- This is one of the coolest things I’ve ever learned on the guitar years back when I got turned on to Cuban music.
These piano montunos are super bad ass. I use these ideas all over the place as long as it fits. Have fun with it and take some chances!
Thanks so much, always!

Guthrie Trapp
Hey guys, this goes way past the Santana song. Please dig into the beautiful world of Cuban salsa. It’s so badass!!
You’re one of the most solid guitar players I’ve heard in my 46 years. Pure respect for how much you’ve dedicated yourself to your instrument. Love your albums
You got me into that Buena Vista Social Club album during Covid times and it’s still on heavy rotation. Absolute goldmine for stealing musical bits 👌🏻
Thank You! I appreciate these lessons.
Beginning Reminds of a song can’t put my finger on
Reminds me of a Willie Nelson song “Blue Skies “
Maybe I am crazy!😜
You're not crazy - it's used in there too.
Wes meets latin through you!
Stairway to Salsa
Not only are you teaching me guitar, you’re introducing me to new types of music and musicians. Well done Guthrie.
Shades of Johnny Rivers and Eric Burdon coming through...
First thing I heard was Mississippi half step !!
especially after he done Deal in an earlier vid!
1:35 am here un Italy: now who can go to sleep?
Watching in UK right now. Rock on GT
Hello to European guitar pickers!
@@nearlysteviedan1275I wondered where Stevie Dan was hiding!🤣🤣🤣
That Am to D9 descending thing is reminiscent of Soul Dressing by Booker T. & The MGs.
I definitely recognize that. It does sound a bit like the morning show opening song.
just watched this after watching Rick Beato talk about the "James Bond" chord, Em-maj9. Now I have some very funky sounds in my head.
Ry Cooder is great for learning, Chicken Shin Music is up there with the bedt blues albums, too.
Somebody Loan Me A Dime! In a minor blue context for the walkdown, not the A minor/D9 change or the cool Latin potential that Guthrie is laying out here. It's all just music!
You and Tom are helping and inspiring a lot of dingleberries like myself to get better...
speak for yourself
Summer Rain- Johnny Rivers. Long before Stairway😎
Thanks. Close vibe
Exactly, great playing on the Rivers track
I just love they way you play, GT! Afro-Cuban is cool. Speaking of Ry Cooder, I had a chance to see him for free in a church basement back around 1970, before he was so well known. I think he had one album out .. Into The Purple Valley, which is loaded with cool songs that I still play. Anyhow, me and my Jacksonville Navy music buddies thought we got to see this guy with the odd name. I sat on a folding chair right in front of him and was just mesmerized. I wanted to learn slide like he played, etc. Big influence. Jax Fla was musically vibrant back then. The best venue was the Comic Book Club which hosted lots of local up and comers .. Allmans, Skynrd, more. Same with Skynrd. There was a free concert in the city park, they were the band. Again, weird name, gotta go see. They were great, tight and well rehearsed, looked like they just stepped out of the swamps .. bib overalls with no shirts, etc. Their "equipment van" was a beat up old school bus with the windows knocked out and chicken wire instead. Those were sure great times!!!
"ChaCha Loco" by Joe Jackson, exactly this lick 🙏
Clapton uses that in the unplugged version of Old Love. Love it!
They call it a line cliche and it’s one worth using. Oye Como Va and a million others use it. A personal favorite along with the little interchange from Manha de Carnaval.
the good ole tasty minor line cliche... also hear it a lot in Beatles & Stevie Wonder songs. First tunes that come to mind are the Beatles song "Cry Baby Cry" (in the verses) & "Golden Lady" (Stevie song, chorus sec). Sounds especially nice in Oye Como Va too. I haven't checked out Manha de Carnaval but I'm about to. Thanks for the heads up 👊
Edit: just looked up Manha de Carnaval and I actually knew the tune....when I was studying jazz that song is one of the standards we played, but it goes by the title, "Black Orpheus"...same exact song tho, never knew til now!
also a Santana lick 👍
“In the heat of the battle” hahah 😂 Thanks Guthrie you’re the man. Great lesson
I feel you on the workouts/health programs. I've been doing the Six Pack Revolution, 75 days of no dairy, sugar, processed foods, red meat, alcohol or caffeine, plus core and HIIT workouts. It sucks, but I'm on day 60, and I'm down 15 kg. 75 days feels like long enough so that I've developed some habits that will hopefully keep me from backsliding.
Keep it going, man, develop those habits!
very cool indeed - that walkdown was used in Something - one of the greatest songs ever (well I think so)
You have some Bossa rhythms going on there too!
that chromatic walkdown from the A is what they do on the waltz part of Benefit of Mr Kite by the Beatles
The Beatles also used it(starting in Bm) in the bridge of "I'll Be Back" while singing the extended "I" in the lyric "I - - - - - - - thought that you would realize - that if I ran away...." A few people have already mentioned "Summer Rain" by Johnny Rivers, it's also used in a portion of "If" by Bread as well as "Time in a Bottle" by Jim Croce.
Miami snuck in I see!
I knew you were going to bring something back from Miami besides a sunburn. Awesome music.
Sometimes things align in amazing ways. I have been playing that descending root lick for the last week or so. The exact thing. That is wild to me.
First thought was "Stairway to Heaven", but after you added the rhythm and bounced between the 7 and 6 over the minor-3rd it sounded like "Spill the Wine" by WAR
Yup.....take that pearl ☝️🙏
I was in Miami a few years ago i went to a Cuban restaurant the music culture and music was so amazing and the beautiful ladies Oh my. Thanks now i won’t be able to get it out of my head.
God you're good. Shades of 'My Funny Valentine ' there. Great, tasteful playing. As usual.
I was in the Benuvista social club a couple of years ago. What a night😂
Mr.Trapp,
Where are you performing in New York? I would really enjoy to go to the performance and hear you play music. I just loved the way you played “You Know It Ain’t Right” with Kenny Vaughn! Roll up to New York Please 🙏! 😎👍
Please do a live UA-cam with Uncle Larry on May 1st!! We'd love to say hey!!
Uncle Larry is awesome as well
hope if you order double vinyl can also get a downloadable version with purchase (please and thank you)- can't wait to hear it!
He meant May 1st on the new album and I can't wait to get mine. 🤠
Wow, so glad for the nod to Latin music! It's all about el ritmo!
This Musician sounds really good 👍! 😎
Any West Coast love this year Guthrie? 🙏🏽
Holy cannoli! 😮
You were not kidding about cool!
Fantastic....hearing a little Wes in there too. Keep sharing your gifts!
I heard the "West Coast Blues" in there too.
It's like a spigot of flowing guitar
magic with your openings love it!
this jam is reminiscent of Marc Ribot. Check out his albums with Los Cubanos Postizos... that stuff is killer!!! Thank you Cousin Guthrie!!!
Yes it is! Love Marc Ribot
@@guthrietrappmusic love ya Guthrie... You are a treasure
Guthrie never disappoints! I personally would love to hear Guthrie tackle ' No Woman No Cry '
pretty cool george harrison used that walk down in something like the latin feel. look forward to you and toms new lp
You said March 1, and on a video with Uncle Larry you had to correct him when he said March 1. :) Excited for the record, I will be purchasing.
Merci beaucoup.
I'm still learning the fretboard, but have geeked out on music theory when I started the piano. One critique I make of some guitarists is that they don't spend enough time learning theory. I appreciate that Guthrie talks notes and not tabs.
Sounds like Marc Ribot on Tom Waits Hoist that Rag. Which was based on these rhythms.
Uncle Larry record is not coming out March 1 (as you said @12:52), but May 1. Looking forward to it.
latin lover, the women love dancing to this!
2 minutes in and I love it already
Guthrie you turned me onto Mambo Sinuendo ! 🔥🔥🔥
love your stuff man!
Was gonna add to watch later and go to bed.. but you had me hooked with those Latin lines! Thanks for the knowledge🤙
Awesome lesson, thx!!
Very inspiring ❤
listenin to my old chester n lester record yesterday...you n tommy b...cant wait to get that record...❤.
Fun stuff. Thanks Guthrie...
awesome content! insightful and swingful!
Love this video, thank you Guthrie!
I live in Miami. Glad you had a good time. We locals tend to stay away from South Beach in general from the PTSD over the years. Happy to hear you enjoyed it and kept it safe. 🤙🏽
I love Cuba and its music. I am fortunate enough to play with a group of friends whenever I'm in Varadero or Matanzas. Beautiful Island. Beautiful people.
Thanks for sharing all of this with us, when I first listened to Buena Vista Social Club I was in awe of the musicians and the music. Ry Cooder did all of music a great service in bringing the Cubano music into the world (again). Thanks brother!
Very friggin cool.
Thanks, GT.
Great stuff as always. Can't wait for the new album !
Very cool !
Great playing sir 👌👌👌
Great video, lots of fun musical ideas and incredible playing as ever. Thank you for sharing!
youre not even human anymore........! next level. while I keep trippin over the pentappragio...... 30 days til I'm in Nashville!
Awesome.
😊 Thanks for that man. You're my Savior tonight.
I started jamming with these guys last week. The guy that sings the songs can only play guitar using open D tuning. Don't get me wrong, he's very good. And the fiddle player scared me He was so good. I was invited back.
So I was Searching youtube looking for some good ideas in D and boom, a Guthrie Trapp video!!!. you sir are a true artist. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much Guthrie, this is a game changer for me!!
Wow that is great stuff. I always learn something valuable in your videos.
Just the sickest
This lesson was lots of fun :-) Thanks !
You mean MAY 1st GT on the Album? Always great quick lessons and learning. Thanks Again!

Very cool lesson Guthrie, I've been working on it since I first saw this video. Opens up some cool vibes, thanks for sharing.
Incredible playing, I just found "Uncle Larry" a few weeks ago, now you, so there is no need for any other players to get inspired from, now I also found that you and Tom have a CD coming out, I can't wait. Rock on
Good one Guthrie!
Great lesson on the Latin bits. I hear you throw this in to your live solos on occasion.
That's gorgeous.
Simple and fanrastic!!!❤
Smooth, to work on that. Totally looking forward to the new album with TB! Stoked for the vinyl!
These videos are pure gold. Thank you old chap!
