- It was long overdue to start brushing the dust off this little thing. Here are a few quick stories from where the mandolin has taken me over the years.
I’m a lucky and fortunate guy. The older I get the more I realize it.
Thanks so much, y’all.
Much more to come!

Thanks so much, y’all! Means makes than you know. We have an awesome community here!! Much more to come. We are all hitting a nice sweet spot 👍🎶😎
It must have been really inspiring to play music with John Paul Jones. I'm sure all of those guys were inspired by you as well! Cheers Guthrie
Guthrie , would be as kind as to tell me what make model speakers those are behind ya in this video ?
I really appreciate your lessons but I'm a terrible student, however, I love your stories!
Keep it up, Guthrie, between you and Uncle Larry, you two are, by far, keeping it the most real!
Much love and big respect!
What can be said about JPJ that hasn't been said? It's good to know your appreciation for the man. One of the greatest MUSICIANS in rock history. Battle of Evermore. Incomparable.
Forget the trolls. They will always be knocking at the door. Your time on UA-cam is invaluable to so many of us. Every quality channel has this same problem.
Hear, hear! Guthrie said it in the past. He’s a professional musician, not a UA-camr. The ones that get it, get it. We are lucky to hear his thoughts and ideas about the guitar along with the behind the scenes vids and stories!
"Hope everybody's first of all high"
Well it is Friday night. Working on it, dude.😂
😂
Who knew? A multiple-threat musical Swiss army-knife. Now I have to go buy a mandolin!
Thanks Guthrie. Cheers from Canada 💙
PS. I love that you & Tom post videos UNLIKE the many channels that are HIGH in production, but LOW in meaningful musical content. I prefer the "real sh*t" shared in an intimate real way! Kudos💙
Why do people genuflect to Tom B? The guy seems like a complete prick. Every answer he gives in the comment section is a dicky answer. Guthrie seems like a super nice guy.
Mandolin reign
For those of us who don’t hang in your social/professional group, hearing about the talented people with whom you associate is very interesting.
I had no idea you shred like that on mandolin! Amazing chops
ya'll just keeponrockin' dUde... such a hUgely fun and educational channel...YAAAH!!!! ;0) M
I took your video advice and learned intervals on adjacent strings all over the fret board based on chord shapes. What a game changer if you want to play “melodically” while soloing or doing fills as a rhythm guitar player. Your use of chromatics as an effective way to approach the next targeted chord tone was also a revelation put to good use. I’m sure these techniques will be motivational to anyone who has plateaued in their playing technique. Thanks, gratitude, and appreciation are due for your time and efforts.
Love the stories, Guthrie...thanks for sharing!
Wow, this released my inner Michael Flattley, insane.
I love everything that you,Tom,Brett and all that you cats bring.
A lovely humble guy, and a helluva picka
For musicians who get it, as u say, there are no better stories than musician stories. Love it. I keep thinking there could be books written about them and they'd be very entertaining for all.
Thanks for sharing. And for suddenly making me wanna pick up my mando again!
Perfect second coming of the Brits, even your own mandolin ( Dailey) He plays a mean 5 str, banjo. I would like to come back some day. Please return the IBMA to Nashville. Thank You for doing acoustic stuff. Lars
I've heard JPJ on some Nashville records. What a talent on the mandolin.
Scott Detroit I I wish I could have done something even close to that in my but Guthrie believe it or not in the 90s I played in a nowhere coffee shop and I inspired kids that had nothing to make it to the big time 10 years later they recognize me at a bar and said you remember him I say yeah, he’s big time now. God gave me the power of inspiration not to teach music not to do nothing like that but I know now is an old man.
I'm getting it man. I am not moving on. No fancy shit, just cool stuff from the basement. Learning a lot.
I’m thrilled for anybody that can live their dream, especially after years of hard work and paying their dues which I am sure you have done. Steve Winwood and JPJ…….English rock royalty. Doesn’t get any bigger than those two. You have had some great experiences. Love the stories and keep them coming!!!!
Gotta love a bluegrass pickin' party! Mike Bub is a great musician, and the McCurry's... Can't get better.
Guthrie love your video's . Leurn so much from you . Greetings from europe.
Guthrie you are so kind and humble. I got chills from your story! Please keep sharing them! Thank you!!! 🙏❤️
Great story G. So cool that you’ve got a bluegrass background
So cool man!….JPJ loves the mandolin? No surprise. They did that during their time.
Looking forward to May 1st!!!
Great stories. Lucky to be doing what you love.
Idiots always find something to talk shit about. Most of us understand with you and Buk we’re lucky to have world class guitar players who make videos for us. Thanks buddy
Love the stories almost as much as the music. I get it. Thanks for keeping it authentic.
Thats not bragging, i am doing the same thing every wednesday with guys that played for 40 years. Me 5 years, having a megablast. You guys are professionals, we are happy amateurs. The enjoy we have are the same. More of those storys GT.
Brother, I LOVE that you are playing with that "cast of characters" on that Chet Atkins tribute. You TOTALLY deserve to be in that mix. Chet will be smiling from on high... I'm sure of it! 💝
Yeah, these stories are awesome! Long live the mandolin!
The Irish is coming out!
Hey Guthrie - thank you for all you do!
I am looking forward to my first visit to Nashville….are you performing anytime next weekend? 🎸 🎸
Guthrie, I can’t move to Nashville, but these videos makes it feel like you’re my neighbor. Thanks man!
Love my mando... doesn't get as much love as it should! It adds a whole new dimension to my creativity AND absolutely gives the right hand a workout. Thanks for the video!!
Thanks Guthrie for replying to the negatives in a calm subdued manner 😊and we do enjoy the behind the scenes stuff your playing is inspirational ❤
Hey Guthrie, hi from the north west coast of New Zealand. Thanks so much for sharing your talent and knowledge. It's improved my playing heaps. I'll make it to Nashville one day.
I swear you Uncle Larry and Brett papa are the only reason I watch UA-cam!
Bravo
The thing I like about your videos is I feel like I'm hangin' out on your couch and just listening to you play and shoot the sh*t. Please don't ever get slick. 😎😎PS I saw Taj Mahal back in like 1972 and it sure is good to know he's still around. Talk about funny stories. When I was in grade school probably about 1965 our school was picked in a contest by a local am radio station to get a free performance by The Association. Well they canceled at the last minute and the replacement they got was The Spencer Davis Group. I was into all the British Invasion groups and they had their mega hit Give Me Some Lovin' at that time. So The Spencer Davis group (with Stevie Winwood) came and played in our Elementary school cafeteria for about an hour! Most of the kids wanted to see The Association so not many people showed but I was stoked to hear Winwood and his band!
Windwood is a genius..
Awesome! More please.
all the best to you all
I also love the stories. You are a fortunate son for sure. Keep it comin!😊
GT, you have the look of a happy man these days. That makes every single one of us happy. I remember in the very beginning, when you were just getting going and would put a heart on just about every comment. Now look at your community and see how far you've come on just being comfortable and sharing with us. Hope you have a great Spring and another great year. -GB
Cool stuff man! Music is the best!
love the stories
Keep doing what you are doing
GT thanx for keeping it real. Imagine trying to perform/entertain with the jerks.
I always appreciate your talent, honesty and passion.
Very enjoyable to hear True Stories,..Rare today
This is crazy that you posted this. I live in Chicago and I am as obsessed with music of all kinds as you can be. I play guitar and have a lot of them. I had to go to Nashville last minute last Sunday for work so I got the earliest flight I could so I could check out Nashville as much as I could on Sunday. The Uber driver who picked me up from the airport was a guitar player and we talked music and guitars all the way to my hotel. I went to Carter Vintage Guitars as soon as I check in and had a great time, I fell in love with a 65 Fender Jaguar. Then I had a great dinner and went down to Broadway to check out some live music. The first place I go to, I sit down and order a beer and turn around and there is this guy who I have watched a ton of his interviews with great guitar players on UA-cam, he was the guitarist in the band. The band was fantastic I had an amazing time. Then the next morning I had to go to Nashville Record Pressing for work. The Uber driver had blues playing in the car, I am a blues nut. I have seen Taj Mahal many times over the years. The driver was an older guy, I asked him if he is a blues guy and he goes on to tell me he played keyboards in the Nighthawks when he was younger and we talked all kinds of music for the entire ride. He had some amazing stories.
The point I am trying to make is Nashville, I felt like it is where I belong and I wish I would have moved there years ago and maybe started a band. I was in my place in Chicago back in the 80's and 90's. I got to see some amazing live music and met a lot of blues legends. I got to see some really great bands in very small venues before anyone knew who they were. The Black Keys, Blind Melon were a couple. Chicago has changed. I think Nashville is where I belong and this video makes me want to move there even more.
I met this really cool cat at what began as a bluegrass festival and grew into a much bigger festival on a mountain top. The cat that I met was playing a Telecaster with Rodney Crowell. He looked a lot like the guy on this channel who’s playing the mandolin. Keep pickin’ GT!
We appreciate you Sir. Thank you for sharing your music, knowledge/insight! Play on!
Guthrie, those stories are amazing. Thanks for sharing!
That Daley has the old lonesome sound.
I absolutely LOVED the stories Guthrie-thank you so much!! If I was sitting and jamming with Vince Gill, Marty Stuart and especially John Paul Jones, I honestly think that I would have died and gone to heaven !!...and I am not joking one little bit about that! I grew up in the 70s, went to Zep concerts and later in life fell in love with people like Vince and Marty. I still love the music from my child hood SO mush. When I first heard Bell Bottom Blues and the Derick and the Domino's album I went right out and got my own Brownie Stratocaster. I have been playing guitar since then. John's contribution to Led Zepplin songs is way more enormous than most fans realize. One of my favorite Zep songs ever is " Thats the way" John plays mandolin on the song. There is a great live video of Zep playing "Thats the way" at Earl's Court in 1975 on you tube.....(for those of you who are interested). Thanks again Guthrie - for everything you do. ( I am old now, otherwise I would pack up and move to Nashville LOL).....
Awesome thanks for sharing! Super cool!
Nothing but respect for you brother!
Wow, playing mandolin sure looks easy! Just look at GT doing it!
I love the story's GT! I love the Low tech genuine neighborly style of the channel. Rock on!
Thank you so much for your content. Love videos like yours, Uncle Larrys and Ford's. Real, laid back, no click bait. Just great playing, casual convo and really great lessons. Can't wait to come back to town and catch the trio again!
Really appreciate what you do on the channel, and the stories are gold. 🍻
Stay positive you're doing great work sharing and building this community 👍🏻
Thanks for letting us live vicariously through you Guthrie! The stories are awesome. 😎
Awesome stories! Looking forward to the new record.
Great stories! More mandolin humor please.
Sounds great man!
Damn it GT . I digress ✌🏻🎸🎶
Guthrie, you are the BEST! Ignore the haters. Love you brother. Thanks for sharing your endless knowledge with us and always keeping it real.🤙🏽😁💙
cant wait for the record! Love the bluegrass and mandolin vibe so much too! Would love to learn more of those chops
Love my Eastman md315 mando (the best mando under 1k IMO) and agree that it helps. Needs a refret from being played so much (but not as of lately as well). Rock on!
I remember you made a video where you talked about chord embellishment. You specifically held down a chord shape and embellished it in one position. I recently saw a video about joe pass talking about how he approaches chord embellishment + the CAGED system. Your approach is very similar to Joe Pass', so i figured I would ask you. Wish you well and thank you for everything.
John Paul Jones.....yahoooo .....Ive heard of him😀😀
Got it, love it - waiting patiently for the vinyl
You are SO talented, dude! Love you for that, along with your ability and willingness to share it. We met briefly about 2 1/2 years ago.. hope to see you again sometime soon! Take Care Guthrie!!!
Guthrie, it's so great to hear someone who is happy and grateful for where they are in life. I'm really happy for you. Years ago, I dedicated myself to being a husband and parent. This week my oldest child, a daughter, got married. To see a daughter establish her own home in a wonderful relationship with her new husband has given me joy that I can't even put into words. Stay inspired and keep inspiring!!
Thank you so much for sharing your Artistry and Mastery and love for the guitar and for music! I can't believe anyone would bother to criticize video production or anything else when they are lucky to be able to hear from a professional who's willing to share his knowledge and tips and experiences as a working professional. Thanks again and best of luck to you Mr Trapp!
Guthrie, You Tom and Jedd are so genuine and giving us a peek behind the curtains is such a cool thing to do. The tips and tricks that you guys share is so unselfish and helpful. The stories you guys have are so interesting.please keep them coming. !!! Im 63 and cant get enough of this content!!
Your vid came up on my feed, and it brought back a ton of memories of when I lived in Galatin, TN and worked for the Gretsch company when it was owned by Charlie Roy. We went into Nashville a lot for the music scene. That was in the early 80's. One of 😢the best memories was going to a farm outside of Nashville where the music crowd gathered for pickin parties. There was a barn in a field and group of pickers would be scattered around and they would migrate between groups for hours at a time. Thanks for the memories
Great stories
Wow, incredible stories. !!!
Great stories, thank you. Keep em coming,
Well, I enjoyed this tremendously. You are a cool guy and I love your storytelling and you sure do pick on that mandolin so carry on and enjoy. I’m glad you got such a good way of meeting up with all those musicians. Sometimes I wish I could stumble in to some of those little cats that out, it would be so much fun❤🎉
Guthrie you are a great musician and I think even a better human being. Thank you for all of the positive vibes you give us.
Thanks for sharing Brother. Much Love
Yeah man - that's how it's done! Gotta pull out and dust off my mandolin!
Back in the Highlife again, GTO.
YO! Mr. TRAPP, That was Fkn awesome!
I missed out on tickets to the Bitter End next week...I'm hoping to get in Standing Room after work.
Thanks for what you do
Having lived here for 35 years, I get it and I appreciate it, too. Thx for the great stories GT!
Wow. Incredible stories. Love it
Video quality is just fine! Music first. Great joy in that mandolin playing.
what a treat. sure like your enthusiasm. I was in Nashville last summer and had a blast seeing Boz Scaggs at the historic Ryman.
For what it's worth the reason I like and watch yours and Tom's channel's is because of the authenticity.
Yep, only in Nashville!! 👍👍
Dang, GT!! Killer chops on the mando!!
What a beast!
“First all! I hope everyone is… hi!” I was literally just having a toke 😂💨😶🌫️
top jokes today GT - I'm now in the embarrassing position of stealing your licks and your jokes!
Good stuff Guthrie! Always enjoy your music and videos!
