The stuff his mother did to him was inhumane. If I recall when his mother originally sued him, his grandmother testified on his behalf that he was definitely telling the truth that everything he talked about in his lyrics for songs like "Cleaning Out My Closet" was exactly what she did to him.

The thing about Em is that his truth is his truth and he drops the mic like it’s on fire. He helped me through a lot of dark times because I didn’t see that it is perfectly okay to have your truth, and rhyme it too. I choose kindness because of those dark times. What a powerful track
There is no “his truth” or “your truth” there is simply the truth. What happened to him is the just the truth. When you say things like “your truth” you make it sound like there is more than 1 objective reality when there is not. Might seem like a petty criticism of your comment, but the clarification matters greatly.

Eminem, I don't know what I'd be like without him growing up. I have no time for his new stuff just because it doesn't speak to me at all (not saying it is bad) but his old stuff raised me through some absolutely shit times. When shit was bad I'd draw him in his comics I'd buy whilst just replaying his stuff over and over. I'm nearly 30 now and always sometimes i recluse back to that person i once was and just blast Em haha. He's an absolute legend, and for me the GOAT.

I have had a happy childhood with my loving parents but very close to me, my best friend suffered from an absent father and an alcoholic mother. My parents used to buy him the textbooks, toys for Christmas etc and other friend's parents helped too. And we we listened this song for first time, he cried like a baby because he has suffered nearly all of this shit (even his older brother died for overdose).
Now, he is a very respectable lawyer but for him is still very painful remembering or talking about his family and his childhood.

His lyrics were offensive to some parents..lol. He's the reason there are "Parental Advisory" on CD's! They protested & demonstrated against him...incl the Vice Presidents wife! He was banned from MTV! He has been put through a lot!!! I have been corrected...Advisory came out in the 80's! I think its cuz of all the protestors & demonstrations against him ..I think that's what made me think that. But the rest is right! lol.

@@Sunny-jz3dy They were just a lil too honest and hard. No one had gone after their own mother before in a song. Plus, he was white so he wasn’t supposed to be so hard and angry. Little did people know, he had it just as bad if not worse than other rappers out there. He was just more willing to share, what many felt, was too disturbing of a story. I’m a huge rap fan, I prefer the early days of rap with RUN DMC, Tone Loc and Beastie Boys. However, I do really like some of Ems stuff and have the utmost respect for him.
I'd recommend actually sitting down and watching 8 Mile, to learn about his life a little more.
Song wise, his song Beautiful is a good one

You couldn't have said it better, he doesn't need to apologize whatsoever for speaking out about childhood abuse that could have KILLED him. His mother had munchausen by proxy and was putting valium, xanax, pine sol and other chemicals in his food for the attention and sympathy it got her. He easily could have died and people think the song "went too far" or that the newer song Headlights was him apologizing for them "both being wrong" like.....? No. Its not airing your dirty laundry in public when you couldn't consent to what was happening to you.

My boss/friend is one of the protesters who would get quoted on shows for protesting him in the late 90s & early aught.
He felt he was homophobic. I felt it was more nuanced although at the time use if homophobic language was rampant. So hid casual usage certainly helped bring it front and center as an issue.
Personally, I find it art reflective of the time. Much like Howl was obscene literature until it was taught on university campuses.
