The only thing I am really disappointed by is the fact that the industry has not replaced Planetside 2 with a better 1,000+ player MMOFPS.
Instead, the MMOFPS dies, and that's the end of that.
This is also the reason I and so many others are unreasonably attached to the game, its not that its a super amazing game, its simply the ONLY one we have and when it dies thats it.

They have needed a server merge for along time. Connery and emerald merge into a central server so it’s win for everyone.

As long as Emerald doesn't get merged with Miller or Cobalt. God knows those servers hold onto the lions share of hackers that get their monthly circle jerk session in by fucking over everyone who still plays on them.

A merge would help a lot
The last ten years of PS2 remind me on these movie scenes where one guy keeps trying to reanimate a wounded person and the other people around look at each other like "Jesus Christ, the guy is f(&/ng dead".
i never knew the game for long but i got 1.5k hours of absolute joy from this hell hole callled auraxis

I thought the bit about marketing was kinda funny too. I think I actually did a double take when I first read it. I just wish it had been marketed more and that I'd discovered the game years before I did. I still haven't achieved all the goals I set out to complete in this game. Also, if the game is on it's last legs then it's kinda sad that I will probably never git gud. Wail. Gonna login now.

I work in a Game Dev Company and last year they fired 30% of the company and 80% of the designers.
They are only going to hire designers and devs on a contract bases of around 1 year. No more undetermined contracts. They did this to make it easier to get rid of people they don't need. I got extremely lucky that I remained and that I have the big contracts.
They seem to be approaching PS2 development in the same way.
May I ask why that happens, is the videogame industry dying or some typa shi or what happens
@@tennoo160 just my two cents, but it's overhype about AI. The same shit was attempted in the film industry last year, and if it weren't the case that very recognizable faces put their collective foot down, they would have steamrolled actors, writers, etc with veritably no pushback. That is in an industry with a lot of very famous personalities, whereas in gaming... well, yeah, there are some well known names, but not really at the base level. Texture artists (ai art generation), coders (chat GPT) etc are all replaceable in the eyes of the financially incentivized. It's going to be a dark age in gaming as the soul that is an integral part of game design is basically ground into pancake flour. There's little chance that there will be any severe consumer backlash to what is happening and they know that.

1. What is a game? Is Facebook a game? Should it be a game? Should people playing games do it willingly?
These might be questions going over your head as a non developer but a lot of dark and cynical mines are at work in the board of directors of every company I worked for and with whom I worked for. Imagine a world where you pay money for a bus ticket and then you have to compete in a minigame with other people to get the ticket. Imagine being trained to believe that this is normal and acceptable. The things I hear these sociopath speak about would make you think they were on dr@gs - and they probably were.

The Millennial generation is reaching for it's 40s and no longer has the time and will to pay for video games. Also, our abandonment of them in favor of the Zoomers did not help our cause. The main issue with the millennials was their knowledge of how things were before microtransactions in Premium games. This made them a liability as they were less likely to pay for extra things. So, they were abandoned, ignored, and sometimes demonized. The Golden Aged of Gaming ended sometimes around 2014.
The Zoomer generation, unlike the previous one were mostly from China, were freemium games existed from the beginning. They came already trained into the idea of paying in instalments, so we focused our attention on them. "This generations movies and games were made for a Chinese teenager". That is why the Golden age stopped in 2015 and we mostly moved to either making mobile games or converted premium IPs into freemium. Baiting you with the promise of something more under a shallow and repetitive game loop that kept you in our games for days at a time which eventually made you open up your wallet to your current time-investment. As the Ubisoft CEO once told us, when I was part of that company, "Time wasted by them is money in the bank for us, a debt which they eventually have to pay." Human beings tend to invest more into things they have already invested either time or money. Either you buy a game for 60-70-80 dollars and don't find it fun or you spend 3 months in a freemium product and don't find it fun, it's the same thing in the end - you pay us money to make it fun.
Edit: The Alphas are mostly from India and Indonesia and they are poor as hell and we don't see them buying games. So we have to rethink what we are gonna do. Which is probably to farm the previous generations. Especially the Boomers who always think they know better so they are less likely to acknowledge that they are being swindled out of their money.

3. Most new people in the industry don't have the drive to try things on their own, and neither do they have the skills to do so. There are stories and sorties about all branches of development. Some come from non-game development areas, like banking, and are surprised at the amount of work they have to do and how little they are payed.

While the roadmap looks dire, it at least tells me the new devs want to take things slow as they learn the ridiculous code that has compiled PS2 over the years.
It doesn't change mine or many others opinion of the future of PS2, but after years of overpromised, under delivered expectations across gaming including RPG, I can respect the new team for being honest.

I'm willing to be as optimistic as the optics will let me; I have been on a bit of a break from PS2 whlle waiting for something good to drop, or at least some news, and if they can deliver a good enough update to give me even one more great PS2 experience before it ends (if that's where it's heading), then they will have done more in one year than the old team did in the last four. I'll give them a fair chance to prove what they can do with the game, and if that turns out to be empty, well, I guess I'll start getting a care package ready to set by the tomb of my old friend, Planetside.

I hope to see us struggle on just a little bit longer. I love Planetside 2, and I hope to see us keep on going. I don't want to lose what this game series has, especially because it's been a big part of me.
- Edit; I'd also like to add the fact I really, *really* hope they try to pour some stuff into marketing. Planetside 2 is a game that has thrived off of word-of-mouth, as stated in another comment.. If we could see new trailers, or at least a campaign to get people to want to join in (rewards for inviting friends, mutually beneficial probably), I'll be happy.
Things are looking grim, but not impossible. I'm liking that there is some change, acknowledgement of issues, etc. the game could die in 6 months, it could die in 6 years. All depends on the revenue, etc. I've played empty and dying games before that are still somehow around.
This is the first game I've actively recruited friends and family for. I want to see the playerbase rise. I market it to people all the time. They need to run a hype worthy ad campaign or something...sometimes they work and can be done cheaply.

This feels like when broadsword was given SWTOR, ultima online and dark age of camelot. This is going to be planetsides retirement home. Theyll iron out bugs, maybe tweak some balance numbers here and there and even add a gun or two occasionally alongside cosmetics. We wont see though anything massive. I question some of the roadmap like the new mods and facility

From my view, the doom saying crowd has been wrong. If they had given a timeline, they would atleast have had a guess to evaluate.
I will still hop in and enjoy while it lasts. A shooter with little invisible walls, freedom to be useless (No toxic "meta enforcers") and permanence (This base is mine if you don't capture it back) is really awesome. Best gaming experience in my life hands down.
There was no competition and that is the real reason it is drying up. Planetside 2 is alone in its niche, and its starving.

So far... no other game has delivered the amazing air game mechanics PS2 offers. It was fun while it lasted.
I'm curious as to why you skipped out the update in Q4 with the new vehicle, new weapons, entirely new 'theme' we don't know what that will be, entirely new lore development etc? All of this stuff they've committed to in their development letter and they had quite a lot about how they intend to write more story into the game.
Also surely with a shift in studio we expect there to be some lag on the original development plan for resourcing and getting up to speed?
I might be being too positive but it does sort of feel like a lot of people have decided 'it's over' and are now interpreting this as far as possible to mean 'it's over' when there are so many other ways to interpret it.
half a year i started my own outfit on miller. We are now 350 members and im one of the only platoon leaders remaining and playing under the week. It hurts to know that what ive built up is slowly going downhill but [Etpk] will win the NC alerts until the servers shut down ! :D

Got that sinking feeling. Hopefully this won't just be a dragged out killing of the game as it's tossed from dev team to dev team. Going to miss Rouge Planet, they've done some great stuff over a short period.
But i'm a bit hopeful that they'll look into a PS3 at some point. It must be on everyone's mind.

I wanted to come back to the game like 3 weeks ago. I played on Connery since BETA, even tho I have better ping on Emerald.
Sadly, at Saturday... in between 18-20 hrs... the server had a pop around 30-50 ppl (between all 3 factions)...
I played like 20 minutes, flyed around for a bit... and then quit again...
I really hope they DO merge some servers...

Yeahhhh as a Connery main myself the low pop is... Depressing. but switching to emerald was a breath of fresh air, even if I have to start anew. And I'm praying that if/when they merge I can bring my top tier stuff to the big fights on emerald! I'll see you on the front lines!
Well ones PS2 dies i do think that will be it for me in gaming. Quite honestly. There's been many games over the years but nothing has managed to take planetside 2's place no matter how you twist and turn it. Planetside 2 is and will be one kind of a game. Ones planetside 2 dies, that's it and i got to say the future in gaming looks to bleak to bother playing anything. Most games that comes out these days has less then half of what all these old games ever had yet tries to build something off it. Planetside 2 came out rocky, but it always had that open world and it always had the player choice. Most games simply doesn't have that and we'll probably never gonna get another game as planetside and if we do it's gonna be a dummed down, lame version of it. Planetside went on too strong and honestly nothing today can compete with what planetside 2 is as an established title. Rivaling it is close to impossible.

Not going to lie, this seems like a semi/good thing to happen for this game, a company is actually interested in this game, and maybe the new devs will actually bring planetside2 back, even if slightly. I'm going to miss rogue planet for sure, especially wrel, but I am optimistic that this might just be a good turn in planetside2's history

I love ps2 altho i havent played it in years by now, there are issues with the game but overall its just amazing and i think people underestimate its potential. I really wonder how there were never plans for a new release or even more confusing no other studios trying to make a ps2 like or even a kickstarter for a game like this since i bet that would take off with a bit of marketing, the fact there is no game like it out really is insane to me. There is so much potential getting wasted by bad devs and game designers its sad, i miss old ps2 and everything the game stands for even to this day.
It's worth clarifying that Rogue Planet Games, indeed, does still exist. It hasn't been shut down. It is simply no longer working on PlanetSide 2, and is instead developing brand new titles.
What new titles is it working on? Again it still exists on paper as I said in the video, and there are a few people on linked in that still identify as employed by RPG, but I expect those people to be swiftly shifted to other studios.
@@CMDRCyrious We don't know specifically, but a recent investor report noted that they were working alongside another studio under the Enad Global 7 banner on a as-of-yet unreleased "multiplayer action shooter based on a major
global IP license" to be released in mid-2025. That title has received significant funding, more than any game recently but H1Z1 in EG7.
Looks to me like the final stages of Planetside before they shut it down.
I think everyone knows it's over, it would be the best time to merge the servers,
1 EU server, 1 US server.
That way it can atleast go out with a bang, semi-active servers.
Because currently emerald is the only server that has a decent pop.

They shoulda done server merges 6 months ago & sent the sunderer rework 2 months ago.
With the economy as a whole going deeper and deeper into recession, this is when we will see the bankrupting and collapsing of businesses and games that cant keep up. PS2 has been among my favorites for years though I haven't played it as much due to lag, but I do not forsee it surviving the recession to come out the other side.
With games like Helldivers coming out that explore mmoFPS from other angles, and open world games are become more the standard in so many ways, I do envision that someone will step in and say "hey, there is a market no one really is capitalizing on." and develop a game in the vision of PS2 even if it is not within the IP or feel.
In personal unpopular opinion i think we should move dev focus on making the next planetside game implement things that went right with POS2, an then have a mess free code bass to implement all the new and exciting ideas that flopped or we couldn't implement now, with updated graphics cant see that going badly. Oh and a bigger marketing budget.
That roadmap was depressing I mean the sunder and facility updates are needed but those where needed years ago. It's really the businesses fault here they have a one kind of a game on their hands and decided to do nothing with it because it wasn't "hot" at it's time. So instead of fixing and making something great, they let it sit. Truly if the community cares they won't do what the galaxy guys did with starwars hanging onto member berries by just keeping a dead game on life support but come together and challenge the thrown and make a new mmo game.
Only one game comes to mind with massiveness and that is foxhole a game like this can be done. But you all have to get together and try because look at that map a whole year for two real updates you either running a 5 man crew or a single dude to really be putting updates out like this. For once guys put your money into a future not a memory. That's my peace.

@@CMDRCyrious the funny thing about foxhole right now they actually had in the Navy that has a purpose. If I had to really think about what the biggest thing that should have been on track and should have been added from the start was a resource system. Something of that nature. Just to go off a little bit here a lot of video game MMOs keep avoiding this very important pillar. Death and decay, as scary as that sounds I think it was the most important thing you can add into a game that helps developers more than they realize. Items without any decay a battle or resources never drain a map that never shifts around that kind of system of upkeep. I can go on more explanation but I'm doing this through a phone and I got work to do. But I hope you understand what I'm trying to say play world war items never decay or break or a world with no resources to keep players in check from a constant endless fight makes it harder for the developers to keep their audience entertained what's new and fresh content.
I rather simply enjoy the game as it is and rest optimistic, not make wild predictions and dwell on the negative. There are still 600+ players every day during the evening, multiple platoons with cool leaders, and everyone is just having fun. It may be called copium, but it really is not, it's called playing a game like any other. I do take a break from the game every now and then once I don't feel like playing it. Playing the game every single day non-stop for months will inevitably lead to burnout, hence the rage and negativity you see everywhere on Reddit and elsewhere. This unfortunately happens with any other game, not only PlanetSide 2.
Yeah. It is over, Planetside 2 has been awesome and I have been enjoying greatly but everything dies eventually and it is only natural I guess. Perhaps if we are lucky we'd see another proper Planetside game one day that is not some BR bs.
I actually stopped playing after the last outfit wars. i mean I tried to keep going for a little while, but I just quickly lost interest. Most of the people I played with have moved on, and finding people who enjoy the gameplay I do is actually very hard. So... I've gone to play other stuff.
Maybe Planetside 2 will improve enough in the hands of the new developer and I'll find some incentive to come back, but until then... my time in PS2 has been over for about half a year now.

@@CMDRCyrious Should come as no surprise that one of them is Helldivers 2. Outside of that, I've dabbled with Palworld, Enshrouded, Stellaris, Remnant 2, Deep Rock Galactic, Frostpunk, and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Been a good time these last few months, though I do sometimes wish I had more folks to play with. PS2 at least had that going for it.
Same here man. HD2 is where its at now. PS2 just can’t compete anymore. It’s old, stale and archaic. I loved my time but that time is over. Even if they revamp and add things to it, for me, it’s too late. I’ve lost interest.
@@carl5381 Yeah, and I've heard a few people say Foxhole is the next best thing to Planetside 2, but Foxhole doesn't keep my attention for very long. Helldivers 2 might not have as many people to talk to, but at least I don't need to stress about supplies in it.
Respect for getting their people out of Russia. Despite some unkind things I might have said about Russians in the last 2 years, I do understand that it is important to separate a nation's people from its politics, even if I don't always remember that I know that.
As for the dev cycling, I get that they want to poke the new toy, but I am in the camp hoping for a quick wind down so that the new IP owners can either get going on PS3 themselves, or find a buyer who will think about it. As I see it, at this point every day that PS2 remains live sets PS3 back a day. In the mean time, I'm enjoying myself over in Foxhole, which has many ex Planetsiders. One of my favorite moments so far was burying GreenJuice in a grave he dug for himself. (He intentionally dug foxholes in annoying places, got teamkilled, so Drunk Divison threw his body in one and filled it in with shovels) It's a very different game with it's own set of problems, but it scratches a lot of the same itches as Planetside, and I really liked the way the logi system works after walking away from more than a decade of Planetside unlocks. There's no personal progress unlocks, everything is made and distributed as a team. The guy who bought it today has access to the same bunker stockpile on the front line as the guy who's been in since the beta.

It’s a shame that they didn’t do the same for the players of the russian server, when they confronted the players with the fact that all the accumulated time and money would simply be lost without profiles migration.
@@Galy4a Bit of a difference between someone needing support to actually move out of a country that has caused such problems and someone wanting to be sheltered from the consequences without having to put anything up. Many Russians have voted with their feet and it [annoys me] that so many western governments are doing everything they can to turn them back. That said, given the stakes I don't really have much sympathies for those who've lost...a computer game character.
People left (and not as many of them as you say) not because of Russia but because of Western sanctions, they just wanted to keep their jobs or access to foreign bank accounts. The same goes for people who have lost access to their data in foreign services. The reason is the same.@@Markfr0mCanada

i wonder if theres any hope for a planetside 3. im not very well versed in what tech is required to run an MMO like thism but with games like foxhole and battblebit being popular and made by skeleton crews, i cant help but think someone else buying the ip down the road to make a true successor with more stable gameplay on an updated engine is a possibility.
Evil V Evil looks like a cheap rip-off of Killing Floor (on which toadmen have worked on). Killing floor is a very niche PvE game and I don't see how it has a chance to captivate an audience and at the same time occupy the studio.
Re-focus on Planetside is more likely in my eyes.

I think with Toadman onboard we still have awhile, I think it will just be slow going to get anything, and the scope and scale will be smaller. More of whatever the past year of development was. Some people seemed to like it, I thought it was dismal.
I think the thing that's well and truly killed this game is that even on the bigger servers populations are getting unsustainable. Fights are devolving into 3v3s and 2v5s which naturally aggravates class balance in a way that just genuinely does not matter in a large scale conflict. Even towards the end you'd see people trying to farm infantry with air to ground ESFs. You can't expect to keep new players if that's the environment they're going to join into.
@@Dystinction1idk about the Asian servers but the spawn camping with armour and air is especially horrendous in Connery, but it seems emerald is ok? Either way I love this game too much to leave it.

Also I know people on PC complain a whole lot about console but its here and it needs to be addressed. Despite the opinion of PC players, console community is actually still pretty big. People just dont wanna play much anymore because theres no updates coming in.

Rip Planetside 2 it was fun, but sadly it could have been allot more. Such lost potential.
It may be an unpopular opinion, but I'd rather PlanetSide 2 just close down at this point and be replaced with PlanetSide 3 using an all-new engine, a big reduction in the cert grind, and new features to attract new players.
Planetside will always be somewhat fringe. The majority of the profane masses simply can't handle it.
70/30 the ratio of what the problems were/are in Planetside 2.
70% was/is the player base. Always whining and crying to nerf/buff this or that. No, no please move this base and change this I promise the game will be better said all the instant experts that just started playing the game. New players never took the time to learn and always expected to be good because they played this or that 64 player game.
30% was the net code that made the game clientside. Was it because there weren't servers that could handle all the bullets, player movement or vehicle movement when this game first came out in 2012. Surely a Ryzen Epic 128 core server could handle the work load today; right? Or is the net code so fubared that the game would have to be re-coded from scratch on a new game engine like Unreal Engine 5.
If they do come out with a Planetside 3 at least make it have a monthly subscription fee of let's say less than $5. Just enough to not have to rely on whales or in game purchases.
As far as hacking was concerned I never saw many out right hacks in the game. What I did see when Hives were in the game was a ton of glitching to place construction items in unreachable places below to the map.
My personal opinion is that the game was just too hard on most new players. Add to that CAI; that totally changed vehicle combat, and that led to many other changes that diminished the risk/reward play style that this game required.

hey, playstation players here. wtf!? nothing has happened AT ALL for the last THREE YEARS. Esamir wasn't even fixed after foxdas and I came on the stream, they just permalocked it and it has been that way since late 2021. i dont care at all about poor little pc's sunderer reworks or your capture the conduit. i want to be able to play all of the continents in the game, especially one we had at ps4 launch.
Former Playstation player here, it's been dead on PS4 and I doubt it's ever getting better. We got the scraps from PC and were always an afterthought.

@@CMDRCyrious i dont think it was a "3" it was just a spin off. with the same strategy like soe had and with preventing spaghetti code it could be a banger. or they simply dont get a budget. marketing is very important and daybrake or who fcking ever should advertise this game im some way. youtube ads, instagram, tiktok everything is possible and affordable these days. this could be a way to attract players to ps2 too and maybe the chance for 3 is much higher.
gonna be honest. i dont see planetside recovering from a hit this big. frogman will keep the game on life support but beyond that i highly doubt it. theyll just reuse old events and finish what the devs were working on and then just abandon the game completely. its over everyone. just go find a new game

I think one of the problems planetside has always had, and this has been said a million times. The player base is so fucking whiny and pessimistic, you can see it in these comments. Anything that happens: "dead game", "rip game" etc etc. When that is a large proportion of the talk around the game, it only makes it die quicker and less appealing to new players, i've seen the same shit for 5+ years. Planetside dies when it dies, and its not dead yet

Who cares anymore the game runs terribly unless you watch like 10 videos on how to make it batter and even then..Auto fire is bad head clicking and hip fire only which is lame. The server are laggy as hell and the game is just dated. Like just move on boys. Oh and the hackers almost forgot..
