Hah! Incorrect. The first Metroidvania game was actually Pac Man because of the backtracking and visiting areas after upgrading your power pellets to be able to eat the ghosts.
I recently learned that Symphony of the Night was originally planned for the 32X. I can only imagine what could have been. Also, I forgot about that ear-splitting Marble Madness music. Ugh.
The piss poor skit at the end was classic. You guys are like a middle-aged Scott the Woz (or rather he's a zoomer version of you dudes), and I mean that as a compliment. Your videos have gotten me through a lot of long days recently. Much thanks!
The Master System port of SoR2 was done by TecToy in Brazil and was a direct port of the Game Gear version. It wasn't designed from the ground up like SoR1 was specifically for the Master System by Sega. TecToy has tons of games that are horrible but the master system is still being made there and is the longest production record holder for any console to date.
Yes early Christmas gift! I'm actually working a double right now from 3pm-7am and this is literally the best surprise right now. Thank you Joe and Dave for a great year of videos and I hope you guys keep it up in 2017, after a vacation in which you guys well deserve!
"Four years later, Konami decided to port this title to the Game Boy Advance ..." surely a simple spoken typo, Contra 3's GBA port was more like 10 years later (as the title screens in this very video show). Great episode, loved the topic! :) A poor port that springs to mind is Hexen for PS1. Really not a recommended means by which to play that game and one of the roughest FPSs on the console, IMO.
I do baseball! And I would also like to thank you guys for an early Christmas gift. Speaking of which, time to fire up ye 'ol Saturn for some Christmas Nights....
Dorelaxen Sega had to port the games like Sonic Team did with the mega drive sonic games for Sonic Jam on the Sega Saturn. Dreamcast only has 16 mb of ram, and only a 200 mhz CPU, it very obvious that with those specs, the DC can't handle perfect Sega Mega Drive emulation with hardware of 1997/98.
For the record, “OutRunners” is getting a (most likely) arcade-perfect port for the 3DS “3D Classics” line. Not sure if that's a consolation, but the port of “Thunder Blade” was, so...
Update: There is now a fan made update/patch for the Saturn Symphony of the Night that restores transparencies, fixes the aspect ratio issues, and dramatically improves the performance. It even uses the 4mb memory expansion cartridge to remove almost all of the loading. It's amazing what people have been able to do.
I had the Saturn import of SOTN as well, and personally i enjoyed it as an extension of the playstation version.. yes the extra loading, slowdowns, and bad graphics overall was a let down, but regardless of these issues, I liked that it was a more complete version of the PS1 version. Had extra items, extra secrets, and the extra areas.. some of these extra items and areas are present in the PS1 version but required hacking to access as they were incomplete, or removed for whatever reason from the US version (i.e. 2 extra familiars in saturn version, maria boss fight had Maria's theme music (Guardian), etc). Also the trap door and save area that leads to the extra underground garden area is present on the PS1 version if you get in there through hacking/glitching but dead ends with some glitched textures too at the save point, which points to that these levels were suppose to be in the PS1 version but weren't finished in time or cut out and the area's access blocked off. So it's nice to have them in the Saturn version, even if they seem odd or out of place due to the unique enemies and music these areas have.
I'll play Devil's Advocate and say I actually prefer the Saturn version of SotN. Why? Well, I'm getting kinda musty in the ol' attic upstairs, so the game slowing down to a crawl makes it A TON easier for me to react to what's going on. :p
"I'll tell you what I think of it... it's piss poor!" also that was a fairly weak stream Dave, I'm concerned. Might have to get a checkup for that, just in case.
Master System version of Golden Axe was completely programmed in background layers. Thus the choppiness and no sprite flicker, cause no sprites were used. They did the same with the MS port of Altered Beast.
@singularon1 i mean one of then said that thps5 isn't bad I really like their channel because of the game commentary on games and ports few people care about buy they really suck at reviewing
I'm a new fan and, good job, you hooked me. I just went through the whole Game Sack playlist from oldest to newest in order. Of course, I have seen all these episodes before separately but I decided to just go through them in order so I could see them again. Now what am I suppose to do? I guess I'll just go through them again but honestly you guys could never make new episodes fast enough for me.
the most disappointment i had with a port is sega touring cars on the Sega Saturn, after Daytona, Sega rally and Manx TT i wasnt expecting anything else but more of the same of sega's classic arcade action..... oh what a let down! Apart from what's wrong with the port, i have to ask, why didn't they get the actually nuts and bolts of the game working properly before they added all the Easter eggs? so many of them but on a game that's not really worth playing! I don't get the logic behind it!
thanks for the new episode guys! I loved listening to you complain for half an hour. I hope you have a merry holiday! and I also hope the guy who does ups isn't getting his ass kicked from holidays. :)
What's funny is the N64 version of THPS2 has way bigger multiplayer levels, like the size of the single player levels, whereas the ps1 version had heavily shortened levels multiplayer wise.
the days when arcades existed to showcase what was missing from the home consoles are long gone, but man were they fun! that rush I got when walking into an arcade was the best.
A piss poor port that comes to mind for me right away is the GameCube version of Megaman Anniversary Collection compared to the PS1 Rockman Complete Works. The port manages to: 1. fuck up the controls 2. be missing a TON of features, especially the remixed sound options and bonus unlockables 3. have the 8-bit chiptunes ON AN MP3 LOOP rather than be properly programmed to auto-loop. This means the tracks eventually fade out, and repeat. WTF?! 4. It's poorly translated. 5. Contains Megaman 8, but has HEAVILY compressed FMVs and the music tracks are cut so they are all shorter and sound inferior. 6. It runs in 480i only. The PS2 and Xbox versions of Anniversary Collection don't fair much better either, but both of them don't have quite as many flaws.
Realizing how dangerous posting this is (on the level of defending a "George Lucas Revision" when it shouldn't)... 1. Oh come on! The button swap isn't THAT bad, especially if you've never played Mega Man (much/at all) before and don't take long to get used to. Not like there's any lag or anything. 2. "Missing sound options and remixes". That sounds minimalist at best. 3. Again, I can easily overlook this. 4. If by translated, you mean from Japanese to English. Eh... no comment. If by translated from originals, again, going to agree to disagree. 5. That is the fault of the GameCube disc I'm afraid. 6. Again, a fault of the GameCube, so by that logic, every GameCube game should suck (even "superior" versions of games like RE4 and Twilight Princess)
1. What you're missing is that Anniversary Collection, like all game complications, is primarily aimed at prexisting fans who own at least one game in the series already. Therefore, those are the _first_ people to notice controls. It's true to say that if you are new you can easily adapt, but the anniversary in anniversary collection was the 20th. That means 20 years of people playing with B = shoot, A = jump. It is unforgivable for them to get that wrong. 2. No. It's not minimalist. The arranged soundtracks were one of the key draws. Otherwise, you might as well play the originals. The whole point of the Rockman Complete Works was to offer little extras to make them the definitive versions of the classic games. Without them, it's just a shotty port. 3. It's a sign of laziness. A symptom of the whole project. 4. As is, from Rockman Complete Works to Megaman Anniversary Collection. Their translation work was awful, with grammar mistakes and incorrect translations. Apparently translated by babelfish.com and not a real person who knows both languages. It's garbage. 5. Which is why they shouldn't have put it all on ONE GameCube disc! Other games split across two, even other Capcom games. It was a bad call to compress everything down to a single disc. 6. No it isn't. The GameCube was fully capable of progressive scan. Atomic Planet just didn't bother. Then again, the PS2 version also only runs in interlaced mode which is even more unforgivable given that the PS2 version is literally based on the PS1 source code just ported over and that version ran progressive scan. Atomic Planet just did a piss poor job with Anniversary Collection all around. interlaced video is always inferior. It's true to say the GameCube library didn't suffer from 480i only mode quite as badly as the PS2, but all of the sixth gen consoles were capable of 480p and it was only devs on Xbox that systematically used it.
Except you don't get MM7, 8 or the Arcade games. I'll take my GameCube collection, thanks. And yes, the button swap is pretty dumb, but it's not as bad for Classic Mega Man as it would be for X (which they did actually fix for X Collection...though you can already swap buttons in every X game anyway)
Great vid. Love the passion and attention to detail. I can tell you guys really love games. Glad to see you haven't lost that passion as you've grown older.
When I think abt Piss Poor Ports, I think abt Sonic Genesis on GBA, PS1 port of Duke Nukem 3D and ... ehem, Bayonetta on PS3. Good job on this episode and happy X'mas!
A Blob yes i will be buy a dreamcast. For me is the best console of all time. Emulators sucks just is not the same experience like you are playing on real console.
Matias Carp16 Yeah, but I mean playing it on the go. Having Jet Set Radio on a handheld. Playing it in the car and stuff. The PlayStation Vita has a port of Jet Set Radio so... the Vita port easily beats the GBA port.
Starcraft 64 could be argued as a "shitty port" - although they did wonders in making a true RTS game playable on console, the massive amounts of compression on cutscenes, more repetitive dialogue from units, and generally just bad sound and video quality/resolution overall make it the vastly inferior way to play the game, even if you ignore controls.
Not really a mad idea. All of the OG Command & Conquer games came out on the PSOne and a few made their way to the Saturn. Command & Conquer had polygon based graphics at a time when that was rare even on the PC. To my knowledge, the N64 port of Starcraft was really well received at the time.
The Playstation also go an awful port of Diablo. Blizzard was really trying to take their PC success and translate it to consoles where the real money was. It wasn't until WOW that Blizzard started making the real money they deserve. The PC user base just wasn't big enough at the time.
J.P. Czerniak It's like other ports mentioned in this video. Sure, there may be some impressive achievement to it, but it doesn't change that it is objectively, by far, the worst version of the game.
The reason Symphony of the Night is worse on Saturn is because it isn't actually a 2D game. The game is made of images of sprites on top of polygons viewed from the side, and the Saturn isn't as good at polygons as the PlayStation.
I enjoyed Tony Hawk 64 despite missing FMVs. Back then, the only difference I knew about between PS1 and N64 was blood. The really annoying part about THPS N64 was having no memory ca- I mean, pak. So unless you could beat everything in one go, you were stuck at the beginning.
True, but with some N64 games you could save to the cart. So when we got a game that needed the memory card, it was a surprise rather than the expected norm. I guess the problem wasn't really the game itself lol.
Me and Hybrid Heaven in a nutshell. By the time I was old enough to look for used Controller Paks online, my cart started freezing up on test runs very early in the game, so what's the point? Also, I was excited to finally own Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon and...I need a Pak for that too. COME ON MAN.
the Saturn version was handled by KCEN, while the PSX version was handled by KCET. KCET was the much more experienced team. Still despite the ugly graphics, I prefer the Saturn version. So much more to explore.
bvzxa3 Incorrect. The Saturn version of SotN was actually programmed singlehandedly by my dad. Other games programmed by my dad include, but are not limited to: Battle Monsters - Saturn Shadow Blasters - Genesis Ultraman - Super NES Super Bunghole - Jaguar Mr. Mario Man - PS4 Computer Jones - PC
sans: one step closer and you're gonna have a bad time frisk: *steps closer* sans: you asked for it *takes out a tv, pc engine and golden axe* also, are the ads fucked now? the one i got wasn't even english
Jet Set Radio is definitely one of those games I'd wish Sega would make more of!
That chick from Golden Axe does have a nice "back story"
callmemarc There's a crack in that story, butt all together, it's still pretty tight.
Damn it was about to comment: 12:18 Dat backstory. But this is top comment. Well done sir.
Slyguy threeonetwonine Men. Lmiao. Wow.
ba dum tiss
shes also got nice milk bottles
Dang, you know a game is bad when you can't do baseball.
Hey, That’s a Baseball!
I grew up with the N64 Tony Hawk games. I'd usually play them muted and rock my own music on my tape deck.
Gotta love the 2am binge of a new gamesack episode.
These videos are always Quality.
Merry Christmas Fellas! Thanks for the Early gift!
Merry Christmas!
0:50 - Actually, Castlevania II is the first Metroidvania Castlevania game, 10 years before SotN.
Hah! Incorrect. The first Metroidvania game was actually Pac Man because of the backtracking and visiting areas after upgrading your power pellets to be able to eat the ghosts.
This topic deserves to be a series :P
I quit my music career just to watch Game Sack. 😜
Merry Christmas guys. Much love to the Sacks. See you next year. ❤
Amber Short i love you
Amber Short you don't have a music job
Really Adam just because you say? Ok. Then I'm going to say that you don't have a clue.
Merry Christmas Amber! Hope Santa brings you great things.
Game Sack? more like you're sacked xD
I recently learned that Symphony of the Night was originally planned for the 32X. I can only imagine what could have been.
Also, I forgot about that ear-splitting Marble Madness music. Ugh.
Getting a new episode on Christmas Eve is a nice present! Thanks guys and Merry Christmas!
Got to play with my sack on Christmas morning now thanks Game Sack!
Merry Christmas... from the bottom of my sack LOL
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you too Dave! you're funny as hell. I love Game Sack lol. Merry Christmas to you as well, Joe!
That Golden Axe footage was beautiful, great capture, as always!
Golden Axe is one of my all time favorite arcade games.
The piss poor skit at the end was classic.
You guys are like a middle-aged Scott the Woz (or rather he's a zoomer version of you dudes), and I mean that as a compliment.
Your videos have gotten me through a lot of long days recently. Much thanks!
This episode is so like "Boo".
Boo! Haunted House!
Streets of Rage reference?
The Master System port of SoR2 was done by TecToy in Brazil and was a direct port of the Game Gear version. TecToy has tons of games that are horrible but the master system is still being made there and is the longest production record holder for any console to date.
dreamcast version of tony hawk is best version
best framerate
It may be the best version of the game but it's still just a sloppy port of the PlayStation game, locked at 30fps.
Yes early Christmas gift! I'm actually working a double right now from 3pm-7am and this is literally the best surprise right now. Thank you Joe and Dave for a great year of videos and I hope you guys keep it up in 2017, after a vacation in which you guys well deserve!

A poor port that springs to mind is Hexen for PS1. Really not a recommended means by which to play that game and one of the roughest FPSs on the console, IMO.
I'm surprised neither of us caught that. Oops!
The original GameBoy port came 4 years later while the GBA port was 10 years later. You must have mixed that up when researching/writing the script.
I can't wait for the next game sack episode, because I LOVE watching this kind of stuff!
me: sigh nothing to wa...
youtube: new gamesack bitch
me: thaaaaaaaaank yeeeeeeeeew!
santa: bitch thats your gift.
funny!!
Merry Christmas, Joe & Dave!
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas Game Sack!
Merry Christmas!
Hey Gamesack! You guys should do an episode on ROM hacks and Create your own type games! Big fan and Happy Holidays!
You guys always have the best shirts.
garou1911 I always have the best shits
A Game Sack on Friday?! What is this beautiful sorcery?!
I do baseball! And I would also like to thank you guys for an early Christmas gift. Speaking of which, time to fire up ye 'ol Saturn for some Christmas Nights....
Yeah Christmas Nights. Good idea!
The 3P! Piss Poor Ports.
Also Contra 3 was one of my favorites because of how its difficulty setting changes the bosses mechanics.
Sega Smash Pack on the Dreamcast. The emulation is completely off. I returned it literally 20 minutes after getting it and trying out Phantasy Star 2.
The music will make your ears bleed in that game.
Dorelaxen and Virtua Cop 2 is only another shitty port with Windows CE (known as the DC performance drop on many games).
For the record, “OutRunners” is getting a (most likely) arcade-perfect port for the 3DS “3D Classics” line. Not sure if that's a consolation, but the port of “Thunder Blade” was, so...
I wish they'd port to consoles and not portables. I wanna play them on my TV!
Game Sack Fair enough.
Skatin' to "Police Truck". That's priceless, dude. 👍
Yes
Piss Poor Ports for a Sad Sack O' Shit like me . . . thanks for the Christmas present, Game Sack!
So it's nice to have them in the Saturn version, even if they seem odd or out of place due to the unique enemies and music these areas have.
Dear Game Sack,
Have a merry Christmas, a happy chanukah, a crazy Kwanzaa, a tip top Tet and solemn and dignified Ramadan.
Same to you and a Very Happy Festivus!
Stringer Bell It's not Ramadan, dude. Moon calendar or something, don't lose sleep over it.
Feats of strength! Feats of Strength!
I love the cheesey skits at the end! Merry Christmas, guys.
No need Dave, Jet Set Radio is on the Vita in full cel-shaded glory.
And mobile, I spose.
NickBLeaveIt Wait, it's on the Vita? Thanks for telling me! :D I've been looking for a version of that game to play on the go
I love watching Gamesack!
I'll play Devil's Advocate and say I actually prefer the Saturn version of SotN. Why? Well, I'm getting kinda musty in the ol' attic upstairs, so the game slowing down to a crawl makes it A TON easier for me to react to what's going on. :p
Thank you for all the high quality, entertaining content.
N64 versions of Toy Story 2 and A Bug's Life are also nerfed compared to Playstation
What's more happy to see Gamesack video on merry xmas day!
"I'll tell you what I think of it... it's piss poor!" also that was a fairly weak stream Dave, I'm concerned. Might have to get a checkup for that, just in case.
You rock game sack! Good stuff like always. I always like to hear what you guys think.
Thanks and Thanks for watching!
Added one minute ago! Can't believe I'm late 😭
Merry Christmas!
Master System version of Golden Axe was completely programmed in background layers. Thus the choppiness and no sprite flicker, cause no sprites were used. They did the same with the MS port of Altered Beast.
Silent Hill HD Collection.
Oh wait...
no no.... that's fair.
It's basically the Exodus the Destroyer of piss poor ports. Game over.
@singularon1 i mean one of then said that thps5 isn't bad
I really like their channel because of the game commentary on games and ports few people care about buy they really suck at reviewing

What's funny is the N64 version of THPS2 has way bigger multiplayer levels, like the size of the single player levels, whereas the ps1 version had heavily shortened levels multiplayer wise.
Why would you play it on either system when the vastly superior Dreamcast version is available?
Because control pad
Yeah, one last for the old sack this year. It's festivus miracle!
Next is the feats of strength!
This video was an entertaining airing of grievances on these awful ports. Good episode. Merry Christmas!
the days when arcades existed to showcase what was missing from the home consoles are long gone, but man were they fun! that rush I got when walking into an arcade was the best.
The Master System version of Streets of Rage II *looks* like it might of meant to be for the Game Gear.
More like the Atari 5200.
Merry Christmas guys! Thanks for the great content over the year. It's amongst the best on UA-cam. Have a safe and happy Christmas
who the fuck gives game sack a thumbs down? why even?
I do, because Out Run for Sega Mega Drive is cool!
Whoa, those consoles in the intro looks so beautifully well taken care of, they look clean and well... Practically new, neat.

Don't piss in my port, or urine for trouble!
Lolz...
Great way to start my morning with coffee before work. Thanks
US Gold were the bane of my existence as a Amiga owner back in the day. so many bad ports
Merry Christmas guys, thanks for the early upload! Enjoy the holidays with your families!
Next episode ought to be: Piss Easy Games!
Was beyond relieved to see that Jet Grind Radio was the Piss Poor Port as opposed to JSRF.
When I think abt Piss Poor Ports, I think abt Sonic Genesis on GBA, PS1 port of Duke Nukem 3D and ... ehem, Bayonetta on PS3. Good job on this episode and happy X'mas!
I haven't tried Sonic 1 on the GBA yet. Now you've got me curious!
dont go there... srsly...
Merry Christmas btw guys :)
PS1 Duke 3D is not as bad as Saturn Duke 3D though.
As Yoshi's Island told me in door 3 of 6-8...
RUN,
RUN AWAY!
Justin Nielsen lol I got the Saturn one and I try to sell it on eBay 3 times with a buy now of 4 pound n still couldn't sell it lol
"Castlevania II: Simon's Quest" for the NES is to my knowledge the first metroidvania in the Castlevania series.
Contra 3 on the GBA was 10 years later, not 4 years.
I should write Dave's script for him........
Nukleon Unless he's talking about the 1998 Game Boy port, which actually came out in 1994.
Streets of Rage 2 on the Genesis: it's like boo! on the Master System: it's like poo?
If you want to play Jet Grind/Set Radio on the go then just play the Vita version.
A Blob or the original dreamcast version :)
Matias Carp16 You can take the Dreamcast on the go? Emulators don't count. .3.
A Blob yes i will be buy a dreamcast. For me is the best console of all time. Emulators sucks just is not the same experience like you are playing on real console.
A Blob sorry for mi bad english i'm argentinian
Matias Carp16 Yeah, but I mean playing it on the go. Having Jet Set Radio on a handheld. Playing it in the car and stuff.

Sato I would argue that Starcraft 64 is an amazing port given that they got it to work very well with the limitations they had.
I love the Ps1 port of Diablo, Becuase they dubbed it to Swedish over here. Sound so insanely corny!

It's like other ports mentioned in this video.
15:34 "Four years later..." should be "Ten years later..."
Dave be stayin hydrated! My man!
The PS1 had a memory card.......
What a great christmas gift! Gamesack in the morning makes me smiling :)
Oh, you want piss poor ports? Try Re-Volt on Playstation.
Wow, Dave is really hydrated it appears.
Well... Almost every single NeoGeo port to those 16-Bit peasant consoles come to mind. Horrible ports....
you had neo geo back then ?

I actually think Samurai Shodown is a respectable game on Genesis.
NeoGeo master race FTW! :P

Merry Christmas guys,I enjoy all your vids, thanks!
the Saturn version was handled by KCEN, while the PSX version was handled by KCET. KCET was the much more experienced team. Still despite the ugly graphics, I prefer the Saturn version. So much more to explore.
Yes I mentioned that.

Incorrect. The Saturn version of SotN was actually programmed singlehandedly by my dad.
Other games programmed by my dad include, but are not limited to:
Battle Monsters - Saturn
Shadow Blasters - Genesis
Ultraman - Super NES
Super Bunghole - Jaguar
Mr. Mario Man - PS4
Computer Jones - PC
Dave Bladegun it's possible lol!!

you forgot about Gauntlet Legends for the Ps1, that is one example of a Piss-poor-port.
