Thatcher once said it of the LibDems but I think it now describes the Tories.
Yes, the UK has a government of sadists. That sums up the Tories for me.
Agreed 👍
...and you wouldn't want it any other way.😊
@@chatham43 You seem to be lost. Your response does not appear to be relevant to my comment unless you are insane enough to believe that the UK needs sadists in power or that I would want that. Perhaps you wouldn't want it any other way. I have family in the UK so I would hardly want sadists in government.
Elected by a sadistic majority! It is sickening.
You forgot self-serving and blatantly corrupt. 37 billion wasted on a test and trace app that never worked and that they started to develop after Germany had already one that worked and that was developed for 23 million, not billion plus umpteen billions wasted on PPE that either was never delivered or not fit for purpose if it was delivered. I hope the next government will deal investigate those "contracts" thoroughly.
Tories Sadists ? There are many types of Tory from your Choc Ice Tory through to council estate Tory. But the Sadistic Tory is the most prevalent from 1834 to present.
The racist and bigoted Tory is the most common variety!
@@andymatthews9132 definitely up there.
The Tory had to stifle a laugh when he said "hard working British people." They are all well aware that they are playing the divide and rule card.
And you are perpetuating it.
Get their media mouthpieces including the BBC to batter people with the idea that migrants are responsible for all their ills, then pretend they are working to address the 'concerns' about said scapegoats hollered by the people they brainwashed in the first place
Pointing something out isn't the same as causing it. Don't be daft.
Don't forget that Rwanda is so safe that the government are using the threat of being sent there as a deterrent.
...it's a deterrent because they don't want to go there...think about it.
Exactly 😂
It's not even about immigration. It's about taking UK out of treaties which guarantee our human rights. It's not about asylum seekers, it's about 60 million Brits having human rights.
It's scary how little most people know about Human rights legislation and our international treaties. And unbelievable that Jenrick etc want to make us international pariahs by taking us out of the Council of Europe. The Northern Ireland peace agreement also depended on human rights legislation and is at grave risk if rights are removed. This would in turn get us in real trouble with the USA.
Exactly. Spot on. 👏
Thank God someone else knows this , there is hope after all
@mrnice7570 it's plainly obvious to me. It's their new Brexit.
It's all about dividing groups of people up, and pitting them against each other.
The Tories always need a 'project' which will divide us and stir things up more. They have constantly been like this, and indeed it's their every essence. It's what they're about.
Unfortunately, given the revelations about the way the BBC works and how they choose a QT audience, George has probably consigned himself to another 23 years of non invitation to be involved.
Mentorn Productions on behalf of the BBC.
Mercer couldn't even look him in the eye. He could only smirk like a conceited child when he is called out for what this government has become. None of us are surprised yet I am wracked with fear that the opposition will still find a way lose the next election.
The media will take care of it. for sure.
No. Starmer has already lost the next election for labour, with his stance on Israel, amongst other things. And there are plenty of ,,other things,, as I'm finding out every day ! 😠😠
Starmer has no moral position on this issue. He will go with whatever wins votes.
I still think the opposition will win... But I also think you will then find that nothing significant will change.
What opposition? You all shit yourselves when corbyn was in for a chance. Now there's no point in voting.
I think perhaps it's a sneaky way of rejecting the Human Rights legislation
Everything that the British establishment is doing is sneaky mate!!

We don’t need any lessons here in the U.K. about human rights ,we invented them . We are more than capable of bringing in our own bill of rights ,without interference from upstarts here & abroad.

Yeah. That's the joke. Ha ha.
Could the answer be that it’s not safe?

@@danielbanbury378 yet they want to add Refugees from other parts of the world to the mix, to a region that has had mass genocide and ethnic violence 20 years ago and is still ongoing in neighboring regions?
Probably because the people are not looking for a safe country but a rich on. Rwanda is safe but not as rich France is also safe.
Its so good to see Novara media subs growing so quickly.
Didn't the French offer to set up an asylum processing office in France but our stupid government rejected the idea? Remove the need to cross the channel and the crossings will stop.
this whole fiasco seems like a sadistic, cruel and extremely expensive smoke screen.
They know it, that's why they won't do it. The crossings are only an issue because they mean a few refugees are still managing to get here. They want all routes closed, including unsafe ones, but ~especially~ safe ones
But then the government couldn't use desperate migrants on boats as an excuse to be vicious xenophobes

Never understood why we block asylum seekers from working.
Then everyone is surprised they get caught up in running drugs etc,
I'm pretty sure the idea was that they didn't want them to work because they might get to comfortable in the area they are in which makes it harder to remove them. Which is doubly ridiculous when you also realise the people that put those policies in tend to complain about people not integrating
It's because our government is incompetent in processing their refugee status, that most good countries can handle easily.

The failure of the Rwanda scheme will lead to an exit from the ECHR. That was always the plan.
They haven't got enough time left. It'll never happen. Leaving the ECHR affects the Belfast Agreement and the Brexit TCA.
Over my dead body
It would be a gross violation of International Law, were we to leave the ECHR. Ironically it was something we advocated and had a strong hand in legislating, more than 40 years ago.
The UN and EU should join forces on this and collectively 'throw the book' at the UK, if we do end up leaving the ECHR.
We could be talking about international sanctions being imposed on the UK. A less drastic measure would be a large fine - not just a slap on the wrist, but a fairly hefty fine.
Brilliant news. Thanks!

George Monbiot is a great speaker and puts his point across effortlessly.
"Hard working, ordinary people" is a phrase the Tories use all the time, but we know they couldn't give a stuff about hard working, ordinary people. One interesting thing here: I'm using the word 'stuff' because I'd originally put four asterisks, to stand in for a certain word we're rightly not allowed to use, but guess what? UA-cam won't let me - it turned it into two asterisks and when I tried to add another two, it wouldn't allow me to post the message. It's incredible - even asterisks are censored now.

As I understand it the UK government is paying Rwanda £140m to take just 100 migrants (£1.4m per migrant), none of whom have been taken so far and the total cost of the plan will be £290m. Also Rwanda has the right to reject any it doesn't want and the right to send (an unspecified number of) Rwandans to the UK. What's the point? What really is the point?
Yes, they keep very quiet about the part of the deal that says those planes don't come back empty but with Rwandans on board. The point, though, is what George Monbiot said: performative cruelty. It makes no sense from an economic point of view, or from a net migrants point of view, but the "send 'em to Rwanda" thing plays very well with a certain crowd.
There is no point. That is the point. It's just a jolly wheeze for "readers" of the Mail and Telegraph.
Try £240m including the legal expenses for trying to say black is white. Especially as the UK has accepted asylum claims from Rwandans.

I once respected Jonny Mercer. I remember listening to an interview with him when he first became an MP. He literally stated something like "it makes me sick that when I see people I respect going to parliament and then when I see them months or years later they have sacrificed all their morals and values just to fit the party line or fill their pockets." He has genuinely become what he stated he hates.
He's not really very bright - certainly not an original thinker- and is very gullible to the right wing propaganda and bs which is fed him every day. I do think though that he learned much from his exchange with George on QT last Thursday.. I'm sure he'll be keen to listen more.

We all have to take responsibility for refugees. That's the current situation. War, famine, persecution etc is never going to stop. Just can't op out. Time everyone grow up and realised that.
We can't keep taking in the world's population ad infinitum. Something has got to give. I'm sure you won't mind having a pension in your old age.
It's gonna get worse if anything, with climate change causing huge impacts and conflict over resources, and we're completely unprepared to handle a global problem we can't just hide away from. But when has this government ever cared about long-term planning?

At least Jonathan Mercer wasn't drunk on this occasion!
Strange how the UK follows the rules and those in the EU itself just ignores them...
The problem i have we are accepting too many migrants, the UK is suffering due to lack of infrastructure, Europe is on the ropes due to mass migration.... every country has to keep migration down to sensible figures...
If Europe is on the ropes what does that say about the rest of the world...
If the leaders do not fix climate change, the number of people trying to reach the UK will massively increase in the coming decades. Not through their choice, but through survival necessity. The fact the government in the last few decades have done soooo little to avert global climate disaster is a primary cause of immigration.
Not even the government website on travel to Rwanda say its safe.
Three years ago (or thereabouts), HMG were up in arms about Rwanda imprisoning, torturing and shooting refugees to Rwanda.
...I know it's only a black African country...but it doesn't necessarily mean its unsafe!
Judging by the statistics available, net migration in the year to June 2023 was 672,000, the number of people arriving by boat to claim asylum is alleged to be in the region of 6000. So less than 1% of total immigration. How exactly is this policy possible going to make a significant difference to the people arriving by boat or the total onward migration. Even if you are sympathetic to the government strategy, the maths don't add up in numbers or people or pounds
Because a simplistic slogan is likely to stick; the detail of policy is superfluous to many. Stop the boats - that'll do as a rallying cry. It is not even original. It comes from Tony Abbot's time in office in Australia, brief and disastrous as it was. Offshore detention cost millions, by the way.

The bit that sticks for me is that right from the beginning they've said it's BOTH a deterrent as Rwanda is so terrible while also Rwanda is a safe country and therefore legal to send people too. How much has this joke scheme cost the UK taxpayer thus far ? I thought we were skint?
Sadly I think they have introduced this Rwanda policy believing it will work as it is stated it did in Australia when Australia introduced PNG Manus Island, Nauru and Christmas Island processing and detention centres - claiming it stopped the trafficking and traffickers making money. It was horrific the amount of time they locked people up for and children became adults in those places.
What really needs to happen in the UK and Australia is a massive building of houses - Tiny houses they don’t need mansions they need cities built for new arrivals where they start out and then move out to traditional housing as they find their feet in their new country - work, family etc we need these people to work.
