Nice. I've always considered that factory ram air a well-designed piece. You're bringing back memories of my old co-worker. Used to go to lunch in his 02 ws6. Man that thing was a ripper for just a factory ls1. He used to lay rubber through the first 3 gears with the all seasons on a hot day. I haven't worried about Air intakes very much lately. Last two cars I've had we're boosted with a giant front mount. So it's pretty irrelevant in that situation. But for N/A cars where its all about that timing advance. It's definitely crucial, you did the right thing. Especially if you're running stop lights on the street. Sitting at a red light getting ready to go from a dig and those temps are just rising.
I know this was along time ago lol, but was there some room between the very front lip of the air intake box, and the INSIDE front edge of the ram air hood? Thanks!
Where did you find the air box? See some on eBay but kinda speedy. Also picked up the same hood you have and looking for ways to make the ram air function. I deff like what you did so going to prob build the same thing. Thanks for the video. Also have any insight what I need to do to change my MAF to something similar
The one other thing I would be concerned 😟 about is the lack of a rain / water baffle, the factory hood on my ws 6 has holes on underside to drain off moisture . Love the roar at wide open throttle.
Those hoods have a rain/water baffle, he cut them out to clear the LS box but the LS box doesn’t pull air from above it pulls from below so a baffle isn’t needed
I got rid of the K N filter because the filter material messed up the mass airflow sensor .went with a purolator flows just as good. 96 firebird formula ws6 6 speed hardtop red like yours.
That K&N didn’t work due to it not being seated against your hood. It needs a box to shield it from under hood heat as well as to seal against the rectangle under your hood so it actually pull air from the ducts
Matthew Perry I'm really surprised they sell it like that. All it really needs is a heat shield, something like the volant intake. Seems like pretty poor engineering from an otherwise reputable company.
The intake you were using lacks insulation. You're drawing air from outside, but it's offset by the heat the engine is putting out. I use the Volant with additional insulation so that it seals to the hood. It draws in more air and decreases the intake temp. Make sure to get a proper tune to gain the most benefit.
Thank you so much for the video. I love the idea of the better LS RA set up on the 93-97! And I have a few questions. Did you check the IAT for increased improvement/decreased temp while driving? (I apologize as I haven't gotten through all your channels videos) Do you have a factory RA hood? Do you know of anyone using a fiberglass hood like the TruFiber (Harwood, etc.) and installing the LS RA set up? I am about to buy a beautiful 96 TA (non-RA), and will be putting the TruFiber hood on it, as the factory hoods are STUPID expensive...too expensive for my budget. I want to put a RA set up this fall/winter. Thanks!
Yes it definitely cools as you drive. This was a couple years ago now. I can't remember to what degree. I'm not sure if the hood was factory or not. I would recommend a NON RA LS box. The RA LS box is just a hair taller and barely fits after much trimming on hood and box. The regular LS box is nearly identical but a tad shorter, should be a better fit.
Yes, I realized how long ago after I sent the message. So thank you for the feedback. The issue with the fit is something my brother and I were discussing a little earlier after he had watched your video, as I was excited at the thought of doing a factory RA box on the car. Curious if you were able to put a non-RA box on your car to compare? And I'm guessing you don't have that car anymore??
I’m using the same MAF set up on mine. Would you mind sharing the tune for the MAF to get me started with the tuning process. Right now I have the stock MAF on.
Well my 93 didnt have a "stock" maf. I had to grab one from somewhere. I thought the 4" one would be better for air flow. In the end I used none and kept it speed density like it was from the factory.
Yeah it should. The ram air box is just a little taller than a non ram air box and it barely fits after trimming. I think the regular LS1 box with any lid would fit better.
@@TorqueYork just use any stock v8 box. I think the ram air box fits worse. The openings are almost the same size anyways. I'm sure you could make the volant fit but it would probably take some cutting
I bought a 2000 Camaro that has that K&N setup on it. The first thing I thought was "what a heat soaking P.O.S." your video confirms my suspicions lol. I seriously can't believe K&N would sell such a poorly engineered system. And they want over $500 for it!!! I can't decide if I want to attempt to modify the K&N system to make it better or go back to stock and modify it.
@@HorsepowerTube Red. Not my first choice for a catfish Camaro but I still like it a lot. I think the Catfish look best in black or the dark blue in SS trim of course. But red is third on my list so I definitely can't complain. It will never be as cool as your WS6 Trans Am though. I'll never forgive myself for selling my 98 Trans Am.
Andrew Hunt if it's factory LT1 I think it has a seal to keep it out. I got this LS1 setup for $100. Factory LT1 setup seems like everyone wants a ton of $ for.
you're focusing on air intake temperature only, don't you realize the K&N filter flows way more CFM airflow into the engine ? sure you might get some colder air, but you're getting LESS air with the factory setup.
I'm getting more air, as all the air that enters is rammed into the intake not to mention the stock airbox has a larger hole. With the K&N there really is no ram air as all the air can blow right past it into the engine bay. Don't think more CFM either bc both setups use a K&N filter. Just the factory housing works alot better.

i just picked up another lt1 love the vids
Good idea, sometimes OEM is better then after market.
At 2:48 I half " cut " stuff when I'm in a hurry too.. Lol.. Awesome Channel BTW
FYI I just did the same install but used a SLP Lid and I did not have to cut my hood to get it to fit. I guess the factory lid is a little larger.
When funds free up and it's safe to go outside without a mask .I plan to swap out the
optispark with a Torquehead

slick setup
Love the paper test
At wide open throttle you can hear the "roar"from the air entering the hood.
Did the temps drop even more when you went driving?
Good job
