    This version of Ashford is much more interesting than what they originally did in the books. In the books, Ashford actually can't handle the pressure of leadership and also goes insane, becoming an antagonist. Here, Ashford actually is coming from a logical and honorable perspective.

      That's one of the things I love about this show, no one fits into one catagory (good/Evil). Even Errin Wright, as much as we would all oppose what he did we can at least understand his perspective and what made him do what he did. Same with Jules Pierre Mao, he thought he was doing something to protect humanity he just went to extreme lengths that most would not.

    26:35 Protomolecule was sent to our solar system billions of years ago to build the ring gate. It got pulled into Saturn's orbit and became its moon until Protogen Corp discovered it there and unleashed it on Eros, finally giving it the means to complete its task (a.k.a. The Work). It's trying to report back to its creators, but it's getting no replies because the builders were destroyed. When Holden activated the recording in the "library" of the station in the middle of ring space it showed him how the builders tried (but ultimately failed) to stop whatever was attacking them by destroying the solar systems it was connected to and closing the gate.

    So the show never really explains the “order” of how things happened in the distant past, and I’m not far enough in the books to know if they clarify, but I think the “weapon” feature of the protomolecule/the station was not the original function. This might make more sense after next episode, but I think they figured out how to use it as a weapon or alter it to do so, in response to a threat. It was building roads… well, you can weaponize a bulldozer too.

    • @godmathias
      @godmathias Рік тому +6

      The later books get more into the ring space and explanation but you mostly have it right. The station serves a lot of purposes and can do a lot. But its not a weapon, it's not aggressive, its defensive.

    • @Timmayytoo
      @Timmayytoo Рік тому +5

      Humans weaponized the protomolecule - creating the Caliban hybrids was entirely a result of human manipulation of the protomolecule. Left to its own programming, the protomolecule built the Ring, giving people access to the "hub". It makes complete sense that it would have defensive measures built it, and based on Holden's vision, it probably includes countermeasures intended to combat whatever it was that was killing off the Progenitors.

      @@obelisk21 I got that vibe from drummer already in this show. Both Dawes and Fred acted oddly familiar with her (at least I thought it odd at the time). Recall her conversation with Naomi about how Dawes and her rescued Fred? When Naomi commented that it must have been some conversation that turned Fred's disastrous path away from ruin, Drummer replied with "It was more than talk." with a force that made me think something heavy was involved. Like maybe a relationship of sorts? I'm still not sure, but I like the conspiracy theory...

    In the books, Naomi was never on the Behemoth and was on the Roci when it went through the Ring. For the series, though they needed an engineer aboard Behemoth, and the character that was there, in the book, was subsumed in Drummer back in Season Two looking at the damage Roci took at Thoth Station, so the writers/showrunners went with expedience rather than create another new character.

  • @tomaszmankowski9103
    @tomaszmankowski9103 Рік тому +4

    The discussion was quite mind blowing. I won't say if you are right or wrong obviously...
    Ashford. I think this is one of those moments when he bacame a great character. Old, grizzled veteran commander who knows where to lead by example. Originally I saw a flaw in the story because to me Mars and UN officers seemed too easily agree with him - a Belter and a criminal they should despise. But, but... there is a lot of sense give he is a well known pirate and there has to be some respect shared between members of a space navy community given the conditions they are working where so many things can kill you. It is like with XVIIIth century naval officers - your enemy is your enemy, but the sea itself can kill you all in a moment.
    Anna and Amos. Clearly another person who is influencing Amos this season. We can be certain she is seen by Amos as someone needing his protection. I think there is a lasting impression left by Prax whose soul and personality was saved by him not a long time ago, but Anna is perhaps the most gentle and forgiving person he has ever (?) met, who cares for other people so much.
    The Aliens. At this moment we have no idea if they want anything from the Earth except something they are using to build their space roads. Given how early the protomolecule payload was sent in the direction of the Solar System life on Earth could be less advanced than even oxygen breathing creatures.
    Buuuuut it encountered intelligent life and built the Ring from people of Eros, which might be unplanned, unwanted or... just utterly meanigless to the race which is using the protomolecule. As Holden said - they could see us as nothing of consequence, just a minor obstacle for their road project. This way we are close to nothing to the Aliens which really could hurt our self-esteem, but is it not possible? At a certain level of development a galaxy wide civilisation might see even intelligent beings as nothing worth any effort and especially not worth saving...
    That might be one of the most realistic way the First Contact is treated in a sf show - in a way it ceases to be the First Contact at all because the orther side doesn't care about us. It is way, way closer to Strugatskys' "Roadside Picnic" or something from one of Stanisław Lem's novels rather than some great revelation with Volcans or a Q testing our civilisation.
    Take care!

    When Holden went into the nucleus it produced gravity in defiance of physics, however, it did not create an atmosphere for Holden out of nothing, but rather by repurposing matter in the nucleus to create the atmosphere from unused sections. However, when the Martian Lieutenant's grenade destroyed its "manipulator/robot" it had to replace the matter.

    Minor corrections from your speculations (spoiler-free):
    1) The extra-solar object carrying the proto-molecule, Phoebe, was capture by Saturn, not Jupiter... It would seem 'close enough' since Saturn is the next planet out, but it's twice the distance out from the sun as Jupiter, so not so close after all. (This part is actually true. Phoebe is a real "moon" of Saturn, and it originally comes from outside the solar system, so Phoebe was not formed with Saturn's other natural moons! We suspect that it came from the Kuiper Belt, a nebulous region on the outskirts of the solar system, or the Oort Cloud, a much bigger and more distant sphere of debris that envelops the whole system. Those two regions are where comets come from. The fictional part is the proto-molecule -- As far as we know, it is not real.)
    2) The Mormon ship was planning to go to Alpha Centauri... the closest star to us, 4 lightyears away, and NOT to the Andromeda Galaxy, which is over 2.5 MILLION lightyears away (i.e.: Not accessible even with StarTrek-level technology!). Yes, I realize that you actually said, _"Andromeda System"_ , but there is no such thing. ;-]

      2) No. The intended destination was Tau Ceti, about 12 light years away.
      it's a single star, and not a trinary star system such as Rigil Kentaurus (Centauri A)/Toliman (Centauri B)/Proxima Centauri system, and therefore Tau Ceti would have far more stable orbits.
      Back when Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham were writing the series, it was well known that Tau Ceti had about 10 times the rocks and dust as our own solar system, but despite that it had already been identified as one of the 10 best candidates within about 100 light years for having the possibility of life.
      That's because it's sun is spectrally quite similar to our own, although it has only 78 percent of the mass and is relatively metal-poor by comparison.
      Amusingly, "Leviathan Wakes" was published in June of 2011, which meant Ty Franck had been working on the setting for a number of years, by then, and then he and Daniel Abraham started the series in 2009-10.
      Then, in 2012 -- about 18 months after "Leviathan Wakes" hit the shelves -- astronomers found that Tau Ceti had at least five "super-earth" planets, two of which fell inside that star's "goldilocks" zone, and likely had at least a few gas giants, as well.
      So, yeah. Ty Franck sure could pick 'em. 😎

    Guys, you're overthinking this! When Holden says the protomolecule's task was to build roads, that's just it: connections between solar systems to enable interstellar travel. In The Expanse, there is no faster-than-lightspeed travel, but the Rings and the station provide shortcuts. To build them, the Ringbuilders sent protomolecule to distant star systems on asteroids, which must have taken millions of years to reach their targets. The Solar System was one target, but the road construction vehicle got stuck.

      There's some prototypes of similar "exoskeletons" that have been around for years. They're mostly being developed for jobs like factory work so that workers can lift significantly more weight and also not get fatigued as much, but an obvious offshoot is for people with spinal or other mobility issues. Haven't seen much about progress on them for a couple of years, but I'd assume there's still companies working on development. Although, automation and AI might have replaced the utility of using them for workers and things like stem cell treatments may eventually eliminate any utility they'd have in the medical field so maybe they've stopped working on it in favor of other solutions.
