot of bands that were great, male and female, weren't signed....Don't make it something that it isn't. They have to be in the right place at the right time and connect with the right people...Janis had a vagina...she got lucky...
@@spignetti It's all about popularity and how that can translate into making a buck.. The bands with the big followings got signed. Record companies looked at artists in the kight of how much can the artists sell. Yes, there were exceptions but it all mainly boiled down to the artists popularity and what their sales potential might be. As good as the Ace of Cups might have been, they might not have had a big enough following to garner interest from the record companies.
