Welcome back! I'm impressed that you managed to track down all the launch titles...... That's quite a feat! I got my first PS2 way back in December of 2001 for Christmas and the games I got for it I can remember to this very day. WWF Smackdown Just Bring It Silent Hill 2 Resident Evil Code Veronica X (Had Devil May Cry demo disc in it) The Mummy Returns Street Fighter EX3 Gran Tourismo 3 Ridge Racer 5 Tekken Tag Tournament. Final Fantasy X It was a wonderful Christmas. My parents spoiled me big time that year. I spent the whole day trying out all the games. It was amazing. I remember my whole family were really impressed by the Silent Hill 2 intro with James standing in front of the mirror. The graphics really stood out to them.
What a Christmas!! Imagine getting a PS5 and 9 games in this day and age. Would easily cost you at least $2000, I'm from South Africa so I'm going on what I would pay on retail. Really expensive
Damn I got mine in summer of 2003 along with MGS2 Sons of Liberty, Silent Hill 2, ATV Off-road Fury, Smack down Just Bring it, Thunder Strike Operation Phoenix and NCAA 2003 it was a surprise birthday gift by my father. Such wonderful memories.
I have the PS2 slim and it’s literally been thrown in the air from the front of a van to the back by my parents when they were mad at me when I was little, and it still works. Best quality console ever made.
I really enjoyed FIFA 2004 with the whole ability of controlling TWO players at certain times and also how they started including a lot of 2nd-tier teams
PS2 from PS1 really was like the future has arrived. Along with the millenium mentality, its like we finally going to move to the moon. Sony even released a freakin robot dog, Aibo, anyone remember? People still take care of those dogs in Japan until now. No one ever thought its 2020 and its bleaker then 50 years ago.
Ah, yes, ps2, my favorite console of all time. I was in the sixth grade when I got this beast. Smackdown Here Comes The Pain, Smackdown vs Raw, Viewtiful Joe, GTA Vice City, iNinja, FFX, Crash Bandicoot Wrath of Cortex, Metal Gear Solid 2, etc. Good times my man. Good times.
Excellent review, sir! I like how you are being informative without being hateful at all given how basic some of these games are. Shows true love and passion for the medium. PS2 is the best gaming period for me with a lot of fond memories.
the PS2 was kinda past my era, by the time I was in my 3rd year of primary school the PS3 had already come out, but I can still remember the short time I had with the PS2, It was fricking amazing!
Kessen and a random rally game were all I had when I first got a PS2. I was just a random kid from Southern England with no knowledge of Japanese history or much interest in strategy games. But I ended up playing all the way through multiple times and getting all of the story branches and endings. It still holds a special place in my memory all these years later.
kessen and kessen 3 were amazing. same as you i'd never played a strategy game but played kessen to death. it also got me into feudal japanese history, the characters were so cool i had to know more about them. i still check every now and again if they're gonna make kessen 4 or even a remaster of the first 3.
I'm so glad my friend gave me their PS2 back in 2014. Still works like a dream. Also RIP my local used game store that died last year. I got all my PS2 titles from them.
There seems to be a Ridge Racer game in a lot of launch lineups. Given how early they get released I think they do a good job with them. Ridge Racer DS, a launch title on the Nintendo DS, is actually my favorite racing game. Definitely NOT the “best” racing game I own, but it’s still my favorite.
SSX was and still is insane ! I also remember the first PS2 demo given with the console playing Wild Wild Racing. Coming from the n64 it was quiet impressive playing such game at 7 years old. 20 years later, I still play it from time to time just to get this first PS2 game feeling. Fantavision was an UFO to me and FIFA 2001 was my first multiplayers game. NHL 2001 was super cool as well even though I don’t know the rules. So much memories thanks to your video. Merci!
✏️ Fantavision now as a VR version coming out. 👍 The NTSC-U/C's *_NHL Hitz Pro_* can be played online again. Not sure how well PAL hardware mods put within reach NTSC online gameplay but there are a lot of members in PS2 Rewired/PS2 Online Discord groups who will help navigate and answer questions.... ✏️ Also, outside the vein of your FIFA and, yet, in the vicinity: PAL region's Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (patch required to connect) and Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (patch required to connect same languages other than English but none supporting cross-region play), online gameplay can be enjoyed again for up to 4 players - requiring as few as 2 PS2s since it supported 2-players per console. 👍 Same goes for Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 for the NTSC-U/C.
I played eternal ring about 6 or 7 years ago and had a really good time. It's basically a beginner's king's field. I'm not sure I'd like it as much nowadays though. Great nostalgia-filled video by the way! I still have a boatload of games to (re)play on PS2, still having a blast with it after all these years. I highly doubt I'll be able to say the same about the PS3 and 4 when they'll be 20 years old.
Glad to hear you had a good time with eternal ring. Also, yes, the PS2 still has games that I want to try out too, which is partly the inspiration for the creation of this Chanel I guess.
One of my friends from school got the PS2 pretty close to launch and Ridge Racer V was the first game for it we played. I remember being blown away by the graphics and thought it was impossible for a game to look so 'real' lol. To be fair, it's certainly one of the best looking games on this list.
Also amazed here by the visual upgrade Ridge Racer V presented alongside its frame rate. My only disappointment was looking forward to a reasonable expectation of them carrying over PS1 Serial I-O system link feature - as per 2-4 player R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 and 2 player Ridge Racer Revolution - either by using the PS2's new 4-pin Firewire "s400"/"iLink" system-link and/or, better yet, the up-and-coming ethernet network adapter that could have opened up Ridge Racer V to some online play if not at least legacy-supported LAN-play and, ergo, LAN-tunneling to this day if they had explored that latter option.
The PS2 launch is the most fun fun I had with the start of a console life cycle From Ridge Racer V to Tekken Tag (And Tekken Bowl) SF EX 3 and Armored Core I had a ton of fun games to try at the start make the PS2 one of my all time fav systems
The first game I ever played for ps2 was Tony Hawk’s pro skater 3. It was Christmas morning and since I wasn’t expecting to actually get the ps2 for Christmas it was very special. The nostalgia I get from firing up Tony hawk 3 and making that first drop into the half pipe in the “foundry” is overwhelming.
Simpler times. I took out my old PS2 and my N64 a couple of weeks ago. Playing these consoles is so much more relaxing somehow. No installation, no updates, no annoying questions about personal data or "please connect to the internet in order to play this single player campaign", no trophies or achievements, just playing that one game that you have inserted. Edit: also, great work on the video mate, subscribed!
22:40 - It's literally a port+expansion of the NAMCO's GP500 arcade machine. You get 2 more tracks (Donington Park & Motegi weren't in the arcade), the grid goes from 1998 to 1999 and the playable motorbikes go from the 3 from the top manufacturers (Honda NSR500, Suzuki RGV500 & Yamaha YZR500) to the whole 1999 grid. Also, the game is very arcadey in every sense, including how the rest of the grid either gets boosted or slowed down depending on where you start to avoid having to render too many motorbikes.
Might have to pick up all the consoles that I gave away, as a teen. Ps1,2 N64, Super Nintendo and Dreamcast. Miss childhood gaming. It’s incredible how far gaming has come. Compare Alex The Kid to Red Dead Redemption 2 and its mind blowing. Go back even more to Commodore and Amstrad and you’ll possibly lose your mind. Can’t remember what of those last 2 systems had the green screen and games on tape cassette, plus games was as cheap as £1 and my local outside market, had a game stall and it was such a joy to be able to buy a game or 2 every week. Then my dad got me some adapter to enable colour screen. You could even copy a friends game using a regular double cassette player/recorder. I remember getting Super Nintendo with this converter that would let me play American games. My first games was American version of Street Fighter 2, pal mario kart and super Mario bundled with console. Not quite sure why my dad got me the converter. Maybe I was able to get some games early. Oh man, I could go on all day. Kinda miss the joy I got from gaming as a kid. I play a bit now but no more then an hour or 2 every other day. Not as much spare time and I just kinda grew out of gaming.
Dang! Good old days. I remember Tekken Tag was my first PS2 game in my collection. Very nostalgic! I miss my PS2. I kind of stopped gaming and got really into skateboarding around 2007-2008. Got a PS4 Pro last year, back at it again.
When PS2 was launced in 2000, I had just previous year, 1999 bought the PS1 and enjoyed playing it's Gran Turismo & the newly released in 2000, Gran Turismo 2 + other games, so I was in no hurry to buy PS2. In fact I though I'd skip the PS2 era, and bought the PS3 Slim in 2009. Then in 2017 decided to buy after all a used PS2, original Fat model and immediatly I started regretting, that I didn't buy it earlier. What an great system and nice looking games :) Feels pretty big step forward from PS1 and the step from PS2 to PS3 feels smaller. I like racing games and have for example GT3 and GT4 for PS2, also the motorbike game Tourist Trophy, made by Polyphony Digital, who makes the excellent Gran Turismo games as well. Gotta find the Ridge Racer V, looks really fun game with beautiful graphics. I have Ridge Racer Type 4 for PS1 and loved playing it, it has amazingly beautiful graphics for PS1 as well. Really enjoying PS2 games :)
Eternal Ring was the best launch title. Even with the bad mechanics. You just gotta see past that. The story, music, and making rings was a lot of fun in my opinion. And another highlight was figuring out how to grind the raptors in the forest and solving the forest puzzle and figuring out how to beat the queen bees with the 20 foot stingers. Pretty scary. Also thoroughly enjoyed the bonus dungeon. On one of the floors you can farm cockatrices by continuing to re-enter the level. You gain at least a level every time you kill one no matter how high your level is and using a mist ring makes them light work.

All those boxes are checked here as well. 🔴 Still enjoy Ridge Racer V while imagining what it could have been like if developers had carried over the R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 and Ridge Racer Revolution's PS1 Serial I-O system link either by way of the PS2's new but short-lived "s400" 4-pin firewire/"iLink" connection if not/also utilizing the anticipated ethernet of the network adapter for online play if not at least LAN-play and, ergo, legacy LAN-tunneling to this day if they had equipped it so. 🔴 Destruction Derby: Arenas (NTSC-U/C) can be played online again via fan server but I've never met anyone there and the server environment seems a little unstable.... I think most PS2 online players go to Crash 'N' Burn (PAL and NTSC-U/C releases), Flatout / Flatout 2 (NTSC-U/C release) Twisted Metal: Black-Online and Jak X: Combat Racing (PAL and NTSC-U/C releases) for demolition / vehicular combat. 🔴 GT3 blew my mind graphically as well as the physics (latter I favor a bit above GT4) and later when I came to educate myself and setup system link starting with 2 PS2 consoles using the above firewire "s400" connection, moreso. I can tell you that the force feedback detail for USB steering wheel is also quite good and all of what GT3 to offer comes together quite satisfyingly after putting the endgame aspect ratio to widescreen when racing someone else directly connected to your PS2 or 3-6 players, dependent upon the track, using a FireWire hub. 👍 🔴 GT4 Online-Beta (released for only for NTSC-U/C) can be raced again online via fan server which has plenty of people including PAL drivers as well as some Tourist Trophy tracks and other mod goodies. 🔴 the original release of GT4 has a splendidly immersive wraparound screen experience - 3 or 5 screens - by way of ethernet networked PS2s and/or B-C PS3s when LAN-play racing others. Now that SOCOM has PS2 fan servers, I'd like to see the netcode of the SOCOM S.V.D.L. tunneling software get repurposed for the original release of GT4 so that wraparound screen racing can be enjoyed via tunneling online since the GT4 Online-beta didn't support wrapped screens. GT3 had a rudimentary way of doing three screen wrap but left and right viewing angle centers are locked in GT3 at 90° to the left and right which might have one leaning more towards using a left and right screen for a rear view down the side of the vehicle instead. The viewing selection GT3 had was rudimentary and taxing because it required tedious, repetitive selection of "broadcast" instead of ~compete option Before the Race on the controller of each console connected to the firewire hub followed by having to (pause and?) cycle through the drivers/positions point of view and then across the respective directions of view relevant for that driver's video displayed across on the respective screen at the beginning of each and every race every time a race is started, iirc. That was greatly streamlined with the GT4 original release, iirc, in that each driver simply makes their respective selections just one time from among ethernet LAN'ed consoles for their respective driver/position followed by locking in their assignments for the respective angles of view for each of their screens and it's never messed with again - at worst, not during that session.
I had most of these games, non at launch as I got my PS2 the christmas after launch and only with smugglers run and time splitters, the dreamcast ones i had on that. I think Midnight Club and XSquad were the first games I was able to finish on PS2. LOL! Man I remember my parents said something similar, also I would buy DVDs of the old tapes and my mom would yell in Spanish "why did you waste money on this when we already have it (on tape)" made me laugh, and now for a while I've been buying some blu-rays of the DVDs I had
Same
PS1 was my first CD player
@@leebeeskee awesome, cd players were very common at the time, mine was this old radio, I used to put some ps1 CDs on there and listen to music from the games lol
Welcome back! I'm impressed that you managed to track down all the launch titles......
That's quite a feat!
I got my first PS2 way back in December of 2001 for Christmas and the games I got for it I can remember to this very day.
WWF Smackdown Just Bring It
Silent Hill 2
Resident Evil Code Veronica X (Had Devil May Cry demo disc in it)
The Mummy Returns
Street Fighter EX3
Gran Tourismo 3
Ridge Racer 5
Tekken Tag Tournament.
Final Fantasy X
It was a wonderful Christmas. My parents spoiled me big time that year.
I spent the whole day trying out all the games.
It was amazing.
I remember my whole family were really impressed by the Silent Hill 2 intro with James standing in front of the mirror.
The graphics really stood out to them.
Just Bring It was one of my earlier games for the console too. Spent a lot of hours on that one.
I got my first ps2 back in Christmas 2001 with crash bandicoot the wrath of cortex and jak and dexter.
FIFA 2001 is by far my favorite Soccer/Football game of all time, the glory days before loot boxes and microtransactions and before EA went bad
It's still a fun time. There's a nice simplicity to older sports games.
Fifa 2001 was my jam. I loved how bicycle kicks were so easy when crossing the ball.
I don’t play videogames that much anymore, but when I do, you already know which console I’m playing on.
still have the same fat ps2 i got when i was 4. i’m 21 now and i still play it weekly, amazing console!
I have the fat "satin silver" version that's super quiet. Seriously, it's quieter than a cigarette.
Good times.
One of my favorite games to this day is Kessen. I've just always loved turn based strategy games.
Excellent review, sir!
I like how you are being informative without being hateful at all given how basic some of these games are. Shows true love and passion for the medium. PS2 is the best gaming period for me with a lot of fond memories.
My absolute favorite console generation!! I still have my entire PS2 game collection. I just can't part with it. So many great gaming memories.
The PS2 Is so legendary! Till this day its library of games is unmatched
Heading into 2021 and my ps2 still gets regular play. So many solid gold classics. What a childhood :)
the PS2 was kinda past my era, by the time I was in my 3rd year of primary school the PS3 had already come out, but I can still remember the short time I had with the PS2, It was fricking amazing!
Tekken Tag is such an underappreciated Tekken title. That game alone was worth buying a console at launch.
I just bought another ps2 for tekken tag tournament.. love that game
Had Tekken Tag and Ridge Racer V as a 6 or 7 year old young gamer around 2001. Those games helped establish my love of gaming for life.
The best visuals between 2000-2006 and still the best fighting game to this day.
Kessen is one of my all-time favorite ps2 games
I'm so glad my friend gave me their PS2 back in 2014.
Still works like a dream.
Also RIP my local used game store that died last year. I got all my PS2 titles from them.
Buy used on amazon
There seems to be a Ridge Racer game in a lot of launch lineups. Given how early they get released I think they do a good job with them. Ridge Racer DS, a launch title on the Nintendo DS, is actually my favorite racing game. Definitely NOT the “best” racing game I own, but it’s still my favorite.
My favorites: Ridge Ricer V, Midnight Club, SSX, ISS 2000 and Armored Core
My first PlayStation was the PS3; thus, I’m living vicariously through this video. Excellent job, dude!
Merci!
No problem. Thank you for watching 👍
✏️ Fantavision now as a VR version coming out. 👍
The NTSC-U/C's *_NHL Hitz Pro_* can be played online again.
SSX is still such a beautiful game damn
20th Anniversary of PlayStation 2 (2000-2020)
I fully agree with DOA2 it's one of the only launch titles I didn't trade in and kept coming back to when I needed a fighting fix.
I was a HUGE fan of Unreal Tournament, ran a small clan for a while, totally nostalgic. I still remember all these maps.
Thank you for the nostalgia my friend.
best gaming times ever. tho i still miss the ps1 just as much.
Its 2020 im still playing it
Still working on games I haven't finished or even played since I bought them
@@boosk2127 good shet, brah
My ps2 still works and the Logitech controller i purchased for it.
Weird my ps2 fat arrived today from eBay (pretty much brand new) I was playing a lot of ps2 and now this video gets uploaded. Awesome! The universe man! The universe!
Glad I could help you find some new games to play.
Yo your voice is crazy soothing i went two sleep twice listening to you when I wasn't even sleepy you helped my sleep honestly and thank you for making me dreaming about games I used to play and helped learn more about which games to emulate on my emulator
nice video! the ps2 had an enormous library of games but only a little launch title, my uncle who actually bought it first when it came to my country said that the ps2 graphics were really impressive for the time as it was the only well known console at that time, few years later my parent bought it and my childhood has never been the same ever since haha
The PS2 seems to have had an impact on all of our childhoods.
My OG ps2 died, but I have the slim unit. I’m still playing ps1 and 2 games on a Sony CRT
Love the long video nothing like that old Playstation start sound : }
It's my favourite start up sound.
@@RetroGameRater Yes sir. Would love to see you do a xbox and gamecube video like this
Then you should stay tuned for my next video.
Fantastic video mate 👍
I grew up with PS2, but I’m a HUGE Dreamcast game enthusiast and collector these days. Most are lining up with both platforms!
when we got our PS2 on launch week we got SSX too, that game was SO good.
I am acutally plaing with ps2 in 2020
I have a few times this yr.
I just beat Suikoden 5 last week on my PS2.
Do you live in Iran?
@@bassage13 Nah, good games are still worth playing long after the system gets replaced. I have in recent weeks beaten games for the NES and Gameboy as well.
Golden is the word for that era of games i'm glad i enjoyed it fully! today's consoles dont aquire even half the hype ps2 got bk in the day... for me TTTournament was the 1st game of choice...unforgettable times great video!
Kessen, Zeonic Front and Journey to Jaburo and the Jampack vol 2 were the first games I got for the ps2. Fantastic console.
Timesplitters is the best. Single player and multiplayer. I remember getting it Christmas of 2000 along with my PS2 and a multitap. Tons of fun 4 player split screen multiplayer awesomeness!! Ah the nostalgia, throwing bricks through windows trying to smash every one of them before the time runs out....
My friend used to record me footage of his PS2 games on his VHS because I didn't have one at the time haha.
It hurts my eyes when I try and play the PS2 now and the controls don't seem fluid as I remember. It's an amazing console for its time.
"used to"
lol
This would benefit from a timestamp, because there's alot of games on the video I am not interested in, and could have skipped.
Scarface was a love of mine for the PS2. Gaming really was a simpler time back in the early naughties
Fantastic video and I’ve only watched the first 5 minutes so far. This is why I love nostalgic gaming, it almost transports you to a mindset and a vibe that feels forgotten yet familiar. I will watch the full video and your others. Thank you for this content.
This video was totally worth the wait! I love the retrospective on these games and I can’t wait to see what you cover next.
Very happy to hear you enjoyed the video.
My next video will be in a similar vein so stay tuned.
Timesplitters is a series that I miss. Those games had some excellent soundtracks. Good times!
I had to call me back and edit bc I commented before finishing the video. X Squad was the first game that made me experience rage quitting and getting yelled at by my mom lol.
Just found your channel! No uploads for a while and saw you on twitter saying you have recently had a baby, congratulations! Have a great Xmas with your new son and family. Now I can binge watch all these videos! Have a great safe new years
listening to him talk about football and hockey is amazing.
also midnight club picked up in 3 dub edition....one of the best racing games of all time
SSX was the first game I purchased when I got my PS2 and it was amazing. Played it for over 2 years and never got tired of it. Lots of replay value and just seeing it in this video made me feel all nostalgic. Sadly when I was in college (in 2003) my apartment was broken into and the thief stole my PS2 along with all of the games I owned.
Sucks to hear about your PS2 being stolen, but glad to hear you had some great times with it.

Ssx was the first ever game I played the nostalgia is reeeaaal.
Jesus Christ, did it come out in 2000? I was only in my sophomore year at New England Tech Institute. What a system PS2 was. Even the PS1 was monolithic.
Great video. Might I suggest using timestamps for easier viewing as well as providing a list/name of game being displayed at the same time. Two birds one stone.
Unbelievable, some games still look very good. I wonder what's in 20 years from now.
Quite possibly, VR similar to the [Doom VR ~patch] for the NES Zelda experience.?🤷♂️
and yeah you're right, i miss that era of "arcade sports games" midway did a great job with those. nba jam, blitz, and ready to rumble. and yeah, ssx was a far superior product than its counterparts
SSX3 might be the best snowboarding game ever.
@@colonless7512 is that the one with the night snowboardin and a lot of neon rails? idk thats the image that pops into my head when i think ssx3. and the soundtrack. the soundtrack had thrice which was one of my fav bands growin up
Fun fact smugglers run is made by rockstar games
Sat really enjoying video. Then noticed your subs and was expecting a million or more. Great great video. Well done man
The PS2 was my first game console/DVD player at age 6.
Incredible video man! A fantastic trip down memory lane with some of these games! I'm seriously surprised by how good some of these games look. Also i fondly remember Motor GP, if i remember correctly you can unlock Klonoa to race as in the game!
Moto GP really caught me off guard. Seriously good looking game.
Best console I ever owned. Bought it on launch by skipping school! Not sure how I convinced my parents. Recently got a PS Classic and able to play PS1&2 games on it using Project Eris hack
Thanks for the video, great as always! Its impressive the amount of variety of games they had at launch.
It sure is.
I waited in line a little over 12 hours at Walmart to get the PS2 on midnight at launch. Purchased the system, Midnight Club and Madden. Fun times.
Punisher ps2 one of the funnest games ever made
SSX tricky i believe it was called bought it first day. Best game, i loved it.
Actually Tricky is SSX 2. The first one was simply called SSX. These days we call it SSX 2000 because of SSX (2013) released for PS3. I personally prefer SSX 2000 😊 but usually the one you like best is the first one you played.
Timesplitters was such fun, miss that game man
Ridge racer was a great title to play at the time. You could hop on GT for more sim, or destruction Derby for more arcade feel too back in the day.
🔴 GT4 Online-Beta (released for only for NTSC-U/C) can be raced again online via fan server which has plenty of people including PAL drivers as well as some Tourist Trophy tracks and other mod goodies.
That was greatly streamlined with the GT4 original release, iirc, in that each driver simply makes their respective selections just one time from among ethernet LAN'ed consoles for their respective driver/position followed by locking in their assignments for the respective angles of view for each of their screens and it's never messed with again - at worst, not during that session.
gee thanks, now i can’t help but feel a need now to own all launch titles for my collection :P
great vid, keep it up!
Thanks friend 👍
I had most of these games, non at launch as I got my PS2 the christmas after launch and only with smugglers run and time splitters, the dreamcast ones i had on that.
