For me "Skinny Man" was her recognising him subconsciously recognising him and blurting it out. I think there is going to be much more to that scene
That was my take, after the Dr. Donna transformation her memories were erased to save her life.
I thought it was just her randomly saying HES SKINNY
Well, he *is* skinny. In fact, I was thinking that he looks even skinnier now than he did before.
I need a meme of this, where she's going "what's that?" and Sylv says "a smoothie"
@@donmills2647 I agree. I think she has been dreaming about him again like in turn left
the best part of the trailer was when Sylvia jumped between Donna and the Doctor, stretched out her arms and yelled, "No you can't see him...he isn't even there!"
The "Skinny Man" thing is utterly ridiculous. Both the 10th Doctor and the 12th Doctors have been called/referenced as skinny.
That scene will definitely be explained much more in the episodes
Its the man from her dreams turning up in the kitchen.
@@SuperFunkmachine
Yeah that's the most likely why she's calling him that.
Kinda like when Amelia/young Amy met the 11th Doctor and gave him the name "Raggedy" Doctor growing up
Reminds me of 50 First Dates (and spoilers for that, it's been 19 years so you really don't have an excuse), when Drew Barrymore's character stops being with Adam Sandler's character, and even though she has the weird super amnesia that resets her memory each night when she sleeps, he's been such a big part of her life that she can recognize that there's an Adam Sandler-shaped hole in her experiential memories that she's struggling to define
Let's also not forget that the name "Albion" has been used multiple times in DW, most notably in NuWho in The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances as the name of the hospital where the child was taken. Of course Albion is also an old name for Great Britain as well, so the references could be endless.
I loved the skinny man line. One of my favorite Donna-isms is "He's so skinny, when you give him a hug you get a paper cut!" And Sylvia's reaction was priceless. So Sylvia, just like in The End of Time when Donna asked her mum if she was shouting at thin air and Sylvia replied "Possibly..." This aspect of her makes a sometimes unlovable character more lovable.
Miriam Margolyes as Beep the Meep? Omg, that would be hilarious. Yes please. (Btw, if you haven't read her memoir, please do. She reads the audio version and it's great.) Cheers.
My guess on the Skinny Man is that she has probably been having dreams about him like she did during turn left and that’s how she describes him. Not that it was something meant to be offensive.
When did she dream about him!
I like the idea that she sees him with her daughter, asks her about him and she lies to Donna, so when she recognises him, it's not memories coming back, it's "what were you doing with my girl!?" 😡
@@bobbybobstar1496 we dont know but thats usually how that shit manifests in doctor who, shell have like dreams about him and then completely forget them
@@bobbybobstar1496 when she was talking to Rose on the bench Rose says to her “I think you dream of him sometimes” then Donna has a little montage of her adventures with him. To me that read that she had in fact dreamt of him although it was never said specifically.
Think you’re forgetting the fact Miriam is a voice actress and one of the best at that, if all her characters sounded like her she wouldn’t be a very good voice actress would she
“First doctor who musical moment”
Daleks in Manhattan would like a word…
Donna could have seen this "Skinny Man" in her dreams...... and with Rose being Rose, Donna must have a residual memory at least.
Wait, what does Rose have to do with Donnas memory?
This was always how I interpreted it. She can’t exactly place him, but remembers “skinny man”
He's properly skinny, it's like a special effect....
Yeah I thought skinny man was what she called him before she knew who 😂, he actually was.
You hug him you get a paper cut 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
i think she shouts skinny man because she dreams about her travels with a skinny man kind of like amy did with the raggedy doctor. so maybe Donna is like ‘what?!! It’s the skinny man from my dreams!’
The skinny man thing is obviously a reference to when donna used to say the doctor was skinny. Its just a case of people being offended without knowing the context.
The same thing happened when matt smith regenerated. He’s examining his body saying “oh ive got hands, legs” etc. then says “.. and still not ginger!”. Some were offended thinking he was glad as being ginger would be a bad thing. No it was another reference to tennant being disappointed not to be ginger. Get the facts right before complaining!
seem to forget, Donna actually glanced at The Doctor, twice, even saying "yeah, bye" at the end of series 4. Donna will be fine when she sees him, but she mustn't be reminded of the surpressed memories. she needs to remain the same person she was... The Runaway Bride!
If I was to guess by the time Donna is houting skinny man, the Doctor has likely interacted with Rose, Sylvia and hopefully Wilf. Strange things are going on with her family and shes seen the doctor from a distance. Like she's visiting her mother and sees a skinny man walking from. The house and her mother is upset.
She's asked her family who he is and called him thin to discribe him, they have denied knowing him so she is now shouting skinny man in a "I knew there was a skinny man hanging around" sort of way.
Love the scene where Sylvia is trying to keep her from seeing 🙂
I think the “Can anyone tell me what the hell is going on here‽” seems very Donna in idiom and delivery. I wonder if the Doctor has figured how to pull the meta Crisis from her and back into him. Fixes her and fixes his regeneration cycle. But he becomes a bit Donna-esque for a while.
I would like to see Sacha Dawan come back as the Master but with the revelation that all the versions of the Master we've seen since 2005 have come in between Roger Delgado and Peter Pratt's lich version. And the Master's disintegration is not necessarily caused by being on his last regeneration but because of a regenerative injury caused by his attempt to appropriate the Doctor's body and then being forcefully returned to his own. So, they could steadily add makeup to his face as he slowly disintegrates and becomes more and more desperate to recover the ability to regenerate somehow.
I wish social media didn't exist. People taking offence at the "skinny man" line. This is what happens when you are terminally online🙁
Either way super excited about the 60th. This channel is the best for Who news!
I agree. And spoilers. I hate spoilers. I really like whatculture. It’s fun to hear them talk yet I don’t fill like there are any spoilers unlike some channels I know. Why do you want to ruin it for yourself & others? The fun is in the guesswork.
People are getting offended over the word “skinny”. Seriously?? I’ve been called it so many times for being underweight and not eating as much as I should but I genuinely couldn’t care less. There has to be a point where we just ignore all this nonsense otherwise we won’t be able to have terms for anything or have jokes in media. If David Tennant hasn’t got a problem with it then I personally don’t think people should have a problem with it. It’s not going to keep you up at night is it?
I understand if people are bullied for being skinny then being upset at being called that. But to be offended on behalf of a particular group is getting old. I’m overweight. I have been called fat many times in my life. Does it hurt sure but I’m not about to project that feeling on a thin person being called skinny because their experience may not be the same as mine. In our society people value thinness over heaviness. So maybe they don’t see it as negative. There just seems to be this culture online that are the professionally offended that look for things to complain about and are offended for all sub groups of people if they are mentioned. Let me be upset for myself if I find something offensive. If I don’t let it go.
Was just thinking of the Buffy musical episode! 23:08
There is no Ringmaster in the original "Celestial Toymaker". What you see in the old photo is a soldier called Sgt. Rugg.
Sorry - I haven't got time to read all the comments but what about - in the trailer where the Doctor says: "I don't know who I am anymore", part of the storyline is devoted to the Doctor having to extract Donna's memories to restore his own? So in this instance, she's been like a back up, portable hard drive for him? If he doesn't know who he is anymore, he won't remember the fob watch hidden deep in the bowels of the TARDIS either...
Sort of reminds me of the Eight Doctors book plot…post Doctor Who movie Eight still has amnesia issues and basically runs into 1-7 of himself to get a copy of their memories to fill in his own (Eight’s) memory…
I’ve never personally read it, but I doubt that they would really get into the fact that there would still be a memory gap from whenever Seven ran into Eight until Seven regenerated into Eight…
It might have to do with The Timeless Child maguffin. He'd been so certain all his life of his he is, and now he doesn't know how old he really is, how many incarnations he's had, who is his actual race, and where is his home if it's not Gallifrey.
@@kanton4108 My fervant hope is that Russell finds a way to re-write and completely obliterate the entire "Timeless Child" fiasco of a storyline. It's the head of my list as the absolute worst thing that's ever been done to the character.. It showed a complete lack of respect to years of creators that came before and to core, established facets of the character. It ruined Doctor Who for so many people as the ratings plainly showed. There should ALWAYS be limits put upon how much your allowed to recklessly play with an established franchise that is so dear to so many people's hearts worldwide. It's like saying that everything that came before meant nothing. Pure recklessness and disrespect.
It's so frustrating to see so few people willing to just let an artist tell their story. We've let expectations get so far ahead of us that we can't just be told a story. If it doesn't fit with what we expect then it's not good. And that's awful. It's awful for creativity and for the artists and it's awful for the people trying to enjoy entertainment.
Oh gosh, I remember first seeing the Autons in the revival and I'm still very wary around shop mannequins XD Well done RTD
Donna shouting, "Skinny Man!" reminded me of Amy saying, "Raggedy Man!" when she saw the Doctor again. My theory is that she has a slight memory about a skinny man that she does not recognize. Maybe she sees him on the edge of a dream and when she sees him in the kitchen it all comes together.
In the trailer, just prior to her shouting that, she was talking to her Mother, saying she feels like she has forgotten something, something very important that is a big part of her life.
Does anyone else think Ncuti Gatwa's words in his brief appearance sound a little like Donna? Is his regeneration possibly going to reabsorb the Time Lord part of the Doctor-Donna, therefore allowing her to be fully human and safely able to remember her missing time with the Doctor and all the good that will do her? I get the impression that RTD wants to give her character a sort of a healing, to tie up a loose plot thread from before, not to mention a kick start for Ncuti's new Who character in the process? (and different to Rose's human Doctor from Journey's End)
Sigh I feel like this has to be canon even though it might not be. That’s a damn good idea
So maybe that absorption kickstarts the regen from 14 to 15?
so you think the doctor would let her regenerate and lose her identity and family? I don't think the doctor would do that. I think its more likely after the Jodie incarnations finale that the mortality of the doctors companions has made him realize there are things he can do to reverse some of the damage he's done. Hell the celestial toy maker was able to manifest entire worlds; Maybe this is a world where he's trying to torment the doctor knowing full well what would happen if he just "bumped" into donna which lets be honest...them just casually bumping into each other and him being in her living room isn't likely
You just blown my mind!! Like legit
I think the Doctor MIGHT use the Cameleon Arc to take out the Time Lord Consciousness from Donna and store the fob watch (safely?????) in the Tardis????
Sean’s entire idea about the cold open literal made me spit my coffee out. Brilliant! Completely brilliant!
I'm hoping that Neil Patrick Harris playing the Celestial Toymaker is a big misdirect and he is really playing a new version of The Master
Donna saw the Doctor talking with her mother right after her memories were taken. She may remember him from that moment. And the way she says “Skinny man”, she has probably seen him recently around, at least from some distance.
I just wanna say that I didnt know about your channel before 2022 and I wish I had met you before, because you're almost the only people that "I know" that see and talk about Doctor who (I'm from Chile in South America). So thanks for your enthusiasm and opinions
Same and same. My family thinks it’s dumb! Can u believe them????
Only I’m from the states.
@@occheermommy hahaha happens
but is the greatest
RTD’s seasons tend to open with “Join us, we have cookies!” and then devolve into glorious chaos from there, with the only thing that brings everything back together being the Doctor’s charisma.
And I’m absolutely here for it.
I love that description.
I hope the TARDIS still has the biscuit dispenser it made for thirteen 😂.
@@ooooneeee It was confirmed that 14th's uses 13th's Tardis as he regenerated outside.
Gatwa scene he is partially dressed in Tennants attire, this could be the first thing he says post regeneration or still in regeneration trauma and is speaking with Millie,
"I was here for the 50th anniversary year" is the nicest way to remind me that I'm old as hell
I remeber watching the 50th anniversary special in the cinema. I hope they do that again, it's so much fun to celebrate with other Whovians.
Unless you remember the 20th anniversary special airing on television, you're not old. So get over yourself already.
@@tl1110 there isn't really a reason to be rude, is there? I am over myself; old as I am, I don't really mind, I was simply making a joke
Miriam Margolyes has a track record of being a phenomenal voice actress. I remember the day I found out she was the sexy-voiced Cadbury’s Caramel rabbit in the 80s - you could have knocked me down with a feather, she was so unrecognisable. So it’s possible she could be Beep The Meep, even if it doesn’t sound like her. That being said, I hope it isn’t here as I’d like to see her in a full-on live action role rather than as a voice.
I'm feeling old. Dr Who wasn't quite 2 years-old when I was born. Stop saying 60 years-old please! 🤣
It's exciting, isn't it?
One thing regarding the increase in available funds for the show, there's a truism in many organisations (particularly in government departments!), that if you _haven't_ spent every penny that the budget gave you by the end of the fiscal year, your following year's budget will be slashed by the remaining amount. This is why you're more likely to get a pot hole fixed in Feb-March than any other time of the year. And no, the weather starting to get better has nothing to do with it. Hubby used to work for local government highways back in his late teens. I've worked in a number of government departments and it applies to them too. If you need something upgraded, you'll get it quicker if you ask in February!
Back to the show, the BBC is renowned for counting the pennies. If they think episodes can be done for half the price, even the most complex CGI won't be given any extras if that budget has been slashed. Hence the excess spending on CGI because if they don't use it where it's not necessary, they won't have the cash for it for when top-flight CGI _is_ necessary! Hope this all makes sense!
I reckon the birth of Donna's child could have dissipated or even eliminated the thing that would have burned her brain if she were to see the Doctor again.
I like that idea.
I like that idea too. Worked for River, getting some of that TARDIS DNA 🙂
Why is her name ROSE? Does Donna have subconscious memories of Rose
She remembered the doc in the end of time???
You have to remember that River was conceived in the TARDIS while it traveling the time vortex.
The idea of pulling the doctor'ness into a fobwatch or transferred into a hand/child is inspired, tho, and a really good call back
I'd love it if Missy ((a woman in a shop)) had given Donna a timelord gadget to make her immune to the whole head exploding thing, . Or the toymaker himself has manipulated circumstances to make Donna and the doctor get together, he needs it to change the world for his own ends...
She saw Skinny Man leaving after the memory wipe, so she isn't remembering the Doctor, she's remembering the man who was "just leaving".
They're now filming in my home town Newport ... EXCITED!!!!
EXCITING
i think you are onto something with the mirror thing. minus the punching LOL
i really hope Ncuti is heavily involved too, i am curious to see if Ncuti is even acting in the capacity of 'the doctor' in this clip. almost like Pompeii, also i need this River video done asap lol
I would LOVE to listen to you guys talk about her lol
way to make me feel old, I remember watching the 3 Doctors in 1972 Approx. 10 years [9 really].
Everyone makes a controversy out of something nowadays. 🥴 Doctor Who history lesson; even in Donna's parallel universe, she dreamt of him so even with The Doctor's memory blockers that he left on her during Journey's End; a few things might seep through like it did for Amy when The Doctor banished himself from the Universe and everyone forgot about him in Series 5.
And about this skinny man stuff; wasn't Capaldi referenced as Skinny Man occasionally? And Donna straight up says; "Skinny Boys In Suits" in Journey's End. If anything, this is basically saying that Donna kinda recognises him but can't place him. Because she's not remembering The Doctor, she's most likely trying to remember John Smith like he introduced himself to her memory wiped self.
And NPH is not playing a different version of the Dream Lord. It's been confirmed for a while now that he's playing a Modern Version of the First Doctor's Villain; The Toymaker.
I don't think that Neal Patrick Harris is playing the Celestial Toymaker. I think that due to copyright law there is a possibility that they might not be able to use the Toymaker. When Doctor Who began in the sixties the Beeb had a policy of allowing the writers to maintain the copyright to the characters of thier work; which means that writers like Terry Nation were able to maintain the copyright to the Daleks and Bob HOlmes was able to maintain the copyrights to the Autons, the Rutons and the Sontarans as well as the Master. In order to uses those characters in the revival the Beeb has had to ask permission from the estates of those writers to uses those characters. If they can not get permission or the writer didn't leave a will then they can't really use those characters. That is why they have not used the Rani. Pip and Jan Baker, who created her, died with out leaving a will and they can't use it.
Sure but the writer whose credited with creating the celestial Toymaker (the late Brian Hayles) also created the Ice Warriors and we’ve seen them in revival who. So obviously that wouldn’t prevent them from using the Toymaker.
@@bobbyhenneberg6789 It depends on what the estate have agreed to allow.
@@bobbyhenneberg6789 That information i did not know. Thanks. But I'm still not really convince he's the Toymaker. For all we know he could be Rassilon or the Master. Heck he could even be the Meddling Monk. We just don't know. And, wait for it, I think it is useless to speculate until the specials air on Mouse Plus later in the year.
He's the Trickster from Sarah jane Adventures ! I think :)
@@beatricesomeone3300 That would make sense. That way they wouldn't have to bother with using a character they don't have the rights too.
Great show, all. One thing to put out there from me - is that a 3rd/4th Doctor era TARDIS key that Neil Patrick Harris is wearing?
It’s so nice to have you both back and much as I appreciated Ellie taking the time to make a cameo in Sean’s last video it’s great to have her back in full mode. Ellie makes a good point about the budget allowing more more cinematic episodes to be made but it not necessarily making good ones. The reason it survived so long with no budget was good acting and scripts that didn’t rely on big effects but told good stories. R.T.D is a master at blending the two together and making it seem natural and the effects don’t pull us out of the plot by seeming out of place. The whole skinny man fuss is in my opinion just a tiny bit of the overall plot that because we don’t know the rest is out of context. I don’t find it offensive or strange we know that Donna has had memories leak through before maybe it’s all her mind can cope with. If she remembered more than that her head would explode and we don’t want that people are too easy to take offence at what is clearly a comedy moment. Great work as always and keep doing the Beep impersonation it’s hilarious to watch.
Harold Saxon’s gas-mask is on upside down, and the logo is a V for ‘Valiant’, not A for ‘Albion.’
Have to admit feels like only yesterday the 50th anniversary. This year the 60th anniversary. I remember when Dimensions in Time came out as part of the 30th anniversary.
Not sure the A of Albion and the upside down V on Sim's mask are related. I thought it was a V for Valiant or A for Archangel. The one on the mask clearly lacks a horizontal line in the "A".
look similar but it is not the same.
Taking offence at "Skinny Man"? Some people need to get a life. 🙄
Absolutely. I am 52 but sometimes I wonder it must be for people in their 80's or 90's who had to fight in wars etc... having society become so ridiculously precious. In fact sometimes i think we need to show more consideration for past generations. They did some very great things that we should not take for granted. I thought they almost patronised William Hartnell in The Power of the Doctor script. Every current generation seems to think they have everything right.
Yeah I remember that 50th teaser thing. I loved it!
River Song needs to show up to fix the continuity problem with her original appearance when Tenant's 10th Doctor doesn't know her but she knows his face.
Wouldn't it be fun if Ellie and Sean had a cameo in the show... Maybe having a coffee together somewhere at just the moment the Doctor strolls past on his way to another adventure... Or perhaps wearing LINDA badges and queueing up to get the Doctor's autograph!
The logo on the oxygen mask was that of the Valiant, John Simm just put it on upside down 😏
Miriam Margolis doing the voice of Beep the Meep, she should also do the voice of the Wraith Warriors.
TREMENDOUS VIDEO!! - WELL DONE GUYS!
Apropos of nothing in particular, I think it's worth noting that the trailer gives us an (apparent) antagonist that is played by a well known and generally well-liked American actor. While there have been Americans here and there on the show, I think it's interesting that RTG is coming out of the gate with NPH. If this is an indication of the sort of influence we'll be getting with Disney involved, I can't say I'm unhappy about it at all.
RTD and NPH worked together before. I guess that might have led to this casting. NPH doesn't seem to play an American character anyway.
Doctor Who is the ultimate six degrees of separation.
The idea of pulling the doctor'ness into a fobwatch or transferred into a hand/child is inspired, tho, and a really good call back. I'd love to see you two gush^H^H discuss over that one!
I get the impression that you two are genuinely fond of each other, and it makes your joint videos even more enjoyable. Keep up the good work!
Yes I have quietly thought that for some time. Sean agrees with Ellie on everything and with delightful glee and sweetness. I am a romantic so I'll just quietly keep my fingers crossed but make no more further comment so as not to embarrass the two.
I don't think she's shouting JUST "skinny man". I think it plays out in a way like this; Donna walks in and 14 hides, Donna starts asking who's that man? To which she getting relies like "huh" "who" "what are you talking about" until she finally shouts " THAT SKINNY MAN BEHIND YOU!" IT all makes sense and isn't "rude" really. It's just clipped, like al trailers.
RTD has teased a "devastating episode" which was covered in another episode of Who Culture (I confess I haven't watched it yet, please don't hate me!) but what if the devastating part of things is that . . . Donna doesn't make it? What if they don't actually "fix things" and in the end she sacrifices herself to save the Doctor right after she remembers everything and this is the catalyst for why Rose ends up traveling with the Doctor?
Love the Wrarth impressions!
Cool. Can't wait to watch these episodes.
First off, I would totally watch Seán's concept of 14 and 15 fighting each other for dominance!
Dr Who is a total gift for my personal version of "Six Degrees...". My step-uncle is an actor who appeared on-screen with Christopher Eccleston, back in Cracker, so Dr Who is a goldmine for "Six Degrees of Lorcan Crannitch"!
Maybe the logo ties The Master to the Minister of War 🙃
The way Sean does “The wrarth?” - it’s like they’re going to break into a musical dance number 😂
“Wrarth, wrarth, Rasputin” 🎵🎶
That cold-opening idea is fantastic! 😄❤❤➕🔷
Was anyone actually offended by the "skinny man" thing? I haven't seen anyone complain about it and the only source I can find claiming that people were upset is a Facebook page with a history of making shit up for clicks
They should start animating big finish stories in the future.....
That's very kind of u. Never worry about the gift. 😀
Anyone else notice the "Albion" mask is different in the picture and the video clip (5:50ish)? I also wouldn't call the logo the SAME, but similar.
You guys should be writers, absolutely! No joke!
Given the source, I will take the news of more animations for missing stories with a big grain of salt. I certainly would like to see more of them as it will introduce those stories to new fans. If Neil Patrick Harris is playing the Celestial Toymaker, I think there is an obvious classic story to make an animation of 🙂. Disney funded animation of Marco Polo anyone? Anyway, keep up the good work with these videos!
I married a welsh girl and I absolutely love wales 🏴, Pembrokeshire holds a special place in one of my hearts. (She don’t have the accent either). If it’s already been said I apologise. Just found you guys and subscribed. Love your channels! I'm an "old school" American fan of The Doctor. When I was a kid #4 Tom Baker was my Doctor. The first "Who" memory I have is of finding the show on PBS one day and seeing Pertwee regenerate. They ran the shows two at a time so I got the first Tom Baker episode right after and I was hooked for good! When David Tennant started I was just blown away. He's the modern equivilant of Tom Baker. So I'm super stoked he's back, no matter how much we get of him.I love the trailer, it looks more like a major motion picture than a TV show, in standard Russell style....Both you guys keep the coverage coming and I'll be watching. Your the best on UA-cam I've seen........Oh well....as with all "Who" questions the answers will be found "in time".... ALLONS-Y!!!!
Glad to have you with us in such an exciting year for the show!
Going on from the potential for a musical. I did see a spectator video of filming in Bristol. I swear saw nph try to dance with David in the street. I'm not 100% but maybe nph does do a bit of singing and dancing? 🤷♀️

Yes, it caused a bit of a stir on Doctor Who Twitter!
When some people saw in the trailer that she was calling someone a skinny man they took to complain.
Hi I am new to this but I would like to say Sean & Ellie your both brilliant keep up the good work
I don't know if it's confirmed but apparently rose is Donna's daughter, what if this is true and she named her rose because her memories from the end of time leaking through hence calling her daughter rose

Their going to have a lot bigger budget now because of the Disney deal. I believe the budget before was about £20million a season for 13 episodes. Now their going to gavd a budget of about £10 million per episode
That is incredible, but a bit scary. Ultimately, I'd trust RTD with making £10M episodes but sudden massive budgets have ruined other beloved things...
