“Ace of Cups is course-correcting rock history.” -The Guardian
Ace of Cups, the beloved all-female rock group from the 1960s San Francisco psychedelic scene, will release their self-titled debut studio album on November 9th via High Moon Records. Produced by Dan Shea (Mariah Carey, Santana, Jennifer Lopez), the record’s twenty-one tracks span fifty years of brilliant songwriting.
They were legendary from the beginning; 5 uniquely talented woman writing fantastic songs, rocking as hard as any band out there and harmonizing like psychedelic angels. From 1967 to 1972, the Ace of Cups-Mary Gannon (Bass), Marla Hunt (Organ, Piano), Denise Kaufman (Guitar, Harmonica), Mary Ellen Simpson (Lead Guitar), and Diane Vitalich (Drums)-were at the epicenter of the ‘60s cultural and social revolution.
From the Acid Tests to the protests, from the free concerts in Golden Gate Park to the ballrooms of San Francisco, they shared stages with everyone from The Band to the Grateful Dead. Musical heavyweights like Michael Bloomfield, Jerry Garcia, and Buddy Miles were their fans and the Ace were chosen to open for Jimi Hendrix the week after his groundbreaking performance at The Monterey Pop Festival. When asked by Melody Maker magazine to name his favorite musical discoveries on his U.S. trip, the Ace of Cups was the first thing he mentioned.
Despite eliciting music industry interest for their exceptional songs, sublime harmonies and exuberant live performances, the Ace of Cups never got the chance to make a record of their own. Until now...
With the enthusiastic support of High Moon Records, and the guidance of celebrated producer Dan Shea, four of the band’s original members began exploring their back catalog and writing new material. Right from the start the Ace understood the art of the song, and the band has kept that spirit true and close to everything they do.
Ace of Cups blends pure rock, folk, blues and gospel influences with a pop sensibility and a garage band rush; all tinted by an intoxicating psychedelic sheen. As the news spread that the Cups were recording, old friends began to come by the studio to offer support and musical contributions. In total 36 songs were recorded during those sessions, and what started out as a chance to set the record straight turned into a history-making second act.
“I’ve been waiting 45 years for the debut album of Ace of Cups.” -Jackson Browne
Album guests include legendary players-and long-time friends of the band-Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, David Freiberg (Quicksilver Messenger Service), Barry Melton (Country Joe & The Fish), Pete Sears (Jefferson Starship), David Grisman, Steve Kimock (Zero/RatDog), Terry Haggerty (Sons of Champlin), Norman Mayell (Sopwith Camel), Sid Page and Charlie Musselwhite, as well as lead vocal turns by Bob Weir, Taj Mahal, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Peter Coyote. Even with this illustrious line-up, this record belongs wholeheartedly to the Ace of Cups, who can convey the joy of humanity’s greatest art form as simply and as eloquently as anyone ever has, resulting in music as timely as it is timeless.
This is the first release from the Ace of Cups project. Volume Two-coming in 2019-includes 20 more songs from the band, as well as contributions from Jackson Browne, Wavy Gravy, Sheila E and the Escovedo Family, Bakithi Kumalo (Paul Simon), and more.
“Ace of Cups mixed high-intensity, badass rock and roll with lovely a cappella harmonies and created something magical, something their fellow musicians and audiences loved. Ace of Cups is an incandescent collection of fabulous songs. The biggest challenge is deciding which is more remarkable, the songs or the story.”
-Dennis McNally, Author, Historian, Publicist (Grateful Dead)
“The Ace of Cups were stand up, fearless girls with hearts made out of music, and plugged into some Universal frequency that generated warmth and joy with the consistency of a heart-beat. This album is not a time capsule. This is the work of seasoned artists who’ve never stopped growing and never started taking themselves too seriously. The joy, the fun, the funk is still here. They are still beautiful and undefeated-mothers and grandmothers who defy roles and stereotypes, and stay plugged in to the same sacred artery.”
-Peter Coyote, Actor, Writer, Zen Buddhist Priest
“It’s a disservice to view their musicality and dedication to craft through the prism of gender. Their knowing lyrics, instrumental excursions, and divine harmonies resonate beyond their time, and it is a beautiful and bountiful remembrance that they are they getting the long-awaited respect they so genuinely deserve.”
-Lenny Kaye, Musician, Record Producer, Music Journalist

I ordered your album (on Vinyl of course) yesterday and I'm so exciting to slap it on my turntable and crank my stereo as high as it will go .... your music is astoundly good .... my wife worked for Big Brother back in the day ... she says that listening to Janis sing ball and chain in rehearsals was the high point of her musical experience .... but I'd trade that to have been able to hear you opening for Hendrix or anywhere else for that matter ... but I was in high school back in rural Missouri then ... I live in Portland now and I hope my wife and I can make it to the Oregon Country Fair to see you rockin' out .... thanks for bringing back the music so those of us who missed out can hear it now

Absolutely groovy! In all honesty, I do believe that these Ladies sound better now than they did when they were early together--at least their more mature sound vocally & instrumentally that no doubt comes from years of life experience: raising children, traveling, and settling into life more securely definitely makes their "Sound" so beautiful! I'm ordering the album as soon as my Social Security check arrives. Thank you, High Moon Records!
