    In 1987 I learned how to drive dumptruck on that very same model, 72 w/a 392. But it had a 4 spd aux. Frank the owner used to have masking tape on the dash with the gear numbers. So when I shifted, i had to point my index finger out and touch the tape on the dash. I knew what gear I was in all the time. Outside of Nipigon at golf course hill, Frank would have me time it right so i hit the bottom at 4200 rpms and hold'er to the rug and come over the top at 3200. Sometimes I'd blow a shift and the driveshaft would DING... and Frank would laugh so hard and yell "Ah you rang the church bell" hahahaha.

    Gotta love those old Loadstars.
    Big, Loud and none too speedy, but you fix them up right and take care of them, they're bloody immortal.
    In the works of saving up to rebuild a 1700 of me own, get her rolling again, and build a home on her for the long haul.

      Just bought an 83 Crew Cab 1724 Dump with the 392. Super Rare runs smooth as butter.

    I love the old loadstars, mine has the mv404. On the highway she only likes 45-50 mph but she will pull any weight you put on her!!

      my mv446 would do 65-70 on flat ground. I swapped in a 7.3 idi when the 446 went. I haven't driven it on the road yet with the 7.3idi but I'm hoping I can still get 60 out of it

    Hello Josh, Got my star to fame and fortune with an old warn out 62 1800 in 72. took a ton of repair work to get it so it would work all day. It tip off a bridge into the raquette river with a load of logs on it in January! After removing rom river. Transfer 113' dump onto another 1800 same wheelbase. With a 6b53DD. More power than 345. Cheaper on fuel. No more tune ups.

      I have a lot of respect for the people who used to drive those old trucks every day. We're spoiled today with these high horsepower diesel engines, and good transmissions.
      Luckily this old dump truck is going to be used locally around the farm hauling grain, and other materials from one place to another. I consider it a good retirement for a truck that has lived a life. If I win the lottery it'll get fully restored 🤣

    Drove an F1800 D for many years that is a standard shift pattern for those transmissions very easy to use pretty trouble free you will find the auxiliary much easier to change if you extend the auxiliary shift lever the longer they are the easier they are to change

      Thanks for the idea! I wonder why they made the shifter so short? I'm 6'3" and hunching down to shift like that really makes my back ache. It's going to have to be bent kinda funny to clear the dash and the seat, but I'll probably rig something up.

    Hi everybody! I'm going to have to post an updated video soon. It turns out the exhaust pushrod on the #1 cylinder was bent, causing the noise on the driver's side. It ended up breaking, which is how I figured that out. The distributor was also stuck, and the last "mechanic" who worked on it clearly did not know the firing order is cast into the intake manifold, and also must not have had a timing light. Almost every bolt holding the air compressor, mount, and driver's side valve cover was finger tight. The truck is running better than ever now, and it is a blast to drive! Thanks for watching!

    I have two loadstars like that. the original reflectors came in a gold metal box and said international harvester on it.

      @joshuasrulez  2 роки тому

      That's good to know, thank you. There is no gold box, just reflectors.

    you don't see too many tandems around. Typical IH speedometers usually don't work or they bounce. That needs a diesel! Detroit!! Them gas manifolds always leak too! What part of NJ you in? Yeah sounded like a lifter tick. A lil B12 Berryman additive in oil might free it up.

  • @nferraro222

    Hmm..I always heard the 392's all had rear-dump exhaust manifolds - myth dispelled:) That is one heavy bastard. I love it. If you need some leads, let me know. I can think of one junkyard that deals heavily in old IH trucks and heavy trucks and one guy who strips them and sells the parts. He has a giant former dairy barn literally FULL of hardware and body parts. Both are maybe 1.5 hours from the PA/NJ border. Haven't gone to either in three years, but I'll see if they're still in business.

      In my internet travels for information, I have read so much contradictory information online about the 392. The numbers on the block, along with the firing order, agree that it is indeed a 392. Certain parts for this engine in this truck seem impossible to find these days. I'm having trouble sourcing a new mechanical fuel pump.
      As far as used parts go, I could really use new glass for the passenger side door window, and a new windshield. We already have our eyes on a newer International with a twin stick transmission to hopefully use the main transmission out of.

      @@joshuasrulez , if you haven't already found a passenger side window, most glass places can cut you a new one using the driver side glass for a pattern. Just make sure that they use safety glass. It's not that hard to install in the old track. By the way, I have the same five speed transmission in a 48 White bus.

      @Jerry Brooks I actually sold the truck, as cool as it was, it wasn't what I need.

    Are the brownie boxes on these synchronized? Or do you have to rev match and float em or double clutch to shift them?

  • @evananderson3350

    I have some transmissions too. I might have one for it

    • @joshuasrulez
      @joshuasrulez  2 роки тому

      I was just out driving the truck the other day, it is very frustrating trying to find 4th and 5th in the main transmission. It's what we like to call a mystery shifter 🤣 are they all like that?

    • @evananderson3350
      @evananderson3350 2 роки тому

      @@joshuasrulez the transmission in the dump truck I use is alittle bigger than the one you have because my truck came with a mv446 and then I swapped it to a 7.3idi. my 1967 loadstar has a 345 in it and my grandfather told me the shift fork would always bend or break and you wouldn't have high gear anymore. the old mechanic from the construction company that the truck came from told me they had to take the cover off the top of the trans every couple months and adjust the shift forks. so since your truck has a sv engine in it it might have the smaller transmission. I have two if those transmissions one is in the truck and the other is setting on a pallet in my yard. I would sell either one if you needed parts.

    • @evananderson3350
      @evananderson3350 2 роки тому

      @@joshuasrulez I just read another comment and you sad you were looking at a newer truck for the transmission. just make sure the engine is a 304, 345 ,392. they have a specific flywheel housing that only fits those engines and the the bell housing it international only. anything with an mv engine has a sae 2 bell housing

    I know this is wierd but can you send me a photo of your crank pulley for this truck?
    I put the same ps pump on my loadstar to power a 07 chevy hydroboost brake master cylinder, but I only have a single belt crank pully and can't drive my pump.
    I would definitely appreciate it.
