I adore my Vita, though I haven't played it in some time (working from home means I can play set-top consoles or PC for most all my gaming wants now.) I do believe, though, that my absolute favorite Vita EXCLUSIVE was, indeed, its release of Hot Shots Golf, by far the game that saw the most play time on my console. That said, I also loved the Vita as a PSP replacement for digital titles: the larger screen was really nice for a lot of games, and though I don't like the stick on the Vita as well as the PSP, it was certainly functional for any game on the platform. The PS Vita is where I finally beat Ys Chronicles and played the heck out of FFIII.
No love for NFS Most Wanted 2012? I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but it's my favorite Vita game and it's considered the best racing game on the Vita by many. Walmarts around here had then for $19.99 at one point. I wish I had scooped them all up. I ended up getting one online a few weeks later for $25. But man, they had about 8 of so at the Walmart I was in when I saw the $19.99 price. Had I known, I would have grabbed all of them and went store to store. Lol.

The original Vita was super cool. Had an OLED touchscreen, dual cameras, touch backplate, 3G wireless... and the price tag of a standard at home console.
If you haven't played it, I would recommend checking out the original Persona 4 on PS2 at some point. Golden severely ruined the game in a ton of ways, which aren't as noticeable to people who've only played the game on Vita.
@@raimeundersn3177 Honestly, I can't understand how anyone could prefer Golden to the original unless they played Golden first or simply don't care about the massive problems that the additions and changes the game makes create. I could genuinely write an essay about how terrible Golden is, it's quite literally the worst port of any game that I've seen (and that's including the abysmal FFV and VI mobile/Steam ports).
I'm curious what vita oleds will be like in another 10-15 years. Even with the care i've taken to protect my system and baby it, there are still signs of the display breaking down on my 2 oled systems from use. Seen it with friends' systems too even with much less use than mine.
A system I wanted to love, but ultimately it falls short of the 3DS on software for me and fails to captivate. I still play mine occasionally, but certainly not as much as I wish I would.
Absolutely adore the Vita to this day. Easily my favorite handheld system. There were so many amazing experiences on there that never got the appreciation they deserved.
@@summersky77 I do! The vita is a great console. Tons of psp, ps1 and ps2 ports plus some full on ports of ps3/ps4 games. It's a beast of a console. Mod it and it runs a lot of emulators really well. pretty much everything up to n64. Some stuff on n64 runs full speed, some doesn't.
Oh and only the vita plays vita games. No good emulator exists, so it's the only option. This alone plus the multiple generations of official playstation gaming being represented makes it far more attractive from a historical, technological, and coolness perspective than any emulation handheld. It can't emulate gamecube and ps2 unfortunately, but still worth having and setting it up. Should get a new 3dsxl too
I bought a heavily discounted PSTV just for TxK since it’s the only system it was released for before Atari stopped it. Minter later reconciled with Atari to create Tempest 4000 which is basically the same as TxK. Thanks for featuring it Joe!
Greg's Game Room I love how no one wanted the thing and now it’s pretty valuable. I got mine discounted to 40 with 2 games. I mean, the Dual Shock it came with was worth nearly that much alone.
After watching this, I decided that I may be getting a Vita on its tenth anniversary in 2021. I called the Vita a collector's item because as Joe said it, most people bought it because of the smartphone market booming at the time. It's mostly an all digital handheld nowadays.
I would get one as soon as I can because not only for the most part keeps it's value, it is bound to get a steep price increase when scalpers notice an increase interest in the console.
Muramasa looks really good on the OLED screen. Most of my other favourite games are in the video or in the comments. I used my Vita to remote play one of the PS3 God of War compilations because my physical disc is scratched/glitched and won’t play properly on the PS3 by itself. Remote play on PS4 is also cool with a strong enough internet connection.
The biggest problem was that Nintendo was putting EVERYTHING into the 3DS that generation and ignoring the Wii U, while Sony was focusing much more on the PS3/PS4 than the Vita. I don't think Sony could really pull off another handheld again unless they put everything they have into it, as it's essentially impossible for any handheld system to go against the Switch at this point.
The Slim also uses a micro-USB charging cable instead of the expensive proprietary one. A lot of people still keep gushing over the original OLED, but I've had both and I'd pick the Slim just for the battery life and weight alone. There's definitely a lot more great games for the Vita left to talk about, so cool you covered it so early.
It was a moderate success in Japan, so many Japanese companies continues to support it long after the western support dried out. It's funny, because Sony focuses WAY more on western games on their consoles while the Japanese games flourished on their handheld.
While it really didn't sell that much even in Japan, it was enough for some companies in that country to keep supppoting it anyway since in the mid 2010 many were making low or mid budget multiplaatform games and the Vita was perfect as the lead platform for many of those projects or at least it was easy to port them to it, and also it was easy for some small western indie devs to port their games to it even if they eneded getting just okay sales. It was probably when the Switch came out and after more japanese developers started using more modern tech for their games that they stopped supporing the Vita.
Sony didn't ignore the Vita in Japan. When I was there just two years ago, Vitas were everywhere in game shops and there seems to be a lot of Japan exclusives for the system.
"dengeki bunko: fighting climax", i know edging is becoming a popular kink, but i didnt knew it was already at the " they have a fighting game about it" stage yet...
My most favourite console ever. So great that I was even developer for it. So many PS3 ports of obscure JRPGs, my God! At one time I had 4 of them, plus PS TV. I kept PS TV (nobody ever wanted it) and one of my PS Vita Slims just to play my 100+ games collection.
@@millgiass I got mine for 15 euros in electronics store where nobody even knew, what it is. Some Vita games work much better on bigger screen (like Killzone).
@referral madness I mainly did localisation for Vita-exclusive Hypertension Neptunia games, helped with theyr Steam ports (Hyperdevotion Noire for example) and helped with Neo Geo emulations (they were on PS3 as well). Funny story how SNK hired me... My specialisation is mainly Sega stuff, so I worked on Mega Drive collections and even Mega Drive Mini software. It is an absolute beast modded, well worth the effort and price it’s currently going for. If you were thinking about getting one, do yourself a favor and go for it, you will not be disappointed.
Great episode, Joe! I was actually using my PS Vita when I noticed the notification for this episode! I installed Paint Park recently; my 2 and a half year old daughter loves using that app every morning. It's a 2016 model that I bought last year with Uncharted: Golden Abyss along with 4 other titles. I recently bought Teraway and Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate. Never used it before then (but briefly played on an original Vita back in 2012 when a local GAME UK store had a PSVita booth with Golden Abyss running on it).
I wanted to love the Vita, but the memory card legit killed it for me. Things only got worse when games I was interested in started appearing on other platforms. I loved the system's build quality, the sticks were pretty okay, I liked the buttons. The OS was ...ugly. But Ys Memory of Celceta & 8 are great, play that on anything you can. Super good games. The memory cards aghhh... I had a 8GB and got a decent deal on it but it was rapidly filling with basic stuff. I was mostly playing PS1 games & they were chunky for the device. Taking up 1GB or more per game I had. Then companies started cheaping out and offloading optional languages to downloads so, I tapped out. Great system ruined by Sony's incompetence. PSP worked out far better for me. Still use it to this day and even have music still loaded onto it. Got an adapter for a microSD card and it's, VASTLY cheaper to play PS1 games on it.
It was the memory cards that killed because they started a spiral with one problem leading to another. Because the memory cards were too much people couldn’t afford to buy the system and with slow sales led to game developers dropping support and with less games people would buy the system for lee to even worse sales
I still own the PlayStation TV with a DualShock 3 Controller and a Lego Movie Video Game included, I managed to download a few PlayStation Vita titles and bought physical cartilages as well, some PSP games like first BlazBlue game, Dead or Alive Paradise, & Shin Megami Tensei Persona 3 Portable and PS1 games such as Final Fantasy VII and VIII, Xeno Gears, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I did buy Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles but it's not compatible with the PS TV sadly.
I'm surprised that Dracula X Chronicles isn't PSTV compatible, though if I recall correctly it is one of the games I had to sync to my Vita from my PS3 since the console itself wouldn't download it. I don't have a PSTV, but does it allow for that functionality? I've got several PSP games I own digitally -- like Alien Syndrome -- that refused to download straight to the Vita but worked fine when synced off the PS3.
Just softmod it and you can play the entire PSP library. I did just so I can play that game on my Vita (and overclock the CPU so I can play Ninja Gaiden 2 without frame drops).
To be fair to Tales of Hearts R, by the time it came out, Best Buy, Walmart and Target had long dropped the Vita from their shelves, so GameStop was basically the only place to buy Vita games full-stop. It's not a Final Fight Guy being exclusive to Blockbuster situation.
@k4rec4 GameCube was Pre-Alpha because of the handle.Wii was alpha because it had motion controls and casual gaming.Wii U was beta because it had motion controls and partial portabillity.Switch is final because it's fully portable but relies a lot on ports and is incredibly flawed,so Switch 2 will be the REAL final product.I personally prefer the Wii U to the Switch in terms of overall quality,so it's kinda insulting/not insulting to the Wii U if someone says it's the alpha or beta of the Switch.
I think the Wii U is far worse than the other 2, the Vita and Dreamcast have a more than healthy third party line up while the Wii U doesn't, I personally think the PC Engine or Sega Satrun deserve to be on the trio more
The Wii-U was just a frustrated attempt to mimic the success (and gimmicks) of the DS family on a standard home console, lacking on planning, on support, and without one of the pillars of DS family's success: portability. 🤷🏻♂️
I’ve had my vita, and home brewed it, for like 4 years. It’s greatness. The remote play feature is insane. I can start my ps4 at home with my vita at work... and play games on it.

A few points: 1) Outside of certain relatively short plot-centric sections, Shingu Meteorite/Kor Meteor of Tales of Hearts R is generally really hot-blooded and upbeat, IIRC. 2) Regarding Lost Dimension, don't forget that one of the main selling points is that several of your teammates are actually moles for the final boss, and at the end of every floor that you travel up the tower that the game takes place in, you enter a Danganronpa-ish court where you have to decide which of your party members is the traitor this floor. Or rather, you decide which of your party members gets executed, regardless of whether they are guilty or not. And the traitors change each game, so you may end up executing your closest friends from one playthrough in another playthrough. 3) Soul Sacrifice Delta is a significant improvement over vanilla Soul Sacrifice, with notably updated graphics, all the DLC from the original game, a ton of new monsters, locations, spells, and missions, and an entirely new faction (the Grimm, which allows you to leave your enemies' ends to Fate in addition to Saving and Sacrificing them) that is very important to the canon story, in addition to having a bunch of great quests attached to it. Also, the book belongs to an old ally of the main villain, not the main villain himself, which is an important distinction since the story and lore had some of the best writing, music, and aesthetics (basically Dark Souls/Berserk meets Fractured Fairy Tales) of this generation, with very unique and enthralling gameplay which is a weird thing to say about a Vita-exclusive arena hunting game made in partnership with the Mighty No. 9 people.

So UA-cam is rolling out forced 480p to mobile devices starting today. Computer and TV users can still select up to 1080p. So if you're getting 480p only, don't blame me, blame stupid UA-cam. It's in 1080p for me and lots of others.
I bet , the really pissed off nerd is mad about no gran turismo on ps-vita . So do I
Too bad for the 480p assholeness, the game sack picture quality is one of the best that youtube can have .

What the actual fook are YT thinking? It sucks major balls 480p ffs anyway keep up the great work 💯
Txk is from the same programmer as tempest. Jeff minter is a legend. I have been playing his games since the commodore 64.
Love the Vita. It's the best portable way to play PSP games, and I so wish that I had picked up a PSTV when they were $40 on clearance.
Lol.
Tell me about it. I was all, "VitA SuCcS iTS 4 wEEbss," when PSTVs were on fire sale. Fast forward a couple years and not only does it turn out that I was a dumb weeb all along, but that the Vita-2000 I imported stunned me with its killer library, backwards compatibility, PS4 Remote Play, AND its usefulness as a general-purpose emulator.
still remember people kicking off about the "memory card" on the Vita, since one wasn't bundled with it and they cost a fortune compared to a SD card
I don't think anyone would of really minded if they where the same price as an SD card but they where marked up really high
Some of the higher sizes were more expensive than the console itself! If there's a console that deserves to be hacked is the vita solely for sd2vita compatibility
Luckily, you can get around that with custom firmware and SD2Vita.

The vita was a solid system, Persona 4 Golden got me hooked on it
If you haven't played it, I would recommend checking out the original Persona 4 on PS2 at some point. Golden severely ruined the game in a ton of ways, which aren't as noticeable to people who've only played the game on Vita.
@@Jordan3DSThat's a pretty hot take, ngl.
I don't think I've ever met someone who preferred the original over golden.

Also the later ps4 port is actually called Tempest
Succesor?
Jeff Minter didn't come up with the concept though... since the original Tempest (not 2000) was done by David Theurer.
I'm curious what vita oleds will be like in another 10-15 years. Even with the care i've taken to protect my system and baby it, there are still signs of the display breaking down on my 2 oled systems from use. Seen it with friends' systems too even with much less use than mine.
TxK isn’t necessarily a rip off of Tempest as it was developed by Jeff Minter, who developed Tempest 2000 and 3000.

Absolutely adore the Vita to this day. Easily my favorite handheld system. There were so many amazing experiences on there that never got the appreciation they deserved.
A year later...do you still feel that way?
OK so there was a beef. I didn't know that. Thanks for the explanation! Makes sense now!
Greg's Game Room I love how no one wanted the thing and now it’s pretty valuable. I got mine discounted to 40 with 2 games. I mean, the Dual Shock it came with was worth nearly that much alone.
TxK is a showpiece for the Vita’s OLED screen.

Underrated hand-held.. I wish Sony didn't pull the plug on it..
You are nothing
The biggest problem was that Nintendo was putting EVERYTHING into the 3DS that generation and ignoring the Wii U, while Sony was focusing much more on the PS3/PS4 than the Vita. I don't think Sony could really pull off another handheld again unless they put everything they have into it, as it's essentially impossible for any handheld system to go against the Switch at this point.

Agreed. Oled in those days was just awful. Anyone remember the Galaxy S2?
So early? It’s seven years old.
I'm honestly impressed with how long the Vita ran despite it being deemed not very successful by Sony .
It was a moderate success in Japan, so many Japanese companies continues to support it long after the western support dried out. It's funny, because Sony focuses WAY more on western games on their consoles while the Japanese games flourished on their handheld.
Mostly because it can be streamed onto tv
Exactly. It’s been supported till this year!l ,With the last batch of games! The whole “Sony didn’t support it” rhetoric, 9 years later, is tiring.

Got an adapter for a microSD card and it's, VASTLY cheaper to play PS1 games on it.
they make micro sd adapters, but you have to soft mod it to use them.
All good points.
Same her why sony WHY?!
It was the memory cards that killed because they started a spiral with one problem leading to another. Because the memory cards were too much people couldn’t afford to buy the system and with slow sales led to game developers dropping support and with less games people would buy the system for lee to even worse sales
lxs077 PSP soft modders are the reason Sony made the vita memory cards they did. Ultimately the thieving hackers was the vitas demise not Sony.
I had the same issue with first person shooters. Maybe that's why I like the recommendations you give on console review episodes.
I did buy Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles but it's not compatible with the PS TV sadly.
if you hack the ps TV you can bypass it
I'm surprised that Dracula X Chronicles isn't PSTV compatible, though if I recall correctly it is one of the games I had to sync to my Vita from my PS3 since the console itself wouldn't download it.
The trio of underrated consoles:
Vita-For Anime fans
DreamCast-For Sega fans
Wii U-For Nintendo fans
Wii-U was the alpha phase of the Switch.
@k4rec4
GameCube was Pre-Alpha because of the handle.Wii was alpha because it had motion controls and casual gaming.Wii U was beta because it had motion controls and partial portabillity.Switch is final because it's fully portable but relies a lot on ports and is incredibly flawed,so Switch 2 will be the REAL final product.I personally prefer the Wii U to the Switch in terms of overall quality,so it's kinda insulting/not insulting to the Wii U if someone says it's the alpha or beta of the Switch.
@@ianeons9278 I understand your irony, and respectfully disagree.

@@thabg007 That's really cool! I was never able to pull it off like that!
A few points:
1) Outside of certain relatively short plot-centric sections, Shingu Meteorite/Kor Meteor of Tales of Hearts R is generally really hot-blooded and upbeat, IIRC.
9 people.

Never wanted or owned a vita but gamesack uploaded a new video. So I'm here!
G'day.
I recently learned how many good older games are on the psn store like a ton of pc engine games which is awesome. Another way to take soldier blade or devils crush on the go is pretty sweet. Didn’t realize how many of them were on there.
I always found my vita uncomfortable to hold after 45 mins. Particularly if the game required heavy use of the sticks. Hand cramps up.
This channel deserves subs in the millions. It will happen though
I will be disappointed If Gravity Rush isn't talked about
I am happy
I've never played a Gravity Rush game and could have picked up the 2nd game from Best Buy for $8 a couple of weeks ago, now I kind of regret it :/
I swear, you have some of the most consistently high quality gaming videos on YT. Great way to use a haircut for a skit BTW.
Just got done with another 8 hour session of Persona 4: Golden.
I keep forgetting I bought that for Steam day one lol
Oh and also I found out P5 works great in RPCS3, but either way I don't have time for 100+ hour RPGs anymore
The cost of the memory card is the reason why I didn't buy the console at launch. I had to buy a PSTV later just to play Dungeons Travellers 2.
Joe would have worn a PS Vita t-shirt but, let's face it, they don't exist.
They do, actually.
I recommend playing Gravity Rush on PS4. The visuals are very crisp on 1080p and it runs at 60 fps with little to no slowdowns and because of the enhanced textures, better draw distance and added AA, the visuals stand the test of time lot better than on the Vita. There are still motion controls for the camera but fortunately, you can turn them off in option settings. A very underrated game.
sure but please appreciate that for some of us (Siren Team fans, for example) it was THE vita game
@@kurisuchiinathecrocodile333 I can contest to this... Gravity Rush on Vita held me out until I was able to get the game I really wanted for my Vita: Hatsune Miku Project Diva F.
1st thank you amazing show
People constantly crapping on Sony whenever they did a showcase for the Vita at gaming expos was also one of the big reasons why Sony assumed people hated the Vita. So Sony probably had no idea what to think when the audience they were presenting it too was negative most of the time.
Sadly people ignore that fact because they don't want to share the blame.
